Uproar follows imams' detention The removal of six Muslim clerics from a US Airways flight from the Twin Cities set off a nationwide uproar, and the Department of Homeland Security's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties said it will review the incident. Bob Von Sternberg and Pamela Miller, Star Tribune From now on, Omar Shahin won't be praying at the airport while waiting for a flight. "This was humiliating, the worst moment of my life," Shahin said Tuesday, a day after he and five fellow Muslim imams were escorted off a US Airways jet at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. "To practice your faith and pray is a crime in America?" he said. The incident set off a nationwide uproar, and the Department of Homeland Security's Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties said it will review the incident. Bloggers and talk radio buzzed about the need to be vigilant against potential terrorists, while civil rights advocates and Muslim leaders cried foul. The national Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called for a congressional hearing about ethnic and religious profiling at airports. Locally, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas and the Somali Justice Advocacy Center questioned the detention. Bushra Khan, spokeswoman for CAIR's Arizona chapter, said, "All these men did was pray, and it was misunderstood. The bottom line is that they were Middle Eastern-looking men ... and that scares some people." US Airways said that it will fully investigate the matter and that passenger safety is paramount. The religious leaders were heading home after a three-day North American Imams Federation conference in Bloomington. The pilot ordered the men off the flight after their praying, conversation and behavior alarmed several passengers and flight attendants. The imams denied that they did or said anything that could be considered threatening. They were released without charges after being questioned for five hours by federal law enforcement officials. Left behind by US Airways Shahin, president of the imams' group, called for a boycott of US Airways after an agent and his supervisor, without giving a reason, refused to sell him replacement tickets Tuesday morning. "I'm not going to stay silent," Shahin said. "I came to this country to enjoy justice and freedom." The US Airways supervisor told Shahin that his tickets had been refunded and that he would have to go to another airline. The supervisor offered Shahin a customer service phone number. "I want to go home. I don't want phone numbers," Shahin said. "They have no reason to refuse service to us just because of the way we look." He bought six one-way tickets at the Northwest Airlines counter, and the men flew to Phoenix without incident. 'Praying very loud' In a statement to police, a US Airways gate agent wrote that three of the men prayed in Arabic at the gate. "I was suspicious by the way they were praying very loud," the gate agent said. Said Shahin: "We were never bothering anyone, not saying anything loudly. We were just prostrating ourselves, the normal way we pray." Devout Muslims pray five times a day, but practices vary among cultural groups, said Owais Bayunus, a Muslim scholar in the Twin Cities. "Those who pray in the airport would be more conservative Muslims who stop to pray at the designated times no matter where they are," he said. "Others accept the fatwa [an opinion by an Islamic legal scholar] that it is acceptable to combine the prayers during travel." Before passengers boarded, one became alarmed by an overheard discussion. "They seemed angry," he wrote in a police statement. "Mentioned 'U.S.' and 'killing Saddam.' Two men then swore slightly under their breath/mumbled. They spoke Arabic again. The gate called boarding for the flight. The men then chanted 'Allah, Allah, Allah.' " Marwan Sadeddin, another of the imams, said, "What bothers me the most is these false statements and lies that we were shouting, 'Allah, Allah.' This never happened." Another, Ahmad Shqeirat, said, "That is a lie. We were not talking politics. And even if we did, so what? What is suspicious about that?" Once the six were seated, two in front, two in the middle and two in back, and paid visits to each other to chat, some passengers became alarmed, the police report said. One passed a note to a flight attendant citing the alleged comments about Allah and Saddam. Flight attendants alerted the pilot, who called airport police and asked them to remove the men from the plane. They left "cooperatively," according to the police report. A bomb-sniffing dog examined the men, their luggage and the entire airplane and found nothing. The plane left for Phoenix about three hours late after the other 141 passengers reboarded. After being questioned by agents of the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI, the Secret Service and the Transportation Security Administration, the men were released. Asad Zaman, communications director for the Muslim American Society (MAS) of Minnesota, said an Arizona MAS chapter member called him for help about 11 p.m. Monday because the six imams had not arrived and one had called his wife to say police had detained them. Within 10 minutes of a Minnesota imam's call to police, the six were free, Zaman said. "This event would be the equivalent of Roman Catholic bishops being arrested in China because they wore clerical robes and invoked Jesus Christ in prayers," Zaman said. vonste@startribune.com • 612-673-7184 pmiller@startribune.com • 612-673-4290 Source 6 men removed from flight, questioned Six passengers were removed from a Phoenix-bound US Airways flight Monday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and questioned by police, airline and airport officials said. Associated Press Last update: November 21, 2006 – 7:05 AM Six passengers were removed from a Phoenix-bound US Airways flight Monday at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and questioned by police, airline and airport officials said. Authorities said the crew reported that the passengers were acting suspiciously. One of the men said they were Muslim imams who were questioned for several hours before being released. Omar Shahin of Phoenix said they were returning from a conference in Minneapolis of the North American Imams Federation. Shahin said he is president of the group. Shahin said three of the men stood and said their normal evening prayers together on the plane. He attributed any concerns by passengers or crew to ignorance about Islam. US Airways spokeswoman Andrea Rader said the men had just boarded Flight 300 about 6:30 p.m. when someone passed a note about the men's behavior to a flight attendant, who then conferred with other crew members. The men were asked to leave the plane, but they refused, so crew members called for airport police and the men were removed, Rader said. Airport spokesman Pat Hogan said the men were questioned by airport police and Transportation Security Administration officials. Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said the meeting drew about 150 imams from around the country. Hooper also said that U.S. Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, D-Minneapolis, who just became the first Muslim elected to Congress, also was at the meeting. TOM FORD AND ASSOCIATED PRESS Startribune Very humilating experience for the Imams. I heard somewhere that only 10% or so of the population actually know what Islam is really about. I also heard somewhere that a large percentage could not tell if Muslims worship monkeys or the moon.

UN: Hizbullah hired Somalian mercenaries for war on Israel Friday, November 17, 2006 WASHINGTON — Hizbullah recruited nearly 1,000 Al Qaida-aligned Sunnis to fight Israel in the war in Lebanon in mid-2006. A United Nations report said at least 720 Sunnis from Somalia were recruited by Hizbullah to fight Israel in the 34-day war that ended on Aug. 14. The report said Hizbullah brought the insurgents to Lebanon in July 2006 at the start of the war, Middle East Newsline reported. "In exchange for the contribution of the Somali military force, Hizbullah arranged for additional support to be given by the governments of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Syrian Arab Republic, which was subsequently provided," the report said. The 86-page report provided details of Hizbullah's relationship with Al Qaida-aligned Sunni insurgency groups in the war against Israel. The report said the Somalis were paid at least $2,000 each to fight in Lebanon. The families of Somalis killed in the war were given as much as $30,000 each. The report said financing came from Hizbullah's patron, Iran, as well as other Middle East states. Israel has never reported the use of non-Lebanese Sunnis to fight Israel. The military reported the deployment of hundreds of soldiers from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the war. On July 27, the UN said, Hizbullah sent 200 Somali fighters from Lebanon to Syria. The report said the Hizbullah fighters received training in Syria. The report, scheduled to be discussed on Nov. 17 by the Security Council, asserted that Egypt and Syria have also aided Somali fighters. The UN has sought to maintain an arms embargo on Mogadishu since 1992. Hizbullah provided training to the Somalis, the UN said. The report, authored by four experts, also said Iran tried to obtain uranium from Somalia in exchange for weapons. "At the time of the writing of this report, there were two Iranians in Dusa Mareb engaged on matters linked to the exploration of uranium in exchange for arms," the report, dated Oct. 16, said. The UN said the leader of the Al Qaida-aligned Council of Islamic Courts, Aden Hashi Farah, selected about 720 experienced fighters in mid-July 2006. The report said the Somalis traveled to Lebanon where they fought alongside Hizbullah. In September, Farah ordered at least 100 Somalis to return from Lebanon, accompanied by five Hizbullah operatives. The rest of the Somali contingent stayed in Lebanon and received advanced training. The report said Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Syria were also supplying Al Qaida-aligned forces in Somalia. The UN report said the Somalis have received anti-aircraft missiles, grenade launchers and other advanced weapons. Source Aduunyada maalinba waxbaad baran baa la yiri. Ma aanan ogeyn Sunni Somalis would fight alongside Hezbullah Shiite iyo inay Somalia leedahay uranium. I guess Ambassador Joe Wilson has gotten another assignment. UN experts danbaa la isku haleyn. Is this just another “weapons of mass destruction in Iraq” episode?

I saw this clip on YouTube presumably by Bartamaha and it depicts a female serial killer on the loose targeting Somali men. The clip shows of someone slicing up and cooking what supposed to be the meat of the missing Somali man. I find it very graphic and extremely distasteful. I don’t know if this is a joke or intended for the public. The title suggests it’s only for Olol crew. Is it possible they’re staging on You Tube as a customer focus group for upcoming script/film/program? Proceed with caution. Viewer discretion is advised. Not suitable for Maryooley.

What dark nick are you talking about? What is so dark about Baydhabo-Janaay?

Serenity, all people want is their share of the pie. Is that too much to ask? I don't think that's a bunch of whatever you wrote.

Maxaa kaaga shan & toban ah His retirement spot is a private matter. It’s neither your preference not that of his constituency. It’s HIS preference and only his choice to retire wherever he wishes. Your argument is out of line unless Riyaale signed a contract under oath to retire where YOU want him to retire. If there's a breached contract, you can sue him at your local clan degmo courthouse.

I'll plan to see it IA when it shows in my area.

Can we not then imply you are speaking from qabiil point of view and maybe subconsciously, if not already aware of it, think this maybe cuts into your "clannish" history? Like Abwaan said, you and others need to stop the Fadhi-ku-dirir siyaasad ku salaysan qabiil and support your brothers who are making a point! Quursigu qiil ma leeyahay? You decide! I like the clarity in your tone.

lol@wajib. You mean their life survival was wajib? Islam is different than Somali or Saudi culture. Here's a tackling the issue of culture and Islam. Hope you'll like it.

lol@nacnaciina. Thanks for the trailer Horn. I like the story and I think it's one of those areas that our culture needs some reform. I've seen few Somali films but I think I liked one or two and I don't think I'm alone. I don’t have a high expectation but no one wishes to spend time and money on something like Qabyo and turns out you are watching an eight grader gradation party for an hour or so than a real film. I would love to see some real Somali comedy, the likes of Odey Cabdulle, Aw-koombe, Aw-kuuku, & Maji Xaji Banadir, not obnoxious wannabeas. You’d be better off renting Somali old riwaayado. Forgive me brother, I was not familiar with Xiin Faniin Media Group.

^^ Common sense expects people to practice what they preach! Do dead people fly? No you don’t have to be dead to donate an organ. You’ll be put to sleep in a comfortable bed for few hours and will wake up and glad to hear your organ is on its way to the right destination. Do you look dead? I could not answer. Anything is possible in this world. SOL member has recently confessed of seeing weird dark forces around these blocks. I don’t want to step on a wrong stone and end up in a ditch.

Eff all the hypocrites who would take anything and everything to get better but get all choosy about giving! Fidel Castro is in need of a new brain or kidney to stay in power for another forty-seven years or so. I hope you’ll keep your word and fly to Havana to help out a fellow human.

Women are the ones who have been making progress in the country with their contributions to the economy, yet they never even get to be in the political progress. Even in America, Somalis are very 'wadaadized', although most are cultural muslims, there is this silent tone that says you can't leave the norm. I don't have a problem with wadaads, but I have a problem when people hinder the rights of others in the name of "wadaadism." Maandheey, unless Saxiifa & Somalia got mixed up somewhere in your head, Somalia is a country without government, law or order. If my memory is dependable, no where in Somalia a women was denied the right to own a car or drive or forced to dress a certain way. Under the rule of Max'ed Dheere, Jowhar was the city where women were denied to dress the way they wanted and forced to dress according to the administrations satisfactory. I don’t understand what you mean by “cultural muslims”? It sounds so insulting to write Somalis are culturally Muslims. It somehow implies Somalis are not really Muslims but only in culture, not in principal or believe. I don't know if you were speaking on behalf of your origin, Puntland, but I think Somalis of all regions are Muslims in culture and believe. I don’t want to judge your hantaatac but come back and tell us what you meant.
