Some of us do read. Drama-Sheikh Khayr is too fussed to bother comprehending. Otherwise I'd hate to think his 1st language is failing him. Amelia, extortionists they certainly are  . What avenues of appeal I wonder exist for parents to fight the sentences or the fines. None I am sure.
  2. Castro, That is exactly what I was curious about. How is this gathering defined differently from others? I usually have no problems with civil or sharia laws being adhered to if all members of a society are sufficiently warned of their existence and punishment if violated. My guess is that there is no 'penal code' or else the reporter would have referred to it as the reason for arrest and imprisonment. The shaming alone of these young people and their families and for what? Originally posted by Castro: Naden, the last sentence of the report says many parents of the kids want to know under what laws the kids were sentenced. Probably something to do with decency laws. And the maximum sentence I read was 6 months not 8 years. Interestingly, if the party was under the guise of "sagootin", i.e. sending someone travelling overseas off, it would probably be ok. At least that's what the reporter was implying, I believe. I'd love to see the Penal Code book used by the "Boorama Police Force".
  3. Just read it, seems like something of a raid was set up. Still not sure what the crime is but it is damn scary. Originally posted by Castro: ^ Apparently the story has some elements of truth to it. Read it here , though xiniinyood decided to liberally report the details and neglected to provide the source to us.
  4. Is it only sweeping if you don't agree with it? Where does it say in the original post that a religious sentence was handed down? If it is indeed one, is it applied elsewhere and to other groupings?. Hence, my call for a precedent. Does anyone read anymore. For all we know, it could be a civil sentence, similar to a fine/jail time you might get for an indecent public act like flashing small children and old ladies. I don't have to prove anything to anyone, just curious if this story is true, under what legislative power it falls. naden Could you please state your reasons for Islam having nothing with 'this'? You haven't answered the question, you just made more demands. The burden of proof is on you since you made a sweeping statement. [/QB]

  6. Could you please state your reasons for Islam having nothing with 'this'? Castro Oh, I think I missed this statement. By 'this', I am referring to the jail time if it is true. I'd like to know what islamic decree or fatwa resulted in the sentencing. Did it apply to other gatherings of men and women? Any other similar islamic/sharia sentencing for social behaviour? Precedent is what I am looking for and not whether partying is islamic or not. That vortex of what is haram or not is not what I am interested in as it could apply to everything from DVDs to art and so on.

  8. Originally posted by Castro: ^ Seriously though, what is a party if people are not rubbing elbows and dancing to some booty-shakin', foreign music? If the concept of a party is frowned upon in Islam, then it matters not what the reason for celebration is. I don't know. My opinions on this particular issue are changing as I get older. But an opinion is not really what this is about. Somali music causes the most booty shakin' (and wigglin', and jumpin' up and around ) but that's beside the point. A gathering not approved is a party while one approved is a majlis, an aroos, a going-away-or-coming-back-or-just-plain-bored get together. Islam, I think, has nothing to do with this.
  9. Growing a dirty, dyed-with-henna beard and growing old don't make you an elder, certainly not a sheikh as most claim. Wisdom, learning and vision make you one. This voyeuristic obsession with other people's lives is sickening. If this story about the young people being thrown in jail is true, then it is a sad state. Let's not get carried away with the doomsday nonsense. They may have wanted to socialize just like any of us enjoying the freedom of the countries we ran to. If people want to have sex, they don't need to throw a party to do it.
  10. Islan...Islan...ISLAN..who you callin' an islan  ? Oh heeeellllll, no! (takes off wig and earrings). You have the most colourful collection of pathologies I have seen on an anonymous forum in a while. Surely you can string a couple of sentences together without resorting to schoolyard name calling. People can disagree with you without being retarded (a most unfortunate use of this word) or lazy or infidel. And what is this talk about me begging or you giving me charity? Are you my student loan officer? Dang...a girl can't hide nowhere. Now get a hold of yourself and quit acting crazy. Originally posted by Sayyid ()Qutb: quote:Who are 'we'? P.S. Waxa la iga kaa siiyeey baan garan la'yahaye? lost? No need for silly comments, this is not for the 'handicapped' folks with a bag of 'loose' money attached to their 'wheelchair', which they've 'begged' from righteous people and you ain't getting 'charity' from me certainly! if 'we'ever need a 'retarded' one like you, ill kindly let you know but 'before' that you're not needed and are certainly misplaced. Go somewhere else if you have the 'urge' (need) to 'beg'. p.s. learn 'how' to quote you inadequate extremly stuupid person! This 'stuppid' little 'pathetic' and 'ignorant' people need to be 'whipped' because 'they' can't stop asking silly questions. The prophets had to the deal with such kind of sillyness and actually people can do themselves considerable 'harm' if they ask too many silly questions. 'Who is 'we'? kulaha inadequate, stupiid, ignorant little 'naive thing'. 'We' is we! Is that enough for a answer you 'bloody' ignorant member of the handicapped and 'retarded' group of shameless beggers!!
  11. Who are 'we'? P.S. I'm sure you meant 'lose' as in be dispossessed of while 'loose' means not too rigid/fastened...a wee bit of enlightenment . No, We have our own lifestyle, traditions, culture and way of life and 'if' we were to try and compete with the 'europeans' in their culture, traditions and lifestyle we would simply 'loose' out because we cannot compete with them on what they have mastered and worked for so long! 12. Arabs consider themselves Caucasian. Nineteenth century scientists/anthropologists engaged in a racist frenzy to make a chart of people, going from the superior (whites) to the inferior (blacks). They were all too happy to put Arabs and other mediterranean folks in the Caucasian category. Once read an opinion shared by a North African (Algerian or Egyptian) on the BBC site that he never referred to himself as an African because it had 'negative connotations'.

Bashir Goth is a daciya of sorts, I think, and is very much hard on fellow muslims. Some accuse him of being too forgiving of the Western world and not having enough pride in a muslim 'identity'. I think that such an identity can be foolhardy, much like nationalism because muslims are not a monolithic group and they often have divergent interests and views on the world.
  14. Bashir Goth's article while emotional, does not apologize for Islam and muslims. Muslim 'moderates' have a muted voice nowadays (I place quotes around the word to refer to the non-Imams/Mullahs who are versed in Islamic history and doctrine and are able to negotiate present problems - no need to scream that there should only be one type of muslim). I do not agree with a few of the man's views such as the true intentions of the western world in extending helping hands to muslims during the Tsunami and other events. I do find a poignant argument in the present state of poverty and illiteracy among large numbers of muslims which makes them easy to incite on some issues and largely ignorant of more malignant problems within their borders.
