One example is the Charter which states that the parliamentary members will be chosen: "by recognised political leaders comprising the Transitional National Government, the National Salvation Council, regional administrations, the Somali Reconciliation and Restoration Council (SRRC), the G8 and the civil society organisations, and to be endorsed by genuine traditional leaders". "Regional administrations",--as if Puntland is comparable to Hiiraan regional government. Or the implication that any of these other groups(Arta/TNG, G8 etc) are more important/vital to the restoration of peace and a unified all-inclusive government to Somalia than Puntland. Which is completely absurd. Puntland is the single largest, unified, and peaceful region in Somalia. And no government created in Nairobi will succeed without the support and inclusion of the people and leaders(both political and tradition) of Puntland. This can be seen in the numerous failed 'governments' by southern warlords/leader since 1991,--from the Aidiid Sr. and Ali Mahdi administrations to the AbdiQasim Arta/TNG government. And the theory by some(such as Djibouti) that this failed 'leader' AbdiQasim,--whom I supported in 2000--will be tasked again to be President of Somalia is a wholly ridiculous concept. AbdiQasim has show since 2000 that he is: a)A staunch tribalist(for his support of his kinsmen in the JVA in Kismayo and elsewhere). b)Unable to bring peace to a single neighborhood in Xamar. The civil war actually intensified! c)A thief who stole hundreds of millions of dollars donated to Somalia by Arab governments(among others). Not to mention his position in the inner government of Siyad Barre for 2 decades. But if we are all here Arta: Part 2,--then this whole exercise will prove to be irrelevent and a failure. BN

The town of Berbera saw some of the worst atrocities of the war, even though the SNM never entered Berbera in 1988. Elders and businessmen were immediately arrested en masse after the SNM attack on Hargeisa and Burao; between 27 May and 1 June, they were transferred to Mogadishu. The killings, which were exceptionally brutal in Berbera, began shortly afterwards. Many of the victims had their throats slit and were then shot. A series of massacres which have been mentioned again and again took place, mainly in June, in Buraosheikh, close to Berbera, when about 500 men were killed in groups of between 30-40. Some of the victims were from Burao, Hargeisa and surrounding villages who had come as temporary labourers to the port of Berbera. Others were asylum seekers who had been returned from Saudia Arabia. The names of some of these men are listed in the book. As head of the NSS in Berbera, Dahir Rayaale bears a heavy and direct responsibility for their fate. Demonstrating against the seperation of Somalia has nothing to do with supporting the peace and development of any region in Somalia. But you can believe whatever you choose. Sooyaal, I dont think Guraad is talking about PL seperating from Somalia. Maybe you are misunderstanding one another. The NSS was the enemy of Somalis and Somalia. It served one purpose and one man. Horn, This post is about a demonstration in the UK for the unity of Somalia,--something I thought you were in support of. But you are sounding very desperate and anti-PuntLand lately. You seem to be taking every chance to attack PLers. Saying ABU-AMMAR is not "peace-loving" is below the belt(and you know it). It's like accusing you of perpetuating the clan conflict in Galgaduud because your send money to your relatives. Obviosly neither statement is true. And dont worry yourself with JCJ or C/Yusuf. The people of Puntland know these men better then anyone. And they, and they alone, will decide their future. The important thing is that there is peace in PL,--a great accomplishment in a place like Somalia. Please be happy for them and hopefully the rest of Somalia can learn from PL/SL. BN
