What damages the image of our good deen is intolerant culture of some Muslims. The act of this guy is not isolated to him alone, this is a culture(honor killing) that is tolerated some part of the Muslim world. Very common in part of Arabia to South Asia and has nothing to do with Islam. But when it gets out and hits outside world, in this case America, media will scrutinized the story and unfortunately it's the religion that is blamed rather than the twisted culture.
