Canadian oil chief in Somali region for exploration 3 days ago NAIROBI (AFP) — A delegation from Canada's Africa Oil Corporation is visiting the Somali semi-autonomous region of Puntland to brief leaders on its planned oil exploration activities for next year, a statement from the region said Friday. AOC chief Rick Schmitt President and two drilling experts arrived in the region on Thursday and held talks with Puntland President Adde Muse and government officials. The team also visited the prospective basins in the Nogal and Dharoor Valleys in northern Somalia where the company is expected to drill four exploratory wells early next year, the statement said. Puntland rulers and AOC, formerly known as Canmex Minerals Corporation, in January signed a Production Sharing Agreement despite opposition from local Somali clans. The firm will spend 50 million dollars (34 million euros) in exploration expenditures. Several other companies including China's CNOOC and China International Oil and Gas (CIOG) are reported to have signed agreements with Puntland, which was controlled by Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed before he became Somali president in 2004. The Horn of Africa nation, which has had no functioning central government since 1991, has attracted several foreign energy companies that are interested in prospecting for oil. Before the country plunged into anarchy in 1991, when dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted, geological exploration indicated that Somalia could have oil reserves given its proximity to the oil-rich Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. A Delegation from Africa Oil Corporation Visits Puntland Bossaso, Puntland: Mr. Rick Schmitt President and CEO Africa Oil Corporation (formerly of CanMex Minerals Corporation) and his staff arrived at the Bossaso Airport. Accompanying Mr. Schmitt were Mr. Paul Coyer Drilling Manager and Mr. John West Geophysicist. The Puntland Government signed a contract (Production Sharing Agreement) with the CanMex Minerals Corporation (now Africa Oil Corporation) in January 2007. The purpose of the visit was to brief the President and Government on the drilling program and the target areas that the company is planning to drill. During their stay in Bossaso, the delegation visited the Bossaso Port; they also assessed area roads and infrastructure. The delegation after a day of visiting sites in Bossaso proceeded by land to the Capital of the State Garowe. Along the route to Garowe, an evaluation of the main road and all bridges was also conducted. This assessment was performed in order to determine the possible route of the drill rig to the drill area targets. In Garowe Mr. Schmitt and Mr. Ken Watson General Manager (Africa Oil Corp) met with the President H.E. Mohamud Musse Hersi at Garowe Presidential offices. While Mr. Coyer and Mr. West continued with their assessment of roads, access to the drill site and they also visited previous drill sites in the Nugaal Region. Somalia: Locals Resist Somaliland Troops, Radio Reporter Jailed Garowe Online (Garowe) 26 November 2007 Posted to the web 27 November 2007 Garowe LAS Locals in northern Somalia's Sool region took up arms against soldiers from the separatist government of Somaliland after the soldiers entered the town of Lasadar, reliable sources reported Monday. One local civilian was wounded in the firefight between armed villagers and the Somaliland security forces. A Somaliland military source from Sool region confirmed to Garowe Online that the Somaliland unit returned from Lasadar town after facing armed resistance from locals. He declined to mention any casualties suffered by the Somaliland forces. Somaliland troops and allied clan militias captured the provincial capital of Sool, Las Anod, in October after rival troops from the neighboring semiautonomous region of Puntland withdrew. The self-declared republic of Somaliland has since been trying to expand its control over Sool, with neighboring Puntland threatening a counterattack to regain control of Las Anod. In a signed declaration, a congregation of influential clan elders from Sool region called on Somaliland to withdraw its security forces from Las Anod or take "full responsibility" of anything that happens as a direct result of Somaliland's armed presence.
