Sometimes, we like to live in the past. Regretting a past mistake. We will play it over and over in our mind, what we should have done, could have done or would have done. But it’s no use thinking the past can be the present as everything isn’t the same as the past. For example no two dates or loves can be the same. No individuals would have the same characteristic as that of the past. Everything new that happens obviously may bare a slight resemblance to the past but would not necessarily be the same. So when you say you live in the past when asked about it isn’t necessarily living in the past but rather thoughts of the past which don’t last long. One thing for sure is that the past can hold you back or be used as a milestone of what you want or not want the future to be. Good memories will obviously be held with you sometimes with such passion that you keep rewinding and comparing everything with it. Bad pasts can haunt the future and may wreck your life for good as you keep thinking of what is to happen to you would more less be the same hence always judging the future to be the past. This obviously will only hinder you and weigh you down. Don't hold on to the past, you can't change it and always look to live for today and tomorrow and not in the past. You are still not what you should be and should focus all your energies on living for the future. Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.

Culture and religion shouldn’t be put on the same mantle as some of you have already done. We identify with both but they are not the same. As Somalis we tend to throw what we term as our culture and embrace what we think is right depending on each individual. We Somalis do have a culture that is generally Islamic in nature but at the same time isn’t as the two differ in customs and values. A case in one is what we call qabil. All over the world you would find a lot of Somali folks totally behind qabil which they practice with such penuche. It’s perfected and it’s used for all sorts of things... i.e. marriage, relationships and a form of identity and history. This too is similar in away with Islam which advocates for cultural diversity though there is a difference in approach. Some of the practices of Somalis in this aspect are in themselves unislamic. The younger generations are usually enticed by the different cultures and environments they live in. In fact many have no idea what the customs and cultures of Somalis are and would say what is that if asked. “ “O mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware.†(Glorious Qur’an 49: 13). This verse from the Qur’an deals with issues of major importance. One of these is, of course, that God created us ‘different’, a point which is further stressed in the chapter of al-Rum (the Romans) in the Glorious Qur’an: “And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of your languages and colours. Lo! Herein indeed are portents for men of knowledge.†(22) The other side of God’s wisdom to create us is difference, which is revealed in his call to mankind to ‘know one another’. ‘Dialogue’ is the gateway to knowing one another. That is why Islam encourages dialogue in the best way and lays down the basis for this kind of dialogue considering it as part of Islamic faith. The call to the people of the world ‘to know one another’ is also of most importance because it is nothing less than an invitation to dialogue on the collective level (a concept that is so badly missing in today’s world where individualism seems to overwhelm human relations). Dialogue (which could also be termed ‘communication’) is given high esteem in Islam; it is actually tantamount to a wisdom which--if understood and applied properly--could well serve as a stepping stone for the promotion of a ‘new world order’, which all men of good will are dreaming of today. As Somalis the above can be debated is communicating is one of the most difficult things that are apparent in out community and wisdom rarely comes into play.

If it is discriminative as you suggest then perhaps you can suggest what we can do to correct it. As you may or may not know, the Somali history is somehow distorted and not very accurate and all we are doing is to try and find whats wrong with it. So rather than blame, you should correct any wrongs. Im sure what you said makes sense too.

Its been known along time that Ethiopians would abuse Somalis more than even their own. Its always good to do alittle research before advocating for an Ethiopian Occupation that wont go away without a fight just like Eritrea. If they can abuse and rape their own nationalities under the guise of keeping the peace. Think of what they might do once a few somalis kill some Ethiopian troopers!

Isn’t this one of those articles where Somali males are trampled on? Common now why would anyone bring out his or her laundry on here rather than dealing with it internally. It should be a family matter and should be dealt with in a manner that’s appropriate rather than just post something online and say someone is stalking me. How the hell do we know this a fabricated story in the first place? I could easily write one that says a certain heeblayo is beating on me or stalking me too. So lets not go way too far here and look at this with a little bit of chilli in it.

A well researched article plus he forgot to mention that all these neighbouring countries have a lot to lose with a united Somalia. Kenya would have to reckon with trying to keep its Somali population under the constant eye of its soldiers while Ethiopia does the same. It goes without saying that Somalis downfall lies at the heart of what’s happening now which is the hard fought undemocratic mobilisation of neighbouring troops by the men elected without even thinking of the consequences which have in a nutshell been mentioned in the above article. I believe what happened in Nairobi can only be good. Especially when you think of people in developed countries like Italy, Japan and Russia can exchange blows too. So we are not as bad as a lot of people here think. Besides rather than killing each other in the streets why not practice a bit of kungfu with chairs instead. Personally I think this is a good sign and that no one would take parliamentarians for granted as they used to be. Somalis have come along way and now the only thing left is to introduce the YOGA so they can calm down a little.

Will Duco in an ideal situation, I would 99% agree with you but brother when a wrong is done it has to be talked about or corrected and that’s the only way forward. Something like the South African peace reconciliation to calm the people down and to heal. The majority of Somali politicians today are mostly former Siad Barre ministers who looted and destroyed the country and therefore lack legitimacy or new warlords who have no respect for country and human rights. What we need are young, educated, untainted and visionary politicians. Apparently there is no single high profile politician in Somalia who can meet the needs and aspirations of Somalis as a whole. The young need to get rid of these dinosaurs so we can have a major political change within the Somali state. This in turn should guarantee a new Somalia on par with the world states. Looking at what has happened over in Nairobi, we shouldn’t expect a lot to come out of it especially with qabiil loyalists and believers who bought power for their clans rather the national interest and peaceful reconciliation of this fragmented country. We should also look at foreign forces not only as a threat to our national sovereignty but a threat to the national healthy of the population who could possibly be hit by AIDS and other strange diseases. We Somalis should view ALL warlords, as men who have collective responsibility for Somalia’s destruction, and the cold-blooded murder of thousands of her citizens. Unlike the past where there were no archives for the heinous crimes committed in Somali, today we should make sure we use technology to Document the information on all crimes against humanity committed in the Somali territory while the memory of such crimes is still fresh in the minds of the victims and witnesses. This in turn would be used against them at some stage or other and be brought to justice. We should preserve and safe guard such information until such a time as either the international community or the Somali State (if at all) is in a position to persecute such criminals. These actions are moral (and legal?) obligation on all humanity and will save lives and make our country safer knowing that anyone could be brought to justice. Many warlords themselves have the blessings of many of their people however; all we can do is basically educate those blind followers who don’t even get the desired support for their constant blind support. Consequently, abuse of narcotic drugs by children and youths in Mogadishu City is rapidly increasing, and it has strongly fuelled the brutal civil war in the city. It is a business that is fiercely sustained by Mogadishu institutions and warlords. Propagandizing, hate speech, fears and family memories of trauma, warlords offering up psychic relief through the language of toxic and exclusionary clannish – these speech acts are carried out within discourses of imagined communities with unimaginable consequences. Warlords deployed discourse naturalizing clan identity, war, and the nation-state, and the violent struggle among clan groups for control of first their immediate occupied territories then the state. But if some intellectuals resisted or reflected on these events, others invented them with such panache as seen lately the different forums. Clans enmeshed in victimization narratives, victimization narratives passed from one generation to the next, real and recent history experiences of trauma and injury, the manipulation of emotional vulnerabilities under conditions of economic and political crisis, the provocation of personalities more inclined toward intolerant and stereotypical views of otherness, myths of clan statehood, the mobilization of criminal and even psychopathic elements, young irregular sons drugged and used as pones, militias, outsiders committing phantom acts of violence to simulate ‘clanic conflict,’ warlords and community leaders planning psychological strategies. We should get together and fight these folks and we should never ever give them the qualified support that they somehow got used to. They are criminals and should always be treated with contempt. There may be peace without social justice, but it will be short-lived. Clan violence today does not require the mobilization of every individual “in†a state or clan group, nor even a majority. Now why cant we just get rid of all these dinosaurs and try to insert new blood in the political sphere where we are hell bent on fighting over the same war criminals that have murdered, plundered and totally looted the beautiful country that was once Jewel of Africa. If men didnt exist, would make ups exist? Would women really care how they looked if it wasnt for mens appreciation? Who would care about what someone thought of them in certain ways? Do you think we would have plastic surgery if it wasnt for beauty enhancement and love to fit in into certain criterias of life and loves? I care about presentation of anything even my food. And certainly beauty tho be it gross could be what someone sees and therefore if we conclude that beauty can be anything to anyone would we be so wrong? After all what one sees in someone wouldnt possibly be what another sees.

Languages tend to play tricks on many here. The word can mean what one intends them to mean depending on what they want to portray and how they want to interpret. We are Somalis and we should be allowed to say what we think is right to signify what we think is aright term. After all everyday new words are created by human beings and it wouldnt be prudent for us to just be followers of creators. We should be allowed to coin our own words and meanings regardless of what is written in papers and dictionaries.
