  2. Bashi - You got that right bro.....I wanna invite you to ma joint so we can do some macawis fashion by offering all the customers free coffee and ofcouse macawiis in the name of Somali Art and fashion. KATEEG KUJIRTAY About time we encouraged whats good and unknown about us and noto to forget the qaulity in service too.
  3. Interesting perspective some are for somali dress and others absolutely cant stand it and ofcouse some call it ancient or shall I say pre-history. Aeryn I believe history repeats itself and as they say what goes around often comes around. Ever heard of Old is gold? Well its true some of the classic old things tend to be precisely for they are rare and make a mark always. Case in one where Bashi goes to his his daily joing for coffee with his macawiis which makes him so different that he has the attention of every and they are fascinated by the fact that he walks with his stick on his shoulders kinda reminiscing his herding days. Besides taking the time to cordinate what you are going to wear is sometimes way too stressful and can easily get to one. Thats why ladies tend to talk aweek to shop for that dress and a whole evening just to come out for dinner or the occasion of the day. Macawiis to me means comfort n smoothness. Its akind of dress that allows one to breath which makes it far better when you compare it to the tight jeans. Ahh I see that we got some squibles going on here ...calm down folks its just amatter of opinion.
  4. Lol@Bash Bro I cant fault you there you doing what we should be all doing and that is lead rather than assimilate. In these kudos to you for highlighting adifferent kinda fashion and Im pretty sure once they weather permits and you wear your Abo cumaar wind permitting too ofcouse, Im sure you could easily be American Idol and A somali villain. Just shows you why we will never been anything but Mundane n shortsighted cause we want what others have and not what we got. Kinda reminds me of running away from ones own shadow. Waa Ariin layablee
  5. About time too. Lets hope there is apositive nature to what Somalis can come up with. Perhaps someone shoudl organise a rendevous just for that. Talent quest and some kinda roadshow. Cheers sis. very harmonial of u too
  6. IS THIS DARBO BY ANY CHANCE? Surely afly on the wall CAM would have been a bestseller. I wonder what goes on around the corridors and certainly the picture below sums up what Somali leaders are all about. No diginity at all fighting in the corridors of foreign lands and making Somalis as awhole laughing stalks of this world.
  7. The Art Of How To Dress ( Originally Published 1902 ) The fashion of attire is a question of the passing day; its esthetics is a question of the ages. Persons of taste will avoid the ridiculous, whatever may be the demands of fashion, yet will not vary so far from the prevailing custom in dress as to expose themselves to ridicule from singularity. Dress has in it some of the essentials of the fine arts, and to be well dressed requires other requisites than the possession of wealth and a good figure. Good taste and refinement stand first; all other essentials come second. To dress well, the qualities of color, harmony, and contrast need to be observed, and a trained and artistic eye is as essential as a sensible and well-balanced mind. Dress, to be in good taste, by no means needs to be costly. Fit, proportion, and harmony in shade and color are the objects to be observed, and while there should be a reasonable consideration of the dictates of fashion, no person of sense will follow fashion blindly, to the neglect of the essentials of adaptation to figure, face, and occupation. A Well Dressed Woman. Some one says that "as a work of art a well-dressed woman is a study." The toilette of such a person is always well-chosen, with consideration of its purpose, and is always adapted to the situation, whether it be breakfast-room or ball-room, promenade or reception. If she loves bright colors, and they agree with her complexion, they will be as harmoniously arranged as the tints of an artist. If subdued colors are demanded, she will not let any desire for display lead her into the use of garish tints. If she is young, her dress will be youthful ; if she is old, it will avoid showiness. She will always rather follow than lead the prevailing fashion, and in no event will permit the costume of the day to lead her into violation of good taste and common sense. The golden rule in dress is to avoid extremes. To affect peculiarities of costume shows a lack of good taste, while it is not less unwise to follow fashions which are unbecoming to the special person. Ladies who are neither very young nor very attractive in appearance will do best to wear quiet colors and simple styles ; while those who are not rich can always appear tastefully dressed, if they exercise care in the choice, and display skill and judgment in the arrangement of materials. A dressmaker of good taste is an essential to good dressing. The dressmaker is a woman's good or evil genius, and may do much to make or mar her position in social circles.
  8. It is indeed avery interesting read. It somehow gives you an insight into the Somali pysch too and the uncompromising nature of our women and men to achieve their goals.
  9. Insecurity and lack of confidence are obviously the weaknesses that Ads are targeting. Bashi and Kruella thanks for your avid responses. I’m of the opinion that from Apartheid days in S. Africa where they used the “Pencil Testâ€. A pencil was passed through ones hair and if it got stuck one was declared black hence sent to the townships, Somalia where the lighter coloured tall gals where the toast of the towns/villages to the west where most of Ads feature cute tall and pretty fair ladies doing what they do most on the catwalk have mainly contributed to these growing aspects of most women changing their images, shapes and ofcouse shades for better careers and pretty much successful relationships. I sometimes think of it as the “Doll human†there to be admired and looked at rather than the true human. Advertisers are simply fulfilling (and fuelling) a latent need (insecurity) among the great mass of mostly coloured consumers. Now in most Matrimonial sections too in newspapers you will see that most Ads solicit girls with fair complexion. What happened to the confident black beauty lately?
  10. Common bro ....Arent we going off topic here. Perhaps you can try again and answer the real question instead of going ramroading us into some philosophical mambo jumbo. I suppose we all do have different perspectives about life but then again, there are always a solutions to problems and I believe everything has an answer of some sort regardless of whether its right or wrong. All your need is back up your opinions with facts and you there. Try again and lets see what you come up with.
  11. Lately, I have noticed that a lot of the sisters have gone through some strange metamorphisms allegedly due to the new trend in the media TV/Magazines and the abundance of major makeup inventions that have truly change a truly black beauty to a very lighter shade of complexion. Now I have always been wondering why this happens when truly as Somalis, we got some of the loveliest skins and complexions in the world. Simple questions that have been gnawing at me are. why is there a need for these? Do you ladies need to look lighter just to conform/fit in to the white culture? Literally observations rather than criticism.....
  12. Im not so sure what the article said as I didnt read it, however, if I were you folks, I wouldnt jump the gun here and think of the worst as most of you are already doing. There are many things happening today in this world which are allegedly done in the name of Islam and are totally contrary to the teachings of Islam. This could be just be one of them and Im sure as Ngonge said it could be anything but Islamic. Besides we are in a situation where Islam is being targeted by far too many people out there. For all we know this may have happened for along long time and is just being highlighted.
  13. This is pretty old but atleast it would give you some indicators as to how many somalis are infected by the disease. Its probably now doubled. Aids Stats Somalia
  14. Well for those who are interested in shiisha here are a few pointers and as Yasmin pointed lets not get off topic now and continue discussing the what shiisha is all about. Tips for Shisha Smokers The small, unscrewable appendage with the tiny ball bearing in it on the opposite side of the Shiisha from the hose is a release valve. (Don’t lose the ball bearing investigating it—the ball keeps air from coming in when you suck on the hose.) If your shisha gets too strong, blow through the hose and the excess smoke in the base will escape here. It’s generally a good idea to keep your Shiisha on the floor. Get your rubber collar wet before putting your Shiisha together or taking it apart. Use a bit of washing up liquid [dish soap] on he big rubber fitting; after a couple of goes it becomes nice and easy to dissasemble. It’s easier to use a few layers of masking tape around the main pipe rather than a rubber collar. A hole-poked layer of aluminum foil over an almost full bowl of shisha means you can smoke for a long time and that you can easily knock off the old coals and add fresh hot ones.—local shisha cafe (Of course, not all of your shisha may burn up this way: a concern if you want to conserve tobacco.) I find it extremely important to use the aluminum foil between the tobacco and the coals, else the shisha never lasts long. Using much coal (more than three medium-sized pieces) creates more smoke, but the smoke tastes less. Using less coal creates more taste in the smoke, but less smoke, which results in one pipe lasting much longer (a couple of hours or even more). If you are hooked on the thick, smooth smoke, then use more coal; in all, you get the same amount of taste in one puff. However, if you are smoking for the taste, then use less coal, and make your tobacco last forever. A good way to smoke pot out of your Shiisha is to smoke your shisha normally for a few minutes, then lift up the coal and sprinkle some pot “shake†into the bowl and put the coal back on. You can put several things in the water to improve the taste or the amount of smoke the Shiisha produces. Milk will make the smoke thicker in the cost of having to wash the different components carefully after smoking. Mint leaves or slices of lemon will improve the taste of the smoke. Squirt an orange all over a bowl of apricot shisha. Mmmm!! And I threw some cuts of the orange in the water . . . which made a very very slight difference in itself . . but seeing fruit bubble around in the jar was cool to look at, in the least. For smoking in an open place, make a small chimney from the top of a 2 liter Coke bottle to protect the coal and put it on the ash dish. If you break your glass Shiisha base, it doesn’t mean the Shiisha is lost. Get a plastic bottle with a wide base, cut it so the brass part fits in and it works perfectly. In some occasions, it came out better than with the glass bottle
  15. Its great news however, being Somalis we can always turn on each other just as quickly. So lets hope the ideas keep coming and the investments encouraged and hopefully people will come to their senses and know the meaning of life. We need more peace to prosper Inshallaah
