salaama king_450, I hope you realise you can access this thread anywhere that has internet. Even if you were going back to Somalia (lets presume)

thanks for the article jiidawy, Somehow this doesn't suprise me, its worthy of the US. first they bombed the al-jazeera headquarters in afghanistan and claime it was an incident and now the one in Iraq.

lool@rudy...thanks sxb, that'll stop some of the hypocrites...he he. Sistas, you wanna put all that good talk into practice? then please holla back at rudy..... of course your gonna talk a good game on the net, but if you were in your living room right now presenting Rudy to your folks, it might be a different story. In theory somali civilisation would be better served if tribalism did not come into play socialy, but until we apply this theory to our reality; most of us in here are HYPOCRITES.

Entrepreneur, First let me say that the point of this article was not to engage in a debate, instead it was to inform people. There is not much new material in this article, other then the fact it comes from a non-somali source which shouldn’t be biased in it’s view. We have engaged in many such debates recently on this site and it never really amounted to much. It was always clouded by “propagandism” as you say, and a lot of it coming from the pro-unity camp concerning facts about Somaliland. Now I did point out this article because it was written by a highly educated foreigner and a man who is very much experienced in diplomacy. why? Because other Somalis won’t accept facts about Somaliland from somalilanders themselves and will discredit those facts as “propaganda” like you said. Of course you would like to simplify this into a matter of a Somali sucking up to “the white man”. Secondly let me tell you that your statements did not differ much in terms of using manipulative logical arguments to dismiss the credibility of the article or the author himself. Very much like Samurai warrior, I could point them out to you but I won’t bother this time. Another point To have a healthy debate, scholarly or otherwise I think we have to move on from propagandism, sepratism etc to one of a fair analysis based on facts how can you dismiss “separatism” from any argument on Somaliland and assume we’re going to have a “fair argument based on facts”? It doesn’t make sense to me, given that Somaliland is a separatist republic and the idea of “separatism” would be the heart of the issue. Well I guess that is the case that you would make right? To proove that the somali peoples have been united throughout history. I'd be glad to hear anything you have to say on that matter, there are probably plenty of ideas we can learn from one another on that topic. p.s. you can check out the past threads where people have argued over the independence of Somalliland if you like.

Looool@shyhem, you one of a kind sxb, I agree with ya 100. We young somali men gotta come up with original way to approach our sistas, naw mean.

Iilaheey haa uu naxariisto SNM, how about that OG? By the way, saying "salalahu aleehi wa salaam" in arabic and "Peace be upon them" in english to me doesn't hold the same weight. You can acuse me of blasphemy if I said the former about SNM in arabic, but by saying Peace be upon them I just ment to say "Ilaheey haa uu naxariisto" you understand? now it is my fault if I confused the two translations in english , but don't cloud my intentions.

Manshallah, (beautifull flag) Somaliland queen wlc to the site. I think its important we all learn the accomplishments of the Somali Youth League as a part of somali history. "Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" confucius OG_Moti, to me every inch of somalia is mine ... I realize you might think your saying this quote in a positive manner, but you should be careful in using that quote. It once was part of the poisonous indoctrination that lead to civil unrest and chaos in the former republic of Somalia. It is along the lines of the thinking adopted by the BARE regime.

king_450, sxb no offence, but its very hard to take you seriously. I don't mean to be harsh, but leave adult conversations for the adults. I understand you might be an intelligent kid, but be a little patient and try to observe more often before you speak. rudy, I understand the map your talking about, and I even think hornafrique as it posted on another thread. But my point was that the country represented by that map obviously never saw the day, so lets be realistic. [ May 31, 2003, 07:31 PM: Message edited by: Admin ]

well samurai, You say I should dispel any antagonising of your part concerning Somaliland, but with all do respect that his hypocritical. Among many of your statements, you minimize Somaliland’s territorial integrity into little bits and pieces and pretend not to be antagonistic. the feelings of the people in regions of Hargeysa, parts of Togdheer, and arguably Awdal. As for your argument against the author , you’ve used 2 mains tools of logical argumentation. (Philosophical) 1) “ad personam”(latin) argument: This argument consists of minimising or darkening the speaker himself in order to invalidate his argument. 2) Trial of intention: This argument presumes the intentions of another person. So you see the point I’m trying to make is, even though you might have met this man, you’re not directly attacking his arguments, instead your resorting to manipulative tools to discredit his arguments. I think you’re intelligent enough to not warrant these weak methodologies in argumentation. As for your claim that he is on the payroll of the government in Hargeisa, to me sounds absurd. A man of his status requiring pay from a government that is barely able to sustain itself with its obvious lack of funding, just doesn’t make sense. But I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and would welcome any substantial proof you can provide to this claim.

nice map horn_afrique, I've seen this one before. It's the stuff dreams are made off, but at some point we have to wake up and face reality my friend. it would be nice if we somalis could lay claim to the Ogaden territories, Hawd and the south western territories occupied by Kenya. But One step at a time. You cannot go from anarchy to claiming so called "recognized and sovereign territories" of other nations. Speaking of recognized, theres is a bit of Irony in this involving Somaliland. Many Somalis like Hornafrique and my self don't see territories like the Ogaden as part of Ethiopia. Yet they are so called "Recognized" borders of Ethiopia. If you tell an Ethiopian that the Ogaden regions don't belong to his country, he'll ask you to go look at the map "recognized by the UN of course". Even though he very well knows that the majority of ppl in that region are somali, and they are against Ethiopian occupation. I find it very Ironic that this is the very same argument used by anti-Somaliland patrons. A function Somali state with the borders represented on that map is at least a few decades away, if ever possible. By that time it is well possible that Ethiopians might overun the occupied territories and replace the somali populations with their own.

This article published by the CSIS (center for strategic and international studies) and written by an experienced US diplomat to East Africa, embodies most of the hopes and concerns of a Somalilander like myself. This man is very knowledgeable of Somali affairs and has dealt with us for over 20 years. I was very impressed on how he touched on not only the bright spots of Somaliland but also the great obstacles we have to surmount (i.e. the political motives of Saudi Arabia; Djibouti's fear of Berbera). If those who are quick to judge Somaliland had half the knowledge of this foreigner, we wouldn't have some much ignorance going around today. I invite all members of this thread to read this article in its entirety, especially if you’re going to reply to this posting. Somaliland: The Little Country That Could (David H.Shinn)

for many great pictures of Somaliland and Somalia go to: pictures of somalia somaliland pictures including one my favorites, the dagaxtuur statue in Xamar

Gediid, thanks for the wedding pics looks really traditional. I like that. Bari, you sure know how to twist a story around, I give you a tumbs up for manipulating information. Did you take notes from the iraqi information minister?
-
Rudy, does your "one country under the sun" include Djibouti? if so when did this country ever exist?
-
thanks for the article hornafrique, I agree with you libaax when you say The new government is trying to get a good grip on power Also there are definitely some legitimate issues to be concerned about. I'm glad the author has put some of the events into writing for the rest of Somalilanders to read. However I don't see these situations as "grave", I have a feeling the author has somewhat of a political motivation himself. These are definitely some trying times for Somaliland, and I hope the government can maintain peace in a orderly and lawful manner. I hope the president and the members of the UDUB party can address some of the issues raised by this article, I for one believe that government critic is part of a healthy democracy and should never be hampered . No democracy is ever perfect and Somaliland is only in its infantile stages, and yet we take great pride in being light years ahead (in democracy) of 90+% of African countries.

LOOOOL, Bari_nomad you can't fool me, I know your intentions. But if you really wanted to spread propaganda, I think you could've done a betta job. Barwaqo, walaal you might be innocent to Bari's intentions, but if you had followed his postings you would understand, the 2 "areas" he picked (hargeisa, bossasso) where not by coincidence. So please don't speak of what you don't know.

entrepreneur, sxb believe me I have no love lost for Siyad the dictator, but it is part of our "diin" to say "allah ha u naxriiste" for any dead person. Regardless of their sins, it is for allah to judge them and we leave it up to him. When we say "allah ha u naxriiste" we are aslo implying that Allah be merciful on him for his sins (naaxariis). This is different from saying may God send him to paradise, instead we leave it up to Allah. However I do understand your frustration at some of the people in this forum saying words like "marxuum" only when refering to Barre.

(infamous)Mobb_deep, thanks for the kind words sxb, I notice your laid back attitude too and we need more nomads like you around. We all need to start given each other respect ya know. Anyway back to the subject. I agree with you alot has changed since the 60's, but here is another map which shows more detail. somalilandgov.com this is from the somaliland gov. website, and you see where their might be some problems with the claims of the possible futur independent state of Puntland(Sool and Sanaag). What do you suggest as a solution so that Puntland can declare independence peacefully (if they wish)? that is whitout any conflict with Somaliland.
-
Bari_Nomad, are you trying to make a point with those comparisons of Hargeisa and Bossaso?? You can manipulate pictures however you like, fact remains the most prosperous city in former Somalia today is Hargeisa.
-
Not very surprising is it Shujui? you probably also heard about how dick cheney's old company "haliburtun" (I think) received the biggest contract to rebuild Iraq's oil industry (worth billions of dollars, huge!!!) whitout even having a biding process with other US companies.
-
I don't see why Puntland wouldn't be able to declare independence, if the people want it then they should have it. However one MAJOR problem would arise with the map presented by Mobb_deep. They are including Somaliland territory on their map. It is only in recent years that Puntland has started to claim Sool and parts of Sanaag. this is the map of somaliland somaliland map If Puntland declares sovereignty tomorrow over the Sool and Sanaag region, its going to lead to a dangerous situation.

La Ilaa!, now we got somalis raising american flags. What is the world coming to???
-
wlc entrepreneur, I remember that nick from somalinet. I'm sure you'll enjoy some of the intellectual debates.

hornafrique, thanks for the pics sxb. Notice how the residential areas in hargeisa are very flat. I very much like the direction new hargeisa is headed towards.
