Men who are happy to burn people's homes while their clansmen's homes are safe and prospering, Men who used Xabashi troops against them to subjugate them. Xoogsade- I stopped responding to you long ago when you tried looking for an exit strategy on a U.N report of Indhacade's drug farms around Buulomareer, but this is something I need to question. What about Cali Maxamed Gheedi? Is he not the prime minister? Does he not have the same blame as Abdulahi Yusuf? What about Hussein Aydiid and the others? Where are they from? Are the Somali TFG forces in Xamar not majority composed of Xamar based clans? Ninyaho uurkaad ka jiran tahaye sida isku dhaan. I have respect for people like Rahima because she stands up for her what she believes irrespective of clan. To an individual like her, the TFG is an entity she cannot support soley based on her principles. That is raganimo; something you lack as a man and she has as a woman (no pun intended). Ninyaho sida isku dhaan ficil qabiileedkaan iska bixi. The same thing could have been said about the ICU and the same evidence could have been derived from the constant public disturbances and unhappiness during the ICU's control over Kismaayo, but you know what? Not once did you see me blame the ICU as a whole, nor the respectable people in there because I saw a difference in a hothead like Indhacade as opposed to a genuine individual such as Sheikh Sharif. The structure of the ICU would not have allowed it to be blamed as group but the structure of the TFG does not allow it to be blamed individually. Everything in the TFG is interrelated. Stand up for your beliefs and oppose the TFG as a whole based on your principles instead of coming here lament about a section of it simply because they are not from your clan. This TFG as far as I am concerned is in the same big bed. Either they are all worthy of our opposition and criticism or they are all worthy of our support and confidence. Wax ka dhaxeeyso intaasu ma jirto.

Ethiopia to withdraw third of Somalia troops ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - A third of Ethiopia's troops in Somalia are expected to have withdrawn by Sunday, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said. "We are reducing troop numbers by about a third ... that process should be completed today or tomorrow," Meles told Reuters in an interview on Saturday. He refused to say how many troops had been in the country during a war to oust Islamists who ruled southern Somalia for six months. Security experts estimated before the lightning two-week Christmas war that Ethiopia had sent between 5,000 and 10,000 troops into Somalia to back forces of the weak transitional government. Meles said he hoped to withdraw the rest of Ethiopia's troops "within weeks". Asked if he was confident that could be done, Meles said "Yes, because ... as far as our own mission is concerned it has been completed as far as supporting the transitional government." He said Ethiopian troops would continue backing the government "as long as we can sustain it but we cannot sustain it indefinitely, obviously, and therefore we can only assist to the extent of our capabilities". Meles spoke before an African Union summit on Monday and Tuesday which is expected to discuss the deployment of almost 8,000 African peacekeeping troops in Somalia to avoid a vacuum after Ethiopia withdraws. Without a strong military force, many residents and analysts fear the Horn of Africa country will slide back into the anarchy it suffered for nearly 16 years. Meles said the AU was suggesting deploying its troops by early March, but added: "We see no reason why the first African Union troops could not be deployed significantly earlier, let's say by mid-February." Uganda, Nigeria and Malawi have so far promised soldiers for Somalia and others are mulling, though Rwanda and South Africa have ruled it out.

So the good Sheikh is alive? One cannot help but wonder what Somalia would have been like at this moment if the ICU did not make a lot of the mistakes they made. Shiikha walle run buu sheegaya alaa oge, the only time Allah does not grant victory is when mistakes are too great and things are not righteous. Will our wadaado with our support rise and bring our people together in the banner of the Quran again? It is upto us inshallah! Wadaadadii doona ducana ugu dara waa na dubateene

Well the TFG forces in the central regions are based in Cadaado. After the incident, they moved in led by Col Lugeey, who was the former police comissioner of Caabudwaaq, to make sure "aargoosi" does not ensue in the city.

Garowe: Delegation from companies arrive in Puntland
Gabbal replied to General Duke's topic in Politics
Originally posted by General Duke: Somali thinker, Bossaso is already a trade hub for Puntland and Somalia in general. However with oil and NG, exports many avenues could be opened. If we get the money, I would like the state to concentrate on human development, capacity of the individual as well as the workforce, as well as infrustructure roads, ports, urban planning and so on. Singapore should be the model for Puntland. Duke, Singapore is a sovereign state whereas Puntland is part and parcel of Somalia. Are you advocating for engagement in the south but isolationism for Puntland? -
Originally posted by General Duke: ^^^Why the difference in treatment between these two and Sharif Ahmed? Well Sheikh Sharif was the head of the ICU and is considerably useful in trying to help quell some of the Mogadishu unrest. Also, my belief is the Americans are intent to divulge much secrets from him about the ICU.

Gunmen Kill Ethiopian Soldier in Somalia The Associated Press By NASTEEX DAHIR FARAH Gunmen attacked Ethiopian soldiers stationed in southern Somalia on Thursday, killing one and wounding another with a gunshot to the chest, witnesses said. The violence, an apparent sign of tensions between Ethiopian military forces and Somali civilians, broke out in the currency exchange market in Kismayo, said Abdullahi Hassan, a money changer. 'The gunmen used pistols. ... They have taken the Ethiopian soldiers' AK-47s,' Hassan said. Ethiopian troops, whose military strength was crucial to helping Somalia's government drive out a radical Islamic militia, began their withdrawal earlier this week. It was not clear when it would be complete. Many Somalis resent the presence of Ethiopian troops here; the two countries fought a war in 1977. But without Ethiopia's tanks and fighter jets, the Somali government could barely assert control outside one town and couldn't enter the capital, Mogadishu, which was ruled by fighters loyal to the Council of Islamic Courts. The U.S. accused the group of having ties to al-Qaida. The withdrawal of Ethiopia, which says it cannot afford to maintain troops in Somalia, has begun in advance of the arrival of a proposed African peacekeeping force. The African Union has approved a plan to send about 8,000 peacekeepers for a six-month mission that would eventually be taken over by the U.N. Meanwhile, a businessman who financed Somalia's ousted Islamic movement pleaded guilty Thursday in a Nairobi courtroom to being in Kenya illegally, but his attorney argued he shouldn't be deported because he was fleeing for his life. Abukar Omar Aden, 72, a well-known commodities trader in the Somali capital Mogadishu, was charged along with his son, Omar Abukar Omar, who served as a finance official for the Council of Islamic Courts. The son said he had a visa for Kenya and denied entering the country illegally. 'They are here because of a life-threatening situation, they were running for their lives,' defense attorney James Orengo said. The two were arrested earlier this month as they tried to cross into Kenya after Ethiopian and Somali forces drove the courts militias from much of Somalia's south. Aden, who was paralyzed in a car accident in 2002 and uses a wheelchair, has said he gave money and goods to the Islamic courts movement _ and is believed to have been a major source of funding for the movement. He covered his face from photographers and spat at reporters as he entered the courthouse in Nairobi. The United States has accused the Islamic group of ties to al-Qaida, but Aden has never been linked to terrorists. Aden and his son are scheduled to appear in court again Monday. Also on Thursday, a Kenyan police official said U.S. and French citizens suspected of fighting for Somalia's Islamic movement were arrested by Kenyan police as they crossed into the country. The men, who were carrying three AK-47 assault rifles, were detained late Wednesday as they crossed into the far northeastern tip of Kenya from Somalia, the police official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. The area is near a suspected al-Qaida training camp, the official said. On Wednesday, U.S. defense officials said the United States launched an airstrike by an Air Force AC-130 gunship earlier this week in Somalia against suspected terrorist targets _ the second such attack this month. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the strike was carried out in secret, provided few details and were uncertain whether any militants were killed. In Washington, Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman declined to confirm any new strike but said that in general the United States is 'going to go after al-Qaida in the global war on terrorism wherever it takes us.' Earlier this month, Ethiopian and U.S. forces pursued three top al-Qaida suspects in southern Somalia, but failed to capture or kill them in an operation that also included an airstrike by an AC-130. The targets included Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, one of three senior al-Qaida members blamed for the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The U.S. Navy is also patrolling the waters off the Somali coast. U.S. sailors have monitored maritime traffic, boarded suspicious ships and interrogated crews in an attempt to catch fighters trying to escape military operations on shore. The U.S. ambassador to Kenya, Michael Ranneberger, who also represents U.S. interests in Somalia, met Wednesday with a top leader of the ousted Islamic movement in Nairobi, Kenya, according to an embassy official who refused to elaborate. Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, considered by American officials a moderate who could contribute to rebuilding Somalia, turned himself in to authorities in Kenya because he apparently was afraid for his life. He is not believed to be wanted by the authorities. Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, when asked whether he believed Ahmed should be part of the peace process, said: 'As far as I know, Sheik Sharif doesn't represent anybody.' Zenawi also said 'quite a few' Somali fighters captured by his forces were being held in Ethiopia. He declined to elaborate. Source: AP

Wealthy Islamist pleads guilty in Kenya By Rob Jillo Nairobi - A wealthy businessman who financed Somalia's ousted Islamic movement pleaded guilty Thursday to being in Kenya illegally, but his attorney argued he shouldn't be deported because he was fleeing for his life. Abukar Omar Aden, 72, was charged along with his son, Omar Abukar Omar, who was a finance official for the Council of Islamic Courts. The son said he had a visa for Kenya and denied being here illegally. The two were arrested earlier this month as they tried to cross into Kenya after the Somali movement was driven from the capital and much of the country's south. "Your honor, these people should have been given the protection of the law," defense attorney James Orengo said. "They are here because of a life-threatening situation, they were running for their lives." Aden, who was paralysed in a car accident in 2002 and is confined to a wheelchair, has acknowledged providing the radical Islamic group with money and other goods, and is believed to have been a major source of funding for the movement. He covered his face from photographers and spat at reporters as he entered the courthouse in Nairobi. The United States has accused the Islamic group of ties to al-Qaeda, but Aden has never been linked to terrorists. The men are scheduled to appear in court again on Monday. Their attorney said he will argue his clients' constitutional rights have been violated. Born in Mogadishu, Aden is a well-known commodities trader, dealing in sugar, cosmetics and luxury cars. He also once controlled the El-Maan port in the Somali capital and owned Mogadishu's Ramadan Hotel, where Islamic leaders held their meetings. Somalia, a Horn of Africa nation of more than seven million people, is struggling to emerge from more than a decade of chaos. In 1991, warlords toppled dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and turned on each other, plunging the country into anarchy. The Islamic courts seized control of the capital and much of the south six months ago, bringing a semblance of stability but terrifying residents with threats of public executions and floggings of criminals. Some businessmen backed them, welcoming the order they brought. Somali troops, backed by the Ethiopian military, routed the Islamic militia late last month and allowed Somalia's UN-backed government to enter the capital for the first time since it was established in 2004. Most Islamic militiamen have dispersed or are in hiding. - Source: Sapa-AP

A Somali tycoon is charged in Nairobi. Somali businessman who is believed to be the financier of the Islamic court Union appeared today in a Makadara court for being unlawfully present in the country and failing to register as an alien. The wheeled tycoon Abukar Omar Adan was charged alongside his son Omar Abubakar Omar after being in police custody for one month. On a wheel chair Abukar Omar Aden was escorted to the court, where he was charged for unlawfully being in Kenya. A room had to be created for the wheeled tycoon so that he could face the charges while in a relaxed atmosphere. Also in court to face similar charges was his son Omar Abubakar Omar. But just after the matter was mentioned, their lawyer James Orengo raised a preliminary objection saying his clients were a subject to a proceeding at the high court and the entire process of charging them at the lower court was an abuse of the court process. He asked Makadara Chief Magistrate Margaret Wachira to refer the matter to the high court where a constitutional issue concerning the two has not been determined. Orengo told the court that his clients were not illegal immigrants as stated in the charge sheet but had come to the country for fear of their lives. He said that his clients did not come into the country as economic refugees but as people who seriously needed the government protection because their lives had been threatened back in Somali. The court ordered that Aden to be taken to Kenyatta National Hospital for special treatment. Orengo will continue to argue his application on Monday. Meanwhile, The High Court in Nairobi has stopped the City Council from demolishing buildings and structures in a contested parcel of land at Milimani area off State House Road. Justice Roslyn Wendo also quashed an enforcement the council issued on January 19 that paved the way for demolition. Lawyer Kibe Mungai told Justice Wendo that the land in contention belongs to Margarate Wanjiru Gachuhi who is mentally handicapped and currently bedridden in one of the structures targeted for demolition. Kibe told the court that Isaac Wanjohi who claims to have bought the land from Wanjiru is engineering the demolition through the back door. Wanjiru claims to have acquired the land in 1968 and is accusing Wanjohi for infringing the Physical Planning Act that requires an expiry of 30 days after a notice is served. The tenants currently at the plot repulsed the City Council demolition squad when they had done almost 70 percent of demolition where property estimated at 30 million shillings was destroyed. Source

The good abwaan after seeing the mayhem and destruction following the ouster of President Mohammed Siyaad Barre, uttered this famous line that continues to resonate in post-Barre Mogadishu and indeed in most of Somalia; ...Duqii Doona ducana ugu dara waa na dubateene... That conflict is this conflict. That is why I did not even respond to topic itself seeing how Las Qorey was clearly mistaken about what they were reporting.
