Italy first in West to reopen embassy in Somalia 10 Jun 2009 16:56:28 GMT Source: Reuters ROME, June 10 (Reuters) - Italy will become the first Western country to reopen its embassy in Somalia, in a gesture of support for the transitional government, officials said on Wednesday. A meeting in Rome of the International Contact Group on Somalia, with delegates from 33 countries and international organisations, expressed support for President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed's government and urged others to follow Italy's lead. "There was a decision to reopen Italy's embassy in Mogadishu and this is very important," said the U.N. Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah. "The African Union has decided to follow suit." Ould-Abdallah said only Libya, Yemen and Kenya had embassies in Somalia's crumbling sea-front capital Mogadishu, ravaged by 18 years of on-off civil war. Italy's pre-World War Two fascist government controlled large parts of Somalia. The Somali government and its moderate Muslim allies are battling several groups of Islamist insurgents. Ahmed is himself an Islamist who previously led the Islamic Courts Union which controlled Mogadishu before an Ethiopian invasion in 2006. Aid agencies say more than 1 million people have been made homeless and about 3 million need urgent food aid in one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Somali Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, who attended the meeting, said the government would not negotiate with the opposition unless it laid down its weapons. He praised the efforts of the international naval task forces off the Horn of Africa in combating piracy and expressed hope that 16 Italian hostages held by Somali pirates would soon be released. The International Contact Group, founded in 2005, brings together the U.N. and countries committed to fostering peace in Somalia. (Editing by Andrew Dobbie)

And where is Puntland's president?

Perhaps the most underrated and under-talked about battles in the annals of Somalia's civil war history are the recent battles in Galgaduud between Ahlu Sunnah and Al Shabaab.

I do not know what it is about Kashafa but the young man is a master of disguise. When the Puntlanders debate with him, automatically whether he has hinted or not he is rebutted with the assumption he is an Afmadoow/Dhagaxbuur fella. Similarly, it has been entertaining to read in this topic Kashafa being rebutted with the assumption he is a Gedonian and is and has been partial towards either Hiiraale or the late president if not both. The irony is he is neither. -

The ARS leaders called the somali Government a Puppet
Gabbal replied to Garyaqaan2's topic in Politics
The foreign minister is extraordinarily suited to his post especially when you take into consideration the current era of Somali politics we are in. -
Kashafa- You are barking at everyplace and at nowhere at once awoowe. It is very unbecoming.
-
If you have become this emotional as a result of my little feed, I shudder to think how you will fare when and if it actually comes true.
-
And thus the question that begs to be asked is will Xassan Turki ever make it back alive to his base? According to my feeds, he most likely will not. I wonder why Xiin is so quiet? Or perhaps he is sticking to that age old mantra af-****olan waa dahab? How does he feel about this government aligning itself with some of the entities and personalities whose criticism he has been very vocal about? Well, arrintu kolayba waa haduu Alle idmo.

AC interviewed Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi

Originally posted by Daandurreey: Tuug waaye meles. lacagtu inuu la cuno lee rabaa. My first perception. I am not so sure the man is all genuine in the last part. The reality is no Somali "government" since the collapse of the old one has really been free of Ethiopian interference (even Abdiqaasim) and most of them have functioned directly under them controlled from a very small corner in the Ethiopian foreign ministry. Every penny handed to these "governments" equals a drop in Ethiopia's coffers. I think things are excellent the way they are. He is not anymore smarter than anyone anywhere else. 17 so-called government attempts and nothing to show for, who is going to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in these obvious flukes? The few that have been directly handed over have always ended up as pocket change, shared between the the corrupt Somali and his bribed Ethiopian contact in Zenewi's court. -
An epic Clan war : Sharif Ahmed sidelined as Turki Vs Chickens

J.B if I may ask, how do they deduce the cause of the death? Post-government collapse, Somaliland has lost thousands to internal civil war from the mid-90's to the recent grain war. How was the cause of death deduced?
-
Though I usually take anything AllPuntland writes with a pinch of salt, I would say there seems to be a very bad policy forming that could potentially come back to haunt the Sharif. If the individual is seen to be gravitating towards clannizing this issue and colluding with the infamous warlords of his clan, he will have set the whole "reconciliation" two steps back. He could win the battle, against Al Shabaab that is, but what will it do for him in the war, in the attempt to legitimize his leadership to the average man and reconcile this nation? Absolutely nothing positive. I can already bet south Mogadishu and other clans around the battle zone are watching this phenomenon more closely than Al Shabaab is. The man is in bad need of competent advisers with foresight if the report has an ounce of truth to it.
