Mogadishu - Two Somali journalists have been detained separately by authorities in the breakaway republic of Somaliland and the neighbouring self-declared autonomous state of Puntland, their colleagues said on Tuesday. Abdirahman Haji Dahir, a reporter with the independent daily Haatuf, was arrested in Somaliland's port city of Berbera on Sunday after he wrote an article alleging that there was a rift between President Dahir Riyale Kahin and his deputy Ahmed Yusuf Yasin. "The journalist should be released immediately as he only exercised his freedom of expression," Haatuf's editor Yusuf Abdi Gabobe told AFP by telephone from Hargeisa, Somaliland's capital. A police officer in Hargeisa, who asked not to be named, said the journalist had been detained because he "speculated" on the relationship between the president and the vice president. He said the journalist would be charged in court soon. Authorities in Puntland arrested Abdishakur Yusuf Ali, the editor of the independent War-Ogaal newspaper, on April 21 after the publication criticised Finance Minister Abdirahman Mohamud Farole, following the alleged sale of food aid by his ministry. Ali has yet to be charged. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Monday expressed concern over the detention of the two journalists. AFP

The administration of the breakaway Somali republic of Puntland has ordered holders of Kenyan passports to leave within seven days. Government spokesman Ahmed Asharo told the BBC that the orders were issued after Kenya's decision not to respect Somali passports. Correspondents say the order will seriously affect aid agency workers. Somalia has had no central government for 13 years and Kenya said that Somali passports were being widely forged. Puntland has declared its autonomy from the rest of Somalia but does not issue its own passports. Peace talks hit "We were very surprised by the Kenyan government's move and this is just to remind them that they should have given us time before they made the decision," Mr Asharo told the BBC Focus on Africa programme. He said the Kenyan directive has delayed the long-running Somali peace talks in Nairobi since traditional elders were unable to travel to join the talks at the weekend. The Kenyan authorities say the ban, which became effective this month, follows revelations that the Somali passports are no longer being issued in the capital Mogadishu but on the backstreets of Nairobi. They said forged passports led to security concerns and illegal migration. The president of Somalia's Transition National Government Abdulkassim Salat Hassan has also criticised the Kenyan directive. The TNG only controls small parts of the Mogadishu with rival factions battling for domination elsewhere. Somalia has been without a central government since 1991, when the then president Siyad Barre was ousted.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer: Seems moderate, slightly toward to left. Read somewhere the Seattle area is the most liberal in the United States, so yep all our papers lean to the left.

Interesting, very interesting.

The picture actually makes Bush look better then real live.

HornAfrique October Revolution's lovechild and staunch supporter of Abduqasbaaye Saladboy who held several position in the 21 wonder years of Siyaad government without any guilt or apologising for its crimes. Horn condemns Riyaale for being a member of the NSS but while being the 'numero uno' campaigner of of 'President' Saladboy who was a deputy in Siyaad's Ministry of Defense when Hargeisa and the whole Somaliland was being bombed and mined and has the nerve to talk about 'selective justice'. At least Riyaale acknowledges and apologised for the crimes committed. Waa waray When Ayoub looked at himself in the mirror today I guess he saw a lion I still love ya bro, keep up the nac nac
-
Petty really! What else are you guys going to shove down Mobbs throat next? He is an admirer of Arial Sharon? I remember him having a "Somaliland" flag as an avator a while ago? Does that mean he supports treason and seccessionism? Don't jump down MY throat next folks, I had enough people do that in SOL

what we want and reality are not necesarily the same thing, and no matter how we distort reality we are never able to change it. you still havent mentioned any outside organization such as UN organizations, Human rights group, NGOs, LNGOs groups who have collected any kind of data to support your claims. WE're finally getting somewhere. There isn't any trial going on or being prepared as of the moment. But if there was even your saintly SNM would be tried, I guarantee you Kowneyn no offense but the Jumhuriya is the same to me as ANN. I always take news coming from Somali sources with a pinch of salt You can never trust them
-
My last attempt to make myself clear to you Qudhac since we are obviously holding on greatly to staying on cloud 9  First of all this misleading gossip about the so-called court being set up by the Arusha court has already been established false by our dear brother Baashi and others. If you don't believe them, go check international news and see what you come up with. Don't try to shove ANN garbage down our throats. Second there will never be a "strickly Somaliland" trial, since in the eyes of the international community there is no such thing as "Somaliland" SNM operated in somaliland therefore if they did any wrong they did it against the people of somaliland, and if any actions was to be taken against them then it would come from somalilanders It is not about what you think for the last time! I just stated how a likely court proceed as. Every and all groups (rebel/gov/etc) would be investigated, whether you like it or not. Justice is NOT one-sided ina adeer. Besides how credible would it look if the Serbians were allowed to prosecute Milosevic?
-
Facts are fact dude. Don't be telling us maaweelo stories like "their crimes were done in Somaliland" as if that makes them less criminal na'mean. No selective justice . No hypocricy Straight to the point. Nailed it bro
-
See Qudhac we can all live in our own cloud if we want. It's just that it would look rather silly, since the rest of the people are on earth so lets clear one thing no one is preparing international courts for any SNM mujahadiins but what we know for sure is that there is concerted and looks like fruitfull effort to bring those afweyne cronies to court for their crimes agains SOMALILAND, this issue is clear as black and white What is clear as black and night is that you seem to think your opinion weighs heavily upon any tribunal concerning Somalia  I guarantee you that if a tribunal was set up, there would be alot of surprises and would be the opposite of how some people are already thinking it as.
-
Qudhac if someone has their eyes closed, only that individual can open them. I have no problem with a war crimes tribunal, infact I welcome it, but you must realize that if an international war crimes tribunal was set up for Somalia, all and any armed factions would be investigated right? And they aren't going to have "kacaan kids" or "SNM mujahids" run the trial, so people's personal opinions don't fog up the situation. no matter what tribe or clan you belong to.An Eye for an Eye, no mercy at all,or forgiveness. That is what I'm saying, because it seems as though our northern brothers wish to see anybody, except their own on trial. All and anyone with connections to any atrocities in Somalia, should be investigated and rightly tried.

Bush will not come back to reclaim the White House a second time, you mark my words. He is a one term president.

What people don't seem to understand is that Israel is testing the water. Israel is trying to see how far she can go, without any consequence, atleast from the international community. I think the Palestinian issue will be our ticket to hell, Allah (SWT) will surely ask us what did we do to help our bretheren in Palestine.

then anyone with half decent brian would think the bbc is bipartisan institution. I should think so!

Weather people like it or not the people of somaliland supported and loved the SNM which toppled the despotic dictatorship of siyad barre, what other non-somalilanders make of the SNM is irrelivant really cos the SNM operated in its own backyard and fought for and were backed by its own people. Qudhac no offense but that extremity is what has destroyed Somalia and continues to be an obstacle to peace and prosperity for Somalis. Not everything is right and wrong bro, everything has it's twist, turns, secrets, and problems. Yes, the north was attacked under the banner of the regime of the late presidentand the SNM rose to fight against the army of the former regime, but is that to say the SNM was godly and saintly? If you think that simply because you're from the north, than that is biased, partisan, and an extreme view. The real fireworks start when that point of view is faced with another extremist with an extreme view such as Siad Barre (ilahay ha u naxariisto) was the best president on earth, he had every right in attacking the north, and that the SNM were all thieves, criminals, and should be murdered because they commited treason against the state. What most Somalis lack is a moderate viewpoint. A person that is able to look at every situation and use good and sound judgement, without a hint of bias or partisanship. ALL AND EVERYONE WHO COMMITTED CRIMES AGAINST THE SOMALI PEOPLE SHOULD BE TRIED AND BE GIVEN A JUST PUNISHMENT, WHETHER THEY BE FORMER GOVERNMENT MEMBERS, SNM, USC, SSDF, SNF, SPM, etc. REGARDLESS OF SEX, CLAN, AGE, OR REGION OF ORIGIN. See you can still be a moderate, and have a hardline or extreme viewpoint.

Liqaye the article is somewhat confusing? When was a trial established, that an attorney was assigned to the late Sultan Hurre (ilahay ha u naxariisto)?

Is Kwame an African by any chance? Even second-generation?
-
Anyone can write what they want, let's not all rush to it like it's true. Why haven't any news organizations, even Somali ones, report it? Second of all why would an international organization name "Somaliland" and not crimes commited in Somalia? For those of you who forget, "Somaliland" is still a legal part of Somalia, whether you like it or not.

He pointed out that there was lack of gorowing society to its mature years-- genetical modification of society had taken place. We had been injected with medicines that made us grow faster than nature intended. An interesting point of view to say the least
-
you don’t expect him to preach to Somalis and tell us to settle our differences because we are Muslims and Allah is most forgiving etc. Most exactly sis! Me thinks that's what the above article conveys.

Professor I.M.Lewis is a man who has been in close touch with Somalia's political, cultural and social affairs for more than 40 years. He wrote a number of books about the Somalis which many scholars including Somalis deem them ad hoc, political, inconsistent and controversial in their background settings. Through out those years, Lewis cultivated ways and means of getting himself rich through his association with the political and social environment of Somalia. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was a close political adviser to Dictator Siyad Barre and it is believed in higher political circles that Professor Lewis taught Siyad Barre the arts of political deception, divide and rule scams, absolute dictatorship and national assets mismanagement. Further, from 1992-1995, Lewis acted as political and social consultant to the UNOSOM's ill conceived and badly managed intervention in Somalia. God knows what Professor Lewis fed into the UN project on Somalia but it was widely believed then that Lewis was urging the UN to put Somalia under UN administration for ten years and recognise the Northwest Province as a separate state. However, since the UNOSOM project foundered or failed due to its unjust and misguided policies on Somalia, Professor Lewis left no stone unturned in respect of the recognition of the so-called 'Somaliland'. He wrote numerous articles, gave public speeches and mobilised British public opinion towards this illusive goal. On 17 March 2004, the Professor sat among others in a room at the Westminster Parliament, London where Mr. Dahir Riyale Kahin, the leader of the secessionist junta in Hargeisa was welcomed by a British MP to tell the tales of their case ! What happened there was brilliantly and accurately published by the Great Somali Scholar Professor Abdi Ismail Samantar who was among the crowd in the hall. One wonders what motives Professor Lewis to take this path of dividing and dismembering Somalia yet again. His forefathers had already severely damaged and partitioned Somalia as it was known to the world. Is he doing this for the sake of justice and out of love to the Somalis ? I doubt it !. Professor I.M.Lewis is ungrateful man for the wealth and fame he obtained as a result of his long association with the political, cultural and social affairs of Somalia. His campaign towards a separate state for the Northwest Province of Somalia and other provinces as well carry an ulterior motive and a deep hatred for the Somali people and their rich Islamic culture. Some Somali narrow minded folks may think that the Lewis activities in this respect is like a mother's love for her kids and that the Professor is a god sent hero to them ! But the heart of the matter is; to I.M.Lewis all Somalis are the same to him and all schemes must be used to destroy their unity in East Africa. This concept of hurting and fragmenting the Somalis in the Horn of Africa is not particularly a Lewis thesis. It was done by colonialist Europe in 1884 at the German city of Barlin and that philosophy still continues for whatever reasons and motives. Professor Lewis seems to have learned some techinques and tricks from his country fellow Lawerance of Arabia who succeeded in turning the Arabs against the Turks in the first w.rld war and second world war and in the process destroying the Islamic empire and unity, Arab unity and created tiny Arab states out of one country like Iraq etc. Whether Profess Lewis will be as successful as his brother in faith Lawerance of Arabia would remain to be seen. But one thing is certain, people in the 21 century are different from those in the 18,19 and 20 centuries and therefore neo-colonialism, repressions and genocidal methodologies will not work in todays world. Finally I would urge the International Community not to be fooled by the hallow and perhaps nonsenical thesis and arguments of Professor Lewis in respect of so-called 'Somaliland' because he is not being honest in what he says and moreover his social and political record in relation to Somalia is very much tainted and ridiculed. As for the Somalis who understand and have any dignity and honour in them should distance themselves from Lewis and work hard for the unity, sovereignty and terroritial integrity of Somalia.
