WIND- Thanks for the post. I was at work today when an Eritrean colleague printed out this article and gave it to me. But he also asked me one question: " Since when is this news? " LOL you should treat your friend out to lunch for his honesty. Too bad some of us, due to misplaced loyalties and qabiil affiliations, are not privy to that senitment. I posted this article in an attempt to show certain nomads around here that Col Yey is but a man and has a lifespan, but that Ethiopia will always have malicious intentions against our very name; SOMALI.

Ethiopia as an enemy is engraved in the collective memory of Somali people By Bashir Goth Al-Jazeerah, March 19, 2005 The newly formed Somali parliamentarian's fist fight over the deployment of Ethiopian troops is a small precedent of what is in store if Ethiopia and IGAD countries insist on including troops from neighboring countries in the peace keeping forces to be sent to Somalia. It is not only wise but also pragmatic to exclude troops from neighboring countries and particularly Ethiopia from the African or international peacekeeping force for Somalia. The name Ethiopia is engraved in the collective memory of the Somali people as an enemy of Somalia and Islam. From the 16th Century when Imam Ahmed Ibrahim Al Gazi, commonly known as Ahmed Gran or Ahmed Gurey, launched a religious war against Christian Ethiopia, a psychology of enmity had marred the relations between the peoples of the two neighboring countries. The British annexation of Haud and Reserved areas to Ethiopia when the struggle of Somalis for their struggle was at its zenith had hardened the feelings of Somalis against Ethiopia and spurred their patriotic fervor of unifying all Somalis under one flag. This included also the Somalis of Djibouti, French Somali Coast by then, and those of the Kenyan Northern Frontier District, known among Somalis by its nationalistic name of NFD as well as the British Protectorate of Somaliland (now Somaliland) and Italian Somalia. The latter two parts became independent in 1960 and entered into an ill-fated union; making the Somali Republic. Since then liberation movements armed and financed by the previous civil and military governments of Somalia have fought relentlessly against Ethiopian, Kenyan governments and French colonial authorities in Djibouti. The various ****** liberation movements, the Shiftas in Kenya and the liberation movements in Djibouti in early sixties up to late seventies were all part of this scenario of liberating Somalis from foreign domination and bringing them under the banner of the blue flag with its five cornered star representing the five parts of the Somali people. The decision of Djibouti to stay away from Somalia and the defeat of the Somali military in the ****** desert by Soviet and Cuban supported Ethiopian forces in 1977, have dealt a mortal blow to the dream of Greater Somalia. However, the brutal and dictatorial regime of Siyad Barre had put the final nail on the coffin of Greater Somalia when he turned his military might against his own people, thus forcing the mushrooming rebel movements to seek refuge and military support from Ethiopia. Though under a new and younger leadership who owe a lot to the Somali people for the assistance they received from the Somali government during their struggle to topple the communist and tyrannical regime of Mengiste Haile Mariam, it seems the Tigrean regime in Addis Ababa has found the disintegration of the Somali state as a god-sent opportunity to fulfill its centuries old goal of portraying the Somalis as unruly nomadic tribes that cannot survive away from the influence and rule of the Ethiopian empire. Exploiting the chaos created by the civil war and the vacuum created by the removal of the central government, Ethiopia found it easy to play the opportunistic warlords against one another and change them like a deck of cards as she wished. The Ethiopian Tigrean leadership has failed, however, to read that the strong anti-Ethiopian psyche of the Somali people nurtured by years of nationalistic propaganda by successive Somali governments and genuine blood-ties between Somalis was hard to die. The outcry of the Somali people everywhere against the deployment of Ethiopian troops is but the tip of the iceberg of the hostile attitude waiting to greet the Ethiopians in Mogadishu. It is also worth remembering that with the first killing of a Somali by Ethiopian soldiers in Mogadishu or anywhere else thereafter will rekindle these centuries-old enmity and open old wounds. Not only the nationalistic feelings will then be re-awakened among Somalis but the banner of Islam will also be raised against the occupying Ethiopian troops and the heroic deeds of Imam Ahmed Gran will be recalled and preached in the Mosques. This would definitely give a new lease of life to Militant Jihadist groups which would have otherwise seen their end in the hands of Abdillahi Yusuf Ahmed, known for his secular attitudes and his strong intolerance to Islamic movements. Fatwas on Jihad would be issued and streets of Mogadishu would witness bloody clashes between the Somalis and Ethiopian soldiers. It won't be surprising also to see other anti-Ethiopian liberation movements such the ****** Liberation Front and the Oromo Liberation Movement finding a golden opportunity to fight their war against the Ethiopian troops in the streets of Mogadishu. Such clashes would also grab the attention of the Muslim world; thus spurring foreign legions of Bin Ladens and Zarqawi's to find their way to heaven to kill the infidel Abyssinian soldiers in Somalia. This scenario may seem to be a little far-fetched or even depressing to those weary of the Somali problem and want to see a lasting solution for it but it would be foolish to escape from the ugly reality that the deployment of Ethiopian troops may trigger a fresh wave of terror and usher in a new era of instability, chaos and destruction in the whole region of the Horn of Africa. Saxardiid sxb there's alot of allegations in your post not supported by facts. For example: Why did the speaker of the parliament insisted parliament meeting to discuss the motion even though Kenyan government made clear that IGAD will exclude the frontline states? 1. The Kenyan government excluded itself a long time ago from any peace-keeping roles in Somalia, but had never commented on Ethiopia's stance. Zenawi on the other took every oppurtunity to reiterate his position offering to put peace-keeping roles "on the table". Why not the president didn't encourage his supporters at the parliament to vote in favour of the motion setting his arguement clearly? He had done that; mobilize his supporters to the point they would rip up the ballot box after sensing defeat. It's just that his supporters were not very large in numbers concering this motion. Why many mps especially those who support the government are out of the country only to miss the voting of the motion? The example being number of minsters and mps in Biadao who sent back the plane that should take them back to Niarobi without any safisfactory reason. True some where missing, but they weren't enough to even close to turning the tides in any which position. Besides men Saransoor and others abhor the Habesh. Now let me explain why the government wanted amxaaro to be excluded from the peace keepers. If you are speaking about the legislative branch of the government, then yes they have shown their disdain in bringing in Ethio troops. BUT the executive branch of government headed by Prime Minister Gheedi and the supposedly symbolic president were more then happy to include them. mr yeey was once most loyal one ended up in prison for not totally obeying their desires. The president became loyal after being jailed by the Ethios NOT vice versa Omar masale was also once used amxaaro to kick al ittihaad from Gedo. But when he accepted Cairo peace process they armed his no2 to disroy him. I concur that Cumar Haaji Massale did bring in Ethiopian soldiers to combat Al Ittihad in Gedo, then ordered them out, but I can vouch that he was still number 1 in Gedo until the diaspora members sent him out of the government for medical purposes. After being treated, the United States denied him permission to leave, but I've just heard that they have recently relented and he is currently in Europe planning to go back to Somalia again. So the president, the PM and the parliament where all in agreement that the parliament and the public should reject the inclusion of amxaaro with any peacekeeping in somalia. Therefore, I think it was mere show to confuse the amxaaro so they support somali government thinking that the only somalis that have any sympathy for them are the government and its leadership. But what about the blood and the harm that happene in the parliament? No pain will ever compatible with having large army in the country that only harm averybody. My only question is will the amxaaro buy that and keep supporting this infant government or will they start smelling the fish and turn the heat up for mr yeey? Oh pity, will Ethiopia turn against their poster boy? Oh how idiotic we've been, to misjudge our Wadani president  Spare me the cries pal Okie Dokie?

The MPs said once they start leaving Nairobi any day this week, they will give Yusuf 45 days to join them in Mogadishu, failure to which they will assume he has relinquished his position and "Act Accordingly". The Speaker of Somalia Parliament, Mudane Shariif Hassan Sheikh Aden, is the one sources say was leading the renegade MPs. I eagerly wait what will be Cabdulahi Yusuf's retort to this. Duke, do you now see that Cabdulahi/Gheedi opened up a pandoras box by accusing the noble Shariif?

No pun intended Oodweyn, but it would seem your credibility is much more intact when "Somaliland" is not the issue at hand. Though expressed with much flourish, the point you are wishing to make is very simple and understandble. The United States would rather keep the status-quo on the political dynamics of Somalia then risk creating a huge and unforseen military situation that would require international scrutiny and attention. A very fine point might I say, but I also believe that there are several other reasons the United States is challenging Ethiopian influence in Somali affairs on the current. 1. Ethiopian-American relations has been cooling for a period of time now. It has reached the point that the Ethiopian government denies the State Departments Human Rights report concerning it. Just recently Ethiopia accused Washington of writing "baseless allegation" against Addis Ababa. Washington took the liberty of calling back the American ambassador in Addis Ababa, and currently the Tigray regime is without an American envoy. 2. The Egypt-Ethiopian Nile dillema is also another factor. Egypt has promised to attack were Ethiopia to go ahead with their plans of building a dam. The United States cannot risk a war, yet Egypt a much bigger interest then Somalia's next door neighbor. Egypt is Washington's foremost ally in the Middle East and a friendly country to neighboring Israel. Because of that, the United States has unofficially taken the side of Cairo, the result of which has left Addis Ababa in a stand-still due to lack of international (American) support. The United States has its reasons for its policies, but I don't find it a coincidence that the cooing off of relations with Ethiopia came with the ascension of Dr. Condoleeza Rice to the highest post in the State Deepartment. Condi Rice is a foremost Neo-Con, who cares about naught save for the Oil Industry. The Oil Industry, as you know, is heavily intertwined with Middle Eastern politics. plus not many ppl are aware of the following facts: - the president c/yussef has the legal powers to ignore the parliament's decision and go ahead with his plans anyway - the president c/yussef can pass a motion to replace the speaker of parliament - the president c/yussef still has the logistical, financial support of the frontline states ethiopia, kenya and djinouti to its disposal in addition to the ugandan and sudanese troops under the AU banner wich in my opinion is better than that ethiopian troops come to our soil and create excuses for the muqdisho warlords to sabotage the peace process. i dont know why c/yussef insists on itoobiyaan, its irritating i wish i was president. marka the game is far from over na'm sayin. Mr. Thirty Nicknames exactly how old are you? Wind Talker have a laugh with me here pal

US opposes Somalia troops deployment, threatens veto Nairobi, 03/17 - The US has launched a stiff opposition to the planned deployment of a regional peacekeeping force to the war-torn Somalia and indicated it would veto any UN Security Council mandate on the same. The US has declared that it would not finance the deployment of the peace support mission, saying there was no need to use force in Somalia, preferring to treat the over 60,000 militias in the country as a mere problem to be solved through dialogue. The surprising opposition to the deployment of the planned 7,500 troops from neighbouring Kenya, Uganda, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Eritrea was made on Thursday as regional Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Council of Ministers started meeting in Nairobi to put final touches to the troops deployment plan. "While we appreciate IGAD`s intentions of stabilising Somalia, we do not understand the rationale behind the IGAD deployment plan and do not support the deployment of troops from the frontline states in Somalia," the US State Department said in a communiqué. "It is our strong view that the successful establishment of a functioning central government in Somalia can only be achieved through a continued process of dialogue and negotiation, not force of arms," the State Department said. The statement comes amid a series of preparatory meetings to plan for the logistical support needed to stabilise the new government. UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, while voicing his support to the deployment of the troops under the arm of the African Union (AU), said the mission "must be carefully considered and planned with the support of the Somali people." The UN Chief gave a cautious welcome to the troops plan, saying: "The role of regional organisations (IGAD) in fostering peace in their areas is clearly enshrined in the UN Charter.

^^ Thier last stand wont be in Somalia but by all indications it will take place in Nairobi. Todays events highlight how fearful they are. Duke you do realize that the whole ruckus begun after the your camp, the pro-Amxaaro/Tigray soldiers, disrupted the voting process after realizing they were on the loosing end. I think the Speaker of the Parliament has to be commended for going ahead with a hand count even after the despicable acts of the traitorous side. The Parliament is just beginning to realize just how powerful they are. They are just realizing that there is nothing the supposedly symbolic president can do without their blessing. The peace-keepers vote was a clear win for the parliamentarians and the biggest lose for the President/Prime Minister since the no confidence vote given to the first batch of cabinet members.

maanta loo ogolaan suxufiyiinta ay ka mid yihiin Ka mid yihiin meaning part of which are the listed websites. Whatever is going on in that Parliament ilahay baa yaqaan, but personally I wouldn't shed a tear for AllPuntland.com's expulsion. I'm not very familiar with PuntlandPost, SBC, (they seem decent enough to me) so I can't comment about them, but AllPuntland.com should have been disbanded a long time ago or their "reporters" taught the ethics of journalism. The reason I'm being hard on AllPuntland.com is because it's tragic that website that looks so respectable and has such a large and loyal (albeit misguided  ) readers can be so rubbish!

No border state troops in Somalia, donors say By C. Bryson Hull NAIROBI, March 17 (Reuters) - A call by the Somali president for peacekeepers drawn from bordering countries, already virulently opposed at home, appears headed for defeat under international donor pressure, diplomats say. Many Somalis, including warlords and militant Islamists, have promised to attack any troops from neighbouring states -- especially from traditional rival Ethiopia -- if they deploy as part of a planned African Union peacekeeping force. The dispute, which provoked sharp debate in the Somali parliament, is fast approaching a deciding moment. Regional leaders on Thursday began a two-day meeting in Nairobi to discuss the AU deployment. Diplomats at the meeting, held by ministers from the east African nations that make up the IGAD regional mediation body, said donors will oppose the use of any troops from Somalia's neighbours Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia. "It cannot happen. It can happen if they pay for it themselves," one Western diplomat told Reuters. Ethiopian-backed Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf wants 7,500 AU and Arab League troops to help his government return home from Kenya, and is adamant that border states be included. The AU last month backed a deployment of troops from IGAD members Uganda, Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia to tame rampant insecurity in lawless Somalia, but it has no money to fund it. Donors have grown increasingly cool towards Yusuf's plan, and the United States last month said it would not support any peacekeeping force with border state soldiers. Other donors, who have thus far kept their reservations quiet because of IGAD's lead role in shepherding Somalia's peace process, echoed that position on Thursday. "We wish to express our concern regarding the question of neighbouring troops in Somalia," Enrico De Maio, Italy's ambassador to Kenya and co-chair of IGAD's donor partnership, told the meeting. The United Nations acting special representative to Somalia, Babafemi Badejo, told the meeting that the U.N. Security Council would have to grant an exemption to a 1992 arms embargo to any foreign force deployed in Somalia. Several diplomats said the United States has promised to use its Security Council veto to block any force involving neighbouring troops. "We have said ... we would not be supportive of such a force in the Security Council," a U.S. official told Reuters. The official cautioned it was too early to say a veto would happen, since it may not be necessary after the IGAD meeting and next week's Arab League summit in Algeria. On Thursday, Somalia's parliament debated a Yusuf-backed motion to approve his plan, and both sides claimed they had the votes to win. But about half of the 275 MPs have publicly supported an alternative plan that would permit foreign troops except those from border states. The plan offered last month by Mogadishu MPs from the commercially influential ****** clan - including several powerful warlords -- calls for voluntary militia disarmament and re-training by former Somali police. Donors are encouraged, but say the plan needs improvement. "It's a gesture and one that deserves careful study," the U.S. official said. Washington has said Somalia has the means to secure its country, through the warlords that are now part of the government.

Israel formally gives up Jericho Israel has formally handed over control of the West Bank town of Jericho to the Palestinian Authority. Its troops began dismantling concrete blocks at the main checkpoint earlier on Wednesday and the handover was completed after several hours. Palestinian security forces will now patrol the town, but everyone leaving Jericho will still have to stop at an Israeli checkpoint on the outskirts. A BBC correspondent in Jericho said many residents were unimpressed. Jericho is the first of five West Bank towns to revert to Palestinian control. The others are Tulkarm, Ramallah, Qalqilya and Bethlehem. The deal was reached between Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at last month's summit in Sharm al-Sheikh. Mr Abbas is now under pressure to get Palestinian militant factions to agree to a formal ceasefire with Israel, and is currently holding talks with all sides in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. The handover of Jericho was delayed for weeks because of disagreements over Israel's refusal to remove its checkpoint. The formal transfer of control was sealed in a handshake between Palestinian and Israeli officers at a liaison office on the outskirts of the town. A handover protocol was also signed, following a slight delay when Israeli officials sought legal advice before putting pen to paper. "From this moment, we are resuming our control over the Jericho area," Palestinian Gen Ahmed Eid said after shaking hands with his Israeli counterpart. 'Good start' The BBC's Jonny Dymond in Jericho said that apart from one or two Palestinian police cars joining traffic in the main square, life was continuing as normal following the handover. Residents told him that though they welcomed the Israeli move, they were pressing for much more. One said the real issue was the release of Palestinian prisoners. One appeared to be oblivious to what had taken place, asking him, "Why are there so many radio and TV people around?" Jericho's deputy mayor told the BBC that Wednesday's handover was a good start, but the key issue now was to build up trust among Israelis and Palestinians. The full transfer of Jericho and its surrounding area to the Palestinians is to be completed over the next four weeks. Israel occupied the West Bank and Gaza Strip - home to about four million Palestinians - during the 1967 Six-Day War, but they pulled out of most densely-populated areas under the Oslo peace accords. Israeli forces reoccupied all the West Bank in 2002 after a spate of suicide bombings. Correspondents say their raids, checkpoints and travel restrictions have crippled Palestinian social and economic life.

Bro Horn Afrique the same person you support now can turn against you. Stop hating and move one.   You're very sensitive person this whole Politics Section isn't suitalbe for you.May I suggest you look for other sections. Politics is hard business no time for emotions especially current Somali Politics which is for Loosers and something you guys should't be involved in. I'am not suggesting that Horn is a minor but this goes for the children, young adolscent in this section. The whole reason Somalia is where it's at is because of a lack of sensitivity, leading to a lack of common sense. I don't equate sensitivity to the crying, sniffling type, but of being man enough to admit the truth. Horn sxb things has been change. Mr Hiiraale is in cricle know he has to share the pawore of accopaing kismaayo with jaamac dheer Things have changed for whom? therefore if 1 out of the 4.5 vote against Peace keeping forces, they would be considered minority. And pray how did you come to that conclusion  If you had conducted a foolproof, acreditied, and accepted survey, I would be more then happy to look at it. Sure that 1.0 has been the most vocal in their opposition to neighboring soldiers, but do not make the mistake of saying that anti-Ethio soldiers camp is limited them only. Good stuff as usual Duke

Did I not predict a while ago that the Ethiopian soldiers issue would be uniting a lot of people whether it's negative/positive concerning the transitional government?

Barre Hiiraale Oo Taageeray in Ciidamo Safka Hore ah Dalka la Keeno That's a blatant lie! Supporting Ethiopian troops in Somalia or supporting whatever decision the parliament reaches are two different things. “Aniga waxaa ka mid ahay Golaha Wasiirada Haddii Baarlamaanka Ansaxiixo in dalka soomaaliya la keeno ciidamo ka socda IGAD, gaar ahaan kuwa Itoobiya waa inaan Sharciga ilaaliya, maxaa yeelay meeshii loo bato ayaa raacayaâ€ayuu yiri Col Barre Hiraale oo Madax u ah Maamulka Isbaheysiga Dooxada Jubba ee ka taliya Gobolada Jubbooyinka. That should tell you Duke that no one is against this transitional government, although a sizable number of people hold reservations about Col Yey (you got this name stuck on me Wind ) heading it. Some might be using Ethiopians as a reason for opposition, but a majority of folks are genuinely concerned about legitimately bringing in Ethio soldiers into the Somali Republic. Do you know what kind of precedent that will set? Most people want a central government, they realize that it's now or never, and they hope for a reinstallment of the state and proudly calling Somalia a country again. For someone to judge our wish for peace on whether we are pro/con on the Ethio "peace-keepers" is ludicris! That speaks plain ignorance and doqonimo ina adeer.
