  2. Somali warlords deploy gunmen near Baidoa amid fears of Ethiopian incursion MOGADISHU, May 11 (AFP) - Somali warlords on Wednesday began deploying hundreds of fighters in villages in central Somalia following a reported incursion there by Ethiopian troops, militia leaders and witnesses said. Witnesses said hundreds of gunmen and "technicals" -- pick-ups mounted with anti-aircraft artillery or large-caliber machine guns -- were camped in Buolfulay village, which straddles Somalia's Bay and Bakol regions where the incursion reportedly took place. "We have sent our militiamen to the border of Bay and Bakol to avoid war with Ethiopians and their allied fighters who want to sieze Baidoa," said Yusuf Mohamed Siad, self-declared governor of neighboring Lower Shabelle region. "It is a national responsibility to help compatriots under seige by foreigners or those supporting the outsiders," he said. "Ethiopia is behind the looming hostilities in Baidoa." Baidoa is the capital of Bay and Bakol and on Tuesday a group of Somali lawmakers said villagers in the region had reported the presence of a large number of armed men backed by some 500 Ethiopian troops. The legislators also accused Ethiopia of violating a 13-year-old UN arms embargo on Somalia by suppplying weapons to various militia. The charges were immediately denied by Ethiopian officials, but in statements issued here and in Nairobi, the 83 MPs insisted that Ethiopia was attempting to help an ousted Somali warlord retake control of Baidoa. Siad said there were fears in the region that fighters loyal to Hassan Mohamed Nur "Shatigudud" might move beyond Baidoa into neighboring areas if they were successful in mounting an attack on the city. "If they capture Baidoa, those fighters may advance to the neighbouring regions," he told AFP. Siad and other Somali officials said the reinforcements were aimed at backing the leader of the Rahanwein Resistance Army, Mohamed Ibrahim Habsade, who ousted Shatigudud from control of Baidoa earlier this year. Fearing imminent violence, some 50 families left Baidoa for Mogadishu on Wednesday, witnesses said, and Habsade vowed to defend the city from any attack. "Our forces are in full readiness for the defense of Baidoa," he told AFP from his stronghold. Source: Agence France-Presse, May 11, 2005
  3. Somali MPs accuse Ethiopia of smuggling arms to Somalia NAIROBI, May 10 (AFP) - A group of Somali lawmakers in-exile on Tuesday accused Ethiopia of smuggling weapons to militias in Somalia in violation of a 13-year-old UN arms embargo on the war-shattered Horn of Africa nation. The MP's charges, made in Nairobi and Mogadishu, were immediately denied by a senior Ethiopian official in Kenya, where Somalia's transitional government has been based since it was since created last year due to insecurity at home. But 83 lawmakers, including ministers in the transitional government, were insistent about Ethiopian activity that they said could lead to an imminent explosion of violence in Somalia's central Bakol and Bay regions. "Besides donating assorted weapons to favored factions, unfortunately Ethiopian military personnel crossed deep in to Somali regions of Bakol and Bay in the last 48 hours," said MP Abdalla Haji Ali, a spokesman for the group. "It is a matter of hours or very few days before an Ethiopian-masterminded war breaks out in Baidoa," he told reporters. Baidoa, about 250 kilometres (156 miles) from Mogadishu in southern Somalia, was the scene of violent clashes between rival warlords in March over where the government should move when it eventually relocates from exile in Kenya. Hassan Mohamed Nur "Shatigudud," who serves as agriculture minister in the transitional government, was ousted from control of Baidoa in the fighting by Mohamed Ibrahim Habsade, allegedly with backing from Mogadishu warlords. Ethiopia is regarded with deep suspicion by many in Somalia due to its past support for a Somali faction opposed to a new government and many in the lawless nation have vehemently protested the inclusion of Ethiopian troops in a proposed regional peacekeeping mission. Ethiopia's ambassador to Kenya, Ajabe Digaba Walde, denounced the MP's charges as "despicable lies" and said Addis Ababa fully supported the goal of restoring peace and stability to the country after 14 years of anarchy. Somalia has been in chaos without any functioning central authority since the fall of strongman Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 turned the nation into a patchwork of fiefdoms ruled by warlords. amu/bkb/nb Copyright © 2005 Agence France-Presse Received by NewsEdge Insight: 05/10/2005 09:43:57
  4. Somali Politicians Warn of 'Violent Conflict Looming' By Cathy Majtenyi Nairobi 10 May 2005 A group of Somali parliamentarians say they plan to complain to the U.N. Security Council about what they say is a violation of the U.N. arms embargo by the Ethiopian government. They allege Ethiopia is supplying arms and ammunition to the militias of certain factions in Somalia. Member of Parliament Abdallah Haji Ali told reporters in Nairobi he and his colleagues are worried about what he calls "violent conflict looming," particularly in the southern and central regions of Bay and Bakool and the town of Baidoa in Somalia. Mr. Abdallah attributes this looming violence to the Ethiopian government's alleged long-time support of factions operating in these areas. "We condemn Ethiopian involvement and protest its military aggression against the Somali people by backing militias loyal to faction leaders allied or known to be allied with the Ethiopians,†said Mr. Abdallah. “The Ethiopian government have supplied these militias [with] armaments, ammunition, and personnel. Units of Ethiopian regular troops are known, and can be confirmed, to have crossed deep into the Somali territory." Mr. Abdallah says there are at least four Somali ministers who have militias operating in the regions and who rely on support from the Ethiopian government. Mr. Abdallah says Ethiopia's intention is not for one militia to defeat the other, but to prevent Somalia from becoming stable. He would not elaborate on why or how a destabilized Somalia would benefit Ethiopia. Pounding the table to make his point, Mr. Abdallah maintains that Ethiopia's actions violate the arms embargo that the United Nations levied against Somalia in 1992. "We have to petition to the Security Council as members of parliament,†he added. "We are appealing to the Security Council. We are going to complain about Ethiopia to take its hands off Somalia." Ethiopian government spokesman Zemedkun Tekle denies that his government is supplying arms and other support to Somali factions and says his country wants Somalia to be stable and peaceful. "Our position as the government of Ethiopia is very clear: we need to get a peaceful and strong central government in Somalia. Ethiopia has tried her best to get that kind of government in Somalia. There is no interest of Ethiopia to help one party than the other," he said. Ethiopia is a member of the regional grouping Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD),which spearheaded a two-year Somali peace process that brought together factional leaders, civil society leaders and others to end 14 years of anarchy and to form a new transitional government. Ethiopia's involvement in the peace process was controversial, with many Somalis accusing their neighbor of manipulating the process for its particular ends. Later, when IGAD proposed sending a peacekeeping force to Somalia, most Somalis balked at the idea of Ethiopian troops entering Somalia. Many Somalis are still bitter about the ****** war of the 1970s, in which Somalia fought with Ethiopia over control of the ****** region. Ethiopia won that war, crushing hopes for leaders of the time to create a greater Somalia.
  5. ^^There is more then one person here on SOL that can testify against that, but I was talking about facial features and long-curly hairstyle.
  6. For example, Somalis think they are not of Negroid descent, but Westerners consider so. I have never met a Westerner that considered me as Negroid. Maybe you live in the Arabian Gulf, but all Westerners that come across me (and I live in the good ole' USA) instantly recognize me as Somali or the next best guess Ehiopian, even though majority of Horn of Africans (Somalis included) mistake me for an Eritrean. What about the theory (scientific fact?) of humanity originating from the Negroid race? Never heard of that theory, though I've read plenty of research that suggests humanity originated in the African continent. I don't see how that led you to believe humanity originated from the "Negroid Race". Maybe your problem is you equate African to Negroid and Negroid to African? There are some stories about the Abbysinnians originating from Yemen. There are stories that allege a handful of Sabeans immigrated from Yemen to the Ethiopian highlands. They brought the ancient language of Gee-ez (which is the ancestor of modern languages like Amharic and Tigrinya), but those Sabeans were too few in number and basically become lost in the Agaws, Oromos, and Gurages they so heavily inter-married with. What about being labeled as Negroid? To be honest I have never been labeled as a "Negroid". Just recently I was traveling with some relatives by car in the American rural country when we stopped for food in the extrememly small town of Moscow, Idaho. Since the restaurant we ate in was located in a small, local mall we decided to stroll around in. The ladies in the make up department fell so in love with the "exotic looking" Ms Word (yes our very own SOL member ) they virtually begged her to give her a free make-up. She consented, so waited, and ever second or so the more blunt of the Caucasian folks that were strolling around would come over and talk about how they have never seen a more "beautiful" family and were we sure that we were "black"? Two old ladies even exclaimed loudly how my aged, but still very beautiful mother, fullfilled their every expectation of a regal Egyptian queen. And no, I have not fabricated anything, but if that is coming from small town rural American country folk who probably believe that the ancient Egyptians were white, then what do you think about the more waayo-arag Westerner?
  7. Can they beat Col Yeey in war? Remains to be seen.. Odayga waaba kasii badisay Wind, see waaye? Absaloutely without any political skills is all I have to say of the old man, and his advisors? Magacoodaa dheeraaday maahaane ee waxay siyaasad ka yaqaanan baa iska yar.
  8. Has it ever occured to people that we and our neighboring kins, the Oromos, Ethiopians, and Eritreans, are a race of our own? Neither Arab nor Caucasian nor Negroid, but a Horn-of-Africoid? Out of anything I believe the majority of Afro-Asiatic speaking Horn of Africans are direct descendents of the ancient Egyptians. Did you know Somali is the closest living modern language to the Ancient Egyptian tongue? I'm certainly not Arab (short-limped) nor "Black" (who wants to be labeled a color anyways?).
  9. Haddad- I have read enough discussions you took part in to know your either a natural cynic or just plain difficult for me to even converse with. Next thing you are going to tell me is how silk your hair is, how light your skin is, etc for people to mistake you for a Somali huh? Get real man, and go re-read my post in which I was clearly surprised at her "Somalization" and not her ability to speak the language. Her "Somalization" alluding to her gesturing, her indentification with the Somali people, her kaftan, her xifaalo etc. Ina Sankataabte- Two can say that again! It truly is a classic.
  10. Faysal Cali Waraabe is a joke within himself. I can't believe anybody would take him seriously, especially since Riyaale cut him off from campaigning to his constituency without even a single defense of himself.
  11. Seriously I couldn't believe how "Somalized" she had become with her acquiring of the Somali language. Profesarada

  15. US denies Somali incursion 06/05/2005 14:25 - (SA) Nairobi - The commander of the sole US military base in Africa on Friday vehemently denied a widely circulated report that US Marines had landed on the Somali coast this week seeking suspected terrorists. Major General Samuel Helland, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force — Horn of Africa, said the report had confused a training operation off the coast of neighbouring Djibouti last month for a militant hunt. "It's a fabrication of the exercise off the coast of Djibouti," said the Djibouti-based general, attending the inauguration of a new Marine housing compound at the US embassy in Nairobi. "To my knowledge there has been no Marine activity off the coast of Somalia other than the 5th Fleet ships sailing by on their way to Iraq," Helland said, adding: "There were no Marines ashore (in Somalia)." Thursday's report from Hergeisa, the capital of the self-declared republic of Somaliland in the northwest of the lawless nation, said about 20 lightly armed US Marines had landed in a fishing village on Tuesday and showed photographs of suspected militants to residents. It also said three US vessels, including a helicopter carrier, were seen the same day at a port in Somaliland, which has declared its independence from Somalia properly, but is internationally unrecognized. Helland said with the exception of the location the description of events corresponded to a training exercise conducted off the coast of Djibouti in the last week of April by the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). "At that time, elements of the 26th MEU came ashore and conducted live-fire exercises and did an amphibious assault across the beaches in Djibouti as well," he said. "The story appears to cover what the exercise was and that's all it was," Helland said, referring reporters to his command's website where an account of the operation entitled "26th MEU storms Djiboutian shores" is posted. He said the confusion may have arisen because of the often indistinguishable border between Djibouti and the Somaliland portion of Somalia but could not account for the discrepancy in timing. The Combined Joint Task Force — Horn of Africa was set up in Djibouti in 2002 as part of US efforts to fight terrorism following the September 11 2001 attacks. Helland assumed command of the task force in May 2004.

  17. Somali regional leader escapes assassination attempt Somali regional leader escapes assassination attempt Fri. May 06, 2005 07:32 am. Armed men stormed the residence of Mr. Barre Adan Shire who controls most southern part of the country including Somalia’s third largest city, Kismayo. Mr. Shire, a former army colonel was in the house when attacked. One bodyguard and one of the assailants were wounded in the shootout. The motive is not yet clear but Kismayo residents say the leader has doubled his enemies when he publicly supported the new Somali government. There’s also minor power struggle in his armed faction, Jubba Valley Alliance (JVA). Some unconfirmed reports say the attackers left the city. This coastal city has been peaceful with some occasional murders since it fell into JVA’s hands six years ago. Mr. Shire successfully kept JVA intact and Kismayo under their control for so long while other southern cities are either divided among rival groups or change hands frequently. Another close call happened when the prime minister was addressing the public in Mogadishu’s soccer stadium earlier this week. An explosion killed nine people and wounded many more during the prime minister’s speech. He was unhurt too.

  21. Haduu yahay o.k I believe him, laakiin his speech is in tune with individuals from Awdal's neighboring regions. This guy talks about grievences, yet even to the end Awdal is known for having remained one of Siad Barre's political strongholds and one of only few regions he had greatest support.

  23. there are no imminent threats to puntland or does it have to do with that the vice presidents kinsmen practically owned the NSS back in the day. From what I've noticed Cadde Muuse seems to be the best thing that happened to Puntland. The man is clearly aiming to strengthen the region through economic empowerment and sound security. You are a double edged sword sxb, sometimes I smell hypocrisy and double meanings in your posts, but Cadde Muuse should so far be applauded for his work.
