  1. Somali Doctor Network (SDN) is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to the pre-health and health professional Somali student community, or anyone who has interest in healthcare. Our mission is to assist and encourage Somali students as they traverse the challenging and complicated health professions education process. The organization is also committed to Healthcare Awareness for Somali communities, as an effort to make SDN to be an integral part of communities, which fosters goodwill in healthcare related issues within Somali society in general. http://www.somalidoctor.org/
  2. Hi Kashafa, The site is a discussion fourm, but it's also an idea. It's an action plan within the work of a website. It carries the name of somalidoctor because it is for those students who are mastering their career. It focuses on healthcare because we see that as a neccesity in somalia right now. I am sure people there need alot of healthcare. The forum has a space for other careers as well. We want somali students in general to provide motivation to each other and work together. Your ideas and opinions are most welcome: http://somalidoctor.com/index.php The forum has a space for other careers as well
  3. Doctor does not definitely mean a student but like I said anybody who has completed and mastered a higher degree is a doctor and I am sure many somalis fall into that cetegory or are working towards it. Besides this site was built with healthcare in mind because we think that is the part that is lacking the most in Somalia these days and it is a neccesity. This site was established to be bigger than just a forum and we are looking for people who might be useful to all Somalis. Therefore, seeing doctor shouldnt turn anyone off because even literal doctors or healthcare workers will be the future of somalia. By full-fledged membership features, I meant blogs and chats which we are going to start soon. We are not going to let each and everyone just see that, are we? We do have certain standards everyone should abide with and membership enforces those standards.Besides membership is a test to show the interest of the individual and how much he is taken with the site (or the organization). It is a small price to pay, isnt it?
  4. Haddad, The term "doctor" does not mean only those who have studied medicine or dentistry. The literal meaning of doctor is a person who has earned the highest academic degree awarded by a college or university in a specified discipline. Having that in mind, even though we do focus on healthcare fields, we have space for all other careers. What is better than getting all somali students together? We require others to register mainly because we want them to take advantage of the full fledged features and we want to verify that each person register only once. The point is if someone doesnt want to post, they dont have to (it would be great if they did though). So, I hope you understand where we are coming from.
  5. Najma, it would help you quite alot if you would visit this site where somali healthcare students meet and discuss their careers: www.somalistudents.com p.s. I am a dental major but my sister is going to pharmacy school. I work in the pharmacy myself until I go to dental school. My advice to you is keep your GPA high, contact pharmacy schools and ask them what they require of you to get admitted in their schools, take the PCAT and score high on that. Try to find a job in the pharmacy as a tech because pharmacy schools would appreciate it if they know you are little experience in the field of pharmacy. That will strengthen your application. And yes, do take part in extra-curricular activities, pharmacy schools like well-rounded students. If you have any further questions, pm me.
  6. There is a new forum for ALL somali healthcare students and even those who are not in those fields but are quite interested in it. In this forum, they can discuss anything to do with their fields and share knowledge and help each other with difficulties. Check it out: www.somalidoctor.com Thanks
  7. There is a new forum for somali healthcare students and professionals where they can discuss challenges faced by them due to their respective careers and inshallah overcome it together. Check it out: www.somalidoctor.com thanks
  8. This topic is an issue that is not mostly discussed by majority of the somalis and to be honest no one has a solution for the problem but everybody should be able to work together. Anyway coming to my point, solving somalia's issues can only come through education, wordly education as well as islamic education. This shouldn't only start in the country but ppl outside the country need to learn to educate themselves instead of only finishing high school and working hourly jobs. This can only be achieved with doctorate and phd levels of education. We dont need only doctors and engineers, we need artists, musicians, politicians (ones who are not leadership-hungry). Somalis need to educate themselves in all kinds of level. When it comes to Islamic education, we need to go to the Quran and not only depend on what the religious scholars say. They are also human beings, they could make mistakes. Only the Quran is the correct and everlasting document of our religion. I think somalia's problems could only be solved through education. When ppl get out of their ignorance, they will not be biased anymore. They will get to see beyond their world. They will get to realize that the other clans are humans such as them. Therefore, I think that is what we need and prayer to God to get us through this. That is a great topic by the way. We need to post things like this. Keep it up!
