Secondly, the invasion of SSC and their continuing threats against the rest of Puntland is aimed to de-stabilise Puntland which could in t urn accelerate the demise or collapse of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), a prospect which, if it materialises, is seen by them to be favourable to their recognition as the only remaining functioning entity in what they call former Somalia. • The I-s-a-a-q invasion, contrary to their misguided blinkered calculations, would rekindle the clan war in Somalia on a wider scale as other puntland clans join the defence of the D-a-r-o-o-d patrimony and the unity of Somalia against the invading secessionist ***** clan. Press Release Secessionist ‘Somaliland’ Embarks on a Dangerous Course of Desperation For Immediate Release The unfortunate, but internecine, conflict raging in Mogadishu between the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and its opponents as well as developments elsewhere in the country have apparently thrown the secessionist camp in Somalia’s Northwestern Region (‘Somaliland') into disarray and confusion. Early this year the secessionist camp made a series of demonstrations in the UK, followed by a petition to the British Prime Minister to recognize the enclave – a petition which was naturally denied. The secessionists have now – perhaps as a result of that denial – abandoned their claim to peace and quiet in contrast to “southern Somalia,” and have opted for a belligerent policy designed to bring two pro-Unity northern regions, Sool, Sanaag and Cayn (which rejected their secessionists’ project) within their camp through military conquest so as to demonstrate to the outside world that they control the entire area of what used to be called British Somaliland. Fully aware that Hargeisa does not have the ability to do that, perhaps this is a Machiavellian effort to instigate and drag the fully engaged TFG into a new conflict in the northern regions. Accordingly, mobilizing from far away Hargeisa, the Secessionists tried during the past two weeks to make armed incursions into some of the towns and villages such as Huddun, Awr Boogeys and Dhahar only to be rebuffed by the local populations. The bulk of their militia is made up of former SNM militia re-cast as a ‘Somaliland’ national army. At the same time the secessionists spared no effort in adding fuel to the fire raging in our national capital by trying to forge an alliance, albeit false, with the ****** – a clan which is unswervingly committed to the unity and territorial integrity of our country. We, the Northern Somalis for Peace & unity (NSPU) condemn in the strongest terms these nefarious acts on the part of the secessionists and we pray that our people throughout Somalia will surmount their difficulties and unite for peace and prosperity with a view of securing a more stable future for posterity. After sixteen years of repeated failures our breakaway northwestern region which calls itself “Somaliland” made a desperate and, we hope, final move to force the African Union to recognize it. Last year (June, 20-21) a delegation of the secessionist region arrived at the AU meetings in Banjul uninvited but was, understandably, denied admission. They tried, nonetheless, to lobby for recognition in the hotels where delegates stayed but had no one to listen to them.1 This year (January 31, 2007) they attempted to gate crash the meetings of the AU in Addis Ababa only to be evicted unceremoniously from the meeting halls.2 All of this was uncalled for since there is a way of becoming a member of the AU that is clearly laid out in its Charter. The AU is not sovereign: it does not and cannot, therefore, grant diplomatic recognition. It is a club for 53 African sovereign states, and a new country can be admitted as a member, not only if it is African, but also if recognized as sovereign by half the membership of the Organization. The self-styled Somaliland is not recognized even by one single member state or any state in the world for that matter. Hence its desperate attempts to gate crash the AU Ministerial meetings with the vain attempt of forcing a collective recognition unheard of in the annals of international organizations. With security and stability returning to Somalia and with the existence of an internationally recognized national government operating from Mogadishu the prospects of diplomatic recognition for our breakaway region is dimmed beyond redemption, and this certainly explains its apparent acts of desperation. The flimsy arguments of the secessionists in favor of their ill-advised and divisive project have never made any sense to anyone. The name itself “Somaliland” has no equivalent in the Somali language, and is also ludicrous in the sense that the entire Somali Republic is a Somali land. The name made sense when the region was called “British Somaliland” because it meant then “that part of Somali land which is under British rule”. Worse still, secessionist die-hards call themselves “Somalilanders” which even the colonial administration never used and which, again, has no equivalent in the Somali language; it is in fact so grotesque that it invokes laughter when translated literally into Somali. Northern Somalis for Peace and Unity (NSPU) take this opportunity, once again, to call upon our fellow northerners, whose obsession is secession, to take cognizance of the fact that they have reached a cul de sac and hence join the process of national reconciliation by entering into dialogue with the internationally recognized national Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in order to ensure genuine home rule for their region in parity with the other regions. Only by working together towards that end can we bring about a shifting of power from the federal government to the regional governments. ONE PEOPLE ONE COUNTRY (NSPU) October 17, 2007 PRESS RELEASE Secessionist Somaliland’s Naked Aggression against the Peaceful Region of Sool For Immediate Release Somalia’s Northern regions, which until recently enjoyed a relative peace, are on the verge of entering an era of internecine clan warfare similar to, and may be worse than, what has plagued the southern part of the country for over a decade. The Hargeisa-based clan-driven secessionists’ northern enclave of Somaliland, in the early hours of October 15, 2007, launched unprovoked armed aggression on the peaceful town of Las Anod, the capital of Sool region in the northern pro-unity State of Puntland. This naked aggression caused the death of at least 12 people and displacement of large residents of the city, as well as injuring unknown number of civilians. The local people are in arms defending their families and their properties against these invaders from their distant stronghold, Hargeisa, which is more than 900 Kilometers from Las Anod. The secessionists embarked on this adventure in the face of last week’s decisions by the Traditional Leaders of Sool, Sanaag & Cayn regions and their Diaspora communities calling on “Somaliland” to refrain from invading Their clan territory and for their citizens to defend their native soil against the military incursions by the secessionist’s militia. The invasion of Las Anod comes only few months after a failed attempt to occupy, Dhahar, a town in Sanaag Region, which like the Sool and Cayn northern regions does not subscribe to the secessionists’ agenda. In that attempt, several people were killed, the “Somaliland” Minister of Defense was sacked for not delivering the Goods, and some NGO’s who were brought from Hargeisa had to flee for their lives. These latest series of unprovoked violence against fellow Somalis stems from a desperate attempt by the secessionists to gain recognition as a separate state; not by peaceful means but by naked military aggressions. This latest aggression by the secessionists on other clans’ territories risks the loss of the peaceful co-existence that had so far prevailed among the northern Somali clans.
