  4. US is biggest giver of Horn of Africa famine aid OBI, Kenya — A U.N. list of countries donating aid money to the Horn of Africa famine shows that the U.S. is by far the biggest donor, having given around $580 million in aid this year. The U.N. says the world community has given $1.1 billion in aid so far, but that $1.3 billion more is needed to help the more than 12 million people in need. At least 30,000 people have already died. Britain is the second-biggest donor at $205 million, followed by Japan and Australia. Saudi Arabia is next at $60 million. It is the biggest donor from the Muslim world. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Thursday announced another $17 million in U.S. funding. She said the drought is a reminder of the need to invest in global agriculture.

  7. Iran's Red Crescent Society (IRCS) is set to send the Islamic Republic's second humanitarian aid shipment to Somalia to help with the relief of famine-stricken people of the African country. The shipment, which will be dispatched later on Thursday, comprises of 40 tons of food and medication, ISNA reported. IRCS's fist aid shipment, which included 60 tons of food and medication, arrived in Somalia's capital of Mogadishu on March 21. The UN has declared famine in five areas in southern Somalia, warning that without urgent intervention, the food crisis could engulf the entire southern part of the country. More than 29,000 children under the age of five have died of hunger over the past three months in southern Somalia, Nancy Lindborg, assistant administrator of the US Agency for International Development said last Thursday. On Sunday, at least 25 more Somali children starved to death in Mogadishu due to the country's worst humanitarian catastrophe in decades. According to UN reports, about 3.7 million people in Somalia are on the brink of starvation and millions more in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda have been affected by the worst drought in the region in 60 years. More than 1.5 million Somalis have been internally displaced by a tug-of-war among the armed factions in the African country, which has been without an effective central government since the overthrow of the country's former dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991. 9. Manama: Wed, 10 Aug 2011 His Majesty King Hamad Bahrain has allocated $3 million on an emergency basis to provide humanitarian aid to famine-stricken Somali people, said a senior official. His Majesty King Hamad issued directives to provide the emergency help to Royal Charity Organisation (RCO) board chairman Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa. RCO secretary-general Dr Mustafa Al Sayed will supervise the relief process. Meanwhile, a day-long campaign on Bahrain TV will tomorrow (August 12) attempt to raise thousands of dinars in aid for Somalia. It is being led by the Information Affairs Authority and will be aired from 2pm to 6pm and 9pm to midnight, said a Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation spokesman. "People from all walks of life in the kingdom will be invited to take part in a marathon discussion, during which callers will be invited to pledge donations in cash or kind," he said. Several leading personalities from the fields of culture, arts, entertainment and sports will be invited to take part along with leading charity workers and others involved in aid-related activities. Documentaries depicting the plight of the Somali people will also be shown, the spokesman said. "The idea is to generate as much as we can for the people of Somalia, who are facing one of the worst humanitarian crises," said the spokesman. "We are confident the people of Bahrain will donate generously during Ramadan, the month of giving. While we are mostly looking at cash donations, those in kind will also be accepted," he added. – TradeArabia News Service
