The same company that brought us The Palm Islands, Al Nakheel Properties (Nakheel Corp), have done it again expanding their portfolio of man-made islands with this latest Dubai island project shaped like the continents of the world. The World will consist of between 250 to 300 smaller private artifical islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet in size, with 50 to 100 metres of water between each island. The development is to cover an area of 9 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by marine transport. Construction has begun on the $US 1.8 billion project which is set to be completed by the end of 2005. It will be located 4 kilometers off the shore of Jumeirah, close to the The Palm Jumeirah, between Burj Al Arab and Port Rashid of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Each island will be sold to selected private developers and are expected to have pricing beginning at Dhs. 25 million (US$ 6.85 million). Source P.S. Watch the Video! (Windows Media Player) Video-Turn on Sound ---- This is so freakin' cool. Classic case of thinking out of the box! I wonder who would buy somalia? The World: The Facts *Located just off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the World involves the creation of 300 man made islands built to represent the world map. The 300 islands will be offered for sale on a freehold basis to selected investors only. *The World is located 4km off shore from a point halfway between Port Rashid and The Palm, Jumeirah. *The development will measure approximately 9km in length and 7km in width. It will cover over 593 million square feet, including more than 200 kms of beach. *The average distance between islands is 50-100 metres, with an average depth of water surrounding each island at 11 - 16 metres. *All 300 islands will only be accessible by marine or air transport, with world-class marinas to berth boats, yachts and cruise liners. Nakheel will integrate a series of waterways, canals and lakes to enhance the overall design. *The islands will be built in the shape of the world map and consist of two protective breakwaters on the outer perimeters to provide shelter from long and cross-shore waves. The outer breakwater will be a submerged reef and the inner breakwater will be above water *Nakheel will hand over the islands to the investors once the land has been reclaimed. All infrastructure and construction will be up to the individual investors who will have the freedom to create their own personal vision on the islands for private or commercial use. *All of the islands will range from 100,000 sq feet to 450,000 sq feet in size, with the average island measuring approximately 300,000 square feet with more than 350 million cubic metres of rock and sand. *The islands range in price from AED 40 million (US$10.8m) to AED 135 million (US $36m) Source

Farxan: Curiosity made the cat very ill. I literally got sick to my stomach when I saw those images. Ya Allah. ---- Although the origin of corsetry is unknown, it is thought to go back since before the ancient Cretans. After their introduction, their use stayed strong until the 20thcentury. (Period Dress). Along with corsetry comes many health risks, and, in extreme cases, death. One health risk includes the weakening of lower back muscles. When the back becomes use to the extra support of the corset and the tight laces, the lower back muscles weaken making them unable to support the spine (Corsets, Gracious Instruments of Torture). Corsets were even used as discipline for kids. Some were used to restrain rowdy girls from horseplay and unladylike behavior. They even had “stay laces†for boys, which stimulated what girls went through (Corsets, Gracious Instruments of Torture). In addition, many other health conditions were involved. “Constriction of the lower chest results in thoracic (upper chest) breathing, the abdominal cavity is decreased, the intestines are compressed, expansion of the upper ribcage compensates for constriction below, the stomach narrows, and gradually relocates, the five lower 'floating' ribs are driven inwards, and sometimes meet, the liver is squeezed so that eventually furrows develop†(Corsets, Gracious Instruments of Torture). Corsets also restrained women from acting like themselves in general. They were physically restrained from being un-lady like and were in a sense confined. Repressing women also tended to lead them to accept their fashion and not question or rebel against it (Corsets, Gracious Instruments of Torture ). Source

OH! I think I get it now. Did you think I was trying to encourage the people to organize protest, or write to the leaders of that particular area, send money---basicaly do something to stop it? Wiilo, I know that you and I are not in a position to do anything about that. If change is going to occur--it has to be within those people. SOme of these practices have been banned by their respective governemnts...but people are very attaached to their traditions and still continue it in secrecy. Alot of people dont know what occurs in other cultures---and I just wanted to open their eyes to it. It makes people appreciate their lives and feel grateful when they see people in oworse situations than them. Anyways Wiilo sis...we have different opinions on this matter--so we should just accept it. You won't change my mind...and it looks like neither will I yours. Salaam

The Native Indians case is a historical one but not taught in schools. J11 & Juba: I dont know about the UK and USA--but here in Canada we learned about that in grade 8 &10 social studies classes. It happened because the native indians were on very rich land for farming and the settlers wanted it. There were conflicts with other bands and they wanted to kill them in a slow and quite manner--without getting their hands dirty, wasting ammunition, getting the other tribes angry, and losing men of their own. >>>The SSNM 200 document is crazy! Although I heard similar ones to it--when South Africa sterilized the black women by the thousands so as not to have a bigger population of blacks who cold threaten the state of apratheid.

^^ I dont give a damn what an adult person does to himself/herself. Thats their choice and I wouldnt waste a second thinking about it. However, when these practices are commited to children (newborn-15 yrs old)--who have absolutely no choice in the matter--->then its serious and I care. These children have no voice, are incredibly vulnerable and it makes me very mad when people do this horrible acts against them. Anyways: What are you trying to say?

^^^Jazakallahu Khayran Sis. That was very helpful. But I wonder why many of the parts are explanations/descriptions rather than one word answers? ex. -spinal cord>>xangulayda laf dhabarta ku dhex jirta P.S. Is there a website that has all this along with pictures? -
Whats so exciting about snow? You guys sound as if you just stepped off the boat from africa! P.S. Maybe you should stick your heads in the fridge--->losts of hardened snow there.

Nomads, is aids/ebola virus really an accidental disease or an intentional agenda to depopulate (racially - as President Thabo Mbeki + Moi believed to be) Third World countries? J11--I know people get hives when they hear about conspiracy theories--but it happened too many times in the past not to question/be suspicious about it in this case Ex. When the Europeans handed out blankets infested with Smallpox to the Native Indains--->that was cultural genoicide. Hundreds of thousands died as a result, and alot of tribes were virtually wiped out. This was in the news a couple of years ago and the trial is still on I believe: Trail in Libya February 7, 2000 Without formal notification of Bulgaria, the court holds a hearing where, according to unofficial information, six Bulgarian citizens are indicted. Later on it emerges that the principal charges against all defendants in the case, including the Bulgarians, are: commission of acts within Libyan territory leading, sooner or later, to the indiscriminate killing of people for the purpose of subversion of the security of the state (a capital offence); involvement in a conspiracy and collusion for the commission of a premeditated crime; causing epidemic by means of injecting 393 children at the Al Fatih Hospital in Benghazi with the AIDS virus (a capital offence); and actions conflicting with the norms and traditions in Libya. The Libyan Arab Jamahiriya has indicted nine Libyan citizens, a Palestinian, and six Bulgarians working and studying as guests in Libya, on numerous charges in relation to an incident of mass HIV infection at Al-Fatah Hospital in Benghazi. Aside from the Libyan indictment, little information is available about this incident. Reportedly almost 400 children were infected, and at least 23 have died. >>>Also they have to test their pills/aids treatment on people, and I assume they would want less restrictions than in America and other developed Nations. There would be policies and regulations in place that would protect the patients from harm and unnecessary testing. But who knows?

I guess it was hard for you to get your point across without name-calling and labelling isnt it? How has being a feminist or whatnot even come into the discussion? What is wrong with you? You have major problems bro---I dont have time for this, nor interest. You are obviously dying for attention-->assalamu aliakum. P.S. young girls/women who are raped in their homes by their spouses, Rape is indeed a horrible, unforgivable act. However, Ive been told that in Islam a husband is not guilty of raping his wife, because she is obliged to please him in the first place. Is that true?

VR and Gediid sitting on a tree K I S S I N G soooooooooo...when are you guys gonna kiss? The suspense is killing.

^^^LOL You mean no more drinking right?

Wiilo sis I think we all know what culture is...and by defining/discussing it, does not make the harmful practices acceptable or any less horrific. Culture is a set of man made rules of conduct and behaviour. It is dynamic and changes with the time....those with power and influence decide what those rules are. VR: LOL! You could become addicted---a druggie--with those irresistable prescription bills. Careful, aight?

At least 130 million women have been forced to undergo female genital cutting . Another2 million are at risk each year from this degrading and dangerous practice. So-called "honour" killings take the lives of thousands of young women every year, mainly in Western Asia, North Africa, the Middle East and parts of South Asia. At least 60 million girls who would otherwise be expected to be alive are "missing" from various populations as a result of sex- selective abortions or neglect . BRIDE-BURNING---DOWRY DEATHS: bride burning in which a bride's in-laws and/or husband set the bride, usually a young bride from the lower class, on fire. The young bride is burned because her family was unable to provide an adequate dowry i.e. the bride's family wasn't able to give enough money and/or consumer goods such as appliances (toasters, microwave). This act of bride burning stems from the Hindu customs of Kanyadan and Varadaicshina. The custom of Kanyadan is where the father presents his daughter with gifts, most often jewelry and clothes, at the time of her marriage. The custom Varadaicshinais is where the father of the bride presents the groom with gifts and/or cash. These offerings of Varadaicshinais and Kanyadan are often called dowry. Daughters in families on these countries are seen as second class to the sons and are to be given away into an arranged marriage at first chance. After the marriage the daughters are now the property of their in-laws. Besides the cultural beliefs, there are also the economic and governmental reasons contributing to the escalating number of bride burnings occurring. The new economic gains in India are bringing about the increased need for more money and modern conveniences and who is being caught in the middle of this need for modern consumerism? The women are. Greed has fastly become the main culprit in bride burnings. The more propersity experienced the more the husbands want in a dowry. If what they want isn't received a case of bride burning is likely to occur. Source

^^Choke on your laughter. Farxan: That was not funny. I will not rise to the bait...but I just cant resist this one! MEN: GET LOST. YOUR PRESENCE IS ANNOYING.

^^^Agree. basically its thier culture to do such ( horrific act ) thing. And how would this arguement supposed to work? To justify these horrendous acts? Yes its culture...I know that...thats what I headed the thread...whats your point? Your not adding anything that I don't know. What I am asking is....so what if its culture? Shyham + Wiilo: I really don't know what this crap about culture is coming from. When an act is set out to hurt/damage a person for unnecessary reasons, physically and/or mentally---it is wrong! Damn culture to hell. Just because it is a cultural act--it should be tolerated? And I guess you guys would agree to female infanticide and the western culture of abortion?  Shyham: What are you trying to prove? That you have no heart? No thought of anyone but yourself? Do you want a medal now? Bro...stop sweating..no one asked you to open your wallet and help these women. The thread was to open people's eyes to the reality of the horrors that culture could bring. P.S. Maybe you don't really care because these acts I have presented are against women. If that's the case---then I would understand.
