  3. Abdi Hajji Hussein - AHN News Correspondent Bosaso, Somalia (AHN) - The semi-autonomous region of Somalia’s Puntland navy captured a Yemeni fishing boat near the coast of Bosaso town, officials said on Thursday. The Yemeni boat was fishing illegally in Puntland’s coastal area, an official from the seaports ministry told the media on condition of anonymity. He added the number of boat crew was 8, declining the details of their nationalities. Reports say the fishing vessel reached at Bosaso harbor last night, where coast guard officials are detaining the boat and its crew. No comment from the government of Yemen was immediately available. Since the fall of Somalia’s military government in 1991, foreign ships have illegaly fished and dumped industrial and nuclear waste off the Somali coast.

  5. US plans to boost ties with breakaway Somali republics to fight radical Islamists By MATTHEW LEE , Associated Press Last update: September 24, 2010 - 12:35 PM NEW YORK - The Obama administration says it will boost ties with two breakaway republics in Somalia to combat a growing threat in the lawless country from Islamist extremists accused of links to al-Qaida. The top U.S. diplomat for Africa, Johnnie Carson, said Friday that American diplomats and aid workers will begin "aggressive" engagement with the self-declared republics of Somaliland and Puntland. It's part of a bid to prevent the spread of radical ideology espoused by the al-Shabab militia in southern Somalia. Carson says the U.S. would not extend formal diplomatic recognition to the two entities but would help their governments with agriculture, health and education projects. He says the U.S. will continue to support Somalia's transitional government.

  12. NAIROBI, (IRIN) - Authorities in Galkayo, in Somalia's self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, are offering internally displaced persons (IDPs) skills training in a bid to integrate them into the community, officials said. The move comes nearly a year after many IDPs and their businesses were targeted by mobs for suspected involvement in explosions in the town. "We host a very large number of displaced people and we want them to integrate with the host community," Bashir Mohamed Mire, the deputy governor, who launched the initiative, said. "This training will equip them with skills to make a living and become part of the community." Mire said that once the IDPs acquired skills, they would not only support themselves but also contribute to the local economy. "Once they are established, they will interact with the people and become part of the community," he said. The training is also expected to reduce criminal activities among the young. "Instead of engaging in illegal or idle activities, like chewing khat, they can learn skills that will be beneficial to them and the community," Mire added. Fleeing the violence In the past 20 years of civil strife in south-central Somalia, thousands of IDPs fleeing the violence have settled in many parts of Puntland. There are more than 40,000 displaced persons in Galkayo, according to the UN. Aden said various agencies were funding the programme. "We have the DRC [Danish Refugee Council], UNESCO [the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization], Save the Children, Diakonia, and EDC [Education Development Centre]. Aden said the training was open to both IDPs and the host community. "Sometimes the difference between the two is marginal. There are locals who are as poor as or even worse off than the IDPs," he said. Muhyadiin Khalif, an IDP from the town of Jowhar, is one of the lucky ones selected for the programme. "I work with a truck that brings stones for buildings. Some days there is no need for stones so I don't get work," he told IRIN. Khalif is now training to be a mechanic. "This will give me a better chance to take care of my family,” said the father of five. "We have been promised tools, so as soon as I complete the course, I want to start my own business." Deputy governor Mire called on other aid agencies to help deal with the growing problem of displacement in the area. "Programmes like this help not only the IDPs but also the locals. It is like teaching someone how to fish instead of giving him fish every day," he said.
  13. Mogadishu (Sunatimes) Mustafa Khalil Abdulahi who is the son of Somaliland's minister of religion and Awqaf has been appointed to be the commander of Abu-Muhsin brigade which belongs to Al-Shabaab militant group and recently completed a military training course in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, official sources told Sunatimes on Tuesday. Khalil 22 age, told his brigade of Al-Shabaab militias that his father had advised him to participate the Islami Jihad in Southern Somalia and then decided to join the insurgency in Mogadishu nine months ago. "I came here to stand by my uncle Ahmed Godane Abu-Zubeyr. I was born in Hargeysa and I am fighting in Mogadishu which I had not seen before. this happened for Allaha's willing and my honesty based on how the Mujahideens would liberate the enemy of Allah out of the country." said Khalil. Somaliland minister of religion and Awqaf Sheik Khalil Abdulahi told Sunatimes.com on the phone that his son Mustafa crossed into southern Somalia but denied he had sent him to join the war in southern Somalia. "My son knew nothing about the religion and I could not convince him to learn it." he added. Most of Somaliland's new government members are Islamic extremists who have close ties with the Al-Qaeda terror group as the minister of the aviation Mohamud Hashi was the man whom the former president Mohamed Ibrahim Igal dubbed him as 'the Osama Bin Laden in horn of Africa'.
