Haji Mohamad Salah Deyr has been buried in Bosaso. He was a leading and one of the last well known personalities of the Somali Youth League which strived and succeed in gaining Indepedence for Somalia and became the first ruling party of the country that united Somalia and made a sovereign nation state.

Somalia: Somali revolutionist passes away in Bossaso 13 Feb 13, 2013 BOSSASO, Somalia Feb 13 2013 (Garowe Online) – A revolutionist by the name Mohamed Salah Deer (Ladane) who was part of the Somali Youth League (SYL) - who were fundamental in fighting for the independence of Somalia during colonial rule - died in Bossaso on Wednesday, Garowe Online reports. Ladane who was born after the First World War was one of the last remaining well known SYL revolutionists. Ladane was not part of the original 13 members of SYL which was originally named Somali Youth Club and was the first Somali political party established. However he was a very focal part of the youth political party established in 1943 that gained Somalia’s independence in 1960. During the movement Ladane traveled around Somalia gaining supporters for the SYL movement and played a role in founding the youth movement during the 40s. Ladane ran for Somali parliament in 1964 but was unsuccessful in his bid. He then ran for parliament again in 1969 in which he was successful. For quite some time Ladane was ill and was in and out of hospital however family and friends say that he was all was in good spirits. According to his friends he would constantly be reminding those around him that the fight SYL began in the 40s still needs to be pursued. In a statement to press, Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole, said that he was deeply saddened that a revolutionist figure had passed and that it was a sad day for Somalis at home and abroad. “I am sending my condolences to the family and friends of Ladane, Somalia has lost a great man who fought for his land and people that he loved so much. Somalia: Puntland political associations opening regional offices, recruiting supporters 28 Jan 28, 2013 GAROWE, Somalia Jan. 28, 2013 (Garowe Online) - The six registered political associations in Somalia’s northern autonomous Puntland region are opening up regional offices and actively recruiting supporters, in preparation for local elections in mid-2013, Garowe Online reports. On Dec. 31, 2012, the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC) declared that six political associations are qualified under the first phase of registration process. However, TPEC requires the six registered political associations to qualify under a second phase of the registration process, which includes opening regional offices and bringing the verified signatures of at least 1,500 supporters across Puntland’s eight administrative regions. Political associations, such as the government’s Horseed political association, and legitimate opposition groups such as Midnimo and Wadajir political associations, have opened up offices in Garowe, Bossaso, Galkayo, and Badhan town in Sanaag region so far, local sources say. Puntland Cabinet ministers have also arrived in Galkayo, Badhan and Dhahar towns to open Horseed political association’s regional offices, and other political associations are taking similar steps ahead of a Feb. 10th deadline imposed by TPEC to complete the second phase of registration. Moreover, the competing political associations have been engaging in regular meetings with civil society groups, conducting fundraising activities, and recruiting supporters. TPEC officials say that the political associations that qualify during the second phase of registration will compete in local elections and that the three political associations with most votes in local elections results will become the state’s three official political parties, in accordance with the Puntland constitution. Since its formation in 1998, Puntland has aspired to open up its political system and establish multiparty elections. President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole has pledged to advance Puntland towards multiparty elections and the region is currently bustling with political activity, with various political associations competing for support. Somalia: After Bossaso trip, Puntland president returns to Garowe 27 Jan 27, 2013 GAROWE, Somalia Jan. 27, 2013 (Garowe Online) - The president of Somalia’s Puntland government Abdirahman Mohamed Farole returned to the capital Garowe on Sunday, after spending over two months in Karkar and Bari regions, Garowe Online reports. The president’s motorcade arrived in Garowe around 7pm local time and was welcomed by Puntland Vice President Gen. Abdisamad Ali Shire, Cabinet ministers and parliamentarians, among others. President Farole did not address the media and the delegation was ushered to the State House in Garowe. Trip to Bossaso President Farole and a government delegation left Garowe on Nov. 23, 2012, and headed to the port city of Bossaso. The president spent a week in Qardo, capital of Karkar region, where he held meetings with local officials, community elders, and representatives from different districts. The president also officially opened the new prison in Qardo. In Bossaso, President Farole met with members of the business community and expressed the government’s commitment to completing Bossaso International Airport. On Jan. 8, the president revealed that the airport’s tarmac runway would be built with a donation from Italy and contribution from the government and private sector in Puntland, in a public-private partnership. While in Bossaso, President Farole also frequented meetings with community elders and prominent citizens, addressed university students, received foreign delegations, and traveled to Djibouti and back. Puntland officials tell Garowe Online that President Farole met with Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Ghelle while in Djibouti, as well as U.S. and Ethiopian senior officials. U.S. Special Representative to Somalia Amb. James Swan visited President Farole in Bossaso on Jan. 10, 2013, with the officials discussing security issues, humanitarian programs, and the democratization process in Puntland. Democratization process in Puntland President Farole says he is leading Puntland towards multiparty political system. On April 18, 2012, the Puntland constitution was adopted at by a constituent assembly and supported Puntland's titled elders. Between Sept. 11 and Dec. 31, 2012, six political associations were legally registered with the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission (TPEC). In May 2013, the political associations are expected to compete the multiparty local elections to be held in Puntland since the state’s formation in 1998.
