  1. well wlc back I myself have been away from this site for a while but as u can tell from the numba of posts, i dont think many would have noticed lol Well i read your post and i couldnt DISAGREE more the united nations is NOT irrelevant sure it has suffered alot from Bush's unilateral approach to the war in Iraq at the end of the day Bush still needed to have a "coalition of the willing" to have some sort of legitimacy. The United Nations is the only international institution with enough clout to respond to interntional problems. Even Bush is know crawlin back askin for help. I really dont see how European leaders could be regarded as hypocrites when all their doin is attemptin to counter US primacy by legitmatly callin for a greater role for the United Nations. Im actually hoping China can hurry up and become that Superpower that its predicted to be at least that way we wont be completely screwed.
  2. Did any of you watch that program on BBC about Muslim women who choose to wear Hijab, I thought it was a really good program. It makes me curious about other experiences of women with Hijab. So tell us your stories. Have people been overwhelmingly negative or positive about it. Im hoping none of the sistahz were also regarded as a security threat like that one girl on the show
  3. hmmm very interesting.. so it appears all those who said music is harmful for you were correct after all. I alwayz knew there was something sinister about Matchbox 20.
  4. Raami i cant get in its askin me to log in Was this the reason 4 the cheesy grin? Thanks Rahima, well im new to these movies and stuff but if they are anythin like the old taped Riywaadz from 1960 then i fear i will only understand the plot through dissecting the body language and music.. My somali is very weak.
  5. Ummm i think its obvious that she is not a muslim i mean this woman left the somali country side 11 years ago, probably had no education especially bout Islam and now is more right wing then the whites thats completly stuffed. But i dont think she deserves to die, thats just to extreme. It will only fuel the sterotypes about Islam being a mysoginistic, violent religion. In the end of the day this Ayan Hirsi is the real loser she cant live a day without threats thats punishment enough.
  6. Something dont seem right about this list i mean whats Oxford and Cambridge doin behind MIT and why the hell is Stanford and Yale all the way at the bottom?? I might not be correct but from what ive heard uni rankings are all based on how much money is spent on research and so Harvard spends the most on it. Either way i think saying u graduated from Oxford or Cambridge sounds a little more prestigious then saying MIT or CIT or whateva was up there. But then again im only from Australia so i have no idea how big MIT is.. The only time i eva heard of that place was in college basketball games. Which reminds me where the hell is Duke Uni?
  7. I have yet to see any of these movies. We somalis in Australia are obviously missin out.
  8. Thanks for that post. The way i see it the benefits will begin after we have get more somalis in the workforce. Untill then we can only plan how we can each contribute to our communities, not only in the west, but more importantly for our communities in Somalia. like they say education is the key to success.
  9. If u look at statistics it clearly suggests that men are worst drivers i mean they are involved in a substantially higher amount of accidents. I think that speaks for itself
  10. Why is it that in some movies people who have never met before start singing the same song and have perfectly choreographed dance scene. I mean how true to life is that?
  11. No it is not inferior by any way. I love everything about our culture, the food (yum!!) the manners, the importance of family, our music, the beautful poetry and literature and i love my diric. I guess what happens in the West is just a simple case of migrants attempting to fit into the dominant culture, it happened with the Italians, Chinese( how many asians have you met with Anglo names like Sarah Chang or William Choo, etc etc..even those who cant speak english!!) but at the end of the day inshallah Somalis will truly realise how lucky we really are and give our roots the respect and appreciation it deserves. Which makes me think maybe what is trully missing is an all round education of what it is to be Somali, what average young somali knows they various types of poems that exist, how many know the various types of traditional dances, major historical events, etc etc, i mean with the hip hop dominated culture today and with the popularity of freestyle battles would many somalis realise that a traditional pastime of young somalis was the composition of full blown poems tottaly alliterated in Poetry 'freestyle'battles my answer would be No and i guess until such time when the average somali in the west could answer yes to such questions i dont see this situation of downplaying our heritage to disapear any time soon.
  12. I dont hate ethiopians infact ive come across many nice ethiopians just like any other ethnic group, but what i do have a very big problem is the Ethiopian Government their policies and certain historical events. It is the Ethiopian Government who secretly dispossed the somali people of their land by playing up the fact that they were "christians in a sea of muslims", It was the Ethiopian Government who continues to meddle with the affairs of the somali people, they support the break up of Somalia heard of the phrase divide and rule? It was also this Government who is taking advantage of the so called war on terror in order to target somalis who rightfully are protecting what is OUR homeland. This Government employs the tactics of the isreali Government by attempting dilute the population of somalis by encouraging settlements, this Government attempted to wipe out the identity of somalis in the Haud-******ia region by wiping out the somali language. Remember Haile Selaisse had the deluded belief that Somalis WERE Ethiopians and that even the city of Mogadishu rightfully belonged to them.It was also this Government who has murdered fellow somalis by blocking essential food aid during the great famines in the Haud-******ia region, and allowing AIDS infected prostitutes into somali occupied areas of Djibouti and various places throughout somalia.   But i should be fair and say that the Ethiopian Government is hated by many "Ethiopians" themselves, Oromos have been treated like crap for years Now that ive blown of a little steam back to the situation you have discribed this is something that should not happen somalis as muslims should treat fellow muslims with the respect they deserve no true muslim would act in this manner. I certainly would not and neither would all the somalis i know.
  13. Okay since Zu is actin like the typical lazy aussie bloke. Ill answer your questions first of all most somalis without a doubt are concentrated in the city of Melbourne which also has the largest population of Eritreans and Ethiopians, Sydney also has a fairly reasonably sized community less then Melb which is why i find what Darman says about his sister not seeing a somali in 8 months very hard to believe  somalis are also found in Adelaide and Brisbane but this would be a very small amount, and also in the city of Perth which is recieving increased numbers of somalis from Melbourne and Sydney, so who knows Perth may one day be the Somali capital of Australia. How are somalis doing education wise, from what i have seen somalis are doing fairly well, ofcourse u have those who would rather not study at all but somalis are found in all unis even if it is a sole student, i have heard of a few students in Medicine and Law so i guess education wise things are looking better and better. Employment wise Aus is a place where if u really want a job u can get one, im not really sure how well somalis fair in unemployment though, never really occured to me that there may or may not be an unemployment problem, don't forget there is an unlimited oppurtunities for faraaxs to get into the taxi service. Discrimination wise, somalis are in no way treated like Aboriginals in Australia ofcourse society has its racists for somalis the biggest issue would probably be discrimination due to our religion, despite what i have said Australians are very open minded people so discrimination is few and far between. I guess it is because race has not become such a central issue as it has in the US and UK i assume. Oh mind you recently in the city of Perth there has been some violent encounters between somalis and Aboriginals so somalis are quite wary of the Aboriginals themselves who believe me you dont want to mess with. All in All Australia is fairly cool place to be unless your an aslyum seeker that is. hope ive answered your questions feel free to ask more
  14. For question 1 my anwswer would be no. For Question 2. Best case scenario none of these candidates but since your asking from these three i would pick 3 This candidate sounds alot like wesley clark doesnt he??
  15. Yup, Education is very important. After all in one of the Hadiths of the prophet(saw)It states that the search of knowledge is compulsory for every female and male. That and also the fact that Education will probably be the only way i will be of use in helping rebuild our homeland. and my only source of dough so Education rocks!
  16. I believe it was Ramses II in power during the time of Musa (as).Wasnt there also a verse in the Quran that also described how this King would be preserved as an example for future generations. And suprise suprise which King is perfectly preserved and on display in an Egyptian museum none other then Ramses the second himself. But ofcourse i may be wrong.
  17. Its up and running at the moment so check it out.
  18. yeah i was one of the many that checked it out great people, fun chat, well afta the intitial problem of othas trying to figure out who i was  But hey no biggie, I highly reccomemend it thanks to Sue for settin it up
  19. Well hey this paltalk room is a good idea and OG-Girl it was nice talkin to you
  20. Yeah i forgot to also place the blame on Somalias economy on the corrupt regime of the day.
  21. True debt relief will be useless if Good Governance does not exist in a country. The United Nations Development Program clearly stated that Good Governance is the key to achieving sustainable development in a country. These include characteristics such as the prescence of the rule of law, equality, accountability and so forth Someting poorly lacking in many African countries. But despite what ive just said Im all for debt relief in Africa. The IMF and World Bank are two organisations i have lost confidence in these organisations have just ensured Africa has remained economically enslaved to the West. It was also these organisations that pretty much helped to destroy the somali economy. When the somali currency was doing well on the world market( i think sometime in the 80's) they insisted the Government take several measures that they said would have helped the economy and currency further but all it did was result in the currency deflating out of control now the currency aint even worth the paper its printed on.
  22. Its been quite a while since i have been at this site, not that anyone has noticed since i dont usually bother with posts. But after spending some time at other somali sites . I realised there is no place that rivals SOL. The quality of posts, the manners, the interesting personalities, and abundance of intelligence and culturally aware young somalis is what makes this site great. Something severely lacking in the others(you all know which sites im refering to. So to everyone at SOL the sophists, the Khayrs, the Latifas, the Luckys, the darmans,.... the list really could go on forever keep doing what u do. And to the moderators well done for ensuring this site is not hijacked by an anti-social minority.
