  1. Ugandan troops to pacify Somalia Friday, 16 February, 2007, 10:50 AM Doha Time KAMPALA: The 1,500 Ugandan peacekeepers pledged to the African Union force for Somalia will be deployed solely in the country’s lawless capital Mogadishu, the peacekeeping mission said yesterday. The Ugandan force could go in as early as this weekend, and would secure Mogadishu while the AU awaits troops from other countries to arrive in other Somali cities, Paddy Ankunda, spokesman for the AU mission, said. Some 8,000 troops are expected in total. Uganda’s parliament voted on Tuesday to send troops to Somalia under an AU plan to pacify a nation rocked by unrelenting attacks by insurgents against the interim government. It is the first country to do so. “We can’t deploy all over Somalia. We’ll be in Mogadishu. 1,500 people is adequate (to secure Mogadishu),”Ankunda said. International pressure has grown for peacekeepers to deploy quickly to prevent the chaotic Horn of Africa country sliding back into anarchy after Ethiopian forces helped the transitional government oust Islamists in a December war. The Islamists had restored a degree of order to Mogadishu, which had been ruled by warlords since the overthrow of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre’s regime in 1991. But the US and Ethiopia accused them of harbouring Al Qaeda operatives. Nigeria, Burundi, Ghana and Malawi have also pledged troops, but it is unclear when they would mobilise them. “The other forces would have to take control of other main towns - Kismayu, Baidoa, Jowhar, Marka,” Ankunda said. “The African Union must compel (the others) to send forces.” But he added that the Ugandan troops were able to hold the fort by themselves until reinforcements arrive, because they had the necessary training and equipment, including knowledge of basic Somali language and culture. “We’ll move there first because we can stand on our own,” he said, adding that a Ugandan officer, Major-General Levi Karuhanga, had been appointed to head the mission. Meanwhile in Baidoa, where the interim government still has its main base while awaiting for security to improve in Mogadishu, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin met government leaders. He arrived late on Tuesday. -Reuters

  3. Garaad, I would only have to list two (extremely obvious) points as to why anyone would oppose the TFG. 1. They Invited Ethiopian forces into the country. Forces that we hear are committing crimes against the people on behalf of a 'government' which alleges to represent them. Yes i can imagine how this might work. Puppet Government : Citizens we know what you want and we shall give it to you. Citizens : And what is it that we want? Puppet Government : Why death ofcourse, and lots of it! Our intelligence also leads us to believe that many of you are anxious about missing out on your fair share of misery and hopelessness, *sighs* yes my people, We are your humble servants and your wish is our command. *smiling* Citizens : *Exchange worried looks* 2. The TFG's immoral and disgusting support for American bombing raids that killed many innocent people. And the conclusion? Alleging someone opposes the TFG for simply Qabiilist reasons, just won't cut it.

  8. This is sad. To think so many families left Somalia to avoid violence only to have to deal with other forms of violence in their countries of refuge. I really do hope much more is done to tackle these youth issues.

  15. ^I usually choose to ignore V'Day all together. This has served me well so far. V day is one of your opportunities to share your friend's hapiness and love Thankfully my friends are above such madness.
  16. JB not desperate. I just find V Day to be one of the most irritating of the year.
  17. To hell with Valentines day. Its a scourge on the planet I say.
  18. ^LOOOL, Actually your wrong there. Quite alot of people sent to Australia were poor folks (e.g. the Irish) that committed no crime greater then stealing a loaf of bread. In anycase the majority of White Australians don't trace their ancestory to convicts but to settlors who came afterwards. But those who do consider it a source of great pride. I have met quite a few who have told me of their convict connections.
  19. John Howard is a racist I doubt he would have bothered commenting on any white candidate who would have said the same thing. Seems like he has diverted from the usual custom of not explicity commenting on presidential candidates.
