What makes you think that I need a lesson in black history? And from you of all ppl  Yeah, slavery, colonialism etc-- was evil - it was racism and you can't combate racism with racism - get me? And fyi.. That is Afro American history- I sympathies but I happen to have my own miserable history to contend with. Besides, these letter weren't about slavery / colonialism but two ppl who were trying to validate their very existance at the expense of the 'other' race- It is only an indication of deep rooted racism, insecurity and the need to be accpeted by the other - sad! Ameenah! be hones! any lil jungle-fever involved there!!!lol... come on dont shy sista! I'll be honest - I think you are in dire need of maturing  Thanks North.....

A whole loada racist bla, bla! I agree with Lakkad.. we are Muslims and Muslims come in all colours and cultures ...BUT we have the same values and principles. Whereas, the only thing we share with Afro-Americans (non Muslims) is colour. I remember when I was at school - one of our frainds (a white brother) converted to Islam. He went to library to get books on Islam and read one by the Nation of Islam thinking they were muslims. Anyways the next day he brought the book for us to look at - expecting us as mulims to be shocked and offended about the nations views of white ppl - but instead some of the Somalis started to defend it. I still remember the look of hurt in his face - when we read these articles we have to move away from our own biases (in this case being black-makes us side with the dude) and see it for what it really is - racism and ignorance from both parties - Islaam condemns both arguements.

Salaams ya'll *gives Bee a cuppah* Khayr walaal, I understand where your going with making Islaam a priority. However, I must say that your research skills are somewhat dificient. Why? Because, you asked the people to choose between 4 specifics and to put them in order of importance. The sisters, kindly obliged and did as you requseted. Than, you came back and made an analyses or rather a critique of their responses using a 5th factor. Had you designed your survey differently and asked us - how important islam was to us, or added it to the list as an option. I think you' get a different response. I don't know wether this is a short sight on your part or a deliberate attempt to put the sisters off seeking education (I note that the brothers were spared this lecture). Whatever your intention.. as I'm not too concerened with your personal perception of the ill-effects of 'secular education' or the education of women. I think you could have been a little more open minded with your analyses. Who is to say that a person that makes plans regards to their career and education is putting Islaam on hold? Why can't we be good muslims, that are educated and active in society? Yes, Islaam should be our first priority - we should work 4 the aakhira... but we can't neglect the dunya. If one must state the obvious, there is no denying that education of the Muslims both Islamicaly and otherwise is the key to our advancement. Individually and as an ummah. Like people have already said, education, work and family life do not get in the way of practising Islam. It can actually be a form of cibaadah. Furthermore, if we make our intention pure and make contributions to the ummah using the skills gained from education - we will be rewarded for it. Underdog, Your calculation is 10 years off the mark. The average garduate is 22-23. It would take max 2 years to get into a career (if the person takes up postgarduate studies). So by 24-25 you'd be set up. Besides, who is to say you cant be married and have a life outside the four walls - And fyi- when some1 gets married is dependent on a force greater than choice. There is nothing wrong with getting married at 30 / 40. If it dosn't appeal to you - thats you! Honestly, the some men of this forum are so rigid - expand your thoughts a little walaalyaal

Great article. Man Sha Allah. I think its safe to say that many women muslims and nonmuslims alike are waking up and discovering the liberating characteristic of Islaam

In Sha Allah khair, I personaly belive that there is wisedom behind Allah's decree. So even if the situation in Somalia looks bad on the surface, it is in a much better position today than it was under the colonial and dictatorial rule. And considering the views presidential candidates that we have - I think we'r better of as we are 4 now. Contrary to public opinion there is a steady level of development in Somalia.. and HIV isn't only a crises in Somalia but also in more developed nations in Africa - it is not a case of having a government but resources. I don't want to get too into it... but I'm very hopeful that Somalia and many Muslim countries will be victorious in the end .... we just need to have faith in Allah and follow his commands ...

My Question is Where is Allaah? Plz becareful answer only with evidence. Okay, I know the answer but the evidence is not so available. Allah, is above His 'Kursi', which is above his 'carsh', which is above the seven heavens. Allah is everywhere in his knowledge but not physically. The Proof of this is in a hadith of the Prophet (saw) which involved a slave girl... She has upset her master and was brought before the Prophet (saw), who asked her where her creator was and she pointed to the sky - the Prophet than ordered that she be freed because she was a beliver who knew her 'rab'. Sorry if this isn't the correct wording - (I think it is realted by Bukhari). *Will look it up and edit next i'a* more proof: 255 Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber, nor sleep overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter . And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. [This Verse 2:255 is called Ayat-ul-Kursi.] Bilaal Philips Book of Tawheed also has a Chapter on this My Q : Define shirk /B]

Originally posted by Rahima: quote:***I hope nomads sisters go back and do the same for our sisters back in Somalia! Ameenah, i think for us Somalis it would be the other way around. I understand where you’re coming from and agree totally. I was looking at it from a technical angle; it would be great if we had Islamic education delivered in Universities and hence create opportunities for Islamicaly qualified female scholars to emerge… my thoughts were along those lines. But I realise the ambitious nature, as it is almost impossible in Somalias current climate. But when it comes to aqeedah and the implementation of Islaam - waa la ina dhaamaa. The sisters back home have got it going on in that department.. man sha Allah. -

This debate (women, careers and education) has already been exhausted numerous time b4. *But anyway * My priorities are as follows: At the moment: Learn my deen – area I’ve neglected due to studies Develop my career Near future: Relocate to Somalia / Muslim country Get married if I meet a brother worth marrying (who says you can’t do both?) Children

^^^ Yeah, but you make sound like a person is putting away their list of wants because they have no choice but settle for less. I personaly think that those lists serve as a guideline and help you creat boundries for yourself. For example, I would never settle with a non-muslim - which is always on tope of my list - so I wouldn't entertain the notion of acquainting a non-muslim. I mean there are the fundamentals (which are unnagotioable) and other qualities which would be nice but not absolute. Intrestingly enough, people have ideas about good looking etc... but in teh end you get attracted to the person as whole - and not the different parts of them. N-STar lol. good luck- actually your list isnt that unrealistic! But you can be asking 4 trouble when looking 4 a 'funny, beautiful cook' - not enough for good mother and wife in my opinion. But Good Luck

Agreed walaal. You require a mahram when travelling abroad not when your going to work / local store. Also, in Canada and the UK they have specialist transport services for women who travel at night. This is in response to rise in the number of rapes and attackes on women - is this 'a buncha crock'?

^^ lol .. sweet! I think Conspiracy sort of shed some light into the whole affair. We all have our lists and requirements .. but when you meet the one ... that list won't even matter anymore...

This poem is so cool.... I think its time for a positive post - since its eid and all You will recognise your brothers By the way they act and move Throughout the world There will be a strange force about them There will be unspoken answers in them This will be obvious not only to you but to many The confidence they have in themselves and in their people will be evident in their quite saneness The way they relate to women will be clean, complimentary, responsible with honesty and as partners The way they relate with children will be strong and soft, full of positive direction and as example The way they relate to men will be that of questioning our position in this world will be one of planning for movement and change will be one of working for their people will be one of gaining and maintaining trust within culture These men at first will seem strange and unusual but this will not be the case for long they will train others and the discipline they display will be a way of life for many they know that this is difficult But this is the life that they have chosen for themselves, for us, for life: they will be the examples they will be the answers they will be the first line builders they will be the creators they will be the first to give up the weakening pleasures they will be the first to share love resources and vision they will be the workers they will be the scholars they will be the providers they will be the historians they will be the coaches they will be the doctors lawyers, farmers, clergy and all that is needed for development and growth You will recognise these brothers and they will not betray you By… Haki R.
