  4. while tfg is busy opening cash kiishs loaths!! Local insurgents tonight attacked two police stations in the Somalia capital Mogadishu with bombs and automatic machineguns – as the city is under curfew for the fifth day. Residents told Somalinet that the police stations in Huriwa and Dharkenley districts in north and west of the capital were attacked as explosions and exchange of gunfire could be heard there. There is no immediate casualty from the latest ambush attacks. The first attack was launched on Dharkenley district around 8:10pm local time where the insurgents used hand grenade bombs. Minutes after, the second attack took place as local militants ambushed the police station in Huriwa district. Meanwhile, just in reports say that the security forces killed a local militant who this evening who hurled a grenade bomb at a government convoy passing near Bakara market wounding three soldiers. The police forces shot him dead as he was trying to escape, according to a local resident in condition of anonymity. Earlier, the Young Islamic Movement (YIM) said in statement posted on the Internet that they were responsible for the attacks on the government positions and its allied Ethiopian forces.

  14. Know your Prime Minister (Ali M. Ghedi) July 1st, 2007 Sophia Tesfamariam Meles Zenawi’s war of aggression against the people of Somalia was not a surprise to folks like me who have been watching the developments in Somalia since June 2006 when the Union of Islamic Courts took over Mogadishu and restored peace in Somalia after 15 years of anarchy and chaos. It was obvious that the US State Department was not happy with the developments in the Horn and turned once again to its trusted ally and mercenary Meles Zenawi to help return Somalia to its chaotic past. Using the Security Council as its bully pulpit, the US got its proxy war in Somalia. That is another topic for another day, my interest today is Ali Mohammed Ghedi, the illusive Prime Minister of the Transitional National Government of Somalia. Very little is divulged about this man in the US led western media…I wonder why. He got my attention when he openly vouched for the deceptive street smart Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia, and called for the invasion of Somalia. During a 5 December 2006 Press Conference in Addis Ababa, he justified Meles Zenawi’s unprovoked war of aggression against Somalia by saying: “…Terrorism is a global issue. But, the so-called UIC with their allies in Mogadishu clearly targeted the country and people of Ethiopia . Therefore, it is the duty of the government of Ethiopia to protect the interests of its people and country. That cannot be compromised. That is our decision…” What about the interests of the long suffering people of Somalia? I wondered how a leader of country, whose people have experienced untold suffering for 15 years, could openly call for war against them, and prolong their suffering. I was also surprised at his reluctance to create a more conducive environment for Somali reconciliation and dialogue. When the entire world knows that it is Meles Zenawi’s armed forces that were in Somalia, Ali Mohammad Ghedi harped about unnamed “foreign fighters” and “Eritrean forces” in order to cover up for his masters at Menelik Palace and divert attention from Meles Zenawi’s criminal acts in Somalia. He refers to the Somalis who are fighting to defend Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as “Islamic terrorists”. Today, he is applauding the US backed Meles Zenawi invasion of Somalia, which has cost the lives of thousands of innocent Somalis, caused untold destruction to vital Somali infrastructure including its airports. Who is Ali Mohammad Ghedi and whose interests and agendas is he promoting? If you rely on the spin being repeated over and over again in the US led western media, you will not get much. It is as if they are bending over backwards to create a clean slate for the man. Whilst so many genuine African leaders who have stood beside their people have been unnecessarily maligned and vilified by the Western media and their coteries, Ghedi, who has betrayed the people of Somalia over and over again, is getting a makeover. Here is the often repeated phrase about Ghedi: “…He has not been involved with the factional fighting of the past 13 years…a qualified vet, Mr Ghedi is relatively unknown in political circles, and was only sworn in as a member of Somalia’s parliament-in-exile hours before his appointment, after a Mogadishu warlord gave up his seat for him…” I suppose that means he is being cleared of any wrong doing, or responsibility for the anarchy and chaos that has plagued Somalia for the last 13 years. How does a “relatively unknown in political circles” get a seat in Somalia’s parliament? Who is the Mogadishu warlord that “gave up his seat” for Ghedi? Why did he do that? Obviously, no one is telling, for good reasons. Here is an excerpt from a 5 November 2004 IOL article under the title “So who is Ali Mohamed Gedi”: “…Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed plucked the former lecturer in livestock at the University of Mogadishu from the African Union and assigned him the responsibility of forming the first recognised government in 14 years…Friends describe Gedi as a soft-spoken leader with a humble personality and one without political skeletons in his cupboard, a characteristic of several armed leaders, including Abdullahi Yusuf…All the warlords, except Mohamed Omar Habeb, who controls the Middle Shabelle and Mogadishu faction leader Bashir Raghe, have yet to throw their weight behind the new premier…” Neither the Transitional National Government of Somalia, nor Ghedi enjoys popular support in Somalia. As for Mohamed Omar Habeb, he is after all Ghedi’s relative with a vested interest in the TNG, as we will see later when we unravel Ghedi’s true identity and provide a more complete dossier on the man behind Meles Zenawi’s unprovoked war of aggression against the people of Somalia. As for Abdullahi Yusuf, his reign will soon be over, if Ghedi and Meles have their way. Background Ali Mohammad Ghedi was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1951. After his mother’s divorce, his step mother Hewa R. raised the young Ghedi. His father was a Colonel in the Somali National Security Service (NSS). Ghedi was recruited by the NSS while he was in secondary school and worked for them throughout his college days. He also completed military service training in the 70s. Ghedi was given the task of spying on his fellow secondary and university students. During the Barre regime hundreds of students were arrested and tortured “on the basis of reports given by Ghedi”. After completing secondary school at Jamal Abdul Masic Allah in Mogadishu in 1974, he went to veterinary school at the University of Mogadishu and graduated in 1978. From 1979-1981 he was in Italy at the University of Pisa on a two-year scholarship. He returned to the University of Mogadishu’s Veterinary School and served as assistant lecturer in 1982. He was soon appointed as its Head, and held that post until the collapse of Siad Barre’s regime in 1991. The fall of Siad Barre’s regime brought the era of the warlords. Ali Mahdi Mohammed is one of the two main warlords to have emerged after the fall of Siad Barre; Mohammed Farah Aideed was the other. Ghedi worked with Ali Mahdi as head of the logistical section. The power struggle between Aideed and Mahdi in 1991-1992 was one of the deadly turning points in Somalia’s history. During that time Ghedi was working as Assistant Defense Secretary with Ali Mahdi. That civil war cost the lives of 50,000 Somalis of which Ghedi is accountable. Link with Meles Zenawi In the mid 80s, Professor Ghedi’s father was assigned to assist Meles Zenawi, the then head of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), to provide for Meles’ basic needs. Eventually he was appointed as the coordinator between the Somali government and TPLF. The assistance given to Meles Zenawi was facilitated by Ghedi’s father. It was during this time that Ghedi’s relationship with Meles Zenawi flourished. Trail of Betrayal After the failure of UNOSOM operations in March 1995, Ghedi’s father made a courtesy call to his former friend Meles Zenawi. Colonel Mohammed, Ghedi’s father requested political support and assistance to elevate his son, to play more prominent and key roles in Somali politics. It was after Colonel Mohammed’s visit to Addis Abeba that Ghedi began to distance himself from Ali Mahdi and his organization and began to openly challenge him. This began Ghedi’s trail of betrayals of the Somali people in general, but also of the people that assisted him in his rise as a prominent figure in Somali politics. When civil war broke out in Somalia, Ghedi remained in exile, mostly in Ethiopia and Kenya. He served as consultant in various regional livestock bodies in East Africa. From 2003-2004 Ghedi worked for the Red Sea Livestock Trade Commission (LTC). The RSLTC is a USAID funded autonomous body operating under the African Union’s Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), making Ghedi a USAID employee. A luxury hotel in Nairobi, Kenya served both as his office and residence. According to news reports: “…From Nairobi he also oversaw an internationally funded animal disease control programme for Somalia…” The truth is that he used his profession and his position to undermine the thriving Somali livestock export market in order to help his godfather and mentor Meles Zenawi. In 1996 a USAID funded livestock export project which was given to Ethiopia, instead of Somalia based upon Ghedi’s recommendations. None of the media reported that Ghedi was singularly responsible for the ban on export of Somali livestock. When Ghedi was working with the Italian NGO Terra Nuova, he issued a certificate saying that Somali livestock was infected with Rift Valley fever, resulting in the ban on Somali’s livestock by the Gulf States, costing Somalia millions in export revenues. This erroneous claim was repeatedly denied by international organizations and Somali herdsman. This opened up a short lived opportunity for Ethiopian livestock to monopolize the livestock market in the Gulf States and other Arab countries. After 14 trials to form a Transitional Government for Somalia failed due to Ethiopia’s interference, the current Transitional National Government was formed in 2004 in Kenya with Abdulahi Yusuf as its head. Following Meles Zenawi’s orders, Yusuf chose Ghedi as the Prime Minister. He faced problems because Ghedi was not a member of the Transitional Federal Parliament (TFP) and a request for a Constitutional amendment to allow non-members to serve in the Somalia government was rejected. Mohamed Omar Habeb “Muhammad Dheere” the Jowhar based faction leader is Ghedi’s relative and a Meles loyalist. He was an elected member of the TFP but stepped down in favor of Ghedi, allowing Yusuf to name him Prime Minister. In the mid 90s, Ghedi’s relationship with the minority Tigrayan regime in Ethiopia tightened and he was subsequently recruited as the regime’s spy. He was paid a monthly salary for his contributions of confidential intelligence to Meles’ regime. Ghedi continues to put the interests of the minority regime in Ethiopia ahead of that of the Somali people and has worked aggressively to scuttle any peace talks, calling instead for the invasion of Somalia by his godfather’s forces. The US led international community has emboldened Meles Zenawi, the mercenary leader of the Tigrayan minority regime in Ethiopia, to defy international law, invade sovereign territories of neighboring countries, trample and violate the human rights of the Ethiopian people. They have once again proved that when it comes to Africa, African lives are dispensable, and the end justifies the means. The real question is to what end… Therefore, the reports about Ghedi being a political novice, having no skeletons in his closet etc. etc. are not only erroneous and self serving, but they are also a futile attempt by his handlers to clean up his corrupt and traitorous history against the people of Somalia. His acts of treason will continue to be exposed and history and the Somali people will judge him harshly…there is no where to hide. He will have to answer to the Somali people sooner or later. Finally, Meles Zenawi and Jendayi Frazier can use force and install Ghedi’s puppet regime in Mogadishu, but they cannot force the people of Somalia to accept him as their leader. The US led international community may have shattered the hopes and aspirations of the Somali people temporarily, but no amount of fire power can kill the spirit of a people fighting for justice forever. The rule of law will prevail over the law of the jungle source:http://free-somalia.org/?p=104#comment-6

  18. The Occupation of Somalia by Ethiopia is The Only Way the Thuggish Warlords Can Stay in Power! On July 16, 2006, a day after the opening and an abrupt closing of the sham clanizing session hosted by criminal warlords of TGF and Tigre regime of Meles Zinawi and financed by the Bush/Cheney neocon regime of the US, the “smooth talking” warlord-cum prime minister and a trained veterinarian, Ali Mohamed Gedi made an absurd, nonetheless, revealing statement that there is no legal basis which can prevent Ethiopia’s army currently occupying Somalia becoming part of any new AU “peacekeeping force in Somalia. [1] This is false for the occupation army of Meles Zinawi cannot be re-branded as “peacekeepers” in Somalia. Zinawi’s Tigre army is in Somalia as an occupation force and cannot be a force for peace . Gedi’s statement shows that TFG has no political legitimacy within Somali society. The only way the TFG can stay in power is if protected by foreign occupation forces. So, here I reproduce a portion of an essay in which I have delineated the extent to which the warlord regime of Yusuf and Gedi depend wholly on the foreign forces to stay in power. [1] Thus, ending the occupation of Somalia entails the end of the world regime of TFG. Currently, European nations [EU] and Arab and Muslim nations are hoping that there will be enough African Union troops willing to serve as peacekeepers in Somalia so that Ethiopian occupation may came to an end. However, by backing the US sponsorship of Ethiopia’s invasion, the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) are in clear violation of Security Council resolutions 1724, 1725 and 1744 and UN Charter. This is because Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia violates the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia. [1] As a result, AU defense of Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia, ironically to “protect” Ethiopia’s national sovereignty, AU forces currently in Somalia, as wells as those who may arrive at a later date are, by logical extension, part of Ethiopia’s occupation forces in Somalia and will remain to be so even if Ethiopia’s soldiers eventually leave Somalia. This is one of the reasons why the current US administration prefers a long term Ethiopian occupation of Somalia. [2] Indeed, from the standpoint of the Bush administration, this has to be the case for the two simple reasons: there are no enough African nations willing to send their soldiers to act as mercenary force to prop up the warlords of the transitional government. However, without the protection of foreign forces, the criminal warlord regime of TFG cannot last a day. The numbers simply do not add up for any meaningful AU peace keeping forces in Somalia which does not include the current Ethiopian troops inside Somalia as an occupying army. This is because seven months into the Ethiopian occupation of Somalia, only 1600 hundred soldiers from Uganda have arrived. In order to overcome this problem, the Bush administration is currently working a thinly disguised strategy designed at conflating concepts of occupation and peacekeeping to keep the thuggish warlord regime in power as U.S puppet regime. Thus, by mixing and blending much larger Ethiopia’s occupation troops with few thousands troops as peacekeepers from AU nations, the Bush administration is hoping to turn the current illegal Ethiopia’s occupation of Somalia as legitimate and permanent. The strategy is based, purely, on the geopolitical interests of the U.S. This policy’s objective is clear from the Bush administration’s opposition to Ethiopia’s troop withdrawal from Somalia. . [3] However, any hint that AU peacekeeping forces in Somalia are the same as Ethiopian occupation troops, will, most certainly, secure the failure of AU peacekeeping mission. In addition, this wrongheaded policy will lead to more violence and more bloodshed. It is plainly clear to many of us that the Bush administration cannot impose on the Somali citizens the rule of ruthless thuggish warlords even if they are US “friendly” puppet regime. “The US and the African Union have warned Ethiopia not to withdraw its troops from Somalia before peacekeepers are deployed to replace them. AU commission chief Alpha Oumar Konare says it would be a “catastrophe” if Ethiopia pulled out too soon. US Africa envoy Jendayi Frazer said it would probably be several months before the full peacekeeping force arrived. Ethiopia’s prime minister says he wants to withdraw all his troops, after they helped oust Islamists. Up to a third of the population fled recent fighting in the capital, Mogadishu, and badly need aid.” [4] It is clear from the current death and destruction taking place in Ethiopia’s occupied Somalia, how the Zinawi’s Tigre troops currently looting local Somali businesses , raping Somali women and killing unarmed civilians with impunity can serve the role of peacekeepers. In fact it is clear that Zinawi, and other IGAD members have been the major force of instability for Somali society, while Union of Islamic Counts has been a force for peace, national rebuilding and national reconciliation in Somalia. “Somalia’s recent agonies are a direct consequence of the American-backed invasion by Ethiopia four months ago to topple Mogadishu’s Islamic Courts Union and install the weak and largely secular transitional federal government”. [5] But the Bush administration sponsorship of Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia has nothing to do with the security of the people of Somalia. Ethiopia’s army is in Somalia as mercenary tribal army of Tirge Christian tribe of Ethiopia and also to meet Bush’s geopolitical agenda in Somalia. What is shocking is that Bush administration’s criminal takeover of Somalia has the full support of the international community. It is on the bases of these layered crimes against the people and the nation of Somalia that, on 29 May 2007, Ethiopia foreign minister[ a Tigre tribalist], Seum Mesfin, revealed to the international media, in occupied Mogadishu, that Ethiopian troops will remain in Somalia so that “Islamic elements will not disturb either the Somali government or the Somalia population.”[6] It is clear that this Tigre provocation against the nation and people of Somalia indicated both grave dangers ahead and an ultimate victory for the people of Somalia. The Grave dangers are clear from the daily looting, raping and maiming of the innocent people. It is good news because Somali people are openly and vigorously resisting the colonial takeover of their country by the Tigre Christian tribe of Ethiopia and the neocon regime of the Bush administration. And as since, all other colonial enterprises, the current Tigre colonial occupation will face an utter defeat, and the thuggish warlords of the TFG will go with the departing occupying army. Still, against all the signs they will, Iwant to pose the question: will European Union and Canada support the Bush administration’s crime against the people and the nation of Somalia? This question is pertinent since the Bush administration has shown its immense capacity to ignore international law, the UN, EU conventions when these rules conflict with U.S. political or economic objectives. For example, right after the US sponsored Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia, in clear violation of UN arms embargo against Somalia, the Bush administration covertly helped Ethiopia purchase new tanks and other military hardware from North Korea.[7] These tanks and other weapons are being used to kill, maim and terrorize the citizens of Somalia ”Ethiopian tanks in Somalia. Ethiopia bought much of its military equipment from the former Soviet Union and relies on North Korean parts.” (Michael Kamber: The New York Times)[8] For the Somalis currently living inside brutal occupation of Zinawi and the criminal warlord regime of Yusuf and Gedi, the message is clear. Somalis have been and will resist the foreign occupation of their country. Many Somalis have paid with their blood for the liberation of their country. It is also clear to the people of Somalia that the 6 June 2007 press release by US mouthpiece, the Contact Group for Somalia seeks to give false legitimacy to Meles Zinawi’s Tigre Christian takeover of Somalia and in the name of serving greater Christian enterprise of the Bush administration’s war on the Muslim world.[9] After their recent London meeting, the real power behind the CGS, the assistant US secretary of state for African affairs, Jendayi Frazer, went out of her way to blame the current death and destruction Zinawi’s Tigre troops and militia loyal to the thuggish warlords of Yusuf and Gedi are wrecking in Somalia on Eritrea. She claimed, without providing a shred of evidence to back her hysterical assertions, that Eritrea was, harbouring “extremist elements” linked to violent Islamist groups. In fact, Ms Frazer seems to want to place the entire US sponored Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia and concomitant death and destruction Zinawi’s Tigre army is wrecking on the people of Somalia as Eritrea’s fault! There is no hint in Ms Frazer’s accusing tone that it is Meles Zinawi and warlord regime of Yusuf and Gedi supported by her regime, and not Eritrea, which are stalking, maiming, raping, looting and humiliating the people of Somalia on daily basis. Accordingly, despite widespread intimidations, maiming, arrests, closing down of media outlets in areas of Somalia under the control of the Ethiopian army and the Warlords, Ms Frazer portrays Ethiopia as innocent victim of wreckers and spoilers of peace such as Eritrea, the victims themselves and members of the Somalia Diaspora community. The bottom line is this: The criminal warlord regime of the TFG is protected by the Ethiopia’s leader, Meles Zinaw, his menacing, looting, raping tribal Tirge troops and by the Bush administration. However, Zinawi is a dictator who is hated by the majority of the Ethiopian people. By fighting a war with Somalia, in the name of Ethiopia, he is hoping to prolong his inevitable political demise. Given Zinawi’s record of gross and widespread human rights abuses in Ethiopia, the Bush administration is taking advantage of Zinawi’s capacity for ruthlessness to pacify the Somali population in the service of the new US puppet regime of transitional federal government. But, with the rate at which Zinawi and the warlords are wrecking unmitigated death and destruction in Somalia and no Al Qaida terror camps, or terrorists in Somalia, the Bush administration is running out of lies to justify the carnage that is in Somalia. For the people of Somalia, the message is clear. They will and must resist the noe-colonial takeover of their country by Zinawi’s Tigre Christian tribe of Ethiopia supported by the Christian right regime of the Bush administration and mercenary forces of transnational corporations and the brutal dictatorial regime in China. VITORY SHALL BE THIERS!
  19. July 21st, 2007 Source: UNHCR MOGADISHU, Somalia, July 20 (UNHCR) – The return of people to the Somalian capital has reversed, with almost 10,000 people leaving in the last week alone, according to figures compiled by the UN refugee agency and a network of partners. In months of June and July, 20,000 people have returned to Mogadishu. But nearly 21,000 people have fled the daily violence during that period and the pace is rising. There are now more people fleeing the capital daily than people arriving -10,000 have left in the last week Only 125,000 of the estimated 400,000 civilians who fled the heavy fighting that raged in Mogadishu between February and May have returned to the capital, according to figures compiled by UNHCR and its partners. The opening of the National Reconciliation Congress on July 14 has been followed by a series of deadly attacks targeting locations where the conference, which was suspended for several days, is taking place. The attacks have wounded and killed innocent bystanders, including children, and prompted scores of others to flee. “People are leaving the parts of the city where violence intensified in recent days, such as Suqa Hoolaha, Mogadishu Stadium and Ali Kamin, as well as around the industrial street,” a UNHCR staff member reported from Mogadishu. “There is no single day when someone is not killed in that city,” a resident of Mogadishu told one of UNHCR’s local partners. “Because of the insecurity, we had to stop businesses as many of us work in the markets, which have become extremely dangerous since bombs are being detonated there almost daily.” People suffer high levels of stress, as reported by a local aid worker whose organization works with the UN refugee agency: “At any moment, a tragedy might happen to you,” he explained. “Even at night there is no respite as despite the curfew, you can hear automatic gun fire as well as explosions.” While some families have come back to Mogadishu over the past weeks, hoping the violence would diminish, many are considering leaving once more. Attacks launched by anti-government elements wound and kill civilians daily, while the counter-attacks made by forces of the Ethiopian-backed Transitional Federal Government (TFG) often result in civilian deaths. The prospect of still another round of heavy fighting has set many civilians on the road once more. Many families leave the city and head toward the neighbouring provinces of the Shabelles, while some continue their journey until they reach cities such as Baidoa, Merca or as far away as Galkayo in the distant northern area of Puntland. Communities living in the provinces around Mogadishu worry at the prospect of having to cope with even more people displaced from the capital. “Our area has already become overpopulated with families who had fled in March and April and have not gone back,” an elder living in a village in Middle Shabelle told a UNHCR local partner. He explained that some children and old people had died of hunger or illnesses, the worst disaster being the water-borne diseases spread from the use of unclean water. “We are poor people and these displaced families add another burden on us as we do not have the capacity to accommodate them,” he added. Some families cannot even afford to flee Mogadishu as they are too poor to pay for transportation. Such is the case for many of the 3,000 internally displaced persons who have been evicted by the authorities from public buildings where they used to live, sometimes for as long as 16 years. “The remaining settlements are full and there seems to be no other safe public land available, so they have no option other than roaming the streets homeless,” a UNHCR local partner reported. The United Nations has asked the TFG to halt the evictions and to help provide basic services and find alternative solutions for these displaced people. Last month, UNHCR airlifted relief items from its stockpile in Dubai to Mogadishu. This assistance, which includes blankets, plastic sheets, jerry cans, and kitchen sets, will be delivered to the most vulnerable people in the city.
  20. July 15th, 2007 by Amina Mire The “Ir-Reconciliation Conference” and TFG’s Bililqo[1]of the Bakaraha Market “According to BBC News today, Wednesday 11 July 2007, an international delegation led by the European representative for Somalia visited Mogadishu. Under pressure from the United States, the international community seems poised to support the holding of a so-called reconciliation conference by the Ethiopian foisted and dictated TFG entity in Somalia”. The delegation included representative(s) of the United Nations who were reported carrying handbag (s) containing cash in US$ not only for financing that bogus conference, but also possibly to bribe people for their participation” [2] As the above passage by Jama Mohamed Ghalib succinctly registers, tomorrow, the 15 July 2007, a sham conference will open in Ethiopia’s occupied Mogadishu supposedly to discuss and debate conflicts among the Somali people. But this sham spectacle is taking place under the brutal foreign military occupation of Somalia by Zinawi’s Tigre army; the same army which is currently looting local businesses in Mogadishu’s biggest market the Bakarah, mass raping Somali women, killing and maiming unnamed civilians with impunity. So why are the leaders of the United Nations [uN], European Union[EU], the Contact Group for Somalia, African Union[AU] are willing to support this shameful spectacle and the concomitant criminal takeover of Somalia? To understand this requires that we trace the genealogy of layers of corruption and deceitful which support the making of the ‘Ir-reconciliation’ spectacle in Mogadishu. This gathering is nothing more than an occasion for some well connected corporations and individuals to make a fortune in a highly orchestrated looting scam. For the people of Somalia, nothing good will come out of this willful exercise in inhumanity, greed and collective self-deception. I start my enquiry into the making of the upcoming sham Somali reconciliation conference to a de facto group called Contact Group for Somalia.[3] The Contact Group for Somalia was created on June 2006 by the Bush administration, few days after Somali warlords supported by the Bush administration were defeated by the Union of Islamic Courts. As a result, the Contact Group for Somalia has not been a product of United Nations or the Somali people. Rather it is the brainchild of the US State Department. Like many other Bush’s unilateral initiatives, other nations were selected to join the Contact Group for Somalia as partners. “The formation of a “Somalia Contact Group” was announced yesterday by the State Department, which had long expressed concern inside the administration that a policy largely restricted to counter-terrorism priorities might prove counterproductive. On Wednesday, the administration indicated that it was open to discussions with the Islamists as long as they were prepared to seek a peaceful resolution and pledged not to allow Somalia to become an al-Qaeda haven”.The goal of the group’s meeting, to be held in New York, is “to promote concerted action and coordination to support the Somalia transitional federal institutions, and so we are going to be working with other interested states and international organizations on this matter,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said. “We think it’s the right time.”[4] It is pertinent to know that UN has no say in the formation of the Contact Group for Somalia. The time of its formation, it is clear that UN had no idea about the formation of this organization. “A United Nations spokesman said yesterday that Washington had provided few details on the initiative but that the proposed timing coincides with the return from Somalia of Francois Lonseny Fall, the U.N. representative who met with different factions this week.Representatives from the European Union — which also expressed interest this week in talks with the Islamists — are expected to attend. The U.S. delegation is to be headed by the assistant secretary of state for African affairs, Jendayi E. Frazer”.[5] Thus, Contact Group for Somalia was first hatched in the State Department and internationalized to give it veil of legitimacy. “Washington now hopes that a new multinational contact group can shepherd an accommodation between the Islamists and the transition government.”[6] It is clear that the Contact Group for Somalia has been neither a ‘shepherd of peace’ nor a bridge for Somali ‘reconciliation.’ Indeed, the CGS has not been an honest broker of peace but naked partisan and a mouthpiece of Bush administration’s geopolitical agenda in Somalia. By giving its seal of approval the US sponsored formation of the Contact Group for Somalia, the submission of a dossier on Somalia to the UN by the Somali Monitoring Group must be read with caution. This particularly so for the formation of US sponsored de facto CGS suggests that the UN has abnegated its duty to the United Nations. Thus, in the making of the CGS, the UN role had been reduced to that of UN Inc@ US State Department. It is in this climate of political corruption that the production and the submission of the UN Security Council’s highly alarmist and spurious report issued a month after the formation of the CGS by the UN Somali Monitoring Group lacks credibility. “Report of the Monitoring Group on Somalia pursuant to Security Council resolution 1676,November 2006 Published November 2006″ “This UN report states that in July, 2006 Somali Islamic militants supported Hezbollah’s effortsin its war against Israel. In return, Lebanon reportedly provided weapons and training to theSomalis, with the help of Syria and Iran. It adds that Iran attempted to exchange arms for uranium. Finally, it details the “rampant arms flows” and military supplies to Somali Islamists from various African and Middle Eastern nations. The report’s sources are unclear and doubts have been raised as to the report’s credibility”[7] The SMG claimed, without evidence, that UIC poses a clear and presents danger to international security. One of the outlandish claims made by SMG report is the allegation that the UIC sent fighters to Lebanon in support of Hezbollah militia in southern Lebanon during last summer’s fighting between Hezbollah and Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in Lebanon. The Somali Monitoring Group for Somalia did not provide any empirical evidence corroborating this powerful allegation. Yet, it was willing to spin spurious allegations as facts and submit them to the Security Council.[8] Most Somalis saw the Union of Islamic Courts as a force for peace, security and national rebuilding and reconciliation. So why, without a shred of evidence, the Contact Group for Somalia was willing to paint them as “terrorists” and a “threat to world peace”? Noticeable absent from the report by the SMG made no reference to the need to protect the territorial integrity of Somalia or safeguard the security of the people of Somalia. In fact, SMG sought to fault the Union of Islamic Courts for its nationalistic defense of the territorial integrity of Somalia. It is clear from the content of SMG report that Ethiopia, Uganda and IGAD were and are openly meddling in the international affairs of Somalia. Ethiopia is a historical enemy of Somalia. At present, Uganda and Ethiopia, two key members of IGAD, are part of occupation forces in Somalia. On 26 December 2006, six moths after the SMG submitted the spurious alarmist report in question to the Security Council, the Bush administration had sponsored Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia. The Bush administration has shown its immense capacity to ignore international law, the UN and EU conventions when these rules conflict with U.S. political or economic objectives. Ironically, despite the SMG’s effort to reinforce a total weapons embargo against Somalia, the Bush administration covertly helped Ethiopia purchase new tanks and other military hardware from North Korea. These tanks and other weapons are being used to kill, maim and terrorize the citizens of Somalia.[9] One of the clearest signs of layers of interlocking of criminality, complicity, duplicity, deceit that led to the 26 December 2006 Bush administration’s sponsorship of Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia, is the sudden return of widespread looting and the murky enterprise of sea pirates operating off the Indian Ocean Coast of the break away province of Puntland. Thus, it is not accident that Abdullahi Yusuf, Hassan Abshir and other leading warlords currently overseeing both the upcoming “national Ir-reconciliation conference” in Mogadishu and the looting of Mogadishu’s largest market the Bakaraha, are closely associated with Meles Zinawi, China’s hunger for oil, the Bush administration and Puntland the home of pirates. One of the many lingering unanswered questions is that the US has overwhelming sea, air and land military presence in Somalia. In addition to US special forces, there are number of US based “security firms[nice way of saying private armies] operating inside Somalia in the name of hunting elusive Al Qaida terrorists. Yet, the US military has been unable or unwilling to intervene the Pirates of Puntland. Unlike the elusive Al Qaida terrorists supposedly “hiding” among the Somali population, the Puntland pirates are equipped with global positioning technologies, speed boats and heavy weapons. It is not clear how Puntland pirates have managed to successfully evade US aerial, land and navel surveillance operating deep inside the waters, land and air spaces of Somalia. Nevertheless, there is an emerging pattern which shows a clear collusion among US-China oil and security firms, Somali warlords, Meles Zinawi, China and United States.[10] “The Chinese state oil giant, CNOOC, has won permission to search for oil in parts of Somalia, underlining China’s willingness to brave Africa’s most volatile regions in its hunt for natural resources. Somalia has been a no-go area for US oil companies since it descended into anarchy in the early 1990s. This year the capital, Mogadishu, has seen its worst violence in 16 years as insurgents seek to topple a fragile interim government”.[11] The use of mercenary armies financed by the US and China are essential to the various levels of looting of Somalia. “Dyncorp is not the only U.S. security company working in Africa. Northrop Grumman Corp. (nyse: NOC - news - people ) has a similar contracts, worth up to $75 million, to support the African Contingency Operations Training and Assistance program, which aims to train 40,000 African peacekeepers over five years. KBR Inc., a subsidiary of Halliburton Co. (nyse: HAL - news - people ), provides services to at least three bases in Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia used by the U.S. Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa”. “The contracts come at a time when the Pentagon wants to develop closer relationships and provide greater military assistance to Africa. ….In 2005 the Somali government signed a $50 million contract with New York-based TopCat Marine Security to help create a coast guard to protect its coast and shipping from pirates. The State Department blocked TopCat from deploying because of a U.N. arms embargo, Hassan Abshir Farah, Somalia’s marine resources minister said. Farah said his government was now discussing a deal with the Chinese government and Chinese marine security firms”.[12] It is pertinent to stress that in 1995 Somalia did not have an effective federal government and that Hassan Abshir Farah is at ones a key members of Puntland’s fiefdom, a former head of Siyad Barre’s notorious security apparatus [NSS][13]and the current security minister of the criminal regime in Mogadishu.[14] It is in this context that the sham US sponsored conference, which will open tomorrow in Ethiopian/Uganda, US/warlord occupied Mogadishu and the looting of Mogadishu’s biggest commercial nerve centre, Bakaraha by militia loyal to TFG and Zinawi’s Tigre displays the interlocking system of criminality and depravity. Inside the conference hall, and away from crude looting and the concomitant suffering of the people of Somalia, members of the Somali Contact Group, and UN, EU will distribute blood money to various figures. Naturally, some of the loot will trickle down to variously hand picked clan leaders, warlords, spies, and plain charlatans! For ordinary Somalis, nothing good will come out this shameful spectacle. The message is clear. Somalis will struggle for the liberation of their country and victory will be theirs! The rise of the culture of Bililiqo and the rise of criminal warlords, which the current TFG is the an stark example are linked. They both mark the collapse of law and order in Somali society.
  21. Let us come up with another strategy and save the main market from being destroyed: When enemy overtakes a country with a history of animosity and hatred, they not only target by killing the intellectual but also they will wipe out all important institutions that are key for the country’s development whether social, economical and political institutions to make sure that the country will be brought to its knees. The purpose is so simple to comprehend they don’t want that country to stand up on its feet once again or at least it takes long time to heal of the marks and wounds left over. The same thing is currently happening in Bakaro the main Somali Market whose expansion had been phenomena to the west despite their isolation of the Somali people from the international markets. By banning all Somali exports that brought in hard currency to the country i.e. livestock and Banana and others. I really hate commenting on the confusion of the Somali politics however, one thing woke me up with a fright. Somalis had been suffering economic decline since the fall of the last regime almost 16 years ago, meanwhile we lost all infrastructures on which the potential growth and development may have rested on. They had been systematically eliminated after an enemy told the warlords to devastate them, living under extreme illusion of the intentions of the west, they did the havoc according to type and magnitude of the required destructions on all sort of damage they could inflict upon us. Now to make matter worse the country is under occupation believe it or not under the pretext of fight against terror. In light of the initial stages of the war, the enemy targeted every body regardless of their nature, as reported those suffered the most were the civilian or in other words the none-combatants, so far none of the so-called human rights organization talked about it. Is not it the time to learn from our mistakes? Surely to my point of view, it is the most appropriate time to reflect our action the experience we gained from the hypocrisy of the international community and think about how we can make tangible achievement on the ground at the same time avoiding significant damage being inflicted upon our own people. If the current problem in Bakaro continues nonstop for another twenty days to come, what will the situation may be like? Once this question is answered then the solution may seem close. This guides the intelligent to strategies in short run of this emergency situation to call of this crisis and find alternative ways to fight against the enemy. I am not suggesting the Somalis should give up but at least think about whether or not they would like to see the market turned into nothing but havoc the majority will say no we don’t want that to happen, then knowing the fact that a number of other heavily fought over aeries had been destroyed from the day the enemy captured Somalia and continues to destroy until they make us economically disable and remain dependant on them hundred year to come. The struggle should be kept on many fronts, I don’t see the role of the educated perhaps they are mainly preoccupied with their personal activities. Please wake up and talk about by shedding light on the massacre and aggression against the Somali people that are currently being occupied. Please think and save the thousands of people whose livelihood depend on what they produce out of the business activities in Bakaro. The other similar bleak picture is that if this market is destroyed other markets will take similar suit. Finally may Allah save the Somalis from the ill-intention of the enemy Abdirahman Ahmed Mudey Interntional Islamic university Malayisa muudeey1@yahoo.com
