The bloodshed began Monday when insurgents attacked government bases, said Sudan Ali Ahmed, chairman of Elman Human Rights, an independent Somali group. His organization arrived at the death toll by contacting hospitals and doing its own surveys throughout the city. "Thirty-one civilians were killed and another 60 were wounded in the past 24 hours," Ahmed told The Associated Press. Ahmed said that the last time so many civilians were killed in 24 hours was between June 3 and June 4. Ethiopian troops here to protect Somalia's government opened fire after a bomb went off near their base, he said. There was also a bomb attack on a public minibus, several grenade explosions and a gunbattle with police, witnesses and authorities said. Mogadishu, one of the world's most violent cities, has been ravaged by fighting that pits Somali troops and their Ethiopian allies against insurgents trying to topple the fragile administration. Thousands of civilians have been caught in the crossfire this year. Islamic militants vowed to conduct an insurgency in December, when they were defeated by Ethiopian troops supporting Somalia's government. Somalia has been mired in chaos since 1991, when warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and then turned on each other. Ali Iman Sharmarke, in his 40s died while Sahal of Reuters was wounded in a roadside bomb explosion that ripped off their car around 2:30pm as they were returning from the funeral of Mahad Ahmed Elmi who was earlier this morning killed in near Horn Afrik headquarter. Falastiin Ahmed, the wife of one of HornAfrik owners, Ahmed Abdisalan was also wounded. One of the journalists that was following the convoy confirmed Somalinet the death of Ali Sharmarke who was also the general director of Horn Afrik Radio and TV in Mogadishu. Meanwhile, The head of the Capital Voice radio FM belonging to the independent HornAfrik Media was shot dead in the Somalia capital Mogadishu on Saturday. Mahad Ahmed Elmi in his 30s was gunned down by two men armed with pistols around 7:40am local time as he was on his way to the station early this morning. Horn Afrik went off air after the news of the death arrived. His death shocked all the local journalists in Somalia. One of the armed men picked up a pistol and shot two bullets on his head and few minutes after Mahad died before reaching to the hospital. Also, unknown gunmen seriously wounded a Somali journalist in Mogadishu, the Somali capital, last night. Abdihakim Omar Jimale, was attacked at his home in Yaqshid neighborhood, north of the capital. It is not yet clear who were behind the latest acts of killings and wounding the journalists and no group has claimed the responsibility. Today was black day for all local journalists in Somalia after they lost two key press officers.

The first battle began around Howlwadag junction at 11:30pm tonight when Islamic militants exchanged gunfire with the government soldiers at the nearby police station. There is no immediate casualty resulted because the city is still under curfew. Liban Hassan, a resident living near the junction told Somalinet by telephone that the insurgents carried out an organized attack on the soldiers using rocket propelled grenades and automatic machine-guns which terrorized the residents. Two hours later the second battle flared up in former dairy factory in south of the capital where the militants launched another ambush attack on the government soldiers around 1:30pm local time. The insurgents dressed in the uniform of the government soldiers fired dozens of mortars and rocket propelled grenades, which forced the government troops to vacate the camp, according local sources. “At once we found the sound of rockets and mortars being fired at the army position, we could hear the screams of the soldiers calling for help,” said M. Bashir, a local resident living in the area. It is still sketchy to find out the casualty. It is the worst nighttime battle in Mogadishu in recent weeks after the end of the Bakara market siege that had an impact on the life in the capital. One third of the people fled Mogadishu due to escalating violence.
