Heavy fighting between insurgents and Ethiopian troops backing Somalia's shaky government has killed 50 people and wounded 100 others in the past 24 hours, witnesses and doctors said. The latest clashes are among the heaviest fighting since April, when battles left at least 1,670 people dead in Mogadishu. Ethiopia has been pushing more troops into the capital in recent days, causing an increase in contact between insurgents and government troops and their Ethiopian allies, residents said. Ethiopian troops based at the former defence ministry in the south of the capital fired tank shells into the main Bakara market early on Friday, killing eight civilians, Khalif Haji Muse told AP, adding two others died when Ethiopian snipers fired at them. Other witnesses said six others died when shells crashed into their homes. The bodies of 34 people, among them four women and six Ethiopians, were found in the northern and southern parts of Mogadishu, where fighting was intense a day earlier, witnesses said. Mogadishu has seen little peace since December, when Ethiopian troops supporting Somalia's UN-backed government ousted an Islamic group called the Council of Islamic Courts. This year alone, thousands of Somalis have been killed in fighting between Ethiopian troops and Islamic insurgents who vowed to launch an Iraq-style guerrilla war after they were chased from the capital and much of southern Somalia. Presidential spokesman Hussein Mohamed Mohamud said insurgents would be treated harshly. The insurgents' aim, Mohamud said, "is to depict the fighting as a war between Ethiopians and Somali people. Far from it." "The fighting is between government troops and their Ethiopian friends on one hand, and the peace-haters on the other hand and anyone who hurts Ethiopian or Somali troops will be treated as a traitor," he said. The fighting on Thursday afternoon began when Ethiopian troops tried to retrieve the body of one of their soldiers who had been killed in earlier skirmishes in the south of the city. Hundreds of protesters - mainly women and children - chanting anti-Ethiopian slogans dragged the body, which had been left behind by fleeing soldiers, through the city for about 8 km, witnesses said. Ethiopian troops based in the south fired several tank shells into the north of the city, hitting the livestock market, which is seen as a hotbed of supporters of Islamic insurgents, said local resident Abdiaziz Mohamed Guled. The dragged soldier was one of two Ethiopian soldiers killed earlier on Thursday along with a Somali in a heavy fighting that started when hundreds of Ethiopian soldiers from two nearby military bases began patrols in the northeastern Hurwa neighbourhood. Doctors at Medina, Keysaney and Daynile hospitals said they have treated 100 civilians with gunshot wounds since Thursday. Sporadic gunfire could be heard in the north and south of the capital on Friday and Somali government troops were patrolling some of the streets, residents said. But no substantial fighting was reported on Friday morning. On Wednesday, the humanitarian agency Doctors Without Borders said the fighting had grown so bad that civilians who were shot or hit by shrapnel during the night frequently bled to death because the violence cut them off from the hospitals. The impoverished Horn of Africa nation has not had a functioning government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a dictator and then turned on one another.

They should change its name to UNC---united nations of crooks!! Somalia: UN chief says peacekeepers for Somalia not viable Fri. November 09, 2007 05:41 pm.- By Bonny Apunyu. - Send this news article (SomaliNet) The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Thursday that sending UN peacekeepers to Somalia is not realistic and the international community should consider other options including a "coalition of the willing". This year, hundreds of thousands of people have fled Somali capital Mogadishu amid persistent fighting since Somalia's transitional government came to power after ousting militant Islamists with the help of Ethiopian troops. Meanwhile, the Somali government has urged the United Nations to send peacekeepers. In August, the Security Council asked Ban to develop contingency plans for such a deployment. "Under the prevailing political and security situation, I believe that the deployment of a United Nations peacekeeping operation cannot be considered a realistic and viable option," Ban said in a report to the Security Council. He said it had not even been possible to send a technical assessment team to Somalia because of the lack of security, though he added the peacekeeping department would continue to review contingency plans for possible peacekeeping operations. Earlier this year, the African Union agreed to deploy 8 000 troops to replace the government's Ethiopian backers, but so far only about 1 600 Ugandan troops have arrived. In the latest spasm of violence, Somali insurgents dragged the bodies of dead Ethiopian soldiers through the streets of Mogadishu on Thursday amid fighting that killed at least 21 people. The grisly scenes recalled the 1993 shooting down of two Black Hawk helicopters by Somali militiamen during a failed US operation to hunt down warlords in Mogadishu. Images of dead Americans dragged through the streets by joyous Somalis deeply shocked US public opinion, precipitating American withdrawal and contributing to the ending of a UN peacekeeping operation in 1995. Ban urged AU countries who have pledged soldiers to the current force there to deploy their troops as soon as possible, and said the United Nations would work with the AU to support the force, which faces serious financial and logistic problems. "Given the complex security situation in Somalia, it may be advisable to look at additional security options, including the deployment of a robust multinational force or coalition of the willing," Ban said. "Such a force could initially be small and self-sustaining, growing over time with the achievement of specific security and political milestones," he said, adding that in time such a force could allow the withdrawal of Ethiopian troops. Ban also urged the Somali government to press ahead with national reconciliation, saying it should reach out to opposition groups and implement commitments such as preparing for elections in 2009.-Reuters

Open the northern Eritrean front, open the western somali front, open the somali front....then what do u get?? i say what do u get? cant here yah... a dead Amxaar!! so what the dabo dilif tfg is gonna do!! Surrender and get that noose on their necks. cant wait to see that!! NAIROBI, Nov. 5 -- Ethiopia and Eritrea, stubbornly hostile neighbors for years, are possibly weeks away from a renewed border war that could engulf the volatile Horn of Africa region, according to a report released Monday by a foreign policy research group. The two countries have been on the brink for some time. But the current military buildup along their border has reached "alarming proportions," with opposing troops separated in some areas by only a dry riverbed, according to the report by the International Crisis Group, based in Brussels. The risk that Ethiopia and Eritrea will resume their war in the next several weeks is very real," the report says, adding that the United States could play a vital role in averting a conflict. Eritrea, a tiny country with one of the largest armies in Africa, has about 12,000 troops near the disputed border, as well as 4,000 positioned inside a demilitarized zone that was established by a peace agreement that ended a 1998-2000 border war, according to U.S. government estimates cited in the report. On its side of the border, Ethiopia, a U.S.-backed military powerhouse, maintains an estimated 100,000 troops who have been carrying out large-scale training exercises in recent months. Ethiopia also has been building up its air force and jamming Eritrean radar, according to a U.S. government source, who speculated that Ethiopia may strike by air in the Eritrean capital, Asmara, hoping to topple the government there. In strictest terms, the conflict focuses on ownership of a dirt-road, mud-hut border village called Badme, which a U.N.-backed border commission ruled is inside Eritrea. Eritrea has endorsed that decision; Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has refused to accept it. Analysts say the dispute is more about the internal political calculations of two political elites determined to remain in power. Although Meles and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki once had close ties as rebels fighting together in the bush against Ethiopian dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam, they have in recent years become mortal enemies. Ethiopia has for years backed a variety of groups inside Eritrea aiming to destabilize Isaias's government. Likewise, Eritrea has continued to funnel weapons and money to separatist rebels in Ethiopia's ****** region. Ethiopia's invasion of Somalia last December was in part a proxy war with Eritrea, which retains close ties to the Islamic movement that Ethiopia ousted. Since the invasion, Eritrea has hosted many of the deposed Islamic leaders who are thought to be behind insurgents battling Ethiopian troops in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. In the context of a U.S. foreign policy driven primarily by counterterrorism objectives, Ethiopia has remained a key U.S. ally. Washington supported Ethiopia's invasion of Somalia and has roundly condemned Eritrea for hosting the Somali Islamic leaders. Given that support, Meles may decide that now is the time to try to get rid of the Eritrean leadership, the report says.

well a scholar is not a leader. a leader is born to be a leader and is some who has a back bone, like the bunch who fought for somali independence. we lost them due to time, hopefully, their genes still in circulation and will pop out soon.
