  1. J11, Mahadsanid saaxib. In kastoo aanan afka soomaaliga aan sidaasi faqri ugu ahayn, haddana maanta waxaan bartay kalmado cusub. Waxaa jira kalmado adag in la tarjuumo (kuwaaso iskugu jira kuwo cilmiga iyo farsamada cusub) sida: Computer Data TV Telephone (Gabadha kor ku xusan ee Rauli la yiraahdo waxaay tiri waa SIIN- laakin aniga waxaay ila tahay in la yiraahdo TAAR).
  2. Asc, Waxaan idinka codsanayaa inaad ii sheegtaan sidii loo tarjuumi lahaa kalmadahaan ku saabsan aqoonta: (Ra'igeega waxaan geliyey qaanso) A Bachelor´s degree (Like in BSC) (doob)? Master's degree =Hanade? PHD-candidate (?????). Mahadsanidiin
  3. Assalamu calaykum, Allow me to bring to your notice this website. In the sea of hatred, warlordism and clanism, a group of somalis have initiated this website to revive the somaliweyn concept. Read their mission statement and papers on how to improve the image of somalis! http://www.israac.org/site/
  4. Smithwestern bro, You are right. The problem as well as the solution to the somali problem lies in the south. With Allah's help, the so called peace process in Kenya might help southerners (puntland included) form a broad form of government. When that is done and the somalis forget about previous atrocities (and forgive each other), somaliland would come banging on the doorsteps. I think we should give some time to think to our brothers in somaliland. If, and when somalia becomes an economic might and prospers, the whole world (including somaliland) would want to join them. Who wouldn't want to be part of a progressive nation`? A natíon that has learnt from past mistakes). The goodness with the federal system is that power would be centralised and there would be a stiff competition between the states. The southern regions of Shabeele/Jubba have the upper hand in terms of agriculture (a sector we should support with subsidies as the EU-does), the midlands and Puntland have the entrepreneurial spirit. There is of course the obstacle of "warlordism" mentality. The people have gone through such horror that creating trust would be difficulty- we have the warlords who would lose come peace. Since, war and destruction has failed us, I blv a better strategy to offset warlordism is the carrot. Any future somali government should find mechanisms to get people into work!
  5. Horn of africa, (I wrote smith thinking he was the one who quoted me) Blv me bro, there is no qabyaalad (on the contrary, I think the person who contempletes a gedo-jubba alliance is the one who thoughts are coloured by qabyaalism). The jubba hoose and shabeelada hoose have geographic proximity,, But I fail to see how Doolow, Luuq, Beledxaawo, bardheere etc could be adminstered from Kismayo. Such a thought is only valid if one departs from the qabyaalad-qurun thesis. My suggestion has alot to do with geography and is based on the premises of NOT rewarding tribally induced war bounties!
  6. Smith, bro Tell me how a resident of doolow, Luuq, Buulo xaawo etc could be ruled from Kismanyo and not Baydhabo? Jubadda Dhexe is geographically proximate to shabeelada dhexe than the central part of Gedo--don't you agree? I think the southern part of somalia should be divided in four main states: Puntland, - The capital would be Bosaso Midland (Galgaduud to balcad). The capital_ Beledweyne Coastal state (Merca to Kismayo) The capital Jilib Southwestern (Half of middle jubba, Gedo, Bay bakool). The capital Baydhabo Xamar (Banadir) should be accorded special status.
  7. Smith bro, Gedo and Lower juba have nothing in common. Gedo borders Middle jubba, bay and bakool. Lower Jubba and lower shabeele (with the HQ at Barawe/Jilib) would make the richest "state" in somalia. An appropiate name would be the coastal state. Afmadow, Buaale, Saakow should be incorporated in the mid west state (bay, Bakool and gedo) We shouldn't allow tribalism and the thugs to redraw the borders of regions in somalia.
  8. Baashiyow, sxb dhowr sanno ka hor markaan soomaaliya imid anigoo kuri yar ah waxaa laigugu sheekeyey in hablaha soomaaliyeed aay hubkooda gacanta ku sita oo aay fududahay in lala hasaawo (iyo in ka badanba). Beri baan offside galay. Jamhuuriyadda dhan waan ku wareegay meel waliba waxaa ka jirey in lais xifaaleeyo; Reer qurac hablahooda ma istinjoodaan, Reer garas ragooda sidiid dumarka ayaay faantamaan Reer garamgaram qamriga iyo xashiishka waa u xalaal etc, Laakin markaad u dhabo gashid aalaba waxyaabahaasi sal iyo raad malaha. Runtii waay jiraan dhaqamo kala gedisan oo aay ummadda soomaliyeed leedahay; kuwaasi oo loo arko inaay caadi ahayd, hase yeeshe, ilama aha in arrinta aad xustay aay jirto. Dadka aad xustay, anigu waan la dhaqmey, (khaastan kuwa degan kenya) waxyaabahaasina kuma aanan arag.,Waa dad u badan islaam. Meesha aan ku dhashay waxaan deris la aheenay Boranta; dhaqankooda wuxuu ahaa mid lala yaabo; Ninka xaaskiisa waa loo daba maraa; waran unbuu surunayaa; haddii qof kale uu yimaado oo uu arko waran suran wuu sii gudbayaa. Sidoo kale markii uu odeyga reerka dhinto waa lala aasaa warankiisa iyo xaaskiisaba.
  9. Baashi, sxb, I probably have more knowledge of the Gare than anyone on this site. I have heard of this while in somalia. I investigated, talked to friends etc. Many of it is hear-say or xifaale as the somalis says. In the qoryooley area, we have alot of refugees from sidamo (many of them are caruus, Oromo, Galla). Of course, there could be some traces of atheism in that area. It is the same as the Geedishambow, Bucur bacayr, Dhegadheer etc...Could the actions of these mythical characters be used to smear a whole clan? I am sure some of the members of the clan who visit this site would feel offended, don't you think?
  10. Guys! Check these cartoons: http://www.geeskaafrika.com/igad2020_21sept04.htm
  11. Farxan, waad ku mahadsantahay inaad furtid derishadaan. What a pity that the brightest of minds on SOL embrace warlordism and their sick agenda that has ruined our nation, people etc. Instead of wishing these warlords a life in hell (for bringing hardship to innocent somalis), some members would even go to a great length to portray them as heros. I am also sick of reading propaganda from a tribally based websites! Hiraale, Morgan, Caydid, yalaxow, abdullahi yusuf, boy, shaatigaduud, caato, xaabsade, Gaani, warsame belong to hell for tarnishing the somali name; for murdering innocent somalis; for killing somalinimo etc etc These people don't belong to a region/tribe or islam for that matter. Their religion is war, their qabiil is qurun, their goal is to divide somalis. Their killings don't deserve a thread. It deserves to be condoned by good somalis.
  12. Baashi and Shoobaro, That is nonsense! It is sheeko baaraleey. The story narrated by shoobaro is common in the borana and sakuuye community! These are pagans!
  13. Ummaddu waa isku diin/nabi kala afse
  14. Doktoreso Raula, I would say waa isku leenahay I am from the old school of cad iyo caano! In my world, fruits and vegetables are camel diet ! By the way, check the following link (in particular the publications). http://myprofile.cos.com/msheekhussein
  15. Dr. WD bro, Those are kids! They look like they are preparing for subac. In regards to the article, I can smell a fish called "war against terror". Ilaahey ummadda soomaaliyeed nabada seegtay ha u keeno.
  16. Ina Libaax sankataabte thanks bro, I appologise! Raula
  17. ASC, Viking and Rauli (good luck with your studies) thanks for the info. This friend of mine was a doctor who specialised in infectious diseases. I am suspecting that he met many somalis whose blood contained traces of HBV. Could mosquoitoes be the carrying agents of HBV? Another friend of mine (this one a somali nurse) in London told me (six years ago) that he was involved in a public health project in south-east london to investigate the general health of somalis. They visted Qaad houses and found that 67 percent of the somalis they investigated had either; TBC, HBV and other communable diseases. I tried to call this guy last night and ask him whether the study was published..but apparently he is in Somalia and working on a similar project!
  18. ASC, Glad to note that we have medical students/practitioners on SOL. A swedish friend of mine who happens to me an MD told me that there is an increase of hepatises b and c cases among somalis. Could any of you shed some light on the extent of Hepatices cases among somali communities overseas? How this disease is transmitted in the somali community? Could the chewing of qaad be a factor? He told me also there is no known cure for this disease.Any drugs on the way?
  19. Assalamu calaykum, Ina Libaax sankataabte bro, according to sources in the bay of pigs in madaxkorankorland, somalia would háve a president whose qualities include; Garac-garac dhalay aka ***** -***** dhalay najis-najis dhalay doofaar doofareey dhalay gaalo gacmaha ka leefa diintiisa aay tahay qabiil soomaali laayey qarankii gatay Bro, the outcome of the somali "peace" process is one that has recognised the slaughter/killings/rape of somalis as a top quality. A president elected on that premises would certainly make sure that he kills more somalis to strengthen his position. I am voting for my ego Jinoole for that position. I am sure bashir and Nur would vote for me. Seriously, the top runners to become a president in somalia are those who are responsible for our plight and "electing" them would mean crime pays. I am aware that they are a few who never committed a crime, but there is something fishy about the process and they stand no chance. Check out this site . It contains Amin caamir's satire http://www.hiiraan.ca/2004/aug/amin_amir/amin_amir0802122.htm
  20. J11, Good points! Nomadism has become the trademark of somalis although any sound scrutiny tells us the vast majority of those who call themselves nomads were born in urbanised areas. The demographic situation in somalia is 1) The densely populated south is inhabited by small scale farmers and trade. 2) The north too (with arabsiyo and the fertile belts are home to many farmers). The reason why Africa in general and somalia in particular is lagging behind in terms of economic development is the nomenculture of ilbaxnimo. Through this pseudoculture of immitation, many of us have a negative attitude to consuming products that endogenous to our region. For ex; the consumtion of maize, millet and other kinds of crops are viewed as inferior. In their place the geeljire turned urban would prefer rice and pasta. The camel, which many somalis are fond of is becoming a rare animal on the landscape of several regions. The somali camel is today found in the NFD (where I hailed from- my dad has a few of them), western somalia, the bakool and bay regions and the haud. But many of the camelherding is combined with some kind of farming or city life. The somali economy has for decades being driven by agriculture, small scale production and entrepreunship. As you clearly stated, many of those who do that kind of businesses are given names/titles etc and in the process induced to change profession. Most of the developed nations of the world have attained their competitive strengths due to active policy of encouraging what we somalis feel are inferior professions: Handcraft, farming and small scale business development. The subject of somali nomadism is one of the reasons why we have the mess in somalia. It has apart from discoursal reasons, led to somalis embracing the notion of uniformity in terms of culture. The camel and nomadic life has/was the source of what is generally termed as somali culture. Thus, we have a camelisation of somali culture. Unfortunately, many educated somalis in the west and at home are not daring to discuss what sector of the somali economy is the largest. You'd find them write somalis are nomads, how sacred the camel is and create this social construction. p.s the same disclaimer applies. By the way did you people read this article? The politics of MALAAY & KALLUUN (Unity in diversity makes the stronger bond.) Let me start with the preface that the main aim of this sensitive article is to pinpoint the past mistakes of all of us- Somali communities and regimes- committed and we should learn from mistakes. We will never forget the mistakes but we forgive so that the same mistakes will not be repeated. Revenge is also worse than the mistake because it multiplies the magnitude of the mistake. Forgiving while pinpointing the mistake is the best solution to prevent a repetition of a mistake. In every country , there are several communities that differ from each other in certain ways of life – let it be the dialects of the language , the physical gestures , attitudes , characters and ways of thinking that gave each community its special identity. What makes a nation stable and progressive is the unanimous generalization of the freedom to practice these identities by its community and the respect for each community to the other. Part of the problems in our country came from lack of every community to recognize and respect for other communities’ identities and the wish to dominate them in many ways. It is a social disaster when the president utilizes his political powers to subjugate the identities of certain community and propagate those of others and to the worst of it if he makes it a national duty. Words are formed naturally out of certain cultures and interactions and if they have to be fabricated, it should not serve short term objectives only. The word “ HANTIGOOSAD†which means capitalism has a negative impression on every Somali speaking at the mere spell of it because its creators were at the time solid followers of the socialist ideology and were in high esteem for it. It also compelled them to give a decorated name “HANTIWADAAG†to its adversary rival “The Socialismâ€; If the Somali government was a strong ally of the WEST and the capitalist ideology was adopted in the country, we would end up having a beautiful name for the capitalism and an ugly one for the socialism. While the phrases like “ MALAAYAAN CUNOOYAA “ and “ KALLUUN BAAN CUNAHAYAA†both have same meaning unfortunately those who speak the latter phrase were considered as better Somali speaking citizens. Does it harm if the teacher of an elementary school in Mogadishu uses the word “MALAAY’ while the one in the northern part of the county keeps the word “KALLUUN†and pupils of both sides would enjoy the language. In India there are fifteen principal languages and different dialects and each region uses its regional language in school teaching, newspapers, radio broadcasts while the Hindi language is the main official language. In Italy and other European countries , there are various dialects and languages with in each nation. I would consider it a progressive step if the communities of D&M were allowed to teach MAAY MAAY dialects in schools , have regional MAAY language radio broadcast and create arts and music of MAAY MAAY origin while the Somali official language which was not purely based on any regional dialect would be their official language. The new government should respect each and every small and big community in Somalia and allow them to practice their identities freely and fully in their regions.. The word “JAALLE†was never heard in the southern part of the country before the 1969 revolution that came along with new prevailing words. We have had enough lessons from the 15 years of difficult times and what lessons we learn should not only be the great losses of life without government but also the urgent need to recognize the special identities of every community that are the pillars of our nation. Should we have to expect the words like AREE , BOOWE , ARIIROW to be equally filling the Somali national newspapers and radios when the communities that use these words respectively become the ruling giants. If we call it MALAAY , KALAAY OR TALAAY , the importance is that people recognize it for something called FISH but unfortunately very precious words that were originally fluently used in the BENADIR region have vanished because they were made into a shameful whispers instead of proud language that emanated from ancient history and culture. I wonder if any reader from the northern regions of Somalia ever heard of the following words : FUUQ, FASHAQ, KURTA , SHARUUR , MOXOGGO, DHANGALOW , CAANABARAAWE, BEYDAAN, SHALIMAANTALAHAAN,BARJIN, and I would also like to know if some of the southerners themselves ever heard of the following: ALKUN , GAFAR , MANJEERO , URUG, MAAYADA WAA MAAJISAY, BAFTO, UKUR , DHAARAAN, Let Qawdhan proudly keep in his lips words like “ HEEDHE†while Macaani will always happily use “ SAAS MAAHINOO†with his own people and when Macaani and Qawdhan meet occasionally , we let them find a neutral way of communication , each learning what the other means and the official language of the country will have the full features of this neutral way. Every community in Somalia has traditions and dialects special to its identity and we have to admit to be learning from each tradition and letting each to promote its values and by that way we let the democratic principles in our social lives prevail and lead us into a progressive society. I personally feel at ease whenever I utter the phrases like “ SAAS MAAHINOO “ instead of “ MIYAANU CEYNKAA AHEYN†Which my body , brain and mouth all consume a potential energy equal to ten liters of petrol . 23. "best" and "warlords" an oxymoron? Morgan is the name of a malt whisky !
  24. Lakkad, Hi bro, I think indicting somali warlords for crimes against humanity would remain a dream. There is no political initiative in western europe and North america to book them. The current goals of western leaders is to find strategies to get rid of the many of somali asylum seekers. and to achieve that goal, they would even back a warlord to become a president. The developed world don't care whether millions of africans are slaughtered. They care much about their domestic situation and in many western nations there is a "somali" problem that begs for a "somali" solution. Many of the warlords, murderers, qabqables, wadaados etc in Doofareey have been joined by representatives of western government with the sole aim of finding a "somali" solution to their "somali problems at home"! A few years ago, a known somali warlord was invited to sweden with the backing of the swedish foreign ministry. Apparently, this dude was engaged by a somali organisation to speak about repatriation(there are thousands that make a living in western countries- somali is a business idea that generates thousands of kroners here in sweden ). Anyway, several somalis and swedish intellectuals wrote to the government to ask for explaination, specially since there was a warrant to arrest him. The foreign office was on record saying that what was more important from the perspective of the swedish government was to make sure that the tens of thousands of somalis returned home. Marka Lakkad iyo dadka kale, there would be no tribunal.
  25. Sophist, Good article. However, I don't think somalia's problem has anything to do with the passiveness, hibernation or moral decay of "intellectuals". There is perhaps no nation, save Israel that has been built on intellectual capital. Most of the developed nations achieved progress by the combination of two major factors that is absent among many somalis. Firstly, the promotion of handcraftsmanship and farming. These two are often not driven by degrees but sheer survival, hardship that bears fruits after some generations. Secondly, respect for either devine laws or human laws of interaction (written or otherwise). To be frank here, the somali society (mainly in the west) are going through some kind of social and moral decay. The "intellectuals" who were suppose to be the enlighteners and production of critical articles are engaged in a pseudo-imitation of politics. Too often, these "intellectuals" are slaves to their western sphere of thoughts. Why should a doctor become a politician? Why should a professor become engaged in primitive political discourse? They are needed in classrooms soo ma aha ?
