  3. Kenya????????? With all respect to Raula(!), the somalis in the NFD and Western somalia don't live in Kenya or Ethiopia. They live in their own "country". It is insulting to say somalis in Mandera or Harar live in kenya or ethiopia. If anything, these two countries colonize somali territories. The largest somalis outside somalia live in the two colonized territories of NFD and Western somalia. Djibouti, an independent somali state also is home to approximately 400 000 somalis. The figures for somalis in the diaspora vary and are disputable: The United states airlifted approximately 120 000 as part of their resettlement project. Canada has nearly 200 000 somalis. Saudi Arabia has also a substantial number of somalis. The UK has the largest number of somalis in Europe (I saw a figure of 20 000 somalis in london). Sweden is home to nearly 30 000 somalis (24 thousand from somalia, and 6 000 from western somalia). When it comes to which cities has the largest number of somalis, it has to be either Toronto or London, with MN and Jeddah coming second best.

Assalamu calaykum; It is simple; You either believe in Allah and your ability as individual to reason, act and do your obligation as a muslim (you are alone in front of the almighty, no tribe would be there to save you from HIS wrath) or believe in the tribe as a religion, an institution based on fallacy, lies and hear-says which impair your ability to think, reason and act. I am sick and tired of somalis who use Islam to further a cause based on lies. The tribe Allah talked about is somali and not reer qurac, qansax or garas; not the ones we created, constructed and use as a division! The somali tribe never fullfilled a function as may purport it did. It brought us harm, hatred and limited our capacity to develop as people and nation. If anything, it has brought us distruction.

  7. I am concerned this might be the last blow to somalia. Somalia does not need peace keepers. What somalia needs are peacemakers. The somali psyche is "we could murder and rape each other", but "we stand united against others". Of course the reaction of the people might depend on the composition of the peacekeeping forces: We are allergic to Ethiopians and madax korankor ( I am going to join the fight to liberate somalia if these two nations set a foot in somalia). An alternative is to request Djibouti, Eriteria , Sudan and possibly Yemeni to provide soldiers.

  12. Assalamu calaykum, Disguised as aid workers and often with the support of Somalis who can’t make a decent living in the west, Somalia has become a playground for every kind of trash! Aid is a factor that is fuelling the conflict in Somalia. I was at a conference recently in Sweden, to explore ways of rebuilding Somalia. Present at this conference were the aid mafia, somalis who make a living by sucking to western organisations. One Somali (reportedly a loser who came to Sweden two decades ago, but found a nische in the aid market) took the floor and laid the framework of rebuilding Somalia. He requested 60 Billion Swedish crowns (ca: 10 BN dollars). He was flanked by representatives of aid organisations. Among them was an organisation, financed by the Swedish international development agency, called the peace and life institute. According to their mission statements, the primary objective of this organisation is to engage in ecumenical work. I called this organisation and they informed that they work on conflict resolutions overseas and that they are actively engaged in parts of Somalia. Foreign aid does more harm than good. There is ample research to suggest out of every 10 dollars in foreign aid, only one dollar or less reaches the target group. Most of the money ends up in the coffers of the donor countries in the form of consulting, raw materials and expertise.

  14. Caveman You are right that the dollars we remit back home make a difference. The spillover effects maintain the local economy and contribute to the well being of the Somali economy. It brings in hard currency, contribute to entrepreneurship and in some cases play a vital role in promoting the conflict. But, in the long run it may create dependency, a sort of lock in effect –and this is my point. The problem as I see, is not only confined to the Somalis in Somalia who have been exposed to the civil war. It has spilled into Somali inhabited areas, or overseas Somalis in Kenya and the middle east. Another dimension is the life of diaspora Somalis. Many of us are faced with apart from the guilt of not satisfying needs, with severe hardships. We are unemployed, living off welfare, come to societies with differing basic social infrastructure where there is an air of individualism, egoism etc. Although some of us came to the diaspora as grown ups, we are albeit latently involved in a process of slow integration, where we pick the norms of our new countries. A phone call or so from a relative in dire need might cause us sleepless nights, questions etc. In many cases in Somalis, unarguably people lead a better life than us in the diaspora. They are at least domiciled in a place where everyone speaks and lives as a Somali. You raise an interesting point into the forms of cooperative arrangements among women to pool resources. Actually, the ayuuto/sholongo issue is one that needs to be academically explored!. Despite the collapse of Somali Institutional nodes such as trust, the ayuuto/shalongo has survived. It is a contributing factor to our newfound richness (expensive cars and homes in the diaspora) and making life easier back home. The self-help collaborations, which were gender, based and involved symbolic sums is now big business that is an alternative to western forms of savings. Men are also involved. Classique, I agree our contribution helps and benefits! But don’t you think there is a dependency aspect? That we in the diaspora merely become a source of income? That when we kick the basket, our relatives are left at the mercy of others?
  15. Rauli, there is definately a ethiopian/kenyan hiding hand at work in the somali conflict. I don't think resources (agriculture and mineral resources) are the primary objective. These are the same countries a stable somalia threatened for their treatment of somalis. Instead, the aim is to make sure somalia depends on their political will and military leverage. By arming different thugs (read warlords) the taaji smelling garacs and their madax canbuulo's brethen's so called conference is to make sure somalis never become a viable state.

Do you feel guilty for not providing enough assistance to folks back home? Do you wonder whether your money does more harm than good? Are you afraid that your money is used to finance qaad/jaad addiction, polygamy and in some cases to prolong the civil war? Have you had a phone call from a relative who gets angry at the amount he/she receives from you? In that case, you are not alone. Since the collapse of Somalia, various instances of income to the average Somali family have collapsed, crippled or perished. The civil war, has unfortunately also contributed to a redefining of parenthood, solidarity and basic values of Somalis. From being a society that was characterised by handwork and parental responsibility/obligation, where working was a virtue, Somalis in Africa are arguably becoming passive. As depicted in the play/movie Qabyo by sangub, many of our people back home are hallucinated by life in the diaspora. Many feel that coming overseas is tantamount to a life of luxury, excess and to some extent a salvation. Allow me to call this the Somali disease of “Hallow soo *** â€. This disease is spreading to regions and countries that have been spared the wrath of the civil war. Take for example, the case of the NFD, Somali galbeed and countries in the Middle East. For decades, Somalis in this part of the world have managed to live in harsh environments where regimes performed genocides, confisticate property and dictate the way of life. Despite these, many Somalis were brought up to work hard, never to beg and more importantly to be active and be responsibility. Following the collapse of Somalia, it seems that the pan ultimate dream of many young Somalis as well as their parents is life in the diaspora. Quite understandable given the lack of security, work and future. In the long run of course this would lead to a brain drain. But, the degree of this disease is the manner. Gone are the days when you received a phone call where the call enquires about your health, about how you are faring in distant lands and when you will think of going back home. Instead, the dreaded phone call begins with “soo *** â€-an endless orgy of problems (many unverified)! It is not unlikely that the money you send is to finance the addiction of a qaad-munching relative . Sometimes, I suspect that he who has money to call is not that poor! What are the causes of this disease? Are we (people in the diaspora) equally responsible for sending money? For exaggerating our life styles (it is not uncommon for people to send a picture beside expensive cars, skyscrapers and a touch of boasting). Is it likely that the money we send back home might encourage passivity?

Every somali in the administration (from clerk to minister) should be tried. Qudhac, those who point the finger at Riyaale and the many officers in somaliland have a point too. Riyaale and co were part of the problem, but they also became part of the solution. There should be an inclusive strategy not an exclusion of people simply because they live in another part of somalia. FYI, I have a good friend in Sweden who comes from Hargeisa and he was in Hargeisa during the dirty war against our brothers in the north. He reports that Riyaale and co (many of them senior officials in the adm) were equally responsible. Koorojan, a senior officer in the somali army in the north currently lives in Finland. I met him on several occassions. He has now turned to religion and after friday prayers he asks those present to pray for him. I have reminded him that the only way he could get Allah's mercy is to visit Hargeisa and meet with the mothers orphaned. Korajan admits but we have thousands who have been blinded by tribalism- and I hope they come clean. Since this particular thread regarded Samatar, I wish he faces the consequence of his actions, I hope he is repatriated from wherever he is hiding- likewise, the many thugs in Nairobi, Toronto, MN, Ohion, UK should be reported.

For those of you who are trying to take a reconciliatory tone on the dark past of somalia, I do understand, but let me tell you this. Samatar was the vice president of somalia, the commander in chief of the somali armed forces- in the absence of a living president, co, it is natural that his assistant faces the wrath of justice. Samatar, Kulmiye, Laxwase, Dafle, Siad barre were part of the junta who revived somaliweyn and few years later killed it. We won't have been in this mess had they feared justice! These are the same people whose policies contributed to the slaughter of thousands of somalis, the same people who used guns, tanks and airplanes on the same civilians that they were to protect. What are you going to tell the orphaned child, the widowed woman whose loved ones were murdered? I agree samatar was not the only one. We have thousands of officers, officials, religious leaders, bandits, tribal thieves who must face the consequence for the mess somalia finds itself in. The best thing one can do for somalia/somalis is to begin a process that would land this people shame/jail! The least one can do is defend their actions1 The processes initiated in the US, Canada and Europe (soon) would be a lesson to all the warlords in Nairobi. The only regret any somali should have is that these processes are not taking place in somalia. On the other hand, forgivness is a virtue and a reconciliation process is perhaps not a bad idea. To achieve this,however, we need people (leaders)who offer public appology to their victims, somalis and the world. Unfortunately, the issue of guilt is not one that is on the agenda of the southerners. Every somali is responsible for the attrocities committed in our name. There is a polarisation of this issue; the somalis from the north should also abandon their blame game, where innocent southerners who themselves were victims of the regime are blamed!
