  1. Somalis are more than capable of bringing about peace if they stopped asking for outside assistance. There are important lessons they can learn from each other’s history of the last 20 years. We tend to disregard each other’s achievements just in case we might appear to be endorsing our “rival’s” political objectives. But Somali History can teach us a lot, just the same way the people of Mogadishu are teaching us daily about resilience in the face of unrelenting brutality and destruction. Similarly, Sayid Mohamed Abdullah Hassan taught us that we can say no to foreign aggression. Eighty years later the Somali people in Somaliland demonstrated how peace can be brought about and how entire tribes could be made to trust each other and then be disarmed. This arduous peace building process was one in which almost all the Somali tribes whether they are those who reside in Djibouti, Awdal or sanaag and in between have played a role in. It’s a valuable lesson only if we can learn how to implement those lessons amidst the chaos that’s still raging in parts of the land. The main obstacle to Somalis especially to those from the central and southern regions of Somalia is to devise a strategy to counter the unwanted outside interference. This task is even more daunting now that extremism is taking root not only in the physical sense but also in the collective psyche of the Somali masses. This documentary was funded by an international aid agency and it’s based on research conducted by the Academy for Peace and development in Hargeisa. So watch and ponder how chaos can be turned into order and how conflict can be transformed into peace. P.S. The videos are numbered wrongly in youtube, use above links.
  2. ^Indeed, time will tell. Cade Muuse wasn't a good investment but Faroole could be a bridge between Somaliland and Somalia. And in the very likely event of Somaliland getting her recognition, he can expects us to reciprocate by supporting his candidacy to lead that country and in bringing peace to our Somali brothers. That is if he stays the course..
  3. ^ lol, they could be right minus the sanka wayn ofcourse.
  4. After all, may be capitalism is a self correcting system, read on.. Thirty-eight US billionaires have pledged at least 50% of their wealth to charity through a campaign started by investor Warren Buffet and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. They include New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, CNN founder Ted Turner and entertainment executive Barry Diller. "The Giving Pledge" lists all the families and individuals who have committed to the project. The site says the pledge is a "moral commitment" not a "legal contract". The campaign was started in June to convince US billionaires to give away at least half of their fortunes either during their lifetimes or after their deaths. "We've really just started but already we've had a terrific response," Mr Buffett said in a statement. He added: "The Giving Pledge is about asking wealthy families to have important conversations about their wealth and how it will be used." Those who pledge their money to "philanthropic causes and charitable organisations" must publicly state their intention through a letter of explanation. 'Improving education' Other billionaires who have pledged large sums of their money include film producer George Lucas, philanthropist David Rockefeller and oil investor T Boone Pickens. "I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race," Mr Lucas wrote in his Giving Pledge letter. Continue reading the main story The organisation says many of the donors have committed to donating sums far greater than the 50% minimum level. "While the Giving Pledge is specifically focused on billionaires, the idea takes its inspiration from efforts in the past and at present that encourage and recognize givers of all financial means and backgrounds," says Givingpledge.org. Mr Buffet along with Mr Gates and his wife, Melinda, held numerous dinners with US billionaires in the past year to promote the campaign and urge America's financial elite to pledge. "I've long stated that I enjoy making money, and I enjoy giving it away. I like making money more, but giving it away is a close second," Mr Pickens wrote in a letter on Givingpledge.org. Mr Buffet, the chief executive of the investment firm Berkshire Hathaway, pledged 99% of his money to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and family charities in 2006. Forbes Magazine estimated Mr Buffet's wealth at $47bn (£29bn) in March. Bill Gates, who Forbes rates as the world's second wealthiest person, has also given away more than $28bn to his foundation. There are 403 billionaires living in the US, according to Forbes.

The Fugees star will officially announce his candidacy on Larry King's CNN show on Thursday, media reports say. Haiti is scheduled to elect a new leader on 28 November. The country was hit by a devastating earthquake in January which killed more than 250,000 people bbc
  6. His legacy speaks for itself and today's Mogadishu is his legacy. Allah's mercy isn't a shirt that fits everybody, you have to earn it. I'm almost tempted to paraphrase a famous Somali song: Allahyoow nin daacada Allahayoow nin daalina Naxariistada ha u simin
  7. Allah yar7am masaakiinta, waa rag caqli yar ku waa masaakiinta dhibay. The sad thing is that there are some people who are in the safety of the west witnessing the mayhem from afar yet supporting these charlatans.
  8. ^ This is a change some might one to believe in; Sheikh Kalbani is trying to be the Obama of Islam. Who would have predicted this sort of fatwa 10 years ago; this is how you know that extremism is having an adverse effect on Islam. Songs are haram in spite of what Klabani says, but many people including me listen to them regardless in the hope that their good deeds will balance the books. Sheikh Kalbani is pushing the government agenda here.
  9. Siiraanyo is a very shrewd politician; the timing of it is clever. Imagine if this happened before selecting the cabinet, Biixi's supporters would have expected more.
  10. lol @NGNO, thats why I used the word "hints", he is a politician after all, he will not mention us by name . His comment will certainly embolden those in his administration who want to change Bush’s failing strategy towards Somaliland and Somalia.

    Sacda Mire

Athaarts is arabic and I wonder if there is a Somali word for it... Dr. Sacda Mire did her PhD in UCL and is currently doing a valuable job for all Somalis. She worked with Riyale's adminstration as a Director General in the Department of Antiquities of Somaliland'S Ministry of Tourism and Culture. She is also working as a researcher in the department of Art & Archaeology of SOAS (University Of London).
  13. Shift in Strategy: President Obama suggests working with Somaliland President Barack Obama hosted in the White House a unique summit for youth and civil leaders from Africa, as part of his administration efforts to reach out to the continent. The meeting was in a town hall-style forum with more than 100 representatives of 45 Sub-Saharan nations, was also part of a series of events this week helping mark the 10th anniversary of the African Growth and Opportunity Act, enacted in 2000 with the goal of boosting African exports to the United States. In Q&A session after the president’s speech, the president was asked by Najma Ahmed Abdi, a young lady from Somalia about the crisis in her country and the role of the US government. In his answer the president explained that the Somalia situation is one of the most desperate in the continent and yet of one of the most dangerous for the US and its allies in the regions. President Obama hinted out that his administration may start working with stable parts of the country to spread democracy and offer stability to the rest of the the country. The Obama administration has supporting and funding the weak Transitional Somali Government and the African Union troops for the last three years. working with stable parts of the country will present a major shift in US policy in the country. And recently the U.S. has backed a push by African states to add troops to combat Somali militants. But many Somalia experts are warning that more troops will not bring peace, and will encounter fierce resistance from the dangerous militant group that claimed deadly twin bombings in Uganda last month. Somaliland has been hailed as a beacon of stability in the troubled Horn of Africa region since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991 unilaterally. The recent peaceful transition of power between bitterly opposing sides have added to this testament. Also the region of Puntland in North East of the country has enjoyed great stability and peaceful elections. Many Somali locals, academic and international experts have questioned US policy towards Somalia. Many experts have called for alternative strategy in Somalia. Regional reconciliation and other gradual method like development of economic interdependency of different regions and building Somali government from bottom-up instead of establishing a central government have not been fully pursued. Historically, creating a national Somali government has been the goal of many failed reconciliation summit in the past 20 years. However, the pursuit of strong Somali government exclusively through a national reconciliation process has become an obstacle itself, as many experts testify. One reason reconciliation has become elusive is the focus of these attempts on political side of the crisis only and ignoring other possible channels. Building bridges with already stable part of the country and building bottom-up government is more promising to solve the crisis in Somalia. He said: “In some cases, we may try to find a portion of the country that is relatively stable and start work there to create a model that the rest of the country can then look at and say, this is a different path than the one that we’re taking right now.” Read more: Somalilandpress

  15. It’s about music, love, travel and a short summary of his adventures in life. He is older than most Somali musicians yet his memory is very sharp, especially when it come to remembering names. It could be a side effect of his crazy life style. I will remember the following nuggets: Lacag = cag la socoto because it’s in your pocket Jacaylku waa dhab wuu jiraayoo waa dab hadii aad waydana waa jab, Waa jirjiroolo waa lab , waa boqol jaadoo waa qab wuu ku jiitaayo waa dhab hadii aad waydana waa jab. Some of things he said included a made-up hadith that says"Man lam yahuzuhu al-darab fa laysa minaa". No need to translate that one And plenty of other funny sayings, the second is funnier but they are both top quality..enjoy Part 1 Part 2
  16. ^ Indeed, it was a long wait for some justice to be served here. For sure, this was his worst day since he took this office Most of these debts are probably made up but this Xaashi guy is not falling for that, the crooks will have to settle their issues on their own. Cawil is clever thought he exhausted all the tricks in his book but he couldn't hide at the end. He is also good with PR, he knew Xaashi was going to be difficult to deal with so he decided not to allow most of the press into the office. Unlike all of the other new minsters who thanked their predecessors for their work, the new minister had no nice words to say to Cawil but thanked his staff instead.
  17. And finally, Ina Xashi catches up with Cawil to give him a much needed lesson in accountability. The main points that probably shocked Cawil were: Mudane Maxamed Xaashi wuxuu ku Nuuxnuuxsaday sida ay uga go,an tahay inuu yareeyo musuqmaasuqa isagoo sheegay inaanu marnaba yarayn karayn hadii aan shaqaalaha baahan ee mushaarku ku filayn loo kordhin , waxaanu balan qaaday in waxa ugu horeeya ee uu qabanayo ay tahay in marka hore uu shaqaalaha siiyo mushaar ku filan si baahidooda shaqaaluhu u yaraato. Wasiikra cusub wuxuu sheegay in uu u furay wasaarada maaliyada Acount cusub oo loogu ururinayo lacagta adag ,joojiyayna maanta laga bilaabo acountkii ay lahayd wasaaradu. balse uuna la wareegayn waraaqaha ay ku qoran yihiin daynta lagu leeyahay sababna uga dhigay in marka hore uu u baahan yahay in wakhti la siiyo si uu u ogaado dayn kasta meesha ay ka timid iyo cida leh iyada oo Dayn badan loogu talo galay in lagu Wareejiyo Balse uu ka hortagay Wasiirka Cusub isaga oo Gudi baadhis ku samaysa u saaray Arintaasi. here
  18. ^^Good advice for Cawke, he needs to rest instead of being like this guy
  19. Don't expect a smooth transfer between Ina Xaashi & Cawil Cawil oo ka muquurtey xil wareejinta iyo ina xaashi oo calculator la soo kalahay
  20. The key point is Badhashaabka waxuu sheegay in maanta Wasiirka arrimaha gudaha ee cusub lagu wareejiyay xafiiskiisa waxuuna ugu baaqay in shaqada ugu horeysa ee uu qabto ay noqoto inuu berito soo magacaabo Guddoomiyaha cusub ee gobalka Awdal ee isaga badali lahaa maadaama uu iscasilay, waxuuna sheegay inuu la shaqeyn doono Guddoomiyaha cusub ee gobolka loo soo magacaabo waayo aragnimadiisana ku caawin doono. here

Particularly interested in minorities. Be good to see US websites too. I used to work for the training and development agency intaanan ilbixin and they are the best people to speak to if you want to know more about teaching in the UK. They even have what they call a Teacher Advocate Programme where you can get in touch with teachers from your ethnic community if you have specific quires. Minority teachers are classed as priority candidates and there are some incentives for those who come from a refugee background Check out there website, www.tda.gov.uk Guys, there are many routes into teaching and if you are interested then a proper and early research is in order. Some of them are more interesting and financially more rewarding than the usual academic route.
  22. I spent an hour listening to him and it was time well spent even though it was meant for school kids Bilaal is boring and he is no match for Sheikh Hamza Yusuf.
