  1. Axmed Mr porn-producer, your just butthurt because she would never lay her eyes on someone like yourself. You're a dinosaur from a dying era. Someone like you supports demonic warlords and chieftains that worship Iblis Al-Shaydaan himself, and then you have the nerve to dub someone you don't know gaalo raac. Face it, you're a footsoldier of chieftains who themselves have been enslaved by the devil. Break that chain first, then come back and speak to me about religion.( and in the meantime don't send me a friendship request, freaky boy!) Taleexi, I'm not greenlighting anything (as if I have that kind of global influence). Fact is 98.5% of Somalis in the west marry one another, the other 1.5% are male/female reverts or belong to specialised professions such as science, entertainment, sports etc. If therefore you aspired to become an astronaut, there is a very slim chance that you would encounter a fellow Somali there, and so the possibility of you marrying one of your non-Somali colleagues or someone you see in that scientific environment everyday is very HIGH!

  3. MATAANO - FASHIONISTAS Ayaan and Idyl Video Interview Though born in the United States, the twin sisters spent their first nine years in pre-civil war Somalia. It was important to their mother that they learn Somali language and culture. But when the cultural climate became tense with curfews and a heavy influx of refugees, their mother brought them back to the States. They are inspired by Somali fashion in some ways. “The black look doesn’t exist in Somalia. The brighter you are the better. The peacock, the gold. Lots of perfume. Standing out. You can see that influence in the Spring 09 collection,” they say. But, you’ll still find some black in their collections because their designs are all about melding the style of two nations. Their fall collection, for instance, is much more muted with rich purples and grays. Their fall silhouettes are also much more American vintage. “We feel strongly that fashion, beauty doesn’t have a color and so we wanted to make that obvious in our clothes [so that they] really transcend all borders,” says Idyl. There’s no question that this meeting in the middle is something that they hope will help launch their brand into the global arena. With no formal training in fashion design, Ayaan and Idyl held on to their dream and their passion to create the brand they’d envisioned even as young girls. After college they moved to New York City and took internships in the fashion industry. From Jill Stuart , Ayaan learned about how to take vintage fabrics and classic forms and give them a modern edge. From Betsy Johnson , Idyl learned about design technique and color. When asked about designers they love, they gush over Carolina Herrera and Tracy Reese who they feel transcend a cultural base as well as Oscar de la Renta and Donna Karan who they say understand their woman. “We want to zero in on who the Mataano woman is and then begin to expand that concept. We see her as uptown meets downtown, east meets west, multiracial, she likes to travel.” Aside from turning to other more established designers for inspiration they also look to their own travels, visits to art museums, vintage shopping haunts, and anything that is visually inspiring. “It doesn’t have to be clothes that inspire us; it can be the structure of a table, or a particular color. You don’t want to be all over the place. You want to start with one thing and build–– Spring in bloom, bright colors, modern meets vintage with a 1920’s twist,” says Ayaan. When it comes to working together, they wouldn’t have it any other way. They find balance by relying on each other and feeding on each other’s ideas. In many ways their meeting in the middle of nations is natural for these compromising twins. Idyl says Ayaan is all about class, quality, and texture, real materials and timeless silhouettes. Ayaan says Idyl is eclectic and draws on her cutting edge attitude to take risks. Their different attitudes aren’t a hindrance to the brand, but bring the balance that they seek in their designs. As for the upcoming season Mataano predicts a more somber tone in fashion because of the current economic climate. They are looking at a lot of deep colors like wine and eggplant. Ultimately though, it’s the consumer they think has the final say. Their biggest advice as young designers to young designers is to put fear of failure aside, ask lots of questions, and take a risk. “You are your only obstacle,” they say. That’s what they’ve done and what they’ll continue to do as they take Mataano from dresses to a future lifestyle brand. http://www.gorgeousnewyork.com/featured/mataano/
  4. My 2006 topic of the same name didn't make it during SOL's switch to a new layout/server, so I'm going to restart it. Talented Somalis with global appeal. MO ALI - FILMMAKER

You shouldn't Aaliyah, your absence is immediately felt. We can tolerate 3 months, but anything more than that and we will be forced to contact Interpol lol. Salaam

Careful now, I have an uncle in Canada, my favorite uncle no less! Cross-continental marriages are really tough, something this internet-generation doesn't realise while their heartstruck with one another in different time-zones, until one of them in the relationship has to give up their entire family and friends by settling with their wife/husband in that other continent. Are you going to go "Missing in Action" for three months and then pop up randomly again like last time? LOL The only way a SOL nomad can detached themselves from the forum is when they get children and become fathers/mothers. Then they go missing for a couple of years hehe.
  7. I would love to ignore and dismiss him as a mere troll, but sadly his sentiments are held by a significant section of our community, very misygonistic in nature, but they are dying breed, atleast in the west. They will embrace Mo Farah and his Mixed-race wife, or Raage Omaar and his Scottish Baroness, but woe if a supermodel or female director does the same, no then they must be dubbed gaalo raac. SOL is the most respected Somali forum, and no doubt Idil is a member or lurks the forum occasionally. Therefore I can't allow a hate-filled character like Axmed hi-jack the spirit of this site with his sick attack, someone has to highlight the hypocrasy and counter such venom.

I don't have facebook, but I read people "poke" another lol. Hehe, the word "interesting" was processed into "marry me warya", that's the mind of a Farah I guess. btw you're right, prior to coming here I knew nothing of back home. One part wishes I was still ignorant because then I wouldn't have been following this stressful opera/circus called Somali politics, but a bigger part is happy because I'm more aware of our heritage.

Its a clear sign Aaliyah, that our stars are compatible in the hidden laws that make up the Universe, unfortunately I don't believe in the concept of polygamy otherwise I would be poking you and two other incredible sisters right now!!(I mean that facebook thingy). To many good sisters out there, yet we have clowns going to India.* *Facepalm
  10. Condolences to Idil, and the family. Axmed-ina-jaad/mr part time porn director, part time pimp, Idil is a self-made woman, if the likes of you actually upped your game that would eventually lead you to star-crowded red carpets at the Oscars & Golden Globes, you might have been picked up on her love-radar, and this tragic heartbreak could have been prevented.(not likely in your case) Instead you and your likes don't make the effort, but insult, mock [or worse] ignore the talented Somalis that have major aspirations to become directors, actors and actresses, and blackmail them with religion, culture, etc. When these talented individuals then make it big, and naturally fall in love with people that are similarly talented individuals but from other backgrounds they suddenly become "sell outs"? You can't be a sell-out to someone or something that never embraced you in the first place!

True, I reread the SOL movies club I made a couple years ago, and realized how much naivity & innocence I lost because of the politics section.
  12. Ha, I had a good reason for those name-changes, but the new SOL system doesn't allow it anymore, Chimera has been my name for a couple of months know sxb. I can't train without music because of all the distractions in the gym, so it seems to be the direct opposite of your situation. With stronglifts I thought you ment that excercise you see on olympic competitions where they pick up the bar, leave it on their chest and shoulders for a sec, and then see them push it above their heads. If higher weights don't stimulate growth, then changing your system to one of more reps and lighter weights could be the answer. You also have to have a clear vision of what you want to look like, the moment I did that, I began to see real results. Monday: Chest, Triceps Tuesday: Rest Wednesday: Shoulders Thursday: Back and Biceps Friday: Rest Saturday: Legs, abs Sunday: Rest I periodically switch between free weights and machines, and when I feel I have reached a plateau, I increase the weight, or do supersets.
  13. Archdemos food and rest are just as important as training, make sure you got all three figured out, also stop planning bro, summer is already on our doorsteps lol. Urban, try squatting, its the only single excercise that will result in you getting stronger and bigger from head to toe, because when you squat your entire body is flooded with natural anabolic hormones like growth hormone, insulin and testosterone that reach every single muscle group and in the process stimulate growth. Having the right type of music is also essential. I realised early on that nothing in my pop/R&B/Hip-hop filled Ipod really gave me that push I really needed. Today I have around 10 death metal songs that give me the kick to do one or several more reps.
  14. Hassan's brother is a professional model, and a 6'3'' 220 lb giant; Canadian sports model A.J. Jama is about as diverse a sports model there can be. The 6'3", 220 athlete played professional rugby in Europe for 4 years and in the CFL for 2 years. Since he was 18 years old, A.J.'s been modeling in Canada and he says, "I do a lot of acting, so being an actor/model is my greatest ambition." That's coming from a guy who earned his aerospace engineering degree and professionally is an aircraft systems engineer. A.J. has eight brothers and sports run in his family. "I love sport motorcycles. But it's just one of my many passions," says A.J. His youngest brother, Hassan, is an accomplished amateur bodybuilder. A.J. is represented by Take One Talent in Ottawa, Canada.

  18. Any woman surrounded by bad male role models will grow up believing that's how all men behave and that she should expect the same. Any man that contradicts this predetermined and ingrained expectation will confuse the woman, and cause her to panic, and eventually she will run from the relationship, because she's not used to being treated as a first class citizen, basically another form of self-sabotage, though not intentional. This shows you that male role models are just as important to females as they are to men. Similarly strong female role models have the same effect on males. If males grow up around women that tolerate beatings, they will eventually inflict the same on their wives and daughters because they think its normal. There are alot of strong female characters in my family, so its not a surprise really that "beating your wife/daughter" is an alien concept. I feel pity for the woman in the video, its a vicious cycle.
