  1. You edited your original post: Blackflash;864770 wrote: Hargeisa would have to have a density 1.5 times greater than NYC to have a population of 1million. I don't have to go to Hargeisa to know how ludicrous that is. I'd peg Hargeisa at 250-300 thousand and Mogadishu at 500-700 thousand. Alright, I thought you were being serious about population sizes, even 80s Mogadishu had a higher population when statistics were still being taken let alone modern Mogadishu, with the influx of people from all over the South. LA Times puts it amongst the top of the booming cities of the world, for better or worse. Mogadishu is well over the 2 million figure.
  2. I'm not convinced, I had a look at that planimeter with regards to Hargeisa and their data resembles the 2002 image, most of the city is absent. Secondly there are no rows of apartments and skyscrapers in Asmara, it's a good comparison, though Hargeisa is clearly larger in size.
  3. I think some sisters jinx themselves by becoming to anxious and fear their chance at love is slipping the moment they pass 24 y/o age. Others spend most of their time Farah bashing and there is no fairytale since the beginning of time that starts with the princess attacking every suitor that comes here way or badmouthing the friends of the suitor. If you're interested in Somali men, logic dictates you should know at least one good brother from your childhood, college, or the neighbourhood that could be a potential spouse or could direct you to someone of your type from amongst his friends. Most of this discussion however reminds me of this topic: http://www.somaliaonline.com/community/showthread.php/59576-Lychee-s-take-on-marrige..? From Farah bashing to a strange epiphany.
  4. That's absurd, because the size of the city itself in terms of km2/sqmi isn't even known. You don't have to go to Hargeisa to know its much bigger than the likes of Djibouti City and Asmara, both of which have population above the 500k: Asmara When you compare that with the Hargeisa image above, clearly the 1 million figure isn't farfetched at all, considering Somalia is a big country with a relatively small population, one can't compared that to the heavily urbanised NYC, whose metropolitan area has a bigger population than our entire country.
  5. Blackflash;864739 wrote: Our population count is one of the first things that needs to be sorted out, how can services be provided if we don't know where to provide them? Tribalism and NGO money making schemes over the last 2 decades have grossly exaggerated Somalia's population. Use plotting apps online such as planimeter to find the area of any city in Somalia and you'll be shocked. Hargeisa is about twice the size of Rexdale and we're expected to believe there are a million people living there? Same goes for Mogadishu, Las Anod, Bosaso etc. Unless we're stacking people 50 high or building secret underground cities. I'd say expect Somalia's population to be somewhere between 5-7 million. That's most likely Somalia's urban population figure, especially with the forced migration of farmers and herders into various towns and cities. Statistics on Somalia will surprise alot of people, I'm absolutely sure about this. This includes per capita income, and the size of the economy, when these are finally collected and updated. 6. 5, my opinion or taste are just that, mine. There are plenty of films I love which most of the world hates, at least you got a couple hundred million people agreeing with you. The Cinema effect can definitely add alot to an otherwise mediocre film. My first cinematic experience was 'Men in Black', I was a kid and I watched it completely by myself, with popcorn and everything.(though my sis worked at that same cinema complex) I still haven't experienced a similar feeling of wonder and joy as that cinematic episode, I guess its the universal 'first time' rule. I haven't seen any of those films yet, instead I have been catching up: The Crazies (awesome), Deja Vu( I realised I can watch anything with Washington in it), The Recruit, First Sunday(Tracy Morgan is hilarious) some Japanese/Korean films and some golden oldies like Stargate (1994) and The Rock (1996), they are all available on youtube lol. I will check the Abraham Lincoln one out, and Cabin was already on the watchlist.
  7. Lol@ King Koopa, brings back memories of the 8-bit nintendo game. BTW, Avatar was a big disappointment despite the hype. A movie that did live up to its hype is The Avengers, which blew me away and I have seen it 8 times, very rare that I'm captured by a film like that. With Avatar it felt artificial, and I have never bothered to watch it again since 2009. The 4D nonsense got everybody going.
  8. Big shock indeed, you should watch his interviews with Craig Ferguson, he was a very funny dude.
  9. Blackflash;864457 wrote: You think a lack of appreciation for the value of life is the reasoning behind family planning? I don't think family planning is the end all cure to child starvation, but I'd argue the atheists that many here choose to vilify value these children's lives more than the ' it's okay, they'll be in heaven anyway' crowd. I seriously doubt that, for one, a person that respects life wouldn't resort to cheap tactics to further an argument by posting such imagery unless to engage in shock-value. Secondly these same situations depicted in those pictures would still occur with 'family planning', because it has nothing to do with the issue at hand, which is food-security, access to healthcare and education. Family planning is like putting bandage on a festering wound. In peace-time, food-security, healthcare and education was provided by the state and logically in war-time with the erosion of infrastructure and absence of government/foreign investment all that becomes scarce. It's no co-incidence that with the recent massive reconstruction and investment by Somali returnees and foreigners that Mogadishu is quickly turning the surrounding hamlets, villages, towns and small cities into unofficial suburbs experiencing an economic revival. What Somalis need isn't family planning, its investment, stability and new markets for their products. Somalia is the most urbanised major country in East Africa, if every major city enjoyed massive investment that comes natural as a result of peace and good governance, hundreds of hamlets, villages, towns and small cities would benefit as a result and in the process you would have lifted the majority of the people out of poverty. If guerilla was honest about saving Somali children, he wouldn't sit on his high-horse in the comfortable west and try to lecture a mother or father back home about the ills of having a large family, when he completely ignores the real root of their problems which is instability. A pre-industrial country like Somalia in a pre-industrial continent like Africa needs a sizable population. Every single successful country in the world today, from the USA, UK, Sweden to Japan had large families well into their post-industrial phase, and only enjoyed a decline in the 60s, while some like the US still enjoyed baby-booms and classic big American families in that period.
  10. Pathetic, when Guerilla gets his entire argument dissected and obliterated he resorts to shock-value. Why ignore the fact that when there is no conflict the children across the country look like this?: Why ignore the fact that across the West and China where people engage in family planning, you have millions of people that are homeless or the millions of girls that were burried for their gender? I don't need to post shocking images to back my arguments they can hold their own. I'm beginning to see a pattern with atheists, not only do you guys not have respect for other people's faiths, you don't even respect the 'weak' and 'unfortunate' amongst us, and instead dismiss them as creatures that should have never been born, pathetic. Silly of me to think this was an actual discussion.

Anyway, I could go on and on but those you want to check out, thank me later. If you like foreign films you should check out THE RAID, an Indonesian film, amazing from start to finish. Imagine if all of Somalia's warlords and militia-men lived in a single flat and a small SWAT team was send after them, and you have this film.

  13. Guerilla, Somalia has enough resources to sustain a hundred million people, we are only 10 to 15 million people today. If the country were to be blessed with sincere politicians that initiated economic reforms, build the right infrastructure and maintained a stable society, then the concept of 'famine' would be a thing of the past, this however has nothing to do with the size of a family, if you had one child in a conflict zone, that child would still be at risk, one way or another. That child would still suffer hunger, miss out on education and healthcare because his/her region is in a bloody WARZONE. Consider this, Somalis always had big families and with little resources for most of their history maintained a self-sufficient society that exported its surplus to Europe and the Middle East, the concept of food-insecurity especially in the urban areas only rose with instability. If you go through historic famines, be it the Swedish, the North Korean, the Ethiopian, the Chinese, they always happened during times of dictatorships, state-collapse, bad economic reforms and war. Almost never because of 'overpopulation' or 'lack of food'. Instead the links between suppliers and consumers was cut off, or the lucrative farms were taken over or made derelict and food storage facilities looted or shut down. You can't blame a family of farmers for having five children just because a group of masked men decided to drag their region into a black-hole forcing them to flee and be on food-aid, which resulted in your entitled westernised azz being plagued by informercials, how dare they! This big family of sons and daughters were doing fine before all that crap happened and when stability returns they too will get back on their own two feet. Instead of talking about a dumb concept like 'family planning' in a country with a relatively small population compared to its neighbours and the size of its territory, focus on 'economic planning' that can lift more people out of poverty and enrich the country as a result. Family planning doesn't increase the wealth of the country, you will still have a dirt-poor family with one or two children, not to forget the elderly of our society would be f.cked now that they lost their vast network of sons, daughters and grand-children that would provide them with everything they need. This same network would provide any sick relative with the means to access healthcare, and education. Focus on 'political planning', which if cultivated the right way can result in the country having a strong foundation and stable environment. Remember before the war we had the highest literacy rates, the most deepsea ports, the biggest sports-facilities, the most modern hospitals, an elaborate road-network, the biggest merchant marine fleet,. There is no telling what level we would be at today, had we not squabled politically and went into self-destruct mode. I think where Tunisia is today is where Somalia would be if the last two decades had been one of stability. Its ridiculous that people are pointing at Somalia's population, when most of its neighbours have already passed the 40 million mark, in just thirty years, sometimes on territories much smaller and with less economic potential than Somalia. No country outside of DRC Congo in Africa can touch Somalia's combined wealth in resources, be it oil, gold, uranium, agriculture, aquaculture, renewable energy, and tourism. It's worth trillions of dollars if its handled well and for a population the size of Somalia (10/15 million) and the wider Somali world( 20/25 million) that is more than enough. You entire argument is a fallacy, you should be discussing conflict resolution, upgrading infrastructure and creating more jobs in dozens of big-money making sectors. With time the urbanization rate currently standing at 40% would rise to at-least 80% and with that comes a more educated population, a more industrialised country, better societal safety-nets that would discredit the concept of 'clan' and 'big families' through a fair tax-system and sovereign fund that benefits the average Farah and Xalimo. A more advanced economy concentrated around specific cities would also increase the cost of living and this would naturally force couples to rethink the size of their families. You're putting the cart before the horse then sprayed it with a submachine gun, what's next eugenics?

These interracial discussions are very alien to me though, I think I have only encountered one in my life, and I live in a big Somali community.
  16. ^Point is: same sh!t, different day. These marriage topics seem to be the most popular on SOL, along with politics and stuff about degeneration. While the more interesting topics are ignored. I hope this flood of old topics will make everyone sick to the stomach and get back to the good stuff.
