Mombasa Republican Council protests: Kenyan killed Continue reading the main story Related Stories Kenya's coastal rebels A protester has died during clashes between police and a group which wants independence for the Coast region around Mombasa. A member of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) died after being hit on the head by a stone thrown by a fellow protester, police say. Police fired tear gas to prevent about 100 MRC members from entering a Mombasa court. The court is hearing a challenge to a ban on the group. The MRC argues that the mainly Muslim Coastal region has been ignored by the national government in Nairobi. Prime Minister Raila Odinga this week rejected holding talks with the MRC, saying it must first drop its demands for independence. Dozens of MRC members have been arrested in recent days, local media
  3. MOMBASA (Reuters) - One person was killed in Kenya on Tuesday during a protest against the government's rule of the Mombasa coastal strip, a tourism magnet and one of the country's main foreign exchange earners. The protest came after the government banned the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), a group calling for the coastal city area to secede. More than 50 people stormed a court that was hearing a case in which the MRC has challenged the government ruling. Police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters. "I can confirm that one person died in the confrontation after the youths affiliated with the MRC stormed the law courts," said regional police chief Aggrey Adoli. Adoli said the youth died after he was hit by a stone thrown by a fellow protester. He denied reports by some protesters that police had fired live rounds. "The death of the youth was not as a result of a police bullet, but rather he died of wounds inflicted after his colleague hit him with a stone," he said. Adoli said the protesters had been warned to stay away from the court. Police made several arrests and several protesters were injured. The MRC says it wants the coastal strip, which includes Kenya's main port, to run its own affairs and accuses successive governments of doing too little to alleviate poverty.

  11. Somalia;822941 wrote: We don't trust the TFG to make such deals because they are corrupt, not only materially speaking but mentally corrupt. They are the same ones that welcomed the Ethiopian invasion with a parliament vote yet fought against them in the name of Islam only to have them come back when the president was from their tol, we were sent back 6 years because of that. And now you are telling me, as a public intellectual that I should allow these people who have no regards for the name Somalia let alone their own tol to hold in their hands the future of the Somali peninsula? in other words Somalia is not ready to open talks with Somaliland now tell me how many of the people of Somalia share these views?

  19. HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The ongoing strengthening of the national police force has made it possible for the country to sustain security. This was said by the interior minister Hon Mohamed Nuur Arale Duur during a briefing to the standing committee of the Guurti, the upper house of parliament where he also revealed that the police force will receive necessary tools from the British government and UNDP. Hon. Duur told the elders that the police force has seen an increase in the number of officers who possess diverse skills like firefighting, first aid, investigation, bomb disposal and anti-terrorism tactics that emanate from continuous training of new recruits as well as refresher courses for those already in the service. The interior minister revealed that the ministry has finalized drafting a police act that will be submitted to parliament after approval by the council of ministers. He said that the draft act once approved will provide clear guidelines on the mandate of the force, chain of command as well as operational guidelines. He told the elders that the interior ministry is further exploring avenues that will distinguish the coast guard which falls under the police chain of command but undertakes duties outside the mandate of the force. As per the security situation in the country the elders were informed that disputes that have threatened to spiral out of control in Sanaag region have been solved amicably. He said that the reconciliation teams established by his ministry have finalized all negotiations and what remains to wrap up the whole saga is the payment and exchange of blood money, thus compensate for the dead as per local customary laws.
