Pending Demarcation of the Somalo-Oromo Boundaries By Faisal A. Roble June 07 , 2012 Official news reports coming from the Somali National State of Ethiopia, Jigjiga, and carried by WardheerNews confirm that the demarcation of boundaries between the Somali and Oromia regions is entering its final phase. If handled unfairly as did happen in the past, the results of such a demarcation could negatively impact the lives and properties of Somalis living in Liiban, Afdheer, Fiiq, Shiniile, Babili and Jigjga zones. The ruling party in Oromia region, Oromo Peoples Democratic Organization (OPDO), is a member of the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and a close partner of the Tigrian Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF). The question is whether Somalis are in any position to stop the expansion of Oromia territory at the expanse of Somali inhabited districts. http://www.wardheernews.com/Articles%202012/June/07_demarcation_roble.html

Somali opens Mogadishu's first dry cleaners in decades By Mary Harper BBC News Many Somalis send their clothes by air to Kenya to get them dry cleaned Continue reading the main story Somalia - Failed State A businessman has opened a dry cleaners in Somalia's capital - the city's only one, and its first since the start of the civil war more than 20 years go. Mohamed Mahamoud Sheik decided to start it when he returned home recently to Mogadishu after years abroad. He told the BBC the city's security had improved in the last 10 months, since Islamist militants were pushed out by African Union and government forces. Mr Sheik also noticed businessmen would take suits abroad to clean them. Continue reading the main story “ Start Quote When they read 'Somali Premium Laundry', they say, 'wow, is this a real laundry?” Mohamed Mahamoud Sheik Failed state or can-do nation? "My dad, friends and people in the government were taking their clothes to be dry cleaned in Kenya," Mr Sheik said. "They either took them themselves, or gave them to friends who were flying to Nairobi. Everyone, from the president downwards, was really suffering." Somalia has had no effective central government since 1991, and has been wracked by fighting ever since - a situation that has allowed piracy and lawlessness to flourish. The Islamist al-Shabab militia, which is fighting the UN-backed interim government, still controls much of the south of the country, but since it was forced from Mogadishu, the city is coming back to life. People are going to the beach, opening restaurants, hotels and other businesses. Government guards Mr Sheik, who has a business degree from a university in Malaysia, was working at the airport in Dubai when he came upon the idea. The new dry cleaners imports most of its supplies by sea from Dubai With no experience in the cleaning industry, he spent his spare time picking up skills at a dry cleaners owned by a friend. "Setting up a laundry in Mogadishu was really difficult. The equipment is expensive, and I had to order the washer, dryer, presser and dry-cleaning machine from Dubai, the US and Italy," Mr Sheik said. Finding a suitable premises was also a problem. "Because the city is more peaceful now, everybody is running to find a place to open a business. Getting a building is really hard in Mogadishu these days because there is so much competition for space." Although most al-Shabab fighters have been driven out of Mogadishu, the city is by no means safe. Suicide and other attacks are common. Government officials have provided Mr Sheik with one guard at night and two during the day. The dry cleaners has been road-tested for a few weeks prior to the grand opening on Friday afternoon, which coincides with Mr Sheik's 24th birthday. He says people cannot quite believe their eyes when they see his sign. "When they read 'Somali Premium Laundry', they say, 'wow, is this a real laundry? Is this place open?'" Mr Sheik is aware that he will face many challenges running his business in a country that has been at war for most of his life. "It's very hard to find people in Mogadishu who know about dry cleaning. I found one man who used to work in a dry cleaners in the city more than 20 years ago, but the equipment he used was completely different." Private companies are providing reliable supplies of both water and electricity, he says. He has brought spare parts and other supplies in Dubai, and says he can easily order more, which can be shipped across the ocean in a matter of days. Mr Sheik says he will give some of his profits to a school for the blind and deaf in Mogadishu. "At this time in Mogadishu you can walk around anytime you want to. You feel safe. The explosions and the fighting have stopped. "I was a bit lonely in Dubai, and I was always worrying about my family in Mogadishu. I see myself making a life here, amongst my people." Somalia’s President urges elders to help jump-start talks with Somaliland MOGADISHU — Somalia’s transitional president Sheikh Sharif has called on the country’s elders and tribal leaders to help revive talks between Somaliland and his government. Mr. Sharif briefed the elders at a meeting in his office in the Somali capital on Friday in a bid to resume the negotiations between Mogadishu and Hargeisa – the first such since 1991. The Somali president said that it was vital to break the current diplomatic stalemate and consultation was needed in order to find a solution. He reiterated that dialogue and negotiations were the only and accurate means to resolve the Somali differences. “We need you to take constructive role in jump-starting a dialogue between the transitional federal government (TFG) and Somaliland. We will welcome all your recommendations,” he told them. Talks between the two sides was first proposed during the London Conference on Somalia in February this year. The direct talk has since stalled and Somaliland says it is largely due to the TFG’s decision to include members from Somaliland community in its negotiation team. Both Sheikh Sharif and the Somaliland President Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo nominated a team of negotiators charged with enhancing dialogues and cooperation. Somaliland formed a team of five where as the TFG nominated seven members which included two who happen to hail from regions within Somaliland territorial borders. Somaliland insisted that their (TFG) nomination was a key source of dispute and that if talks were to resume, the TFG, must form a new team. Somaliland Foreign minister Mohamed Abdullahi Omar, who was leading the Hargeisa team, accused the TFG of ‘hidden agenda’ and withdraw from the talks. Now following the recent Istanbul conference, the international community has urged both sides to be more flexible and to resume talks. Sheikh Sharif said on Friday he was willing to resume dialogue with Hargeisa and that negotiations were Meanwhile Hargeisa says it needs greater clarity about the TFG’s overall agenda and that it is always ready for talks. If talks resume, Somaliland is expected to go there with the same general demands. This would be the first direct talks between Hargeisa and Mogadishu since the collapse of Somalia’s last central government of dictator Mohamed Siad Bare in 1991.

Xafadaha (shacabka) a district of hargeysa oo dhan was destroyed. So tell me what institutions the peoples of Hargeysa inherited from the former government everything in Hargeysa today was either built by the SL govt or the by the People of Somaliland.

Che well don't blame them the ONLF is funded by the diaspora Somalis from Somali galbeed region there is no Somali State that supports their cause Military logistically financially. Its not so sure about their political objectives and how to reach those. Its not that they are not capable of securing their goals and its the not the leadership of ONLF.There might be some short expecations u want from the movement but we are talking about a rebel movement with no outside support only from Eritrea and a handful Somalis in the diaspora.
-
Because i know people from those regions some prefer to be part of Ethiopia some say we can climb the ladder all the way up to the throne in Addis. But as you said the people the majority want to be independent from Ethiopia if given the chance but the dilemma comes what to do after independence. It will be more dangerous to keep silent about the future of the region, how about a referendum to join Somalia or not can that be an option?
-
Interesting the ONLF should be clear though what to do about the region when its independent because right now they don't have a clear policy they are just fighting for their independence, but they don't know what to do next.
-
Abtigiis are you saying the masses in Galbeed do not favor an Independent O'gaden state,If they are independent its all about the historical experience of a struggle and the common identity that is about to be shaped right now. Burahadeer:D

Burahadeer they don't want to use that name because the region was never part of the former Somali republic and under the so called theoretic principle of self determination they want to use the historic name of O'gaden. Since it was called the O'gaden country in the late 19 century Burahadeer Somalia doesn't claim the Somali galbeed region as part of Somalia any more. General Siad bare signed a peace deal with the late derg dictator Mengistu haille maryam in 1988, part of the deal was that the Somali republic would never ever claim the Somali galbeed region as part of their country. And Mengistu on his turn would expel the SNM Somaliland rebels from his country. But let me tell you this the O'gaden region was under various Abyssinian EmperorsYohannes Menelik haile selassie and later on the derg and now under the TPLF.When they gain their independence i don't think they will join with Somalia fighting for independence more than 128 years and than settle with being ruled from Mogadishu. There is a whole new identity in the making the youth from those regions call themselves O'gadenis now and days. The ONLF is also very vague about the future of the region they come with stuff like we will let the people decide.
