Somaliland asserts airspace control amidst frequency jamming allegations 59 SharesFacebookFacebook messengerTwitterWhatsAppLinkedInTelegramEmail Tuesday February 20, 2024 FILE PHOTO - The General Manager of Somaliland's Civil Aviation Authority, Omar Sayid Abdilahi Aden Mogadishu (HOL) - The Somaliland government has declared success in managing its airspace, claiming effective service provision to a multitude of aircraft. However, amidst this assertion, tensions have surged as the Somaliland Aviation and Airports Authority refutes allegations of airspace disruption by the Somali government. Somaliland also alleged Somalia's civil aviation authority's involvement in the killing of one of its employees named Abdinasir Muse Dahable. Reports emerging over the weekend reveal a troubling scenario within the Mogadishu FIR, with nearly a dozen aircraft reportedly contacted by unauthorized controllers, issuing conflicting instructions. Instances of unauthorized climb and descent clearances, particularly prevalent in the northern part of Somali airspace, spotlight the ongoing political discord between Somaliland and Somalia. Despite Somaliland's lack of international recognition, both entities vie for control over the airspace. A specific incident involving an Israeli airline, El Al, on a route from Thailand to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, has raised concerns about security vulnerabilities during flights traversing the Mogadishu FIR. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) has reiterated its authority over the airspace, emphasizing its designation as the "Mogadishu Flight Information Region (FIR)" since the 1960s. Further complicating matters is the troubling revelation of frequency jamming, highlighted in a complaint lodged by the Federal Government of Somalia. Deliberate interference with critical air traffic frequencies poses a significant threat to aviation safety, violating international aviation laws and norms. The dispute over airspace control has escalated further, with Somalia actively denying access to flights bound for Hargeisa, Somaliland's capital. This includes incidents such as the denial of entry to an Ethiopian Airlines flight carrying senior officials, highlighting the diplomatic tensions surrounding the airspace issue. Amidst accusations from Somaliland of mismanagement and misuse of funds by the Mogadishu government, the airspace dispute has far-reaching consequences. Allegations range from diverting funds earmarked for airport development to failing to equip Hargeisa with necessary air traffic management equipment. The Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority (SL-CAAA) has vowed to protect its airspace, signalling a potential escalation in the conflict. With both sides claiming authority and tensions mounting, the airspace dispute threatens to disrupt regional air traffic and undermine safety measures. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders in the aviation industry must closely monitor developments and assess the implications for flight operations within the region. Somali airspace regained its Class A classification after over 30 years in January 2023. The change to Class A airspace can potentially increase traffic to as many as 600 flights daily.

u can call it names and what not and i know it iritates u but we will continue to go this path and our struggle will bear fruit in the near future . Somaliland is far from failed the only thing failed is the failed bunker that control its own territory with out or with 30.000 African union troops. All sort of publicity is good PUBLICITY. well spoken the suldaan of Hargeisa indeed -
politicans say one thing and they mean something else when he say hassan is his friend what does that even mean haha ... There are 3 things Abiye wants to secure or continue to stay in power. First is to defeat the Amhara fano militia in the Amhara region Second goal and objective is to find a way to counter the Egyptian and the whole Abay Dam Issue. And the lost one which is very important for him is the sea out let thing . Because it became an Ethiopian national obsession since Eritrea broke away in 1991 , meles used the Amhara and the gallas in the border war during the 1998 border war over badme But he illustrated the picture that they are actually fighting for assab but in order to get assab they need to remove and defeat Isias afewerki. General Abraha when he broke the Eritrean defense lines around berentu after they Bombed assap region . General Abraha wanted to go beyond and go deep into Eritrean territory and take Assap but Meles stopped him and called him back, Because Isias had thrown in the towel and accepted the Algiers Agreeement. The sea thing is a major issue for Ethiopian leaders , Abiye believes it will make him or break him and his Premiership is on the line he believes he will not be as great as Haile selassie or Menelik if he doesnt adres the sea issue for Ethiopia

Ethiopia first wanted a naval force it wanted to develop its navy forces and that is something they had as an objective, the port issue was never an issue yes they would love to have a cheaper port and there ways to solve that.. Ethiopia today does not have the resources to build a new port at all. The naval thing is not that expensive though for and they wish this to have because for security reasons since they have an issue with Egypt for the dam and all of those things. Berbera was allright so every dollar Somaliland and the UAE make the Ethiopians get 19 cent of that but they have to bring in some investment first for that to happen these things will still be discussed how to come to an agreement about that . As for the force part i do agree that was unprofessional on Abiye part but i think that was really not directed against us but against the Eritreans hence initially abiye wanted Assap but afewerki wasnt having it hence why he moved to option b . But the threat wasnt for us
