Somaliland: Country Urged to Capitalize on the Flexibility of the UK and Danish Governments User Rating: / 6 Friday, 03 May 2013 20:18 "Somaliland should encourage more partner countries to follow the lead of donors such as Denmark and the United Kingdom...." David ShinnAmb David ShinnAmb David Shinn By: Mahmud Walaleye WASHINGTON DC (Somalilandsun) – "Somalia's goal in 1960 to unite all five Somali-inhabited areas in the Horn of Africa under one flag was probably never realistic and is even less so today" This was termed by Amb David Shinn during an exclusive interview with Somalilandsun in which he also said the his take is that though the international community has been reluctant to recognize Somaliland, the governments of Denmark and the United Kingdom, in particular, are being flexible in the economic support they are giving to Somaliland while Turkey has also helped in a variety of ways. Below are the verbatim excerpts of the interview with Amb Shinn conducted by Somalilandsun's Mahmud Walaleye Recently, Somaliland president ended his visit to US, where he met both government and congress delegates as well as businessmen, how do you see this visit would enhance relation between US and Somaliland, would you got chance to meet, if yes what was discussions you had with him? Somaliland has a good reputation in the United States. Visits by its leadership to the United States and meetings with senior officials in the executive branch, Congress and business persons make a positive contribution to the relationship. I had an opportunity to meet President Silanyo in Washington on 22 April at a lunch hosted by the US think Tank, the Atlantic Council. Somaliland has been consistently making dramatic shifts for the past two 22 years. Some fair outside observers have called the rebuilding efforts and the developments that Somaliland has made for these past two decades, mostly with very little or no contribution from outside, "the miracle of Africa". Unfortunately, the UK, with a long historical link with Somaliland and rest of world, has refused to recognize this "African miracle". How do you see? I am reluctant to label any political development in Africa or elsewhere "a miracle." Good governance and peace with neighbors come after a lot of hard work AND COMPROMISE by all concerned parties. Both factors will be necessary as Somalia and Somaliland continue their dialogue. While no government has recognized diplomatically the government of Somaliland, it is my understanding that the governments of Denmark and the United Kingdom, in particular, are being flexible in the economic support they are giving to Somaliland. Turkey has also helped in a variety of ways. Somaliland and Somalia united on the basis of nationalism ideal. Since uniting all the five Somali-populated territories cannot legally and politically happen, by logical extension, the disbanded union of Somaliland and Somalia cannot be pursued legally, politically, and morally. How do you perceive? Somalia's goal in 1960 to unite all five Somali-inhabited areas in the Horn of Africa under one flag was probably never realistic and is even less so today. Djibouti, whose majority Somali population has been independent since 1977, never had any intention of joining a "Greater Somalia" and certainly does not intend to do so now. Neither Kenya nor Ethiopia has ever been inclined to allow its Somali-inhabited regions to join a "Greater Somalia." The passage of time has only hardened their resistance. This leaves only the relationship between Somaliland and Somalia and that will be determined in the coming years by the people and leaders of both Somalia and Somaliland. Lastly, how do you see Somaliland quest of international recognition be retained under current maneuvers? I don't believe recent developments have changed the reluctance of countries to extend diplomatic recognition to Somaliland. Today, it is more important for Somaliland to encourage more partner countries to follow the lead of donors such as Denmark and the United Kingdom to make assistance available on a more flexible basis. It is equally important that Somaliland continue to pursue its generally good record on building democratic rule. Reconciliation will never happen in Somalia reason why is that the elites in Somalia believe everything is fine as long as you wave the blue flag everything is fine. Also the civil war is not over as many of you think.

How did Somalia become Muslim? No one knows! I will discuss three theories.
Xaaji Xunjuf replied to Timur's topic in General
^^ There is no record that the people who lived in the region were called Somalis before Islam, we need to find out what the people in the Somali peninsula were called before islam thats one thing.. The other thing is that how did Somalis became Muslims i think in the early stage in the 7th century i think Negashi protection of the sahaba played a role in the conversion of early Somalis to the Islamic faith in the northern Part of the Somali peninsula, All that timur said played a role and the Persian influence in Mogadishu did the same. I think also Somalis before islam had Jewish and Christian believers but people seem to hide that story. -

London conference awaits 'vision to take Somalia forward'
Xaaji Xunjuf replied to NGONGE's topic in Politics
The conference will be co-chaired by Mohamud and David Cameron, the UK prime minister, and its main aim is to signal international support for Somalia as the new government sets out its vision. But in a setback to the UK, Somaliland, which broke away from Somalia in 1991, refused British entreaties to attend on the grounds that it would not have been treated as equal to the Somali government. Somali officials, however, are upbeat. Just wonderful -
Why do pseudo nationalists believe that Europeans can unite their country?. David Cameron muxu ku qaban kara hadaad xaarkaga walaqanaysid.

Kenya: 'Criminal' President Invited To UK Sky NewsSky News – 54 minutes ago Kenya: 'Criminal' President Invited To UKView Photo Kenya: 'Criminal' President Invited To UK Britian has invited a world leader who is indicted by the International Criminal Court to a conference in London next week. Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has been asked to attend a conference on Somalia on Tuesday - co-hosted by both Britain and Somalia. Mr Kenyatta, who won elections for the Kenyan presidency on March 4, is due to go on trial in July at The Hague for crimes against humanity. He stands accused of orchestrating violence in Kenya after the last presidential elections in 2007 and 2008 during which up to 1,500 died. Previously, Britain had said it has policy of only "essential contact" with anyone charged by the International Criminal Court (ICC). But now it appears to gone against its policy and to have reached out to Mr Kenyatta. A spokesman for Kenya's High Commission in Nairobi John Bradshaw said the High Commissioner had delivered a letter to Mr Kenyatta. The commission said in a statement: "Kenya plays a vital role on Somalia, having nearly 5,000 troops in Somalia, and hosting more Somali refugees than any other nation." The statement said Mr Kenyatta and High Commissioner Christian Turner also "discussed how the two countries would work together not only on the shared agendas of regional security and stability, but also prosperity and development". It added that London wanted to support Nairobi in its aims to double UK-Kenya trade. Mr Kenyatta's election was predicted to pose problems for European countries and America, which are nervous about dealing with alleged criminals against humanity. Until recently, Kenya had been considered the West's ally in the war against Islamic extremism centred in Somalia. Recent gains have been made in pushing back the al Shabaab militant group, which had come to control parts of Somalia after the US withdrawal in the late 1990s led to a power vacuum. Military victories against al Shabaab have in-part been spearheaded from Kenya, where the US has a base. Ethiopia has also played a major role. Britain is also believed to be keen to keep Kenya on side in the fight against international terrorism. In 2012, The British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK) built a new base just outside the town of Nanyuki, about 80 miles north of Nairobi. The London conference will be the first trip outside Africa for Mr Kenyatta since his election, which was held to be fraudulent by the losing candidate Raila Odinga. Uhuru, meaning freedom, is the son of Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president, who was put on trial by the ruling British colonial powers for inciting rebellion and kept in jail for seven years. After independence and Kenya being declared a republic, Jomo was promoted from interim prime minister to president. Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, who also faces trial at the ICC, have both said they will co-operate fully with the ICC. They deny the charges against them.

Xaaji Xunjuf replied to Xaaji Xunjuf's topic in Politics
The problem with the SFG is they started to early to act as a government in control of the country, President hassan has a different vision on how he sees Somalia should be reconstructed. But if you look it from hassans perspective , he wants to get the support of the wider world and in particularly IGAD and that he should be viewed sole representative of the Somali people. There is one problem Somalia is tarnished by a deadly civil war the past 22 years there is lots of grievances in the country and than there is the federalism debate and on how it should be implamented on the ground the government wants first reconciliation and than territorial control and than federal states to be established. Bal weynu eegi halkay ku danbeyso. Carafaat Somalia's government is built on stakeholders , Somalia is not halkaad adigu ka hadleysid, Somalidu waxay tidha xaq maha eeh xal ba la raba. -
