Safferz Ethiopias derg regime made officially peace with Somalia in 1988 April they restored relations before that there were no relations. Somalia dropped all of its claims to the Somali galbeed region. The WSLF was about to be officially disbanded the Afaraad brigade already united with the SNM, the 8th brigade joined the Djiboutians in diredawa. President siad bare was feeling the heat because from 1986 there were so many attacks on Siyad bares officers in from attacking in the interior Kidnapping Military officers and hijacking planes. Siyad bare had to do something. And the SNM was the only Somali rebel movement still in Ethiopia ssdf gave up in 1984. But you are right Mengistu and the derg needed peace to the Eritrean rebels in march in 1988 they completely destroyed 65% of the derg forces at the battle of Afabet in Eritrea the EPLF fighters made great victory against the derg. And they were closing in and Mengistu needed peace to and few months later the battle of shire began led by the Tigrean peoples liberation front. And in begin 1989 the SPM group of O'gaden officers started a new rebellion. Because of what President siad bare did signing a peace deal with colonel mengistu.

Enemy of Somalia general barre dropped all of Somalias claims on the Somali galbeed region in 1988 and, restored relations with the Derg regime. Some of general barre inner circles suggested to make peace with the SNM. He rejected he made peace with mengistu in the hope SNM would stop attacking his regime and drop the struggle. Wrong was he the SNM stepped up the game and by 1990 he ended up to be the mayor of Mogadishu.

Saalax;952734 wrote: What planet are you living on? The same Somalia that is trying to deny your existence and did not even apologize for its war against Somaliland between 1981-1991? As the saying goes the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Somaliland does not necessarily need the aid of other nations it can handle its own, anything that will frighten Somalia from ever trying to make the same mistake thinking it can attack Somaliland is welcome though. Salax you are viewing this from one side try to do it from the other side. First of all Ethiopia and Somalia are no longer enemies Ethiopian troops are widely accepted in Somalia as allies.Second the EPRDF government is just pressing the buttons so that hassan gives into their demands regarding the jubbaland thing. As for Somaliland and Somalia , the problem between Somalia and Somaliland is that one side still does not accept that the union between the 2 countries is over. But there are no other animosities. Having said that, Somalia as you view it does not exist. koonfurians are not united there are various entities and fiefdoms in Somalia. Koonfurians might call themselves unionists patriots but they are far from that. They cant unite Puntland cannot unite with galmudug and the 2 jubbaland admins cant agree on one admin. Your viewing Somalia as one county that no longer exists salaxow there is an SFG entity with limited control guarded by African union troops And there are other entities all pursuing their own separate foreign policy. But Somalia in the long term they will be Somalilands closest allies we just haven't reached that era yet.

malistar2012;952744 wrote: Xaaji Stop the cover up , Hargesa admin owes its dependence on Ethiopian regime , which armed Snm clan harbored them and gave them advice to break Somalia.? Not true SNM was formed in Saudi arabia with the ideology and interests of Somalilanders , and the Ethiopians never gave SNM free weapons they bought those weapons from them. Nor in the 80s did the SNM jointly attack Somalia with Ethiopia. But merely for a base and that was only between 1982 until 1988. From 1988 until 1991 SNM existed as independent entity with no support from Ethiopia or base. Independence aspirations came from Somalilanders nothing to do with Ethiopians in 1961 Somalilanders had their double feelings about the union and staged a staged a coup d'etat. Ethiopians could care less if Somaliland becomes like Puntland or stays where it is. They are protecting their own interests. In an ideal world it would have been fantastic to have the greatest relations with Somalia. But this is Somalia. so it will be very difficult.

Haatu here it is SUBJECT: ETHIOPIA MAKES CASE FOR SOMALILAND "SEMI-RECOGNITION" Classified By: Ambassador Donald Yamamoto for reasons 1.4 (b) and (d). ¶1. © On the margins of a discussion with Acting AF Assistant Secretary Phil Carter On January 30, Ethiopia Prime Minister Meles made the case for "semi-recognition" of Somaliland as a critical step necessary to enhance the international community’s ability to support Somaliland on regional security/stability and in its own domestic efforts toward democratization. Meles argued that the international community’s status quo relationship with Somaliland is untenable and that Somaliland needs a way around the issue of legal recognition to allow the international community to "recognize some authority within Somaliland with which it can engage." ¶2. © Meles accepted Acting A/S Carter’s argument that Somaliland’s internal political dynamics over the past two years have not helped their case, and agreed that the region must get back on track and hold credible elections as planned this spring. Still Meles argued that Somaliland’s democratic process cannot be sustained without some kind of interim recognition which can allow for the provision of international assistance to bolster Somaliland’s own democratic process. ¶3. © Meles noted that he has already broached the notion of an interim- or semi-recognition, along the lines of what the Palestinian Authority enjoys, with Somaliland President Kahin Riyale, and that Riyale has become increasingly receptive to the strategy. Meles argued to Carter that the next steps must be for others in the international community to help convince the Somalilanders of such an approach. Then, Somaliland needs a "good sponsor" within the African community to advance the cause. Meles suggested that Djibouti would be the best choice, and acknowledged that Ethiopia would be the worst (as the move risked only fueling detractors’ arguments that Ethiopia is bent on breaking up Somalia). Once the strategy had support among African states, Meles argued that the onus would be on the U.S. and UK to make the Somaliland semi-recognition case to the Europeans and others in the international community. http://danielberhane.com/2011/09/08/wikileaks-ethiopia-proposed-semi-recognition-for-somaliland/ Meles said the GoE is not enthusiastic about Kenya's Jubaland initiative, but is sharing intelligence with Kenya and hoping for success. In the event the initiative is not successful, the GoE has plans in place to limit the destabilizing impacts on Ethiopia. On climate change, Meles said the GoE fully supports the Copenhagen accord, but is disappointed with signs the U.S. may not support his proposed panel to monitor international financial contributions under the accord. Meles made no substantive comment on inquiries regarding the liberalization of banking and telecommunications in Ethiopia. The Ethiopians just want to pressure the president of Somalia to accept the Jubbaland declared state since IGAD is Ethiopias play ground. Somaliland doesn't need much support from Somalia, Since Somalia is not a threat to Somaliland nor is Alshabaab nor is the African union guarded government in Mogadishu. So the Ethiopians are just playing their cards instead of saying we are against the Somali government approach in Kismayo. They go on and on about Somaliland and about their relationship with Somaliland which was the same since 1996. The Ethiopians are never honest about their policies towards Somalia and Somaliland.

Saalax;952727 wrote: Let's face it Somalia is more of a threat to Somaliland, between 1981-1991 Somalia was waging war against the main ethnic group in Somaliland. We have no lost love for Somalia. Any measures to tame them if they try to get out of line again will be welcomed. Somalia might have problems with Somaliland statehood independence , but its not in the interests in our long term interests that Ethiopia becomes more powerful and have hegemony over the horn. You are talking about the short term objectives. In the long term Somalia and Somaliland must defend their economic and political interests together. And should have a common defense policy, Xabashis are not our brothers.

Xaaji, do you still have access to that wikileak cable where the Ethiopian FM was talking about the Somalis in the horn? i have few wikileaks meles zenawi talking about the various subclans in jubbaland i have wikileaks cable where Meles zenawi suggested that semi recognition for Somaliland should be considered. Never trust what the Ethiopians say because they are never honest especially the TPLF guys.

But the Ethiopians or the TPLF are not politically honest in here, there is no threat coming from Somalia. So why is this needed. I suppose this has something to do with the IGAD project in Kismayo. Ethiopia has been very neutral on Kismayo affairs. But it would love to see an autonomous jubbaland free out of the influence of the Somali government but they cant say it out loud. So their prime minister says that he would support SL against a Somalia threat. But there is no threat coming from Somalia. Xabashidu balayay hurinayan..

^^ Oodweyne you are right he needs to be dethroned but not just for his outbursts but because he does not even these days represent his sub clan if you compare him to his grandfather Sultan Diiriye the legendary sultan who was a dignified sultan with lots of honer and prestige. But its seems his descendant didn't inherit those great characteristics.
