  2. Ethiopian troops reportedly seize airports in Somalia's Gedo region as tensions rise 88 SharesFacebookFacebook messengerTwitterWhatsAppLinkedInTelegramPhoneEmail Tuesday September 10, 2024 FILE PHOTO Mogadishu (HOL) — Ethiopian forces have reportedly taken control of key airports in Somalia's Gedo region, including Luuq, Dolow, and Bardhere, amid rising tensions following reports that the Somali federal government plans to deploy Egyptian troops near the Ethiopian border. The deployment of Ethiopian forces has sparked concern among local militia groups, who are reportedly mobilizing in response. This escalation comes as Ethiopian troops are scheduled to withdraw from Somalia by December 2024, when the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) is set to expire. Plans are currently underway for a new AU-led peacekeeping mission to replace ATMIS. Notably, Somalia has signaled that it will not include Ethiopian forces in the new mission, opting instead for Egyptian involvement. Tensions between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa have worsened since Ethiopia struck a controversial deal in January with Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia. The agreement grants Ethiopia access to Somaliland's coastline, including the potential establishment of a naval base. Somalia, which considers Somaliland part of its territory, condemned the deal as a violation of its sovereignty.

  8. It is indeed perplexing and very strange to say the least, that amidst Ethiopia's current turmoil and infighting , where the ONLF now entered into an agreement with Abiy Ahmed only to be deceived, with none of the terms honoured by the Ethiopian govt , the situation has deteriorated to such an extent. Ethiopia finds itself in a period of profound instability on all corners , with the OLA and Fano engaged in conflict Tigray divided into two factions . This would seemingly be an opportune moment to consider opening another front. However, it appears that the leadership at the ONLF headquarters may either lack the necessary acumen or the resolve to take decisive action, this is the time attack. I mean how can you trust the Gallas how is that even possible.

  12. Ethiopian military commanders arrive in Jigjiga for command forces anniversary, inaugurate training center 119 SharesFacebookFacebook messengerTwitterWhatsAppLinkedInTelegramPhoneEmail Thursday September 5, 2024 Jigjiga (HOL) — Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) Commander Field Marshal Birhanu Jula and his deputy, General Abebaw Taddese, arrived in Jigjiga, the capital of Ethiopia's Somali regional state, on Thursday. The delegation was welcomed at the Jigjiga airport by Somali regional state President Mustafe Cagjar, Security Leader Dayib Ahmednur, and other local officials. The high-ranking military officials are in Jigjiga to participate in the 47th anniversary celebrations of the eastern Ethiopian command forces, marking the first time the event will be held in Jigjiga. According to local media, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula will also inaugurate a new training center at the Garab'ase camp, located on the outskirts of the town. The visit comes at a time of heightened tension in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia has recently deployed armored vehicles and hundreds of troops to its border with Somalia, following the delivery of Egyptian weapons to Somalia under a new defense agreement. The growing regional discord follows Ethiopia's signing of a preliminary agreement with Somaliland, a breakaway region of Somalia. The deal, which leases coastal land in Somaliland in exchange for potential recognition of its independence, has drawn strong objections from Somalia and strengthened ties between Somalia and Egypt. Egypt fears that Ethiopia's continued filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile River will reduce the water supply to Egypt and Sudan, exacerbating regional tensions.
