    Nayaaa!

Salaama Alaikum lol mizz, didn't realise you had such a violent streak in ya lakkad very intelligent answers...I knew there was a reason why i liked you lol I take it am the only one here, but when I was a kid, hooyo used to call me waryaa lol, so I grew up thinking that all girls were waryaas and all boys naayaas lol big mistake! One day I was at my abtis house, out of all my cousins (5), I was the youngest and they used to beat the shid out of me all the time. Anyways my cousin (male, 3yrs older then me) must have finished his ice cream first and when his dad wasn't looking snatched mine right out of my hands...lol being 6 I started crying, and my uncle was like amuus abti, don't worry i'll get you another one...my uncle walked out of the room and my cousin started laughing at me, saying "naayaa your such a cry baby" lol I took the naaya as an insult, cuz i thought he was referring to my tomboyish nature, next thing I knew I just grabbed the fork that was lying on the floor, shouted "am not the naayaa, you are" at him and threw it right at his forehead (except it wasn't so funny, cuz all abti heard was me saying naayaa then saw his son starting to bleed). Lol it was such a bull's eye (13yrs on the scar is still visable), I was beaten more beacause of calling my cousin a naayaa, rather then actually throwing the fork...which I never understood till i grew older. But as all have already said, its ok when a sister says it, but not a guy...but then again I never use the word naayaa, I always say "naa". lol you guys heard of the phrase "shuume ii naagesate, narta ka nikniiki"? Or is that just me and my weird family again? Ma'salaama
  3. Salaama Alaikum I think everyone worries about their university?s ranking at one point or another. But I must say for me, it wasn't the number one reason...I don't know why but when I was first applying to uni, I just wanted to get as far away as possible from London, my choices included Edinburgh, Anglia, Manchester, Leeds and University College London (the only school I applied to in London to please hooyo, even though i told her I would go outside of the city). My first choice uni was Manchester, but it was nearly a five-hour drive from my house. I loved everything about it, lots of different ppl, the libraries were beautiful, they had huge labs and a few museums all in the campus, hooyo liked it, but being the youngest child I could tell she wasn't too happy about me leaving, even though she was going to let me move out...lol Edinburgh my second choice...it was beautiful too, but a plane ride away (went to stay with a cousin who goes there). I got accepted into all the unis I applied to; but as September drew closer I realised that I couldn't move that far away from London (lol am still ciyaal mamo), so in August, I got into clearing alhumdullilah, but I had left it too late so I couldn't get into UCL so I had to settle for the closest uni to London. its not so bad, 2 and a half hours train ride from home (1.5hrs drive). Its not as "prestigious" as my other choices were, but am happy alhumdullilah, am getting top grades (alhumdullilah), I've learnt that if you put the work in, you get results, no matter where you go. My friends that went to such universities as School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) and the London School of Economics (LSE) aren't very happy with the way things were going and one girl changed from SOAS to another less "prestigious" university, not because she couldn't get the grades (MashaAllah she is an intelligent sister), but because it simply wasn't right for her. Going to the most prestigious university may mean you might get a better education then others, but it doesn't necessarily guarantee you the best environment for studying...and I can assure you, being away from home, I've learnt that it's very important to feel comfortable in your surroundings, but most importantly it's what you do with your time that actually makes the difference. Ma'Salaama
  4. mac mac kulaha, am not that cheap...think of something else *walks out feeling even more insulted*
  5. Salaama Alaikum Am glad to see am not the only person obsessed with chicken, am sure all my UK nomads will agree when I say Nandos is just the best Of course there is also sharwaames (excuse the spelling), best place to go for that Edgware Road (Beirut Express) or that little place in Sherperds Bush...its so small you can easily miss it...my friends and I are the few that have discovered it i think... Ma'salaama
  6. Salaama Alaikum -where you from? I always find that to be a loaded question, a couple of days ago someone asked me where you from and I said Somalia, he said, oh that explains the accent  , but I don't have a Somali accent (I've only been to Somalia 3mts outta my whole entire life), I don't have a british accent either...am just a confused nomad for that matter. - Your sex Female - Occupation (you can lie about this if you like) Am an extremely broke student (my pm is now accepting donations from fellow nomads) - What you do when you think people aren't looking? Take pictures of my unsuspecting friends and then blackmail them oh and talk to myself (this scares my mother) and occassionaly make monkey noises - Favorite music R&B mostly, some Italian I've now discovered Spanish and oh yeah reer xamar music (thanks to qaxooti kombuter heshay lol) - General interests, etc. Like Sue, am a scienctist and I enjoy reading science journals too, watching documentaries except now I don't own a tv (damn tv licence ppl), history books (a new interest) and poetry. Xu and NGONGE wlc to the SOL family and hope you enjoy your stay Ma'Salaama

    i HATE....

Salaama Alaikum Originally posted by chubacka: * losing my glasses, i have to walk around blind for half the day while me poor mom helps me look! THAT HAS GOT TO BE THE MOST ANNOYING THING !!!! especially when you can't even find the spare ones, and you have been looking around for ages and you have them on top of your head or somewhere extremely obvious...Except now hooyo isn't around to help me look for them I also hate when someone sits next to me on the bus when there are so many other seats avaliable. I hate it when someone just randomly starts talking to me on the street when am having a bad day (I don't know why but I always get ppl [men, women] saying hello, how you doing to me even though I've never seen them before), old people and little kids aren't too bad. I hate rush hour. As someone else already said, I HATE BEING BROKE!! I hate ppl that stare. I hate it when I turn around and I realise am the only muslim/black person in class/cinema/resturants or anywhere else for that matter. I hate being away from home (london), but I can't stand it when am there. and as mizz unique already said, I hate working really hard on a test and not getting the grade I deserve. lol I could go on and on, but I'll stop here Ma'salaama
  8. Salaama Alaikum lol Q finally you working towards your sharci to SOL Now I see why you were rushing me off the phone last night. Cosa altro poso dire...una volta qaxooti, sempre qaxooti *camminando, sentendo insultata*

  12. Asalaama Alaikum I recieved this in an email and thought I'd share...enjoy  I came to eat dinner in my halls of residence one day last year when two sisters started laughing at me; I had some food stuck in my beard. They went on to innocently and honestly mock my beard saying it was messy, unnatural and I came to eat dinner in my halls of residence one day last year when two sisters started laughing at me; I had some food stuck in my beard. They went on to innocently and honestly mock my beard saying it was messy, unnatural and unhygienic. Little did they know the rage that I felt as a result of this and I channeled this rage by unleashing my anger through my pen and out came this poem. "Glorified be He who beautifies women with long locks of hair And Men with long beards There is beauty in the beard Aye, there is beauty in the beard! When the lion roars all the animals submit For the lion is the king of the jungle The lion with its glorious mane And a Muslim man grows his mane in pride Showing the rest of humanity that he is to be respected Can one imagine a lion without its mane? Nay, thou canst not! Then imagine a man without his beard Woe to worldly women who mock the beards so! Desiring husbands with clean shaven faces Woe to women who mock the Prophets Sunnah In the name of hygiene, neatness and smooth texture Indeed the women of this world cannot like the beard But she who wants Paradise adores the beard! A beard is a gift given to man Something only he can grow; a woman never can! When he ponders, he gently strokes it; When he walks, it is clear he is a man. When he is with kids, they play with it adoringly; When he is with his wife, she fondles it lovingly; When the enemy see it, fear is struck in their hearts! Ah! there is indeed beauty in the beard! All the Prophets had beards - yes they did! Muhammad had a beard - so big! so big! All the companions had beards - o yes! o yes! All the sages had beards - I know! I know! All the wise have beards - tis true! tis true! All the pious have beards - you see! you see! All the Muslims have beards!? - if only! if only! Who did not have beards? The kafirun! Who had clean shaven faces? The kafirun! Who grew their moustaches? The kafirun! "And what did our Prophet order?" I here you ask He ordered us to lengthen the beard and trim the moustache! Lengthen the beard and trim the moustache! What greater reason that this can there be The fact that our Prophet told us to see That we make ourselves appear to the world As full bearded men with honour untold O Muslim brother! Why do you desire to look like a woman When your blessed facial hair is the differece between you and the opposite gender? O poor Muslim brother! Why do you imitate the kafir Instead of following the Prophet of Islam? O silly Muslim sister! Why are you so blind? Infatuated with Bollywood actors who have no mind! O wretched sister! Are you not scared of your choice? You would rather have a feminine monkey instead of an exalted manly ape! So indeed I love my beard And adore the curls and tangles Which no oil, gel or superglue can ever straighten My glorious long, curly, 'messy', fluffy beard! The playhouse for kids; The pride of a man; And the beloved of Allah! I maybe rejected by worldly women because of this hair on my face But who care! For my Mum loves it and she puts all such sisters to disgrace! Be patient Muslim brothers, who shun the trendy look for a Prophetic pose Paradise with the wide eyed Houris is our final abode!!!!!" Chew On This

Asalaama Alaikum Ameenah sis who said they skip school to go to marfish? In London waa la iil bahay (excuse the spelling), now its just eaten in school & in exams (this one girl was eating jaad during our gcses, when the teacher asked her what she was eating, she responded by saying, "miss, its a Somali salad") . But as DnD said everything is ok in "moderation", but sadly the Somali people don't know the meaning of the word.
  14. Asalaama Alaikum Originally posted by Mujahid: 1. What course are you doing and why? Am in my first year doing Genetics with a minor in Forensic Science. I didn't feel like I was ready to go into medicine (like the family wanted). Genetics to me is the most interesting part of Biology so I went for it. 2. How are you funding it? Student Loan & bursary. 3. What are the general academic entry requirements? I think it was an ABB (minimum of a B in Biology A Level, AS/A Level Chemistry appreciated) 4. What is the work load like? This semester for the Genetics side, we do lab work three times a week (which I enjoy, I prefer the practicals to the lectures). Some of the write up's are assessed, some aren't, but we are expected to keep laboratory books. It's one thing to see experiments done in books, but a completely different when you do it for yourself. We have the occasional presentations (which I don't particularly enjoy). There is a lot of chemistry involved in Forensic side, so it helps a lot by having done AS or A level chemistry. Lol for those who watch CSI...that isn't the way it works in real life . Now when am home and I see one of the shows I find myself always saying "this is what they're supposed to be doing" or "they aren't supposed to do that" etc. Paying attention to detail is of the utmost importance e.g. today we had to analyse a biro pen found at a "crime scene" supposedly belonging to the "suspect". I never knew I could stare at a biro pen for so long (it took an hour  ).Oh yeah, there are some law modules involved too, which are pretty interesting. Hope that helped...Ma'salaama

  16. Asalaama Alaikum I've spent the past two years asking myself that very question...especially when I saw kids as young as 14 eating jaad and arguing about qabiil...countless of times I have shaken my head in dismay at college when I saw the amount of hate/contempt they had for ppl from other tribes was unbelievable But as the others have mentioned there are a lot of success stories too and in the mean time all we can do is pray to Allah swt to guide our lost brothers/sisters and restore our homeland to the glory it once had... 17. Asalaama Alaikum As Ameenah said, making duah is the best method (along with the studying of course ). I have some duah's to help you with studying, insha Allah I'll post them when I have more time. But I do find it best to summarise my notes onto cards...or reduce a whole years notes into two sides of A4 and just keep reading it again and again and taking it with me if I was going on a long bus journey or something... Middle of the night is best too (at least for me) there is no one there to disturb or distract you...back at home everyone was always up by 5 or 6am But there were some subjects I could never revise for, did anyone have that problem??? Like with English...I don't think I actually did any revision at all in high school and in college i did English lit...only thing I did was just read a lot of books...but no actual sitting down and making notes and stuff  maybe its just me...
