Its great to see the humble efforts of Prof.Gandi and others who have worked tirelessley for this project are achieving result despite some big hurdles being thrown there way. Prof.Gandi is the man who was politically executed three times for being a patriot.He is a victim of the TFG's incompetence and corruption which he could not tolerate. Ethiopian Opposition Leader Birtukan Released From Prison After Two Years Ethiopian opposition leader Birtukan Mideksa was freed from prison today after the government granted her request to be pardoned from a life sentence she began serving almost two years ago. “I’m very pleased to be back with my family,” Birtukan, 36, said in an interview at her house in Addis Ababa, the capital. “I’ve been relieved from a difficult situation. The first five months in solitary confinement were very difficult.” Birtukan was one of the leaders of the now dissolved Coalition for Unity and Democracy, an alliance of opposition parties that claimed victory in Ethiopia’s disputed 2005 elections. She and dozens of other opposition politicians, journalists and activists were jailed in the aftermath of that vote, during which government security forces killed at least 193 protesters. Birtukan was jailed for life on Dec. 29, 2008, after a dispute with the government over a pardon agreement that freed her from prison in 2007. Amnesty International, the London-based human-rights group, described her as a prisoner of conscience, according to its website. Ethiopia is Africa’s biggest coffee producer and the continent’s second-most populous nation, after Nigeria. The Horn of Africa nation’s economy has grown more than 9 percent annually since 2004 and is forecast to expand 9.7 percent this year, according to the African Development Bank’s website. Pardon Request Shimeles Kemal, a government spokesman, said Birtukan submitted a request for a pardon at the beginning of September. “She wrote a statement asking to be pardoned on the grounds that she regretted what she did in the past,” Shimeles said in a phone interview. Merara Gudina said the new cabinet enables the prime minister to consolidate what he called his already enormous powers. “Very little is new about the reshuffle. I think the prime minister moved some people around, moved some people up and moved some people down. But, it is from the same pool of half-baked cadres. No giant intellectuals joined the government. Really there is nothing new about what is happening,” he said. Analysts say Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin was the highest profile of the ruling party members not to be named in the new cabinet. The others include Deputy Prime Minister Addisu Legesse and Trade and Industry minister Girma Birru. Meles, in power since 1991, was sworn in as prime minister by parliament on Monday after a disputed May 23 vote gave his Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and allies 545 seats in the 547-seat parliament. Demands by opposition parties for a rerun were rejected by the Horn of Africa nation's electoral board and by its Supreme Court. The most high-profile cabinet change was the retirement of Foreign Minister Seyoum Mesfin, who had been in the post for 19 years. He was replaced by former government whip and advisor to the prime minister, Hailemariam Desalegn, seen as a Meles loyalist. Hailemariam will also serve as Deputy Prime Minister. I think its naive to believe ONLF is an obstacle to development when they have set out the requirements for a peace process to occur.Its clearly the TPLF regime which does not want to embrace peace.The peace deals I think have been established to be nothing short of bogus and it would be totally delusional to think that the so-called peace deal was an ingredient for the few development projects that are taking place around the region.They were groups that yielded no political or military strength and it was convenient for Meles to exploit them for his political purposes as he knew they were in no position to pressure him to change his policies in the Somali region.If that was the case, the organisation to talk to waits for his response to the proposition for a peace deal in a neutral country. Political and Human rights are a pre-requisite to every societies peace and progress.If Ethiopia continues the brutal politics of Totalitarianism then the Somali region will not change for the better.
