From: Riham Barghouti Subject: Ramallah under siege? Date: Thu, 28 Mar 2002 12:10:03 +0200 Dear Friends, Usually we are not informed a priori of what the Israeli government plans to do with us. However, today informing us is apparently part of their terror campaign. I am now at the University but we will probably be leaving early as all Palestinian governmental agencies have evacuated their office and internationals in the Ramallah area have been told to leave the area immediately. Reports are rampant, breaking news that there is a planned incursion, occupation, total destruction... who knows of Ramallah and so we have to act and act quickly. I am generally a calm person who deals well under pressure. From the instance we received the news we have printing documents, saving others on floppy diskettes, sending ourselves emails with attachments in order to ensure that we can carry out some activities from our houses if need be. As I save my documents and collect my papers and try to maintain this outward calm, my stomach is turning, my fingers are shaking and thoughts are swirling through my head. Thousands of students are walking around the campus trying to figure out what is going to happen. Faculty and staff are calling to see what we are going to do. Family members are asking about our safety and trying to get provisions for what seems will be a long stay at home and everyone is wondering what are the "smart measures" that Sharon intends. I think this is part of it. The fear that is within each of us, the terror of not knowing, not being able to plan or make a decision is part of this process. There are too many indicators that this is not a false alarm. If this is not terror than I don't know what is and I don't know what more we can say or do. I don't mean to worry you, just inform you of what we are going through and ask you to inform others. Finally, while I hope to continue to be in touch via email, please keep in mind that I may be out of touch for a while. Hopefully, Sharon's terror campaign will end with just this threat. Hopefully, we will be able to come to the University on Saturday and all these files we saved will not be necessary. Hopefully, some day the world will wake up and say what is happening is wrong and we will be able to keep working and studying and moving freely with no constraints and no fear. Wishing you all the best, Riham Barghouti External Relations Officer Birzeit University Birzeit, West Bank Palestine Tel: + 972 2 298 2131 Fax: + 972 2 281 0656 Email: rbarghouti@birzeit.edu www.birzeit.edu

I haven't read your thread before but i feel offended by your utter disrespect for the Somali males. It is understandable to describe someone stupid or foolish but calling most of us "bulaacad" shows how weak hearted you are with your perception a being a Somali girl. If loneliness has shown you another path then thats a different matter. Hibo, you siund so bitter and disgusted by people whom you haven't had any relationship with, but i wonder what your words will when you get involved with a Somali man and find out that you were wrng to judge them by the way they stare at you in restaurants. I suppose you haven;t had any close encounter with Somalis before, as it is clear from what you told us in one of your posts, so i suggest you do alot of socialisation in the right way. I am 100% sure that the Somali males you've seen expect those from you family are those ones you've seen in the fadhi-ku-dirirka maqaayadaha. Girl, please dont jump to conclussion, dont be disgusted with us men. we will respect you if you've respected yourself. shame on you [This message has been edited by MrJibriiL (edited 04-04-2002).]

My assumption is our culture is not as deeply rooted as the cultures of other societies. Maybe our parents didn't emphasize enough on retaining the traditions. To me it seems like, the more the yrs accrue, the more components we loose of our culture. I can't seem to find any cause as to why this happens but certainly its there. I see it around me.. n I feel it inside me, but yet I can't touch base with it. Its indeed sad. ------------------ Each one of us is a masterpiece in progress

I think it’s about time we redressed the topic.... What exactly is venting off room? Is it bashing Somalis or is it things that you think aren’t right and should be corrected? I would like to think that this is a debate about what pisses you off about certain Somali folks and not the whole Somali Community. First of all I think its wrong to generalise remember not everyone has been part of your experiences and not everyone is dirty; stinks and not all the sisters and brothers are bad. I just want to suggest that if you have certain specific stories to tell about the people you have encountered in your life who happened to disappoint the hell out of you then that would have been abetter approach. We would all laugh/cry about it and ofcouse enjoy every minute of it. Seems to me that there is a lot of anger among “US” its not right to condemn all and its certainly not right to regurgitate what you cant substantiate. Oh by the way two things that really peeve me off are:- -My uncle snoring like crazy in the middle of the night and being unable to whack him…J -People who spit around and who go grrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrr paaaaaatt….without consideration. ------------------ ("`-''-/").___..--''"`-._ `6_ 6 ) `-. It seems no one is reading the tittle of the topic,...folks...the topic is vent room.... vent means "nafisaad".. neefta hagu dhajinina neefta bacniigala xiryee! Soomali waa u raayaan, waa fiiro badan yihiin, wax kasto oo xune waa leenahay..balse weli soomali aan sheeganaa...so safe ur defense for the anijabi...we r all somalis... peace... anyone who wants to vent help urself..anyone who wants to give lectures, the door is open!!! no offense n disrespect...just speak ur mind...n VENT!! ------------------ Each one of us is a masterpiece in progress

Isii-sisinta: Don't mean to dress you down, but I find your approach on the subject rather unethical -- calling your own kind 'Dhuuso+Bulacad' is not justifiable. A little 'political correctness' on your part would perhaps get me loosen up. Is it so hard to get through life without taking a strong attempt to change a culture, or how one behaves? 'Old habbits are hard to change' as they say -- Get on over with It. God Bless. ------------------ Live today to the fullest because tomorrow is not promised".

Raula: Even u!!.. what was with ur complaints than...mise online u r raula...n in mpls...u r F...lol... anyways u know what we r saying is right.... No one in here is not claiming to being somali...we all r somali...but than we gotta address soem of the issues we have...that is it!! ------------------ Each one of us is a masterpiece in progress
