Charitable agencies push for B.C. residents to help drought-stricken Somalia British Columbia’s charitable groups are pushing for donations to aid drought-stricken East Africa as a deadline looms for matching funds from the federal government. So far, B.C. is the third most generous province in Canada when it comes to contributing to relief efforts to the region. The massive drought is affecting 12.4 million people, according to the United Nations, with the most serious famine situation in Somalia. Also affected are Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda — other countries in the so-called Horn of Africa. According to the statement aired at the web-page of Prime Ministry Press Center, all the people of the region, mainly Somalia. Turkey's prime minister on Friday issued a circular letter to launch an aid campaign for Somalia and other African countries that face danger of hunger. According to the statement aired at the web-page of Prime Ministry Press Center, all the people of the region, mainly Somalia, were face to face with human tragedy because of famine, drought and hunger in east of African continent. The statement said this situation in the region caused epidemics and deaths and that people were trying to survive desperately, "it is difficult for the countries to fight against such kind of a disaster on their own. Action should be taken without losing time for humanitarian assistance. Turkish Republic will extend any necessary assistance and support for Somalia and other African countries that face danger of hunger. Launching an aid campaign is considered as appropriate accordingly," the statement said. "In addition to the efforts of the Turkish government to assist friendly peoples who are suffering because of hunger and drought, many other private initiatives are underway to assist those countries. An effective cooperation and coordination is necessary to carry out the works properly. Prime Ministry Disaster and Emergency Management will fulfill this mission." On Monday, Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Turkish state organs and civil society organizations made a call on the Turks to extend support to Africa, a continent where more than 40 million people face starvation. Various aid campaigns began in Turkey to help the starved people of Africa especially those in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Eritrea, Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi. An aid campaign initiated by the Turkish Directorate General of Religious Affairs involves sending SMS in return for 5 Turkish liras (TL) by writing the message "AFRICA" to all operators. The Turkish Aid Society Red Crescent will send aid materials, including food items, water and cleaning materials, to Africa this coming weekend. The Foundation For Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief (IHH) will send an aid ship to Africa with 3,000 tonnes of emergency materials, including corn, flour, liquid oil, sugar, milk powder, biscuits, rice and pasta. Dozens of Turkish NGOs have also initiated aid campaigns for Africans this Ramadan. AA

The Somali National Army, with the support of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), has today succeeded in liberating the Somali capital from Al Qaeda-linked extremist insurgents. The extremists were forced to retreat from Mogadishu overnight, following operations launched earlier in the week by the Somali National Army (SNA) and AMISOM with the aim of eliminating the threat they posed to humanitarian aid deliveries. A failed counteroffensive yesterday seems to have precipitated their retreat and they are now reported to be far as 100km away from the city. Congratulating the SNA, Prime Minister Dr Abdiweli Mohamed Ali said it was a great achievement for the Somali people and a big step towards defeating the extremists. “We have been dreaming of this day for the last three years,” he said. “This is a big day, and a tremendous step forward, towards a more stable Somalia. B their actions in the past hours the extremists have shown that they never had a place in a peaceful Somalia, that they are foreign and motivated by a violent ideology. And the people do not want them here.” He said that the Transitional Federal Government was moving to secure the abandoned areas and to assess the needs of the populations there with the aim of providing humanitarian supplies. “The insurgency and the violence they impose on the people of Somalia is a fundamental cause of the famine we are suffering. There is now an opportunity to give the international community the necessary confidence and assurance to ramp up its provision of humanitarian aid to Mogadishu.” The city’s liberation is the culmination of a series of operations conducted by the SNA and AMISOM in Mogadishu beginning April 2011. The extremists had been steadily losing ground in the city since then. Just last week, the SNA and AMISOM were on the verge of encircling Bakara Market, an insurgent stronghold and vital source of revenue from illegal taxes imposed on traders. - END -

For Immediate Release PRESS RELEASE 014/2011 Saturday, August 06, 2011 Nairobi, Kenya - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Dr. Augustine Mahiga, has welcomed the news that Al-Shabaab insurgent elements have begun to leave Mogadishu and have already vacated key strategic points throughout the city, including Baakara Market. “I am very pleased to learn of the progress made over the last several days on the security situation in Mogadishu. There is no doubt that the departure of Al-Shabaab would be a positive development and a step in the right direction for a city that has seen so much misery and devastation.” Dr. Mahiga said, “But as we look forward, it is important that we acknowledge that real security risks, including from terrorist attacks, remain and must not be underestimated.” Tens of thousands of Somalis have perished as a result of the crisis, almost half of whom are under five years of age. “The immediate priority must now be to focus on the humanitarian situation and I call on all parties, from the donor community to all parts of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), to do everything possible to ensure and facilitate the immediate delivery of assistance to those most in need.” Dr. Mahiga stated. The SRSG also called on the TFG use this opportunity to guarantee the security of its population and do everything in its power to assist and protect the civilian population. Dr. Mahiga reminded all armed groups of the appeal of the Security Council, expressed in the Presidential Statement of 11 May 2011, to lay down their arms and join the peace process, which is ultimately the key to long term stability in Somalia.

Al-Shabab Lost Strategic Frontlines Pulling Out OF Mogadishu Hiiraan Online Saturday, August 06, 2011 Somalia’s Islamist opposition fighters Al-Shabaab on Friday night withdrew its militants from the restive capital Mogadishu following intense artillery shelling from forces of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia (TFG) backed by the African Union peace keeping mission to Somalia (AMISOM) Al-Shabab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage told Radio Andulus “the voice of the islamists” that their militants are out of Mogadishu as part of their own military strategy. "The reason why we moved our forces out is to change our military and battle tactics. We have also moved out in a bid to safe the lives of troubled residents” Rage told Radio Andulus “But in the next few hours we will conduct a wave of military battles to wipe out AMISOM and TFG forces” The Group spokesman confirmed that AMISOM have used intense tactics and one of their heaviest military powers ever, consequently forcing the pull-out of the ranks and files of the self-proclaimed Mujahideen. As of Saturday morning TFG forces backed by AMISOM directly controlled the strategic Bakara Market in the heart of the war-ravaged capital, and also major avenues including Sodonka, Warshadaha among others.TFG forces were also seen patrolling Mogadishu’s main football stadium formerly a stomping ground for Al-Shabab militants. Sources told Hiiraan Online (HOL) that government forces are pursuing Islamist fighters who were heading to other parts of Southern Somalia. Our reliable sources added that the militants were heading towards the two regions of Shabelle where the group consolidates its power firmly. Al-shabab have been controlling large parts of South-central Somalia for the last two years including Mogadishu which is the provincial headquarters of Somalia’s’ Banadir region. The group has over the past few weeks lost their strategic frontlines following an onslaught of military activities where both the TFG and AMISOM have tested the tenacity of the Islamist opposition who have vowed to conduct a wave of attacks during the holy month of Ramadan. Mogadishu’s residents were seen thronging out of their homes stunned by the sudden ouster of Alshabab from its frontlines. In the villages of Suuqaholaha in the district of Huriwaa hundreds of residents came out but they were yet to celebrate the change of power fearing any reprisal from Al-shabab fighters. Islamist rebel fighters are pulling out of the Somali capital of Mogadishu, government and rebel spokesmen said. Abdirahman Omar Osman, a government spokesman, said on Saturday that al-Shabab was retreating from the city, calling it a "golden victory for the Somali people". He said government forces have begun deploying cautiously in the pockets of the city previously under al-Shabab control. The government is urging city residents who fled their homes to return, promising the military will spare no effort in securing their areas. Ali Mohamed Rage, an al-Shabab spokesman, told a local radio station that the withdrawal was aimed to enable a counter-attack, saying there would be no pull out from other regions of southern Somalia. Al Jazeera's Peter Greste, reporting from Mogadishu, said that al-Shabab "insist that this is not a retreat but an adjustmet of tactics and they will not abandon Mogadishu". "It sounds like they are planning to continue fighting as a guerrilla force," our correspondent said. "They've lost fighters from abroad, finances and political support, so the nature of this fight is changing rather dramatically." The extent of the withdrawal or what it meant was not immediately clear, but Mogadishu residents reported on Saturday al-Shabab fighters leaving their positions overnight in the city. Witnesses said convoys of al-Shabab vehicles - open-top 4x4s mounted with machine guns - headed south from Mogadishu towards the al-Shabaab-controlled town of Baidoa, 250km southwest of the capital.
