  1. Somalia’s President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed arrived in Turkey late on Tuesday http://www.worldbulletin.net/?aType=haber&ArticleID=77610
  2. Turkey on Wednesday hosted an extraordinary session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Somalia, which gave the country a chance to display its unity with the members of the organization and to raise its voice to call on the OIC to transform its desire to help into action to save the famine-stricken country. The meeting, inaugurated by the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who judged the Somalia drought a test “not only for Somalis but for the conscience of humanity,” was held in İstanbul at the call of Turkey to discuss emergency measures to be taken to save more than 3 million Somalis that are facing the worst drought and famine in the last 60 years. “Those who sleep while their neighbors are hungry do not belong with us,” Erdoğan said, citing one of the founding principles of Islam to mark that “the humanitarian understanding the Muslim states represent” obliges the member states of the OIC to do everything in their power help the Somalis. Harshly criticizing the international community for “turning a deaf ear and a blind eye” to the suffering of millions of Somalis, Erdoğan expressed his wish for the efforts of the Muslim countries to become a wake-up call for the more developed nations of the world, which pride themselves for the welfare in their countries while they ignore the screams of Africa. Erdoğan is scheduled to leave Turkey for Somalia on Thursday night along with some of the members of his Cabinet, including Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and a few Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputies as well as their families. “We hope that our visit will raise the spirits of the Somalis,” Erdoğan said of his upcoming visit to the country, which is deemed quite hostile particularly towards foreigners due to the unrest and clashes between gangs and the Somali state as well as the persistent contagious diseases. Turkey has so far collected a cash donation of TL 200 million for Somalis and delivered 10 tons of medical supplies since the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, according to Erdoğan’s statements. The prime minister also acknowledged that a Turkish Airlines (THY) cargo plane left the country on Wednesday with a dispatch of 20 tons of medical supplies, a mobile hospital weighing 10 tons and 20 tons of food aid, along with 21 health personnel to provide health assistance in a mobile hospital. Turkey had previously announced that it was ready to deliver up to six mobile hospitals to the country in places to be designated by the Somali state. On the sidelines, Erdoğan held a separate session for bilateral talks with Somalia’s president, Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, who is expected to accompany Erdoğan on his trip to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Sheikh Sharif was one of the participants of the OIC meeting along with the OIC secretary-general, Ekmeleddin İhsanoğlu; the foreign minister of Jordan, Nasser Judeh; Kazakh foreign minister, also the rotating president of the OIC, Yerzhan Kazykhanov; and ministers from the other prominent countries of the 57-nation organization. In display of solidarity with the Somalian president “Turkey will continue to support the Somali state,” asserted Erdoğan, as he emphasized that a more securely established state in Somalia would increase the aid contribution of the world to the country and ensure a more effective distribution of the collected aid to hunger-stricken Somalis. Turkey, deemed a rising political and economic power by the international media, is behind many other emerging powers of the world with its share in the African market, but during the tenure of the AK Party, the country expanded its commercial ties with the continent, as well as opening news embassies in countries that were never diplomatically reached by Turkey before. It is widely considered as especially dangerous to visit Mogadishu after the military war between fundamentalist gangs and the Somali state ended in favor of the state forces, which increased the chances of suicide terrorist attacks. Although the armed gangs withdrew from the capital, the government admits they still do not have control over the entire city.
  3. Turkey's Erdogan urges aid for Somalia, criticises capitalism 17 Aug 2011 14:28 | Source: Reuters // Reuters By Ibon Villelabeitia ISTANBUL, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan appealed on Wednesday for aid for drought-struck Somalia, criticising millionaires who drive luxury cars and the "Western world's" arrogance for ignoring the plight of the poor. In a speech sprinkled with references to Islamic piety and criticism of Western capitalism, Erdogan told the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) the famine in Somalia was "a litmus test" not only for Muslims but for the whole of humanity. "If you ride a luxury car you should be generous enough to people who are struggling with hunger," Erdogan told foreign ministers from the 57-nation OIC at an emergency summit in Istanbul to galvanise support for Somalia and drought-struck neighbouring regions. "I hope the efforts (of the OIC) will mobilise the sleeping consciences. We hope the Western world, which likes to boast about its per capita income, shows its support for Somalia." Muslim Turkey, a rapidly growing economy and multi-party democracy that has applied to join the European Union, is widely regarded as a model for growth for countries in the Muslim world and in the developing world. The OIC summit, held during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, also offers host Turkey a chance to show its commitment to Africa when other emerging powers are scrambling for trade and investments in the resource-rich continent. Erdogan, a pious Muslim who fasts during Ramadan, used his 30-minute speech to burnish his image as a hero among many Muslims, a status he has gained for his criticism of Israel and calls for Palestinian statehood. "What can we say to people on the other side, making trillions of dollars, capitalising on others? What kind of civilisation is this?" he said, raising his voice at times. "We come from the community of the Prophet, who says you cannot sleep peacefully if your neighbour is hungry. The Somali people are looking at us. Can we turn our gaze away?" Erdogan will travel to Somalia on Thursday with his family. He plans to visit relief camps and will be joined by Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and his family. Visits by foreign dignitaries are extremely rare in Somalia, which is plagued by war, anarchy and the risk of starvation among some 3.7 million Somalis. Turkey is behind other emerging countries such as China, Brazil and India in the race for new markets in Africa, but under Erdogan's AK Party government, Turkey has boosted trade with the continent and opened several new embassies there. Davutoglu later heads to South Africa and Ethiopia as part of an African tour aimed at raising Turkey's diplomatic presence in the continent and expanding business ties. Erdogan, who recounted stories of Somali refugees forced to leave behind their dying children on days-long treks to relief camps, said Turkey would open six field hospitals in Somalia and send 20 tonnes of medication and 10 tonnes of food. Somalian President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, who will accompany Erdogan to Mogadishu, praised Turkey's role. "I would like all the countries in the world to take Turkey as an example," he said. 4. UK International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell has become the first British cabinet minister to visit Somalia's war-torn capital in 18 years. Mr Mitchell warned of a race against time to tackle the "devastating famine" in the country and said without action 400,000 children could starve to death. Two weeks ago, Islamist rebels pulled out of Mogadishu, but conflict has hampered aid efforts in the country. Mr Mitchell pledged a £25m aid package, including food and medicine. The UN estimates that 12 million people have been affected by drought in the region, and has declared a famine in parts of Somalia. Mr Mitchell, who has now left Mogadishu, said: "The stark fact is that in southern Somalia the situation is deteriorating by the day. We could face deaths on a similar scale to those seen in 1991-2 if we do not act urgently now. This is a race against time." The Department for International Development said the lack of health care, immunisation, clean water and sanitation were fuelling outbreaks of diseases including cholera and measles. "Urgent action" was needed to provide food and combat disease to prevent deaths. Mr Mitchell said there would be new UK support for UNICEF - the UN organisation for children - to help provide supplementary rations for up to 192,000 people and supplies to vaccinate 800,000 children against measles. The aid package would also help UNICEF provide polio vaccines, vitamin A, and deworming supplies and equipment to help prevent malaria. The cabinet minister said more security was needed to protect humanitarian workers - and said other countries "must also maintain and increase their support at this crucial stage". During the trip he visited a refugee camp and feeding centre and met officials including Somali prime minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, who last week announced a force of 300 men had been created to protect aid convoys - helped by African peacekeepers providing security in Mogadishu.

  11. May God reward them for their good deeds. ----------- UAE sends Mogadishu 40 tonnes of aid Aug 14, 2011 DUBAI // A convoy carrying 40 tonnes of aid was dispatched to refugee camps near Mogadishu yesterday by the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA). The aid package, containing enough food to feed 1,000 families for one month, was sent by members of the RCA on the ground in Somalia. "In the coming weeks, the RCA will continue to dispatch daily aid convoys to other camps," according to a statement issued by state news agency, Wam. So far, the UAE's mission in the country has reached 10 camps around Mogadishu, the statement said. The RCA has to date contributed Dh4 million in relief efforts since the first UAE delegation to Somalia left in July. Dr Saleh Al Taee, the secretary general adviser to the RCA, said last Wednesday that a further shipment of 400 tonnes of aid would be dispatched to Somalia within the next 10 days. He urged residents to donate money, food, clothes and medicines to the charity before the ship sets sail. Somalia has been devastated by the worst drought in the region in decades which has been made worse by the presence of militant groups in the area, who have been blamed for aid camp shootings. Tens of thousands have set up makeshift camps around Mogadishu. From Wednesday, Abu Dhabi TV will host a 90-minute fund-raising telethon, Suqyahum, which translates as "quenching their thirst". The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation sent 20 tonnes of food, and The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment last week bought 960 tonnes of food from Addis Ababa to distribute in Somalia.
