  3. Somalia and my family By Mohamed Yusuf Tuesday, October 05, 2010 I recently wrote an article on Hiiraan online about former President Nationalist Hero Siad Barre, In this article, I described the things his government achieved, many people complained to me why I didn’t also mentioned the negative things that happened under his regime, I'm not naive I also know that there was tribalism and corruption in his government, I also know that many innocent people lost their lives when his government bombed Hargeysia and other northern cities, but that doesn’t change the good things Siad Barre did for Somalia. In typical Somali tribe-mentality some wrote to me, that that the only reason why I wrote the article was that I was from the M****** tribe, actually my father is from the D******* clan and my mother is from the I***** clan. Tribalism and corruption was to big factors behind the destruction of Somalia, both of them due to lack of nationalism…… I am coming with to examples from my own family: My uncle Abdiraxman Ahmed( may he rest in peace) was director of Somalia’s only milk and dairy factory which was located in Mogadishu, a job the Siad Barre government had given him ( he was qualificated) ) the government gave him 3 beautiful houses, he got a good salary, the school he sent his children to was built by Siad Barre, the hospital he used was built by Siad Barre, the road he drove on was built by Siad Barre on a car given by the government, you should think my uncle was happy man? No, he hated the fact that Siad Barre was a ******* and not D********, he rather have a useless D****** president, than a good M****** president, that shows the Somalis tribalism, my uncle died as a poor refugee in Denmark, he lost all his wealth in Mogadishu in 1991. The second example is my other uncle, I will not mention his name, he was appointed Managing Director in a bank owned by the government, he fled with 2 million dollars from the bank all the way to the United States hunted by the NSS, those money was salary to innocent government workers… Nationalism and love for Somalia and the Somali people is what contributed positively to Somalia, here are two examples from my family: My dad Adan Mahmoud was from 1960-1980 schoolteacher in Las Anod, Hargeysa, Bórama, Hobyo, Garowe, and many others cities in Somalia, he got a small salary but gave knowledge to thousands of Somalis, he was Story and economics teacher at Lafole college from 1980-1988 and from 1988-1991 he served as vice education minister in the government, he was never corrupt and was loved by all people in Mogadishu, he loves when he meets his former students from all parts of Somalia. The other example his one of my other uncles, ( yes I have a lot of uncles) he was 25 years in 1977 and lived in Las Anod, when he heard in the radio nationalist Halimo Magool sing “ oh somali man never rest before we have liberated Somali Galbeed and Somaliweyn has reunited” he joined the somali army the same day, he went down to a tunnel where the evil Etiophia had a lot of weapons and troops, he blew himself up and killed 200 etiophian soldiers, and made huge damage to Etiophia. He died for the liberation of Somaliweyn! I think that all Somalis should contribute to the reconstruction of Somalia and therefore I have started a campaign in Denmark where we raise money for a hospital in the town of Marka in southern Somalia, I love to help my Somali brothers and sisters. Long Live Somalia! And long live the great somali people! PS: I am looking forward to the day when I will see Mogadishu and its great people, a city my family have many good memories about, we all know Mogadishu it’s the great city in the world! And the great capital of Somaliweyn! Mohamed Yusuf Is a Somali student in Denmark. E-mail: mohamedyusuflive.dk@live.dk Mohamed for president (2020). I will be your campaign manager, holla at ya sis ASAP! what a bright young man, masha'Allah

  15. Monday, October 04, 2010 GENEVA (AFP)— UN refugee chief Antonio Guterres warned governments on Monday that unrelenting conflicts in Afghanistan and Africa were creating a near permanent "global" refugee burden. Highlighting decades of displacement for millions of Afghans and Somalis, Guterres told the UNHCR's annual governing Executive Committee that last year was the worst in two decades for returns. About 250,000 refugees went back home in 2009, about one quarter of the annual average over the past 10 years, according to the agency. They included just 61 Somalis. "The changing nature and the growing intractability of conflict make achieving and sustaining peace more difficult in today?s world," Guterres said. "As a result of never-ending conflicts, we are witnessing the creation of a number of quasi-permanent, global refugee populations, of which Afghans and Somalis are the most obvious," he added. The number of Somali refugees abroad rose from 440,000 to 678,000 by the end of 2009, despite a dip in the middle of the decade. Another 1.5 million Somalis were displaced inside the country. Sixty-one Somali refugees returned home last year compared to 51,000 in 2001, according to UNHCR data, even though they face significant hardship abroad. "I do not believe there is any group of refugees as systematically undesired, stigmatised and discriminated against," said Guterres. Some 1.7 million Afghan refugees are still in Pakistan, and another 1.0 million in Iran, while more are dispersed across 69 countries following nearly three decades of conflict in Afghanistan. About 5.0 million have returned voluntarily since 2002, according to the UNHCR, which also highlighted displacement in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Guterres underlined the "extraordinary generosity" of Iran and Pakistan and urged greater international solidarity to share the burden, as well as more protection for travelling and often young refugees. Twelve more countries have offered to take in existing refugees under resettlement programmes since 2008 but the number of places on offer is too low. "We estimate that as many as 800,000 refugees need resettlement, yet the number of places available annually is only around 10 percent of that, and less than one percent of the total number of refugees in the world," the UN refugee chief said. 18. Somalia al-Shabaab paid $250 to die By Vision Reporter AL-Shabaab militants are paying foreign fighters a few dollars to boost them in fighting the fragile Somali government and the peacekeeping troops in Mogadishu. About 7,500 Ugandan and Burundi soldiers make up the African Union peacekeeping force supporting the Somali transitional government. Comprising mostly young men, the recruits leave the comfort in Canada, US and Sweden to join the militia linked to Al-Qaeda sustaining the violence in the Horn of Africa country. But many of them have been killed in the recent fighting. “We have been told we could be given $250 (sh565,000) per month as foreign recruits, which is a lot of money in Somalia,” Abikar Mohammed told Fatuma Noor, a reporter of The Star, a Kenyan newspaper. “We all make more than that back home (US). Even those of us who don’t have jobs get that as pocket money, so it’s not about the money. It’s about what we believe in.” Mohammed, from US, was among the nine recruits interviewed by Noor in Nairobi last month. It seems as the case for increasing the strength of the AU force in Somalia to stop the reign of terror authored by the Al-Shabaab militants is under consideration, foreign fighters like him are flying in to bolster the insurgents’ campaign. Ironically, some of the foreign recruits were evacuated from the war-torn country to the West for safety years ago, but are returning to support the violence that uprooted them. Nairobi, Kenya was their first stopover before flying to Hargesia from where they travelled to Mogadishu. Mohammed, now 23, left Mogadishu when he was seven years old. In Nairobi, he and other recruits lived with relatives in Eastleigh, a suburb dominated by Somali, before they headed to Mogadishu. In Hargesia , an Al-Shabaab contact gave them tips of encouragement as they waited to be transported to Mogadishu, the world’s most dangerous city. “Mujahideen should not care much about this life, but the life after,” the Al-Shabaab agent told them. At least two dozen Americans have gone to Somalia to fight in its civil war in recent years, FBI director Robert Muller said last week. Foreign fighters from Afghanistan and Iraq have also joined the Somali militants and young men from the East African region are enlisted. Two Ugandan suspects of the July 11, bomb attacks in Kampala are said to have been trained by Al-Shabaab and also fought in Somalia. One of them, Issa Luyima, 33, confessed at a press conference in August that he was a foot solider of the militants and had been to the war-torn country. The other, Mohammed Mugisha said: “I joined Al-shabaab in 2008 while they were co-ordinating with Al-Qaeda. I was sent here to rent a house in which the bomb attacks were to be planned. I got a house in Nakulabye (a Kampala suburb). Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the July 11 bombing in which 81 people were killed. The insurgent said the attack was retaliation to Uganda’s deployment of troops in Mogadishu. Published on: Saturday, 2nd October, 2010
