December 22, 2010 Chinese authorities have banned the use of foreign words and phrases – especially English – in Chinese newspapers, books and websites. The ban, reported Wednesday, was issued by the General Administration of Press and Publication, the governing body for written publications. It says the increasing use of English and half-English phrases is damaging the purity of the Chinese language and disrupting the nation's "harmonious and healthy cultural environment." The ruling body leaves some room for English words and abbreviations to be used if they are immediately followed by a Chinese translation or explanation. It says translations should be consistent with basic translation principles and practices. The announcement includes a warning that violations will be punished as provided for by the law.

He incorporated his wide-ranging tastes into songs he wrote himself, and into the music he taught to several bands whose songs he directed. But living in Mogadishu, Somalia, Gaandi Muhamed Sufi's love for music was a dangerous one. Devoid of an effective central government since the fall of President Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, the war-torn nation has become a casualty of the conflict between rival warlords, the country plagued by human-rights violations, famine and disease. In April, Islamist militants Hizbul Islam, one of the country's two main insurgent forces, issued an explicit warning to Somali radio stations demanding they stop playing music, which they deemed "un-Islamic." "The Islamist [insurgents], they don't like to hear someone, he makes songs, he makes films," Sufi said in broken English. "Then I [was] scared myself. I run from Somalia.... If you live in Somalia now, you can't sleep well. Always, you're scared. Next to village, two groups fighting." With the support of his wife and five children, Sufi set off to seek a better life for himself and his family. In January 2007, Sufi took a ship to Istanbul, Turkey, contacted the United Nations Refugee Agency and asked for help. He said the agency connected him with the Canadian embassy, which helped bring him to Vancouver in July. Between January 2005 and December 2009, the federal government, through the Department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada, brought 4,026 people from 46 countries to B.C., according to a new report by the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. Of those, 251 were from Somalia. The majority of the Somali government-assisted refugees stayed in Metro Vancouver, while about 25 per cent ended up settling in Edmonton, Alta., and Hamilton, Ont., the report stated. Of those who stayed in Metro Vancouver, 145 settled in Surrey, while 30 settled in Burnaby. As part of Canada's Resettlement Assistance program, refugees are eligible for up to one year of income support through Citizenship and Immigration Canada, at rates that mirror provincial welfare rates. The vast majority require support their first year, then transition to provincial income assistance for reasons such as pre-existing medical conditions and differing levels of literacy, said Chris Friesen, director of settlement services at the Immigrant Services Society of B.C. Sufi arrived in Vancouver on July 20 and for two weeks stayed at the ISS's taxpayer-funded Welcome House in downtown Vancouver, the temporary accommodation provided to refugees to help with the transition. He said he remembered joking with a Welcome House employee who was explaining crosswalk signals. "She said, 'When you see the man, you can go. When you see the hand, you have to stop.' When I saw the hand, I made the hand," he said, holding up his hand and laughing. "She laughed and I said, 'No, I kidding you.' " Sufi eventually settled into a one-storey home, which he now shares with four other tenants on Renfrew Street in East Vancouver. His modest bedroom, for which he pays $425 per month, is littered with trinkets from his past and present: On his television set sits a small photo album filled with family snapshots; next to it is a stereo, on which he plays all the music he likes. Pinned to the lilac wall above the bed hangs a large Canadian flag - an item left behind by a previous tenant that Sufi found fitting to keep. "I say, 'I'm in Canada now.' I keep it," Sufi said, smiling. On the wall behind his door hangs a Freshslice Pizza hat, part of the uniform he wears to work, eight to 10 hours a day, six days a week, making pizza dough to be delivered to individual restaurants. It's a job he got less than two months after his arrival in Vancouver, defying the odds. Sufi said he will never forget the night he was scheduled to start work. "The SkyTrain, I didn't get," he recalled with a smile. "It was 12 midnight. Until [2 a.m.] I didn't get. Also, I have no money in my pocket. So, two hours I run around Gilmour and Canada Way. I couldn't see the police, because if I see them, I can say, 'Please help me. I've lost my way.' Then you know the bus station? I sleep there until morning." Fortunately, his employer was sympathetic and gave him another shot. A few months in, Sufi told the citizenship department he no longer needed financial assistance. "I got the job, I started. I said, 'Now, enough. I don't need your money,' " he said. "They send me e-mail, they say, 'Thank you. We never see like you.' " Sufi said he would one day like to visit Toronto, where there is a large Somali population, and perhaps pursue a career in music again. I think what Canada should do, Maggie, is to find something more productive in order to create jobs for their Citizens. And what Canadians should do is mind their own business. Because these respective Citizens are Canadians as well; and they have a right to wear Niqab if that’s what they choose to wear. You and anybody for that matter have no right to tell them what to wear and humiliate them; and violate their rights if that what will get you through the day. And what each Canadian should ask him/herself is: do these Women have a right to wear wherever the heck they want? I think that's the right question that we need to be asking ourselves, instead of debating if Niqab should be ban or not. In this case that's beside the point. Who says in Canada for that matter - we ought to be dressing up like Westerners? Where does it say that in the Canadian Charter and Freedom? Do some people have the right to dictate others of what they should or shouldn't wear? Specially Maggie Gilmour -it’s obvious that she hasn't lately paid a visit to the Canadian Charter rights and Freedom: It's unconstitutional to force or pressure anyone to give up their Cultures or Customs. What saddens me the most, though, is hearing some Muslims arguing: this is Islamic or not. This is what Maggie is using to give some credibility to her no-sense argument. She found a confused wanna be. And I quote Maggie’s article: says Farzana Hassan, a Muslim activist who wants to ban niqabs. “Most of these women are coerced,” she says. “You cannot choose to be a slave.” If Farzana Hassan, whom Maggie painted her as "the evoluer" or the civilized one: who coerced her to wear Western clothing? Or is she simply imitating the Westerners without knowing it. Does she really think dressing up like Western fashion is the ultimate civilization or will make her a true Canadian? Good luck my dear; but don't try to impose others with your foolishness. Despite of what some opportunistic Muslims would say about their community; I think -It's even insulting to see that non-Muslims, some times, North-American and European fascists telling Muslims what not to wear? Could they been told by the Quebec legislators and Canadian Common House to abandon their practices merely they are offending some Citizens? They say: these are free and democratic countries; and these Citizens’ rights are indeed been protected by the State. Is this Middle-eastern - Canadian Women as well entitled the same constitutional right as well? Having said that, it's astonishing to see some Muslims are succumbing with this diabolic strategy: ratings chasers' psychological war-fare (Media). Needless to say, the Muslims often dismiss this media campaign as nothing but a mere charade of evil tactic of pursuit of fortune. No, I'm sorry- is much deeper than that; yet some Muslims for that matter, I think, wish to settle as being mere spectators - instead of fighting back -and challenging this injustices through the Courts or use of stiff economic boycotts to these villains' businesses, who demonize the religion of Islam and constantly discrediting the Muslims' Citizens. Nevertheless, the Muslim community ought to be stop watching those sadist Networks, (TV's Channels), and listening racist Radios and reading those narcissist News-Papers, who defamed repeatedly our religion and bad-mouthing endlessly to our people. The Imams and community leaders must bring their congregations together in spite of their nationalities differences and working together toward achieving their common interest, and the Leaders should go straight to the advertisers of this media; and demand them to stop doing business with these Channels, who are enticing hatred against Muslims. If these advertisers refuse to withdraw their adds to these Networks. The Muslim community must organize a boycott with these businesses (these bigots) either they live in Europe or North-America. The Muslim community must employee wherever effective strategy that would work to defend their community. And Muslim community must get involve politically and vote collectively the candidates, whom, they think at least will serve their interest and not forget them. Otherwise, they ought to be withdrawing their confidence next election; if they fail to deliver what they promised them. These politicians must know the Muslims mean business. Rests assure that's the only language they understand. What's so disturbing is that some Western demagogues are striving to advance their personal political ambitions to the expenses of the Muslim community, while promoting euro-centrism domination; and they are maliciously attempting to marginalize the Western communities in order to win simply elections. Especially in Quebec who are not longer producing visionaries, creative and courageous Leaders, but a bunch of Politicians who will do anything to get elected- even if they have to use ‘Burqa’, or Niqab instead of creating jobs for their citizens.
