by Idil Farah Friday, May 06, 2011 Being a Somali Feminist sure sucks. I once attended a women’s conference in Alberta, and the topic of discussion revolved around the lived experiences of Muslim-Canadian women who are forced to operate amongst two often-competing paradigms. A semi-prominent social scientist began her treatise against the illiberal cultural practice of female genital circumcision, and the oppressive cultural space Somali women inhabit. This orientalist continued to discuss Somali women as if she were discussing zoo animals on an episode of national geographic, and continued her rant without any regards to the actual lived experiences of Somali women. When I interjected, and explained that Somali women are active agents in this exploitive practice, and not passive spectators in their own subjugation, she dismissed my opinions and accused of me being a patriarchal apologist. I explained that this is a cultural practice performed, encouraged, and maintained by women, within the confines of a patriarchal society. Many human rights activists have challenged the legitimacy of FGM as a cultural institution; and have called upon governments to ban this practice. But many of these activists fail to understand the cultural importance of female genital circumcision to the individuals that practice it. While it is an oppressive practice, purveyors of this tradition view it as liberation, for how can ‘womanhood’ be constructed without the cutting of a woman’s perceived sexually deviant clitoris. In the eyes of the protectors of ‘Somali culture’, to attack female genital circumcision is to attack the Somali women, as this is as customary as dolls given to little girls. I do not suggest we accept this excuse, or lend legitimacy to it, but we must listen to these narratives, as understanding the context around this social institution is important in abolishing it. If one depicts a visual representation of submissive and docile Somali woman, then one overlooks the powerful role Somali women play in legitimizing this tradition. In my own experience, it was my father and uncle who objected to this practice, and saved my siblings and I from the unjust fate experienced by many Somali women, while my mother supported it. She continued her lecture, again ignoring the voices of the women she claims to fight on behalf of, and completely rejecting my analysis. I remember having this feeling of déjà-vu, as I am persistently playing a mediator between the global north and south. When amongst my Somali co-nationals, I am charged with being the westernized feminist who seeks to delegitimize important cultural institutions. When I’m amongst western feminists, I am the apologist for tyrannical and anti women institutions. And to this academic, I was simply a brainwashed African woman in need of the protection of liberalism. My experience is not unique. There are many women who are forced into this mediator role by competing cultural paradigms. If I lend political and social agency to Somali women, and reject the limited narratives about my homeland, then I am in solidarity with patriarchy. On the other hand, if I challenge and call on Somali women/African women to address our subjugation at the hands of our men, I am merely the political messenger of the West. I think much of this conflict stems from society’s need to group cultures into comfortable boxes, so we may understand and place judgment upon them. Even within a specific cultural perspective, like that of Somali women, there exists many multi-dimensions. As a Canadian of Somali descent, my experiences and challenges are different from a Somali woman living in war torn Mogadishu. As a feminist, and political activist, I find it at times difficult to mediate these worldviews, as I feel I am often caught in the middle between the civilizations. When one thinks of Somalia, one imagines our planets version of hell, with images of pirates, warlords, FGM, and poverty fresh in the minds of the public. While these images are part of a society in chaos, it is reductionist, and these limited accounts provide little support to the efforts of dividing the cultural gap between global women. Women are complex, our experiences are nuanced, and our struggles cannot be summed up in a PHD dissertation. The image of the oppressed African women does little to support African feminists, and our quest for social justice. Similarly, the perception of western women amongst African women must be re-evaluated, and not reduce an entire movement to western imperialism. If we want to address and devise solutions to our common/uncommon problems, we must accept our multidimensional layers of our experiences and identities, while rejecting the ‘othering’ of our fellow sisters. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Idil Holif is a blogger and immigrant rights activist. Xoghayaha guud ee Qarammada Midoobay oo calaamka ugu baaqay in la taageero dowladda Soomaaliya Khamiis, May 05, 2011 (HOL) – Xoghayaha guud ee Qarammada Midoobay Ban Ki-Moon ayaa ku sheegay warbixin uu kaga hadlay Soomaaliya in beesha caalamka looga baahan yahay inay gacan kusiiso DKMG ah sidii ay ammaanka Soomaaliya u soo celin lahayd. "Bilihii lasoo dhaafay ciidamada DKMG ah iyo isbahaysigooda AMISOM waxay qabsadeen deegaanno ay horay uga talin jirtay Xarrakada Al-Shabaab," ayuu ku yiri warbixintan oo Arbacadii shalay uu ka hor akhriyay golaha ammaanka ee Qarammada Midoobay. Sidoo kale, warbixinta ayuu ku sheegay in dowladda Soomaaliya ay dadaal weyn ugu jirto sidii ay magaalada Muqdisho oo dhan dib ugu qabsan lahayd si ay ugu soo celiso ammaan. Sidoo kalena waxay ka furtay gobollada koonfurta iyo bartamaha Soomaaliya aagag cusub oo dagaal, iyadoo qabsatay dhowr degmo. "Hadda waxaa jira horumar dhinaca ammaanka ah oo ay ku tallaabsatay DKMG ah, iyadoo kaashanaysa kuwa xiriirka la leh," ayuu yiri Ki-Moon oo walaac ka muujiyay in horumarka ay dowladdu ku tallaabsatay ay dhaawacaan khilaafaadka siyaasadda ku saleysan ee ka dhex taagan hay'adaha dowladda Soomaaliya. Xoghayaha guud ee ayaa intaas ku daray in qalalaasaha ka taagan Soomaaliya uu khatar ku yahay dalalka dariska la ah, isagoo yiri: "Dowladda KMG ah ee Soomaaliya iyo AMISOM waxay u baahan yihiin taageero dheeraad ah." "Beesha Caalamku waa inay dhaqaale wanaagsan siiso dowladda KMG ah," ayuu hadalkiisa ku daray. "Dowladda Soomaaliya waxay u baahan tahay in laga taageero sidii ay ammaanka Muqdisho u soo celin lahayd ayna dib ugu dhisi lahayd." "Guulaha dowladda KMG ah ay ka gaartay dagaallada ay ku jirto waxay taasi sabab u noqon kartaa in gargaarka bani'aadamnimo la gaarsiiyo dadka u baahan, waana lagama maarmaan in laga qaybqaato dib u soo celinta ammaanka Soomaaliya. Haddii aan taas ku guuldareysanno waxaa sare u sii kacaya xaaladaha bani'aadamnimo ee xilligan taagan, waxaana lumaya rajooyinka nabadda lagu soo celinayo, taasoo caqabad ku noqonaysa nabadda iyo ammaanka dalalka ku yaalla Bariga Afrika," ayuu Ban Ki-Moon hadalkiisa raaciyay. Xoghayaha guud ee Qarammada Midoobay ayaa sheegay in 2.4-milyan qof oo Soomaali ah ay u baahan yihiin gargaar aadamnimo oo deg-deg ah, isagoo xusay in haddii aanay gargaar helin ay tiradu ku darsoomi doonto 20% lixda bilood ee soo socda. Ki-Moon ayaa warbixintiisa ku sheegay in dhibaatooyinka jira ay sabab u yihiin ammaan xumada ka jirta Soomaaliya, barakaca iyo weliba cunno yarida ay abaaruhu dhaliyeen. Isagoo intaas ku daray in 55,000 oo qof oo Soomaali ah ay abaaraha hadda jira ka barakaciyeen deegaannadoodii illaa bishii Desember ee sannadkii hore. 16,000 oo qof oo dheeraad ahna ay ka barakaceen labadii bilood ee sannadkan ugu horreysay magaalada Muqdisho. Ban Ki-Moon ayaa sidoo kale ugu baaqay madaxda DKMG ah inay si dhaqso ah ku xalliyaan khilaafka siyaasadeed ee u dhexeeya, kaasoo ka dhashay muddo kororsi ay baarlamaanka iyo xukuumaddu siyaabo kala duwan ugu dhawaaqeen horraantii sannadkan, iyadoo weli uu khliaafku taagan yahay. "Madaxda dowladda KMG ah waa inay khilaafkooda ku xalliyaan si waafaqsan Axdiga u dagsan, ayna si wadajir ah u dhameystiraan howlaha horyaalla oo ay ka mid yihiin sugidda ammaanka, dib u heshiisiinta iyo dhismaha hay'adaha siyaasadda iyo kuwa bulshada," ayuu yiri xoghayaha guud ee Qarammada Midoobay. Ugu dambeyn, Ban Ki-Moon wuxuu warbixintiisa ku sheegay in ciidamada AMISOM oo la xoojiyo ay sabab u noqonayso in dowladda Soomaaliya ay dalka oo dhan dib ugu soo celiso gacanteeda ayna si wanaagsan ugu shaqeyso bulshadeeda. Somalia urgently needs help of global partners to consolidate gains – UN report Wednesday, May 04, 2011 Despite the gains achieved by Somalia’s interim Government, the country urgently needs more help from its international partners to tackle a host of challenges and achieve greater stability and peace, says a new United Nations report released today. In recent months, the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and its allies, with the support of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), have gained ground against Al-Shabaab militants, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon notes in his latest report to the Security Council on Somalia. The TFG has undertaken efforts to expand its area of control in the capital, Mogadishu, to enhance security for its people, and has also opened new fronts in south-central Somalia and taken control of major towns. “Now that there has been progress on the security track, the Transitional Federal Government, with the support of its partners, must deliver on the political and development tracks to sustain and consolidate the hard-won gains,” Mr. Ban writes. He says the Horn of Africa nation faces levels of violence, damaging weather conditions and insecurity that would “shake even stable countries,” and the TFG and AMISOM need additional support. “The international community must keep its end of the bargain,” he states. “The Transitional Federal Government urgently needs assistance for Mogadishu’s stabilization, recovery and reconstruction. “If we reinforce the military gains, provide humanitarian relief and achieve political progress, we can set Somalia on course to greater stability and peace. If we fail, we risk a growing humanitarian crisis, a deteriorating security situation and a worsening threat to regional peace and stability.” The number of people in Somalia needing humanitarian assistance and livelihood support has reached 2.4 million, an increase of 20 per cent over the previous six months, according to the report. Somalis have been adversely affected by continued civil insecurity, displacement and food insecurity. Drought and conflict have been the main reasons for new displacements, the report adds, noting that nearly 55,000 people have been displaced owing to drought since December. In addition, almost 16,000 people were displaced in Mogadishu in the first two months of the year owing to heavy fighting. Mr. Ban also states that the current disagreement among the transitional federal institutions over the extension of the transitional period distracts from the urgency of the manifold tasks that are before them, including providing basic services, recovery and reconstruction, and humanitarian aid. In February, Somalia’s interim Parliament voted to extend its mandate by three years beyond the August deadline by which it was to enact a new constitution ahead of general elections. The move drew criticism from UN officials, who said the decision was made in haste and without the required consultations. Mr. Ban cites the need for effective leadership to complete the priority transitional tasks, chief among them being the constitution-making process. Other tasks to be completed include political reconciliation and building civilian and security institutions. The development of the Somali security sector institutions is crucial, as is speeding up the deployment of additional troops for AMISOM. “A stronger AMISOM would help the Transitional Federal Government to bring and sustain more territory under its control and to begin delivering services to the Somali people,” he states. by Bashir Goth Thursday, May 05, 2011 Bin Laden is gone. He died as he wished to die, a martyr to some but to many others an evil incarnate who chose to live by the gun and surely died by the gun. But the nagging question is will the world be any different? Not so soon. As the Somalis say: Ayax teg, eelna reeb (gone is the locust, but it has left behind a lasting breed). Bin Laden has left behind a proliferating breed of Al Qaeda affiliates in many parts of the world. Indeed the world may experience nasty reminders in the near future as his followers try to demonstrate their ability to avenge their leader’s death. One may hope, however, that Bin Laden’s departure closes a dark and painful era of division and hostility between the west and the Muslim world. No one can deny that Bin Laden and his extremist ideology were responsible for the killing of tens of thousands of innocent people around the world. Bin Laden adherents killed thousands of Muslims in mosques, in shopping centers, in schools and orphanages, in hotels and in their own homes while sleeping or meeting around their dining tables. The U.S invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq might never have happened and tens of thousands of lives as well as the material wealth and cultural heritage of old civilizations might never have been destroyed without the existence of Bin Laden. Muslim communities in the West might never have experienced such unprecedented alienation and Islamophobia and Muslim youth born and bred in Western capitals might never have sought deliverance and martyrdom in mass killing and suicide bombings. Thousands of spin doctors, spontaneous pundits and security experts might never have earned big bucks in the industry of terrorism and the Arab news satellite Al Jazeera might never have grown into such an iconic yet idiosyncratic news channel without propagating Bin Laden’s poisonous messages. It is arguably true that it might have been ideal to capture Bin Laden alive and bring him to face justice in a court of law, but did Bin Laden himself believe in an ideal world? Did he allowed justice for the thousands of people killed by his supporters and sympathizers or did he ever express any sympathy to the victims of his terrorist marauders? There is no doubt that Bin Laden’s Rambo type killing by Americans would turn him into a martyr, but it is also true it would be very difficult for Al Qaeda to survive very long without the deep pockets and outreach of Bin Laden and without his charisma as a Buddha-like figure who was born into wealth and luxury and chose to lead a harsh life among the poor. Al Qaeda was a house built on sand and stood only due to the ingenuity of its engineer and with the departure of the engineer, it will eventually fall. Granted that the debris and the fall out will cause a lot of damage here and there, but once the dust settles down there would be no Bin Laden to erect it again. We hope Al Shabab, the Al Qaeda offshoot in Somalia, will take heed, disband and ask forgiveness from the Somali people for heinous atrocities they committed before it is too late. It is also worth to remember that Bin Ladenism has long been buried by Arab youth inspired revolutions before the death of Bin Laden himself. And we hope that Al Shabab, the Al Qaeda offshoot in Somalia, would take heed, disband and ask forgiveness from the Somali people for the heinous atrocities they committed before it is too late.
