  2. Alphonce Omondi, 1st Prize Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Cartoonists either based in or originally from Africa have made a clean sweep of the prizes on offer during the inaugural edition of the Hadaf Somalia International Cartoon Competition. The competition was organized by the Association of East African Cartoonists (KATUNI). Alphonce Omondi, a Kenyan cartoonist whose works are published by The Star newspaper in Nairobi, was declared the overall winner. He bags the $3,000 first prize. Amin Amir, who is originally from Somalia but now practices his craft in Canada, was a close second followed by Damien Glez who is based in Burkina Faso. They each get $1,500 and $750 respectively. The competition was the first of its kind on Somalia in over two decades and attracted over 800 entries from 265 cartoonists living in 50 countries around the world. 11 Somali cartoonists, some of whom still live and work in Somalia, were among the participants. A selection of the cartoons was put on display at The GoDown Arts Centre in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, from 2-30 April, 2011. Katuni’s General Secretary, Patrick Gathara, congratulated the winners saying this was a great achievement for cartoonists on the continent. Amin Amir, 2nd Prize “I wish to thank all who participated. This goes a long way to show that cartooning in Africa is alive and kicking and deserves to take pride of place among the continents’ other achievements,” he said. The competition focused on the achievements of, and challenges facing, the Somali peace process and most of the cartoonists identified the Al Qaida-linked extremist group, Al Shabaab, as the main stumbling block to peace in the war-torn country. Some, though, were also critical of Somali politicians and the country’s Transitional Federal Government. “We hope to make this an annual event since cartooning is an effective means to capture popular sentiment and initiate dialogue,” said Mr. Gathara adding that KATUNI hoped to be able to exhibit the cartoons in Mogadishu. Damien Glez, 3rd Prize
  3. AMISOM civilian staff relocate to Somalia AMISOM Press Release Wednesday, May 18, 2011 Nairobi, May 18th, 2011 - The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) has on Monday 16th May 2011 relocated its civilian international staff and police officers to Mogadishu, Somalia. The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Boubacar Gaoussou Diarra said with the deployment of these civilian personnel and police officers including the Deputy SRCC, Honourable Wafula Wamunyinyi, AMISOM’s deployment in Mogadishu is now fully reflective of its multi-dimensional nature as a modern Peace Support Operation. "In this regard, the civilian and police components will enhance their support to, and compliment, the efforts of the military component in achieving the broad political, security and developmental objectives of the African Union in Somalia." said Ambassador Diarra. In particular, Ambassador Diarra said the civilian component is expected to provide, more closely, support to the Transitional Federal Institutions (TFIs) in carrying out their mandate and in providing services to the Somali population. Over the past months, troops of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia with the support of AMISOM have pushed Armed Opposition Groups out of key strategic positions hence improving the security situation in Mogadishu. The civilian international staff and police officers who have been operating from Nairobi since 2008 due to security concerns will continue to deploy to Mogadishu in phases as the security situation continues to improve.

  6. Government of Alberta has recently made an announcement of critical funding that will enable the Canadian Somali community to prevent youth crime. This is a great victory for the Canadian Somali community. After a lot of advocacy efforts, the government of Alberta has finally listened to our concerns and provided the Alberta Somali community with much needed funding to deal with the loss of so many young men to gun violence. The program to support at-risk Canadian Somali youth in Alberta has received $1.4 million in provincial funding, the Alberta government announced recently. Ahmed Hussen, national president of the Canadian Somali Congress, was at the announcement to offer his support, along with Mohamed Accord, president of Alberta’s Somali Community Centre. “We’re very proud of this announcement,” Hussen said. “It is an initiative that has come from the community and it is meant to provide supports to Canadian Somali youth in order to enable them to avoid a life of crime.” The funding will enable Canadian Somali parents work more closely with a number of schools in order to ensure that their children succeed in school.

  13. Prominent Somali Cleric Supports Extension of TFG Hiiraan Online Tuesday, May 17, 2011 Mogadishu, Somalia (HOL) - A prominent Somali religious leader has called for the extension of the term of Somalia’s Interim Federal Government (TFG) citing the worsening security situation as a critical issue that will derail free and fair voting in the strife-torn nation. Sheikh Mohamed Ahmed Noor who is based in Canada and who is also the founder of Al-Islaahi Islamic party urged all interest groups in Somalia’s murky politics to consider extending the term of the government by one year in order to pave way for democratic elections. “The security situation does not allow free and fair elections in Somalia, there is the need to extend the term of the government to sort out security issues first” said Sheikh Noor "You can seek political legitimacy from people who are in peace. But if you seek legitimacy from unstable community then it is like you don’t care about the needs of the Somali public” he said using a strong Somali metaphor to put across the message that the government needs to work to build the security situation first. This latest introduction of religious voice into Somalia’s disputed election timeline is a major concern from the country’s top Islamic clerics who are viewing the extension of the interim period as but unavoidable for now. Speaking to Voice of America (VOA) the religious leader accused Somali politicians of derailing efforts to snatch Somalia back from the jaws of a devastating decades-long conflict. He said the heated standoff between the interim institutions is a major factor that contributed to a political stalemate in Somalia trampling all efforts to pacify the country into the dust. The cleric however hailed the need to organize elections within the country when the time comes; he however took issue with the current unfavorable election environment particularly in the capital Mogadishu which had witnessed an increased military activity over the past few years. "It is a noble idea to organize elections in Mogadishu, but given the current situation there is seemingly no political settlement between concerned parties especially between the government and the parliament. I urge the creation of a caretaker government that can pave way for elections” he said Since the beginning of the controversy surrounding the extension of the TFG, Somalia’s all-time important religious center of authority, has remained largely silent, leaving many to wonder when, or if, the nation’s senior religious leaders would jump into the controversy that has posed the most significant challenge to the country’s future. http://www.voanews.com/somali/news/Sh-Gadhyare-Xilligan-Doorasho-kuma-Habboona-121995614.html
