GALKAYO, Somalia Aug 12 (Garowe Online) - The Somali army's commander in the central regions, Abdullahi "Afgub" Ardaf, was killed in the town of Galkayo last night, sources tell Garowe Online. Three men armed with pistols shot and killed the army commander at around 7:40pm local time Monday, with residents in south Galkayo confirming that the killers escaped. Police forces in north Galkayo, which is controlled by the Puntland regional authority, have been placed on high alert and the town's nighttime curfew is being "strictly enforced," according to locals. Galkayo has been the scene of numerous attacks in recent weeks, including deadly shootings and explosions targeting well-known community elders and businessmen. No group has claimed responsiblity for the killing yet, but Islamist insurgents have killed many Somali government officials since a bloody, anti-Ethiopia insurgency erupted in early 2007.

The commander of Ethiopian forces in Somalia has been called back to his country for his failure to bring peace to the war-torn nation. Ethiopia's government ordered General Gabre Heard as well as a colonel connected to the Ethiopian secret intelligence agency to return to the country for failing to perform their duties, a Press TV correspondent reported Tuesday. The men have since been replaced by two new Ethiopian army commanders in what has been described as a discreet handing-over ceremony in Mogadishu. General Gabre had been accused by the former deputy prime minister of Somalia, Hussein Mohamed Farah Aideed, of allowing the killing and displacing of thousands of Somali civilians. But Gabre and the unnamed colonel were reportedly also called back because of their suspected involvement in financial scandals including the blackmailing of the Somali president, prime minister and various businessmen. Both men are thought to have gained large sums of wealth from the war in Somalia. Somalia has been without an effective central government since President Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991. In 2006, US-backed Ethiopian troops invaded the country in an attempt to back Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG). Thousands of civilians have been killed and displaced as a result of the continuous violence in the war-torn country.

An explosion occurred near Mogadishu has struck an Ethiopian troops army vehicle at Sinka Dhera area outside Somali capital on Monday morning eyewitnesses said. Witness Mohamed Hassan says he saw a blown-up vehicle laying the wayside, but fled the scene after Ethiopian troops began opening additional fire. The spokesman of the Islamic courts union has claimed that his group was behind that attack. He added that more than 25 Ethiopian troops died in the blast. Sacdiya Hussein, a local woman at the site of the explosion, said, "It looked very ugly, there was blood everywhere." Islamic insurgents have carried out almost daily attacks on government troops and their Ethiopian allies in the capital since they were driven from Mogadishu in December 2006. In the past few months, fighters linked to the Islamic Courts Union have begun staging hit and run raids on outlying towns. Impoverished Somalia has not had a government since warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and then turned their clan-based militias on each other. as for those who suspended the laws of Allah and replaced them with man-made laws which oppose them, believing in the validity of their man-made laws, they have disbelieved and gone out of islam, by the consensus of the scholars. my friend J.a.c.a.y.l.b.a.r.o think about this, as it says gone out of islam. if you believe in democracy you have disbelieved. i can post more if you want.
