  1. argh! my Somali reading skills are stcuk at age six... translate please oh and by the way thanks
  2. I am currently doing this project with a collective of students. We are all doing site specific performances or installations. I am doing a performance around folklore and teaching people about culture through folklore. So here is my dilenma I cannot for the life of me remember the dhegdheer stories. I know the guideline is she kidnaps someone. She plans on eating them they escape and repeat. So here is where you come in. I need dheegdheer stories (specific stories) help!
  3. Originally the poem was titled "I want to eat you...(in a non s.e.x.u.a.l way)....well...nevermind!" But that is a bit of a lengthy problem. The dark limpid pools of your eyes Were all I ever needed Your face is projected from my mind's eye into th skies Form the moment I laid my orbs on you You were nourishment to me I take your smiles and your skin with my tea I inhale in your stories And your hair You are my home I want to rip you open piece by tear I want to lick and gnaw on your bones I lay mysef down at your feet and make an offering of myself I lay in wait for you to do the same And offer yourself to me, not someone else Ritualistically I wish you knew the effect You have on me Passing glances from you Make me weak in the knees Images of you Pass through me all the time But, by the end of the week I will consume you and make you all mine

    Gay Somali

    * wonders to herself* hmmm it seems this topic is changing from Gay Somali and slowly morphing into an angry mob out to get peacenow
  6. wow! what an essay It's funny becuase I recntly fascilitated a workshop on anti-oppression for young women. I don't know how the topic got to the other and otherness, but one woman brought the idea that the new other has always been Islamic and Middles Eastern that even though the west has recently coined the phrase Islamaphobia it has existed for hundreds of years before and we see examples of it in painings and literature. Another woman (a Muslim woman I might add)then added to what this woman was illustratiing by saying that is the reason why as moderate muslims we need to speak out for our community. I managed to not hit the roof when she used the term "moderate muslim" and chose instead to challenge her. Those words of Moderate Muslim and Orthadox Muslim (that we especially as Muslims) should be aware of using create a false dicohtomy Muslims in general, and oversimplify our religous beliefs to outsiders.
  7. I don't know I think she is due for a resurection....very soon.

    Gay Somali

Homosexuality exists everywhere (seriously) and can go back in time to God knows when. The ancient greeks use to prepare their young boys for being kidnapped by older men. every parent knew it was going to happen some day. Just like the Romans who for the most part were split down the middle as hetreos and homos. And as for Somali gays yes, they exist just like Muslim gays. Just like Jewish gays...h.e.l.l... I don't think there is a culture or religion in the world that does not have its fair share of homosexuals. My point is live and let live There are worse things happening in the world then someones sexual preference. And besides only Allah can judge humanity come judgement day.
  10. I don't know if you can say it's just a competition among Somali s. I feel like there is a competition between women in general. And when those women become mothers Watch Out! Because then its's whose kid walked first, talked first, was potty trained younger.... and it follows the poor kids till they are s what college they went to, what profession they are going to. The list is endless. I guess we notice it more with our women, so it seems this does not exist outside our community. The sad thing is it does. I can think of even an advertisement from back int he day as an example. Does anyone else remember the "don't me because I am beautiful ads"

Your photos have a cliche postcard qualtity and there is nothing wrong with playing with cliches as long as you know what you want out of it. For the most part the landscape ones have a way of inviting you and teasing you about this is what you can be doing instead of what you are doing right now. Although, I must say I am charmed by the portraits of people through windows. It is very objective.
  12. For some reason I forget the analysts name but I remember his theory. A year after the columbine massacre he wrote that the youth of a nation act out mostly when they are amidst a war and when the war is coming to an end. The worst acts of atrocities are commited.... because of the desensitization of from the war covereage. So pretty much what he was saying was the worst is yet to come.
  13. It's good to question what kind of entertainment you are taking into yourself though....
  14. The Italian subtitled Russian film It's that time between winter and spring, when the weather is indecisive and icky. And if your one of those people (like myself) who like matching weather, movies and moods. Then the Italian is for you. Se in Siberian Russia. The Itlian is about a boy at an orphanage who is being sold to an Italian couple in less than two weeks. When one of the children's mother comes back to the orphanage to reclaim her child. The boy(I forgot his name) decides to take this as a sign to set in search of his own mother. The landscapes and scenery match the mood throughout the movie of unescapable bleakness. And on his adventure he meets other kids along the way. The Itlain gives the viewer a peeping keyhole into the world of children without s; its rules and hierarchies. The only thing I was unsure of was the ending, however it gives me another reason to see it again. The Itlains was an 8.
  15. Here's how it's gonna work. we review movies we have recently seen theatre or rental. And give them a 1 - 10 for ratings. 10 being the highest rating and 1 being the lowest. And you have to explian why... you think it's a smash or a crash. I'll go first. I went to see Curse of the Golden Flower over the weekend. I normally love Chinese movies, however this one was an exception. Seriously, the movie had great potential... but it was a flop the way that a lot of movies are nowadays. The fight scenes would go from amazingly beautiful to unmistakenly lame within seconds. The pacing was ridicoulously slow!. There were many unnecessay camera shots of the prince walking down a long hall and entering the room. And as soon as this scenes was finished I thought they would use this device once and only once, boy was I wrong! And as for the final battle scene just becuase you can use thousands upon thousands of cheap extras in China does not mean you have to. WE GET IT CHINA HAS A LOT OF PEOPLE. All in all I say this movie was a 4.5... it was saved by it's brilliant costumes and wicked set, but it was still a crash.
  16. Disney! Ah Disney! I think within evey secter of our lives there is some kind of force that tries to condition us in some way or another. Dominating for children's entertainment is Disney. The sad thing is a lot of parents, not being aware of semitiocs and symbols in language as well as messgaes within it. Sit their children down in front of a Disney movie and that's where they get a break. The sobering truth is not only is Diseny blatantly racist, but a misogynist as well. a briliant example of this ism is very clear in the litle mermaid. Let look at this movie as a semitioc visual and the symbolism used. ------------------------------------------------- So the little mermaid is a young , she lives under the sea with her siblings and father. (The sea as a symbol is the murky f.a.n.ta.s.i.e.s of adolescent s in relation to this movie.) She sees the boy. She falls in love with the boy and she wants the boy, but can't have him. So she needs to get legs. (Now, here's the interesting part. She can't be with the boy because she has her legs permanently crossed as fins.... she's a virgin.... In order to get the boy she has to get two legs and what's between them. Her dad gets mad when he finds out becuase daddy wants his little to have crossed legs.) In order to get the legs from the witch she gives up her voice. (Because men don't care if you have a voice...opinion in other words... all they care is that you have a pair of legs and everything that goes with it.) ------------------------------------------------- That is one distubing example of a disney princess. Not to mention the fact that in one way or another all the princesses are disempowering to little s. The newest one being no different from the others...her character is a chambermaid for crying out loud! I mean what was the share holder meeting like? "who here know any black people? Oh come on, one of you must!" "Sir, I don't know any, but I heard of some a while ago." "Do you know what kind of jobs they do, Wilson?" "Yeah, the one I heard of where chambermaids" That's excellent, Wilson, chambermaid is our new ethnic characters position. Now they will never accuse us of being racist "
  17. you can't break eggs no matter how much pressure you put on them from top to bottom (vertically). I guess this performance is vey much like the endurance performances that came out of Fluxes in the 70s....like Chris Burden. <----- now that is one craaaazy m.o.f.o and I stress crazy. He set himself on fire attempted to inhale water as oxygen. Got his friend to shoot him and who could forget when he crucified himself to a volkswagen in a performance titled Trans-fixed. He is now retired as a performance artist. Oh and the nails he used they went on auction on e-bay..... I can't remeber how much they went for.
  18. Everytime I smell anybody wearingan ocean of perfume I feel like my head just got bashed in by this over-poweringly odoured sledge hammer. I can't satnd the smell of perfume on males or females... thank God I go to school and work in a scent free environment! Two weeks ago I was working on a film set with a friend and he wore this musky cologne so I spent the later part of the evening throwing up and someone else had to fill in for me.

  21. The Canadian system and everyone who believed in that system is responsible for the and of our late brother, period! QUOTE] Really? you think so? what about getting drunk on power and abusing it? what about corruption of many military officials? what about even the idea of sendng soliders to a country is more or less playing the role of the Imperial colonizer? and what about a misled public? [QB] [ Why can't you see him (MC Xamar) proclaiming to be a Canadian and yet avoiding what it comes with i.e. the atrocities they commit in the Muslim world? Its like saying I was a supporter but was not responsible the massacre of polish people! We are all aware of the state of Afghanistan, but, I think being a Canadian does not automatically make you a supporter of the occupation of Afghanistan. There are endless amounts of Candaians that are angered and ashamed that this country is acting as a colonizer. It seems to me what you are saying is (correct me if I'm wrong) this: Being a Canadian citizen makes you personally responsible "for the attrocities they commit in the muslim world" In other words (as an example) every single German that has ever lived or will ever live is personally responsible for the holocaust. wow! Talk about stratchig your nets far and wide.
  22. the little things are what make me happy. I like the sky 15 mins before it rains The smell of the sidewalk after a downpour the first awakening gust of wind on a morning jog Mercury Espresso's soy moccas with an organic choc chip cookie on my walk to school (they are the best) having breakfast for dinner and my monthly craft circle these things make me smile like a broken jawed *****

  25. I have had male and female bosses and I don't really care abouit gender. My preference for bosses is whether they single or in a realationship or married. I find older single women as bosses is like being at war, strangely enough the same phenomenon happens with older single men. With married people or people in realationships the dynamics aren't as fragile as land mines.
