Breaking news: Egypt Coup d'état, Morsy overthrown.

When the MBs win on a platform other than 'Islam is the solution' you can talk of the will of the people, they've violated electoral guidelines time and time again. MBs have successfully managed to upset almost every group in Egyptian society to the point of forcing everyone to come out in protest on Jun 30th. What have they achieved in their year in office? Their prime minister spent his time in office wondering whether unclean breasts cause diarrhea! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/06/egypt-hisham-kandil-unclean-breasts-diarrhea_n_2632719.html -
Should Somalia adopt an Islamic Judiciary System?

DoctorKenney;973656 wrote: It does permit slavery. But only under very specific and limited circumstances, and the "slaves" are nothing more than slaves in name, but not in practice. They are not to be abused, captured into slavery, and are to be freed when they request their freedom. Now end the discussion. You are either ignorant of Islam or just lying to save face. What you are referring to in Islam is called Mukataba which in no way obligates a slaver to free their slave upon request, it is up to them to decide whether they would want to. And even in the case they might be inclined to free the slaves, the slave has to pay their own bondage money, in essence purchasing themselves from the master, no better than putting the slave up in Souk el Nikhasa. In Islamic law, a mukataba is a contract of manumission between a master and a slave according to which the slave is required to pay a certain sum of money during a specific time period in exchange for freedom. In the legal literature, slaves who enter this contract are known as mukatab. Although the owner did not have to comply with the request, it was considered mustahabb (praiseworthy) to do so. According to Islamophiles, there is no contradiction between being a devout Muslim and being a slave master, would you accept that? -

DoctorKenney;973528 wrote: As I said before, these people in this Thread would have us believe that "Islamic Slavery" is similar to the barbaric slavery practiced in the United States for 400 years. It is NOTHING like that. Taking a fellow human being's right to a free life is a despicable practice at any time and in any place. Period. Spare me the nonsense of not being allowed to beat the slaves, the slaves you ship from their homes in North Africa, Persia, Spain, Khurasan and elsewhere to the Arabian deserts to be used for all manner of things the least of which is sex objects, and you dare talk about dignity? I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “Whoever slaps his slave or beats him, his expiation is to manumit him.” Narrated by Muslim (1657) . You mean the same Messenger of Allaah who discouraged his wife from manumitting her own slave? See the Hadith above that you conveniently ignored. We are forbidden to disrespect them, overburden them, make their lives uncomfortable, and if the slaves seek freedom, we must grant it to them. This is nothing at ALL like the slavery we're used to seeing on movies like Django and others. You are 'forbidden' to make their lives uncomfortable? You mean beyond using them as SLAVES?! And you're calling us trolls? Absolute garbage. If getting manumitted is as easy as you describe (which is a lie, we both know that) then why was it that the slaves did not benefit from this clause? Was it in the small print? Furthermore, Islam forbids Muslims from taking on new slaves, unless the Muslims were on the battlefield and were fighting the enemy....and as a result of the Battle the Muslims took prisoners of war, then it would be permitted to keep them as slaves. Virtually every country in the world keeps war-prisoners, including the Western nations and Islam affirms that as well. Capturing war criminals for the purpose putting them on trials or exchanging them for some of your own is one thing. Capturing 30,000 virgin maidens to be enslaved and used as harem is an altogether different matter: In his four-year campaign in Spain (711-15), Musa bin Nusair had captured 30,000 virgins from the families of Gothic nobility alone. This excludes the enslaved women from other backgrounds and of course, the children. Ibn Al Athir 4/295 Now explain to me what combat experience those 30,000 virgins have had, or how they contributed to the war efforts of the infidel states? Please note that they were fell victims in what was clearly arab conquests of Spain. They were captured in their own homes, so how are you going to justify this? Were they enemy combatants? Did they declare war on the Muslim Ummah? They were simply attacked by barbaric forces and they had to endure a lifetime of slavery through absolutely no fault of their own. In fact, Islam is a system which guaranteed the gradual abolishment of slavery within it's society. If it was obligatory in Islam to free your slaves, and if the expiation for many sins was to free a slave, then it would set about a chain of events which would lead to slavery's gradual abolishment. People would have us forget that Islam is a religion for ALL time, not just the 21st century. And it addresses issues which impact people for ALL time. So of course slavery was permitted under very narrow definitions, and these Islamophobic clowns are trying to conjure up images of the barbaric American-Style slavery which existed for 400 years, whereas Islam explicitly forbids this practice. Bullshit. Evidenced by the fact that the percentage of slaves in society surged during the Baghdad Caliphate to reach half of the total population in certain regions! You can never argue that Islam had an objective of eradicating slavery, it legitimized its practice to the point that no muslim, even in this 21st century dares to call slavery a relic from a shameful past. It is still a relevant part of islam, and still practiced in parts of the muslim world. -

You are deluded, the Choshu Five did not go back to Japan calling for the reestablishment of old, traditional, obsolete pre Sakoku era rules (read: Caliphate, Sharia etc). They came back enlightened and wanting to emulate the development they saw in the West and it was that mindset in addition to forces that are very much exclusive to Japan and a product of their history that put Japan on the map.

DoctorKenney;973460 wrote: These aren't real rebuttals. Your examples of mass-slavery occurring in some parts of Africa, are just examples of Arab Slave Traders looking to make a profit by imprisoning men, women and children and selling their price. Stating the extent to which the business of slavery had become a vital part of Islamic states isn't a rebuttal? This has very little to do with greedy slave traders and much more to do with a system that endorses the enslaving of humans and under which such practices flourishes to the point of having slaves constitute more than half of the population in certain regions. There is the famous hadith whereby Maimuna bint al Harith, the prophet's wife freed her slave, the prophet here clearly states that she would have gotten extra rewards had she given her slave to her uncle, effectively encouraging her to keep the slave in bondage: Maimuna bint Al-Harith told him that she manumitted a slave-girl without taking the permission of the Prophet. On the day when it was her turn to be with the Prophet, she said, "Do you know, O Allah's Apostle, that I have manumitted my slave-girl?" He said, "Have you really?" She replied in the affirmative. He said, "You would have got more reward if you had given her (i.e. the slave-girl) to one of your maternal uncles." -

DoctorKenney;973400 wrote: Slavery in Islam only exists in the context of Jihaad and acquiring prisoners of war. So if the Muslim State wages war, then the POW's (prisoners of war) are then acquired as slaves. So Islam reformed society in the sense that there were multiple avenues to acquire slaves in ancient society.... But Islam reduced the avenues to acquire slaves to just one; having Prisoners of War after the battle is finished. Either way, this is a complex issue, but Islam certainly doesn't advocate going to random villages, capturing men, women and children, and then selling their price, which is what the American slave trade was infamous for. This Hadith by the Prophet says this: Sahih Bukhari Book 2 Number 29 "Your slaves are your brothers and Allah has put them under your command. So whoever has a brother under his command should feed him of what he eats and dress him of what he wears. Do not ask them (slaves) to do things beyond their capacity (power) and if you do so, then help them." The Quran repeatedly tells the Believers to free their slaves, and it is also commanded to free your slaves if they request it, and write a contract guaranteeing their freedom (Surah 24:33) Either way, this is a detailed issue and is already addressed by numerous English-speaking Islamic scholars (Bilal Phillips) and others. Don't turn this forum into some Islamic Debate forum. Because every single post you made here is related to Islam and criticizing it thereof. Nothing else Historically the practice of chattel slavery flourished under Islamic states that adopted raids and ghazwat as means of survival and economic stimulation. Read with me: Some lesser Islamic slave societies are also of interest. One is the Baghdad caliphate founded in the 7th and lasting through the 10th century. Many tens of thousands of military captives were imported from Sogdiana, Khazaria, and other Central Asian locales. In the 9th and 10th centuries several tens of thousands of black Zanj slaves were imported from Zanzibar to Lower Iraq, where they constituted more than half the total population and were put to work to clear saline lands for irrigation and to cultivate sugar. Also: It is probable that the Ottoman Empire, and especially its centre in Turkey, should be termed a slave society. Slaves from both the white Slavic north and the black African south flowed into Turkish cities for half a millennium after the Turks seized control of much of the Balkans in the 14th century. The proportion of the population that was slave ranged from about one-fifth in Istanbul, the capital, to much less in remoter provincial areas. -

DoctorKenney;973270 wrote: I would really like these Islamophobes to start claiming that the Chinese are underachievers and dumb because the Jews, a group of only 13 million people, outnumber them in Nobel Prizes. But they won't admit that. Because they know their argument is shallow from the get-go. I'd also like to know how many of the "Jewish" Nobel Laureates are really Atheists. Most of the "Jewish" scientists, are in-fact outright Atheists, such as Albert Einstein and others. Would it be fair to describe them as "Jewish", then compare them to Muslims, even though these scientists don't even believe in God? So is this a religion comparison (Muslims and Jews), or is this an ethnic comparison? And if this was an ethnic comparison, then it's useless to discuss because Muslims aren't exactly an ethnicity. This entire thing is a misleading argument all-around. I assumed Tallabo would be smarter than that, but I was wrong Its funny you say this because Albert Einstein considered himself to be a Jew yet you come along and for the sake of conveniency remove him into the atheist column, a term he had never used. On the other hand you amalgamate the likes of Abdus Salam regardless of the fact that he is a follower of Ahmadiyya, a sect seen by majority of muslims as a non muslim, again for the advancement of your argument. The topic of discussion here is the contribution of Muslims to modern science (or lack of) as signified by the number of Nobel Prize winners, in relation of that of Jews, Christians, Atheists etc or Belarus (ha!). You could even take it along (the very interesting) route suggested by BlackFlash: It's a bit shallow to claim this is a problem with Muslims in particular. You'll notice that neighbouring populations to many of the Muslim majority countries aren't exactly doing too well either. I think a better discussion could be had by debating why certain cultures produce more intellectuals to begin with, particularly in the case of Ashkenazi Jews and Persians. Even in the hayday of the Abbasid empire, almost all of the greatests mathematical/scientific achievements were concentrated among Perisian Muslims rather than Arabs and if consider the number of published and cited research papers, that divide still exists in the present day. -

DoctorKenney;973242 wrote: A completely misleading comparison. First of all. there are about 4 or 5 Muslim Nobel Laureates. Second of all, your brackets suggesting Muslims control (60 states) yet China is only a "single country" is idiotic, dishonest, and you know it. There are 1.4 BILLION CHINESE. 1.4 BILLION. That's almost the same number of Muslims in this world. Why only a handful of Chinese Nobel Laureates? Are the Chinese dumb too? India has only SIX, and they have 1.1 billion people. Are the Indians dumb as well? Are you ready to state that the Jews are much smarter and better than the Chinese because they won more Nobel Prizes than the Chinese? What about the Africans? How many Black Africans won the Nobel Prize, and compare it to how many Jews won that prize. We both know very well that the Jews are disproportionately represented in the list of winners for this Prize, but to compare this to Muslim Nobel PrizeWinners and then suggest Muslims are the only group of people who aren't making a contribution is completely dishonest. You can do better than that. I only listed the example of China and India that you have brought up. We are not discussing scientific contribution by magnitude of population here, because Jews number much less than Muslim, the Chinese and Indians. However, their contribution to the advancement of our world is quite impressive. Now both the Chinese and Indians are represented in most indicators of human development, but Muslims are sadly absent. Regarding your claim that Jews are disproportionately represented in winners of the Nobel Prize, please bring forth the scientists you think undeservedly won the prize, a list of them would be nice First of all. there are about 4 or 5 Muslim Nobel Laureates. The discussion here pretains to scientific achievements so I have listed those who won a science prize. But anyways, well done, you have the same number of Nobel Laureates as Belarus -

The vast majority of the world is severely lacking when it comes to Nobel Prizes, as only a few Chinese people won the Prize as well, despite the fact that there are MANY more Chinese people than there are Jews. An antediluvian system of laws that should never ever see the light of day in the 21 century. It doesnt make sense to copy paste an arab legal system that has never worked in Somalia and that Somalis hardly trust. -
Gesamtkunstwerk is a strong German word that I come to love in architecture, it means holistic design or 'complete work of art. It is for that reason that I think so highly of the likes of Mackintosh, Wright and Gaudi. Their approach is such that they design all aspects of the building from the exterior facade to all the interiors, light fixtures, furniture and flooring, heck, some would even include cutlery and fire irons as well. What this does is it creates an immersive experience and creates works that are very cohesive, hence mood, atmosphere etc. I am a little sick for modern architects, some of the industry's biggest names ala Zaha Hadid and Steven Holl are just repetitive in their work with no real substance to their often lopsided glass boxes.

A very silly proposition indeed. I understand the importance of this issue had there been 10 or more Yemeni islands scattered in what would otherwise be our territorial waters, which would be a threat to national security à la the Aegean dispute, but a single island would and should not be a problem as the belt of coastal waters (territorial waters and thus airspace) extends at most about 12 nautical miles which would come to about 22 km whereas Socotra is over 80km in distance. Now Turkey on the other hand have a pretty rough deal :

But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. And as such it has been canceled out (read:nullified) by the sword verse. This is under Naskh, which in many ways serves to mediate the conflict between Meccan verses which are for the most part seen to be pacifist and the later violent Medinan verses. Do you not know that Allah has power over all things? A good example of Naskh is the compulsion verse in Quran: Let there be no compulsion in religion, which on the face of it is very fair and positive, unfortunately it does not hold true anymore as it has been abrogated by the fighting verse: Allah says: "There is no compulsion in religion", meaning: do not force anyone to embrace Islam, because it is clear and its proofs and evidences are manifest. Whoever Allah guides and opens his heart to Islam has indeed embraced it with clear evidence. Whoever Allah misguides blinds his heart and has set a seal on his hearing and a covering on his eyes cannot embrace Islam by force...hence Allah revealed this verse. But, this verse is abrogated by the verse of "fighting...Therefore, all people of the world should be called to Islam. If anyone of them refuses to do so, or refuses to pay the Jizya they should be fought till they are killed. This is the meaning of compulsion.
