  1. Sorry to hear that SP... you can discuss anything you'd like here though, including existential crises
  2. Alpha ruins everyone else's threads and surely does not think twice about doing so, so let's not worry about derailing his topic. We're not on the same page, what we have is the same information but I disagree with your interpretation of their usage of the word Somali because it doesn't hold up in the context of other Ethiopian documents. The kings knew the difference between the general "Muslim" and the ethnic "Somali," so the usage here is precise.

The first recorded use of the word Somali was in songs from the negus Yeshaq's reign in the 15th century, celebrating the defeat of the Ifat sultanate (whose capital was Zeila). Of course as a victory song it is demeaning to the defeated, but Somali here is a literal description of the Muslims to the east.

In fact I tried to hop on this project but was led to several dead ends. though this government must decide what image it wishes to form. there are also tricky dynamics to this like the ahmed gurey statue for instance. there is a lot of academic literature which suggeat gurey was not Somali and in fact his somali lineage specifically darooooooooooooood lineage has been pushed by the barre regime. The clan stuff is dumb, but I do believe he was Somali. Ethiopian historiography (including the royal chronicles) describe him as a Somali with an army of Somali nomads, and I think Somali oral history confirms this. But I do know there are a few scholars who argue he was not (possibly Harla from Harar), but their only evidence is the ambiguity of the one account Futah Al-Habash, written by an Arab who was there at the time and noted that the army was Somali... so their logic is that if Gurey was was Somali, he would have mentioned that too.
  5. SP didn't say just canonical, mainstream poetry, but Somali poetry as a whole, which is not limited to men or to specific regions and clans. They may not be as well known, but they are there
  6. Is "news" not a sufficient reason to start a thread?
  7. Fair enough, it just sounds to me like you're taking issue with the visibility of these Somalis altogether. My point is that Nin-Yaaban is doing nothing but reporting to us what is already out there in the news, so it is not fair to say that he is "giving a negative image" of Somalis by creating this thread.

He by disseminating and parading information about their criminal activities, storylines and lifestyles, and by directly associating the Somali name with those criminal activities, storylines and lifestyles . Its like starting a thread entitled "bad and negative stories about Somalis"... yacni, if that is not a disservice then I dont know what is. They're responsible for that too. All Nin-Yaaban is doing is posting information that is already public, appearing on news websites and such, and sharing them with us so these cases are easily accessible. What's wrong with discussing these issues openly? The culture of silence and denial we have as a community is the reason why many of these problems persist.

  10. That's fine, just wanted to point out that you're the one making every thread about me, which says something about *you* and your mental state.

  19. I liked our monuments for Hawa Taako, Ahmed Gurey, Sayyid Mohamed and Daljirka Dahson (the unknown soldier monument), and I hope they are rebuilt along with additional historical figures.
