Wanaag Farista iyo Xuman Reebida will be roaming the streets of Hargeisa and will probably catch you in the act, as you in indulging in your 'western-isms''. shameful. stay away you little goat. I had a week to shake off my Western/reer magaalo needs in Harar and Dire Dawa dee. Hargeisa is a good mix, not nearly as traditional and conservative as some of the places I went in kilil shanaad, but of course I behave accordingly Plus it's Ramadan, I will probably just spend a few days with my family and NOT hanging out with you, ee sida ula soco.
  2. I booked a flight to Jijiga tomorrow morning because of my terrifying experience on the bus between Harar and Dire Dawa, with a driver who sped and tried to pass trucks on the road winding down the mountains around Harar. I didn't even take photos of the beautiful landscape because I was certain that it would distract the driver and send us tumbling over the edge. Never again  Going rural again, so I'll probably be offline for another few weeks until I'm back in Jijiga, or in Hargeisa. Ramadan Kareem y'all
  3. Tallaabo;967399 wrote: You should have consulted me before you bought your ticket Saffy  I would surely have told you to buy your ticket directly from the airline via their website. I know it because I learned my lesson the hard way (losing $750 after missing a flight). Damn It's a pain in the @ss for sure, and their staff were really clueless and unhelpful when I went to the Dire Dawa office this morning, they probably shuffled me around to six or seven different people before they told me there's nothing they can do. I don't think I've ever heard of an airline that won't let you change your ticket for a fee, but EA won't let me upgrade my domestic ticket to an international one.
  4. Arghhh Ethiopian Airlines won't let me switch my Jijiga-Addis flight to Berbera-Addis, and they won't refund the ticket so I can buy another one since I bought it from a travel agency originally. So now the question is whether or not to go to Hargeisa for a few days and come back, and when. It's a hassle, it's Ramadan, and it's a rough trip, but I'd like to go see ayeyo

Not at all, internet is just really crappy here and for some reason I'm not always able to access SOL. I think I'm going to leave Dire Dawa on Tuesday, I'm getting bored here and the men are awful
  6. ^^ the channel that Hargeisa receives is ESTV, Ethiopian Somali TV, but I was referring to the national channel ETV that features everything including Somali music. But you're right, ESTV is an interesting and often strange channel to watch, you can see how the state is trying to integrate Somalis into the national fold and the Ethiopian nationalism can be a little unsettling at times. I like dhaanto a lot though, I even made this my ringtone (Somaliland Allow Dhowr was last summer's tune for my SL SIM )
  7. Alpha Blondy;967059 wrote: gartay. i'll be officially going into seclusion for the month of Ramadan inshallah, ma garatay? i'm afraid, i wont be able to meet you Huuno ee sida uula soco. That's too bad So I've been watching a lot of Ethiopian TV (ETV) these last few days... they feature traditional music from all of Ethiopia's ethnic groups, and I have to say the Somali videos are BY FAR the best, although I must admit I'm also quite fond of eskesta. Dhaanto y'all.
  8. Odey;966942 wrote: Tune in for statistics on the "fat child" syndrome in H town. Not everything is development! At least western countries can afford healthcare as a result of explosion in obesity linked diseases such as diabetes, hypertension etc. but H town and Somalis in general cannot afford such healthcare. What should be encouraged is eating healthy and fighting "Fat". If I were a resident of H town, I would protest this development! Traditional Somali food is also full of sugar and fat, perhaps even moreso than most Western cuisines. The difference is that people back home stick to three regular (and unprocessed) meals a day, most people do not have a fridge with food sitting around to 'graze' from and snack on constantly, and Somalis are generally more physically active than Westerners in their everyday routines.
  9. Yo, would any of you happen to know what there is to do in Dire Dawa in terms of nightlife? I'm getting bored dee.

  13. Dire Dawa internet sucks too I'm afraid Alphow I may be heading to Hargeisa, the family over there won't let me leave without seeing them.... debating whether or not to switch my flight home to Berbera-Addis-Toronto instead of the current Jijiga-Addis leg I have so I can spend the last few days of Ramadan in SL.

Lawd hammercy, I'm ALIVE and currently taking a break from tuulo life, I'm in Harar today and heading to Dire sometime tomorrow. Wi-fi at this hotel isn't the best but at least I'm online again, there are flash internet sticks that people all over the kilil use but of course none of them are compatible with my Mac. I'll try and find one that works while I'm in Dire Dawa What the hell did I miss?
  15. Alpha :D Every spot in Hargeisa has its pretensions, Summer Time is the one that bothers me the least. And yes, I'm very independent which is why I'm here dee, but I was expecting a warmer reception from our Alpha Blondy, should I decide to grace him with my presence in Hargeisa. But I will let you know if I'm in town Heading to my bus now... y'all will hear from me sometime next week

Agah, you can't even be a gentleman and pay for the car? And I wouldn't go to your house, I'd meet you for coffee at my favourite spot Summer Time, ee sida ula soco
  17. Alpha Blondy;962095 wrote: NO! its $7. can you afford that? I don't need a ride from a peasant like you anyway  A kilil shanaad government vehicle will drive me to the border, and a SL government vehicle will pick me up and take me to Hargeisa, ee sida ula soco.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL After spending most of my Somaliland trip throwing up because I went without any meds or vaccines, I made sure I got EVERY shot and took every pill in existence before I left Toronto, so I haven't been sick once so far I haven't done any serious work yet, just networking and getting all the things/clearances I need in order while I'm in Jijiga, but I will start interviews next week inshaAllah. How's Hargeisa inabti? If I get bored and tuulo life gets to me, I may just head over for a few days
  20. I'm heading to Degeh Bur in the morning... I wasn't able to get an internet stick today since the place that sells them closed early, so I'm going to be offline for about a week I guess that's okay, I'm supposed to be working anyway lol
